PLEEEEEEEEEEASE? :D
I support this thread!
I get this strange feeling that you have rigged these cards in your favour....and why are you only weak from below?
But to be blunt this game needs some sort of collectathon aspect like Tripple Triad or a beastiary...or a codex...or something.
only part of a game/mini game/card game that probably would be entertaining to me is the gathering of them in the world. if you can't lose your cards and be forced to get more i doubt i can enjoy it for long. it will be like any other mini game in ffxi where getting the actual passes, transportation passes and the quests prior to the mini game being the fun part and the second everyone has theirs and are in say like the Colosseum ...it dies out. but i do like the idea of a card game, it sounds way better then any side game they have had in ffxi. and also don't put it outside the game or no thanks, even if you charge monthly for it(even though then i wouldn't play it) i would suggest keep it inside the game or it becomes pointless.
That was the thing about Triple Triad. You could lose your cards. Especially with different rules. You'd be forced to earn powerful cards once again if you lost them.
Also, let's push this a step further like FFVIII did and give crafters the ability to Refine cards into materials. Say you have a Bomb Card, a crafter could Refine it into a stack of bomb ash.
I honestly think they might have plans for that with all the journal stuff they have been talking about. At least they have plans to create a journal for Gathers to make notes of their findings so I don't think it would be to farfetched to say they may come up witha beastiary which would be pretty cool lol.
There has to be a decent balance in it, if one is to be able to refine materials out of it. The question becomes how do you obtain these cards in the first place. If the cards are easy enough to obtain then to refine them into materials would destroy the concept of gathering since people would just play cards to obtain their materials rather then gather them.
I guess one concept could be you buy a set of cards for x gil, and you pretty much choose from a set of packs each with their own rarity and cards. Perhaps a method to limit the amount of materials could be this.
When you recieve a card in a pack you can't refine it right away, you have to play games with the card and "spiritbond" it in a sense lol. Of course the amount of times you have to use it will be based on whether you win/lose/draw and such. So if you keep winning with said cards your bond will grow quicker but if you lose you won't gain as much as a bond.
Also the rarity would determine how long it might take to be able to refine it
Common=1-20 mobs
Uncommon=21-40 mobs
Rare=41-50 mob
Secret Rare=50+ *all include NMs in those level range
Primal=include NPCs and Primal cards
So with the above in mind it could be something like
C=3 wins/7 lost
U=5 wins/12 lost
R=10 wins/25 lost
S=20 wins/50 lost
P=40 wins/100 lost
Basically if you win with the same card 3 times and it's common you'll be given the opportunity to refine it. When it comes down to the Primal cards, their refines would be unique. In terms of the Primals themselves they would novelty gear like perhaps a head piece like Ifrit's horns. In the same sense NPCs will also offer the same sense of unique gear like say you have Kan-E-Senna card, you would have a chance to obtain a piece of her gear set.
At least I think this would be the best way to deal with it, make it where the rarer cards can give out neat looking gear while the other sets woud offer a decent amount of materials though you'd have to use said cards first in order to obtain them. With that in mind you would also have a limit as to how many cards you would be able to hold at once so while it's normally a 5-5 card game at the start you would only have a case that can hold 25 cards. The as your rank increases you would be given the option to pay gil to increase the amount of cards you can hold as well as access to new booster packs. But ya, as long as they make the cards a decent price I can see it working as long as they don't make it the best method to obtain materials but another access point to obtain materials I can see it working.
If you consider crafters like leatherworker and Clothcraft, I can see them enjoying this game to obtain the leather/cloth materials they need since they do lack a gatherer to get it for them at a decent rate atm lol. But ya, this is just off the top of my head, it sounds fun enough in my head brings along some friendly competition but ya, if anything like a card game was implemented into the game we prolly wouldn't even see it til 2.0 lol.
Well, there was a Card ability in FFVIII to convert weakened monsters into cards. While I'm not sure if I'd like something like that in this game, you could have a stack of blank cards, and you can use the Card ability on a monsters corpse to try and imprint it onto the card.
I could see people playing cards with their mules so they dont lose the cards to be able to refine them
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. It's the most popular mini game in all of Final Fantasy. They already have the rules and everything set. They even have the source code from FF8 to take inspiration from. All they gotta do is tweak it to fit the FF14 world. Set up the initial game. Then iterate and improve based on player feedback.
A non-combat PVP system is just what this game needs to alleviate boredom.
Too bad we will never get this before V 2.0 :(
Never really saw why the card game was so popular. Chocobo Hot and Cold, on the other hand. . .
I know they had to do something with Mogbonanza. I would be lying if I told you I knew specifics, but I do know there are some stupid roadblocks setup by some systems to deter online gambling. This very well may not apply to a particular state in the US, and might just be in another region. I just know laws vary state by state, and country by country.
You're right, but only when it comes to ACTUAL money. Using Gil, a virtual currency in a virtual world, doesn't fall into that.
As far as rare and powerful cards, you can make a four-fold system. When you defeat a powerful NM, like Ifrit for example, you can get his card. With his card, you can:
-Use it in a game of Triple Triad
-Trade it for a unique Ifrit item (Weapon)
-Refine it into a powerful crafting item. A Tier V materia of your choosing.
They couldn't make a video of the development team drawing up the numbers in the Mogbonanza because the video itself would make it a gambling thing and you have to be 21+ to gamble (or is is 18+...idk I forget lol its one of the two).
This needs to happen.
Like now.
I get your understanding, and seriously it's not me who decides this lol. Yoshi has even stated something along the lines of not being able to make a something 'exactly' like the Golden Saucer from VII because of the aforementioned. I also know they had issues with Mogbonanza at first. The 'wheres' and 'whys' I do not know. I am unsure about the specifics, but I know they step lightly around gambling/betting features that are implemented into the game, stating laws varying state, and country.
Is there any way these cards could also be used in battles? Maybe it summons the creature embodied on the card or using one casts a spell or causes some ability to trigger?
Love Triple Triad and Chocobo Hot and Cold. Honestly Hot and Cold would be easier to implement prior to 2.0 than TT would. Instance a garden area and let the NPC "rent" us a Chocobo, build up from there. For TT, I think playing NPCs is the way to go unless you have an arena setting. Not sure how two people standing in the street playing would work. Maybe have a hall where you sit, it says "Waiting for opponent..." and when the other person sits in front of you it starts the battle. I'm trying to think how the mechanics would work.
Triple Triad, yes please!
Yoshida has already stated multiple times that he wants to get a type of card game in.
the hitch being figuring out the mechanics of said game and adding a reward system to get player well actually playing the thing.
Say what you want, if they were to put in a card game with out some kind of over arching reason to play. the majority of players would dick around with it for a little then label it a waste of time and move on. You need look no further then xi to see glaring examples.
Hint: the things I am talking about start with pank, bali, bren, mobl, and choc.
If Triple Triad were implemented exactly like it was in in FFVIII, would that be enough to get people to play it, collect rare cards, etc.? If Triple Triad was turned into a class, with its own set of skills and traits, would people have fun grinding it from 40 to 50 with the way things are set up now? What would a level 50 Card Master be able to do that a level 1 couldn't?
Not to steal ideas from other MMOs but Vanguard did a couple of interesting things with their diplomacy card game. One of which I did enjoy was a bonuses granted to everyone in a particular area. So, if enough people played Triple Triad against the guards of Ul'dah and earned enough wins, a bonus would be granted to all players in the Thanalan area for the next few hours. Something akin to the Light Party bonus.
Or, FFXI's Conquest could be brought back in a way. Each week all the Triple Triad wins are tallied up: how many Triple Triad players from Gridania, Ul'dah and Limsa won their matches and the residences of that winning city receive some bonus. Reduced teleport costs throughout Thanalan, faster anima regeneration, increased drop rates in that region, etc.
Would that be enough incentive?
I don't think that it should be it's own class. You should get rank points for PVP, and general points earned for victories against the NPCs. There is no need for a grind to be associated with this game. Your over all PVP and NPC rankings are just for show and prestige.
That would be a good way to increase the depth of the game and its relevance to the game world, yes.
100% Me approved!
Final Fantasy Card Games are Awesome.
Keep the rules simple.
Allow for the incorporation of additional rules.(FFVIII Style)
Make Rare and Super Rare Cards.
Give cards a Secondary Purpose.. Card Mod, Yes Please.
How I envision it:
Location
I don't think there needs to be a specific area for casual games. In the menu, just add a challenge option and go about it like you would trade. You get challenge, you accept, the Triple Triad Menu pops up for selecting cards and the board in the middle. The only limiting factor to this is that you should only be able to play in cities, camps and hamlets.
Whom you may challenge
Any player who has Triple Triad Status active. When you or your opponent accept the challenge, you both go into the "synth" kneeling position. Your deck could have an average level based on the tiers and strength of the cards you have, so Jimmy Thenoob doesn't get splattered by a Primal hand.
Rules of the Game
Rules and How-to-Play
Acquiring Cards
-Random chance to drop off monsters.
-'Card' ability to convert a weakened monster into a card. EXP and drops are forfeited. Cannot be used on Notorious Monsters.
-Crafted. (Ifrit's Horn + Blank Card = Ifrit's Card)
-Quest and Leve rewards.
Card Uses
-Used in games of Triple Triad
-Collection and Trade
-Refined for items (Bomb Card = Stack of Bomb Ash)
-Converted to Materia (Win X number of games while using a card, where X is the level of the card x5)
Crafters and Materia
Refining a card, like in FFVIII, would allow crafters to also make use of the system. Refining a card can have various yields and all dependent on the card's level.
For example, Refining a card for a Marmot (Level 1) may yield a few marmot pelts. Refining an Ifrit card (Level 8) would yield an "Infernal Catalyst x3" for use with an Infernal Materia.
Infernal Materia you ask?
Card Materia
Only level 8 and higher cards may be converted to Materia. When deciding how you want to apply a powerful card to an item, you have two choices. Refine it for the Catalyst or Spiritbind it for the Materia. Ultimately, you will have to acquire a second copy of the card if you wish to get both or buy the catalyst.
The materia would be unique. "Infernal Materia" would require the "Infernal Catalyst" to be set. The materia could be extremely potent.
Infernal Materia: STR+50, DEX+50, Fire Resistance +50, Adds Fire Elemental Damage. Placed in a GLD/MRD/LNC/ARC/PGL arm.
Tidal Materia: MND+50, INT+50, Water Resistance +50, Adds Water Elemental Damage. Placed in a CNJ/THM arm.
Earthen Materia: DEF+50, VIT+50, Earth Resistance +50, Adds Earth Elemental Damage. Placed in a Shield or Body armor.
Copies of Cards
I would recommend cards leveled 1-7 be allowed to have 3 copies. Card levels 8-10 would be exclusive one copies.
But wait, there's more!
Why limit the Catalyst to just materia? Let's put some power in the crafters hands and help the DoW with that pesky Ifrit weapon. Bring an Infernal Catalyst and an Ifrit's Horn to a crafter and watch them work their magic! One recipe with these two items would allow the crafter to make the appropriate Ifrit weapon.
I love this card game with a passion. If SE put it into XIV, I'd die happy. Hell, I'd buy it if it was a stand alone game. But I'd do the same for Blitzball too. xD
I would also really like to see this implemented into the game. Even if it's not Triple Triad, some kind of card game that's similar. Can take any ideas from it, such as the Card-Refine - seems like a good one. As long as it's interesting and ongoing I'll definitely enjoy it.
I MISS THIS CARD GAME SOOOO MUCH:)
I bought FF8 on PSNetwork mainly to play this cardgame:)
FFXI kind of did that with pankration. Except you took a picture of it and then fought with it a la Monster Rancher in Aht Urghan.
But I really would love a card game. Tetramaster in FFIX was carried into playonline. I was sad when they discontinued it because of a lack of playerbase (in tetramaster not xi).
YOSHI-P. DO THE RIGHT THING.
in case you were wondering. the right thing is add tetra master.
DO THE RIGHT THING.
Biggest thing though, is to make sure its actually IN the game, not a side client. That was XI/Tetramaster's problem, it was a separate thing and well, most people just wanted to play XI, so incorporate it into XIV to work well and...well it will work! lol
As a former hardcore mtg and yugioh player I highly approve this message.
I know Yoshi said he is waiting for the right idea to come across the desk, but I hope he keeps hearing these ideas. I would love for this game to come into the world of XIV. :)
I wanted a in-game card collecting mini-quest too but SE feels that polishing up on lesser features like buttons and menus as such and system mechanics that doesn't matter much to make a horse sneeze. The way a game looks (bells & whistles)and how many smooth widgets are on the screen won't make players like it more or attract new players. Whether there's cool stuff to do in-game or during down-time that will give diverse adventurers hope for fun, interaction and adventure.
A card quest with card collecting and card-games and challenges would be neat! Instead of playing against NPCs like that of FFIX, you challenge other players (beat them and take their cards) ;D
Submit suggestions in the suggestion forums, this is general discussion.
Oh god a fully functional triple triad in game... all of my money.
Imagine if they also had conversion abilities so you had a chance to turn beaten NMs into cards, which could then be tradeable and such? Could change the economy of FF14 as we know it, haha. But I'm getting ahead of myself.. starting with the card game itself would be fantastic, then we can weave it into the game later with NPCs who play, triple triad sidequests, rare cards, tournaments on the weekends, etc. :P
The random rule is now in effect.
