"We don't know when new content is coming, please look forward to it.
Also no add-ons because of Playstation."
this was from the q and a
"We had been working on add-ons originally with the goal of implementing it half a year after the launch of A Realm Reborn; however, we were looking at features that would not create any inequalities between PC and PlayStation users and one of the reasons why we are behind on this is due to the lack of room to do certain things on the PlayStation, which was more than we had envisioned. Because of this, we have been prioritizing the implementation of other expanded features."
Heh eerily similar to my response on reddit earlier.

TLDR, almost everything: We are looking into it, and this may or may not come at some point in the future.
I think its Playstation 3 but they didn't want to say that. That thing is ancient it's already on the brink.
It's both PS3 and PS4, consoles don't get along with addons very well.
You may be right and I wouldnt be surprised. imo they should add support for the PC at least, and if ppl want to continue with Playstation, well they will have to make the descision not to use addons. Coarse I know nothing about this so I do not even know if that is even possible.
Thats the thing, this was not going to be unlicensed, SE was going to create a framework which the addons must meet, normally this means does not alter the client or software on said machine, this doesn't happen on PC on other mmos so its a proven system that works, SE was going to be the official publisher.
On paper that sounds simple, but when we see what that actually takes:
They have to designate devs to review every single bit of code before accepting their addon, this takes time, money and effort that might be needed in other areas of the game.
They have to designate a QA team to test the addon in as many scenarios as they can, to make sure it doesn't break the game in PS4 , again, this takes time, money and effort that might be needed in other areas of the game.
They would have to do this every single time the addon is updated, and trust me, addons are updated very often.
And lastly, they would have to do this for every single addon people submit, increasing the workload even more.
This is only a problem on PS and not PC because in PC they don't have a Sony to deal with forbidding 3rd party programs.
lots of thing "coming" ......soon™Quote:
A: We require more time for this, but we are looking into making it happen.
Theres no evidence this is the process at all, the whole point to a API framework is to designate rules that the addon has to comply with, this in theory means it shouldn't break code because the addon does not write or alter the game code, these are not skyrim type mods where it does configure the game.
The addon should replace or expand the functionality of the existing UI because the existing UI is attached to the API or generates a window based on existing information in the game, there is no writing or altering of the existing game code such as making character models look different.
This.
Have any of you even considered how console players would install the addons? They would have to be downloaded via the PSN store. Now how would players get them uploaded to there in the first place? The logistics of making a bespoke system for this just for the console players is ridiculous. That is why we won't be likely to ever see them. As usual though, since consoles can't have them us PC players can't have them either...
But that means no community created add-ons could be enabled until SE adopted, adapted, and released them individually. That's not how addons work on PCs, but it's the only way they could work on a mixed platform game. And it would take a lot of effort from SE for each of them. If they're putting in that much effort for a feature, they could just as well put the feature in the main game where it's not an addon at all. That would make community developed addons into little more than feature suggestions.
He hasnt seemed to really answer any of the questions so far..
Almost every response he's given has been "Please, give us more time." I mean.. why even have live letters if they aren't going to be able to actually answer most of the questions.. :/
I wish they would allow UI add ons asap, I am in NO WAY knowledgeable enough about this stuff to make anything!!! lol.
But to those that are, please make an add on like Bartender in wow if they ever do allow them here O.o ughhhhh!
Most of the live letters I've read up on have a lot of "(insert server/playstation/staffing) limitations", a bunch of "we're looking into it" and "Please look forward to it.™" anytime popular requests make it into the questions. I'm sure we'll eventually see some of the stuff pop up in the next major patch or two, but there's other stuff we'll never hear about again for months on end until they deem it worthy of an info update in some distant live letter down the road.
Edit: I've kept tabs on every live letter since patch 2.0 days and the theme is the same more often than not.
With all the "limitation", Sony crap and whatever convoluted system required for PS, they should really consider making platform specific clients a thing. Why do PC players have to suffer and experience a less enjoyable game experience because of PS limitations? You play on console, you accept the limitations. You want all the nice stuff and bling? Well, get a PC.
I find it ridiculous how they use the limitations to not implement stuff into the game. No one is saying to lower the quality for PS players but don't use it as an excuse to not give extras for PC.
This is the funny thing, I can't think of any addons that couldn't work on the PS4, so sony obviously has something else as a problem and this is the problem with console makers, they are stubborn as hell even though they most likely don't need to put much effort once the API has been implemented as the API will govern the rules and boundaries of said playermade addons.
No to interface addons. It already destroyed WoW, why do you people want in FFXIV?
Threat meter is included, the UI is customizable, DPS Meters are not necessary and just create an even more hostile environment in the game.
I will never understand this.
Bethesda is creating add-ons/mods for Fallout 4 so it is either not the addon issue or PS4 is not the problem because addon/mods are possible for PS4. PS4 is getting a major hardware overhaul which may be why they can use the mods and addons for Fallout 4 as well as adding 4k monitor compatibility
As much good as they can bring, I can't see public DPS meters going in without being abused by the community. There will be those tryhards that treat every mode like a savage raid and unnecessarily bully those who underperform. The kicking is already retarded for SephEX and it doesn't need to spread.
The feature itself is great, but the playerbase is awful.
his response was :
so more than like they will implement a mod manager , so u can download and activate mods as u wishQuote:
this is not about, ‘You have to have a PC,’ ‘You have to do it yourself.’ The idea is you go to play the game, there’s a menu option, you click on it, and there’s a bunch of stuff for you to download. And you click on the stuff that you want and you start playing a game with these new mods. So we want it to be a really streamlined, fun experience. There’s still specifics that we have to work out. It’s part of our post-launch plan.”
I'm going to sound like a gigantic dick but i'm gonna say this anyway.
If consoles don't support the addon API, just release it to the PC, player discrimination? You're already restricting yourself when you choose to play on a console. Almost every game released on consoles and PC both, the PC version is superior and sometimes offers more (Addon's, ability to mod the game, etc).
I don't understand why players and devs both TRY and HOPE for equality between every system, this may happen on the future depending on how consoles are built, but not now, not with how these consoles structures are and specially with an old console with severe limitations (ps3).
I do hope they manage to do it, really i do, it would be awesome and groundbreaking if everybody got it, but if the development is taking years and years more than it should have, just stop it and release it where you can.
addons wont happen and if any addons do appear it will be for pc such as the dx11 surport.
consoles cant manage stuff like this but would be mean to cut surport of all console users.
It really makes no difference when SE releases this API. If and when they do, it will be so restricted as to be useless anyway.
Man i just upgraded from ps3 to ps4 to get away from this kind of "hate"? What kind of add-ons would you absolutely need to play this game? I'm serious, what kind? What would it do? That doesn't involve a ui overhaul. Maybe im just some lowlife console user to understand what significance or type of add-ons what benefit this game, but i would like to see reason behind the need.
The only add on this game would ever need is an add on to make the butts bigger. Maybe also the bust. Everything else is superfluous and would have no effect beyond spreading the hate.
The issue isn't about how MMO addons generally work. It's about how console addons (regardless of MMO or not) work.
Typically with MMO plugins, the game developer adds in support for a scripting system. (LUA is the one I'm familiar with, as it's what LOTRO uses. I've written a couple plugins for that game and used several others.) Users can then use that scripting language to interact with whichever game features the developer gave that scripting system access to. Within the limitations of that access, they can develop whatever they like, install it on their system, share it with other players to install on their systems, etc.
That last part is what doesn't work with consoles. You can't write a script (or get one from someone else) and install it on your console. To install a FFXIV addon onto a console, Square Enix would first have to put that addon up for sale on the PlayStation Store. (The price can be free, but it still uses the Store interface.) Then players would be able to download that add-on from the Store and install it into their game.
SE isn't going to put in a system that would require them to be a middleman in the release of each individual plugin (and each successive version of each plugin, as many of them get modified frequently). On PCs, they wouldn't have to, but to get them onto consoles, they would.
