Besides the obvious height and skin color deal, I was wondering if there were more subtle things like animations, expressions, or anything else different between female Roe and Higlanders? Debating buying the thing and biting the bullet.

Your emotes and expressions will be different. I don't believe there are any major animation differences between the races/genders as far as say, an archer being female Roegadyn or female Highlander.
If you aren't sure, I'd recommend testing in the character creator/benchmark or making an alt if your subscription allows.
Emotes are different between races and genders, and in the Hyur's case clans too I think. Expression emotes I THINK are the same all around (aside from maybe minute differences when zoomed in to the face)
The exception to the emotes are the Persistent Dances(Step/Harvest/Ball/Manderville/Bomb/Thav/Gold/Sundrop Dances) and Visor. I THINK the change poses and sits are different from race to race and between genders.
All the emotes are different. Highlanders are a very expressive bunch. They put there whole body into everything they do. And they've got the second best /dance after Male Roes. Expressions are more based on what face you pick and I think the animations are the same across the races.
Thanks for the replies, now I just have to see if the cash is worth it.
The only different parts are the:
- Basic Race emotes
- Racial outfit
- Running, sprinting and walking animations.
The only races that real different animation for some classes are male/female Lalafell and Roegadyn.
One that everyone overlooks: Stats. It's extremely minor, and not really worth mentioning aside from an interesting tidbit, but your race and clan affect your starting statistics. At level 60, this amounts to only a few points more or fewer of a particular stat, nothing to really impact your play style or class.
I just like to mention it because everyone else casually forgets about it.
I would try it out first. I was pretty dead set on the highlander for a while. I created an alt to try a bit and was glad I did. I much preferred the Roe's animations and emotes. Nothing specific but just a much stronger like for the Roe after moving past the character creator screen. I still love my highlander design but in practice she's better as my retainer. Hey I still get to dress her up too! (At least to some degree)
What's benchmark for the uninitiated?
Kinda wish the races had racial traits but whatever slightly altered stats is the only real difference between them all.
Another difference could be riding animation. I know for the Ahriman mount, my Lalafell looks like he is holding onto him for dear life, while my Miqo'te is much more casual in comparison. For the Unicorn mount, I believe female Elezen rides differently from Miqo'te as well. Its a little touch, but at least it is some difference between the races.
I'd recommend you to make alts and check it out, Gryneth. Even if you have a subscription allowing one character, it's one character per server, so if it's just for testing you can make a character on a different server and check it out. People can give you some feedback but sometimes small things can make the difference on how much you like a particular race.
Plus now that you can skip the whole first cutscene, making an alt won't take you 2 minutes.
If you spam the /disappointed emote on female highlanders, you flap your arms while making an :O face.
If female Midlanders had Miqote run animations I would be in heaven. The light jog they have looks so much more natural. The "princess" run drives me mad xD
For my part, I rather preferred the FFXI system. Tarutaru had low HP but insane MP, making them superior mages (which was canon in-game), Galka had low MP but insane HP, making them superb at tanking. Granted, it wasn't the most balanced system. Having a Galka as your white mage often made you groan before the fight started, as they really had to manage their MP and had the weakest cures, but it did make for a diverse roster.
I for one am glad they didnt keep this system. As someone that plays multiple classes, i would hate to have one job be severely gimped..
It would be nice if the races did have SOME distinct feature to differentiate them, and the stat differences would make sense (obviously getting punched by a Roe monk would hurt a lot more than getting punched by a Lala monk) but it would cripple the flow of this particular game..
Imagine if you went in with a race and class combo that wasn't the -most- efficient.. you would get booted out of nearly every run, as this community demands the most efficient teams, for the fastest runs possible.
Jump animations are different between the races as well. Miqo'tes jump like cats, Highlander females jump like Lara Croft.
Male Au Ra jump like

I am very glad this system went away. Role flexibility was mentioned, but aesthetics is very important to me as well. I decided I wanted to be a caster, but no way in hell was I going lala. It's nice to not have my race negatively impact my character.
If you use gatherers, there is one tiny consideration (likely non-issue). Node bonuses are sometimes off stats, so certain races are unable to hit bonuses at same-level nodes without melding stats. I meld int to my btn and str to my mom - otherwise, I can't hit some +1 attempt nodes.
That's possibly why they made the differences at high levels negligible as mentioned before that FFXI had massive stat gaps at top levels, Tarutaru were bundles of INT and MP making excellent BLM, while Galka were all VIT and HP making them ideal tanks, it ultimately doesn't stop Taru for tanking and Galka for healing (I was GalkaWHM for years) At lower levels it was a different story, as a Galka WHM I had whopping 16 MP at lvl 1 what could cast 2 cures before having to stop and rest to regain my MP! A Taru would have nearly double that at Lvl 1 though at later levels it would be remedied by gear to an extent in cases of HP and MP the racial divide on stats would still be large giving a Galka healer survivability from attacks that would smush a Taru into paste while Taru BLM could keep on casting with high damage while other mages would have lower damage and need to stop and rest for MP more often.
I'm glad they didn't keep FFXI's stat system in one way as it makes it more balanced experience for all with no more Squishy Tanks and Mini MP Pool Healers but on the other hand when you have the skilled players that could overcome those challenges helped make the experience more memorable and entertaining.
