New player introduction/questions

Hi all! I'm new FF as well as the MMO scene itself. I'm about half a month in, and I really enjoy this game, it's very fun. I eventually want to become a bit more hardcore, but I'm not rushing. Upon starting, I did a bit of research, and the Monk class really appealed to me, and I like everything about it so far, but the dungeons are becoming a bit less enjoyable. I've been doing research, but maybe I just suck at the game lol. Anyway, I have some questions, if you guys don't mind helping a newb out:

1) How do I get better at dungeons?

2) Is there an introductory MNK guide somewhere? As I'm having trouble understanding some rotations, which leads me to my last question.

3) How does the rotation consist of consecutive Coeurl form moves? I thought I had to go from Opo-Opo>Raptor>Coeurl, but I'm seeing things like Demolish>Snap Punch. It's a bit confusing.

First off welcome and glad to see you are enjoying the game.

1. Getting better comes over time. As you get more familiar with bosses and mechanics and your class you will naturally get better.

2. You could just Google monk rotation but ffxivguild.com I thought was a good source of information.

3) Your level 50 skill, Perfect Balance, allows you to use skills without being in the required form. Maybe that's what those rotations were suggesting?

I'd like to know why dungeons have become less enjoyable. Or why you think you suck or why you are trying to enjoy them better. Is it a little confusion on the rotation you should be using? Is it the way other people are acting? Is it a perhaps long wait time to enter a dungeon? Perhaps a better hotbar / crossbar layout? Hate the Disco Ball effect especially when you ramp up to speed? (Ok that last one was a bad dig)

Like Dust Bunny said there is a skill later that lets you use skills "out of order". So your rotation will depend on what you currently have available, not what a level 50 (or if there is an updated one for level 60) rotation says. And it could depend on the situation. You can remove an enemy buff, silence, stun, DoT, AOE, etc. Be fluid, have fun, experiment, remember your side / rear attack bonuses, and find something that works for you!

Well, some of the dungeons, not all, are becoming less enjoyable because it's a bit difficult to understand them. The last one I did (The Last Sigil I think) I died twice on the boss, and I don't even know how or why. I dodged all the AOEs, yet I was still taking dmg even though I was always either behind, or on the flank of the boss. I've decided that I'd just play the dungeons more often to hopefully get a better understanding.

at later dungeons you're really not supposed to do it blind (well you can, but you should find people who want to do it with you).

FF14, especially later on, heavily depend on specific mechanics. Things you must do, levers you must press, you must look away from the boss at certain points, adds you must kill or you'll get instantly killed, etc. Remember the Ifrit Nail that you have to kill or your party get wiped? Like that x1000

Most people suggest at least reading about dungeons before doing it first time, but even if you not do that, just say to your party that you're new and would like to know the boss mechanics, and most people will help you.

I see, thanks. I'll browse around the forums and see if I can find a post about the dungeons to read up.

Playing melee classes in dungeons always drives me crazy, mobs seem to be a lot harder on anything close to them over ranged classes. It might just take you a lot more practice to get down boss patterns and the such. Don't be afraid to tell your group it is your first time in there either. Most people are really understanding, and will give you tips on the fights, so you don't go splat to mechanics :D

Used that while I leveled, cause I was missing some side quest unlocks. Clicking on the dungeon's (or trial, or raid) name will link you to all the stratagies for the bosses as well :D

Going by your level on the forums, level 41, I am guessing that you are talking about The Stone Vigil. If you are talking about the last boss, the dragon (well, ok, they are all dragons, but...) then yeah as long as you see the boss, and avoiding the circle ice aoes, you shouldn't be dying. Now, if you were in front (you not) or if it was up in the air doing his strafing runs, that's different. Hopefully the links provided by everyone can help you nail down the specific tactics for the boss you were having trouble with.

And I like that it is just you understanding the dungeons that is your concern. With a quick read about them, more runs in them, group members providing any tips during, you should get comfy in time. Meaning, it sounds like you are basically ok with your UI set up, basically fine with your rotations, the people you meet, etc.

One thing that might have happened on the last boss of stonevigil is that you did dodge the circle aoe, but then returned to their position after it looked the attack was over. However the circles leave an ice pool behind them which kills person standing in them quickly. And being white on nearly white it can be hard to notice if not knowing what to look for.

Of course it takes time to improve but there are some generic tips which could help in any situation

- if a boss is tanked properly but suddenly starts to come to the middle of the arena: he' s preparing something bad.
Be aware of his cast bar (you should use focus target), or if he s looking at you with insistance you re probably going to have a mechanic to deal with.

- most of the time when a boss disappears during a fight that could mean i) it will be time for AOE circles on the ground, be ready to dodge; 2) he may attack you from above so dont hesitate to rotate your camera.

- adds should always be your top priority in 99.99% of the situations. It s always safer to kill adds fast even if you dont know whats going on.

- keep an eye on your debuffs and/or boss buffs. Remember the doom debuff from the 1st boss of Qarn? This kind of stuff often happens.

- always give priority to mechanics 1st unless you re dramatically overgeared and the team is looking to burn the boss (not in leveling phases!)

- each type of mobs tend to share the same behavior: most golems have large conal AOEs, giants/cyclops all tend to have large circular swings, snakes = probably willing to hit you with the tail (aka caduceus tail whip), dragons tend to suck, bees / bombos have long cast spells with a lot of damages, they generally deserve to be killed asap etc.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, help, and advice guys, I really appreciate it! The links have also been very helpful! When I get to Lv 60 I'll be able to make full use of all the guides, and tips within. Until then, story and dungeons ^^.

Also in stone vigil the boss does an attack if i remember right its called "rime wreath" anyhow its a roomwide aoe not big damage but if your not getting heals that will hurt you as well. Gearing also helps and if you check the side quests they always offer at least one set of gear for your current main class. lvling up the rotations you use will also change since you have new skills and new ways to work with them. I know when i lvled monk was sort of frustrating when i got to fifty basically had to rearrange my entire hot bar since i play on controller and had to set it up to a much easier to muscle memory set up lol. Ps I'm on leviathan too so feel free to send me a /tell to Joh Kehr if you need some help with something :D

You really don't have to study any leveling dungeons or other instances beforehand, they're simple enough that you can figure out the mechanics when you see the fight. It's not commonly expected for first timers to know what to do beforehand until very late endgame at level 60. If you want to, when you enter an instance for the first time, you can type in party chat that you're new and would appreciate if your party members would tip you about any mechanics that might instantly kill you or make you wipe your party. Remember leveling dungeons and instances are meant for practice. :)

Hey, I guess level 49 is technically new! Anyways, I wanted to know: How much content is there for a player who can't afford Heavensward? Because it's going to be a very long time before I can buy a $30 game...

Well, in a (kupo)nutshell, a lot. You will have access to everything that was in the game added up to the 2.55 patch (in other words, the game as it was just prior to the expansion being released), which is still a lot of content. The only drawback is the level cap will be locked at the default level of 50, as the expansion is required to level beyond this to 60 even if you don't access anything else, not to mention the main story scenario will remain frozen on it's cliffhanger at the end of the 2.55 story (it is continued in the expansion).

So it is well worth investing in the expansion eventually, even if you don't get it right away, as there is still plenty to tide you over til then. :)

That link above just covers the big points, there is a ton of other stuff to do besides all of that. If you check achievements in game, you can see a few things to keep you busy there :D


Also, keep an eye on Steam, and SE's website, they do sales a few times.Last one was 50% off in February if I recall. (which I just missed!) I found HW worth it before I started in on the lvl 50 story quests though. I ended up level 55 by the time I even started HWs main story!!!!.... Which helped a ton, cause I still ended up short of lvl 59 and 60s requirements, but not by a lot. It would have been 5 levels more short if I did!

If you are new to a dungeon, just let the party know and most of the time someone will explain the boss mechanics to you. You can watch videos to get the overall feel for things, but the best teacher is going to be experience. You can watch all the videos in the world on something like Titan, but you'll still feel like you did a horrible job until you've been through it a few times. Don't worry about the elitest pricks who tell you to "git gud" and to "know fite nubs", they've just forgotten that before they became experience in the fights/dungeons/trials, that they were new too.

As far as I know, you can still buy the expansion on Steam, it gives you a code to activate on your account, not 100% sure how that all works, I bought my stuff through SE's website (where PC and PS versions were both on sale). You might want to check other sites selling the PS3 stuff, maybe amazon / Ebay, or a local game stop for sales.

Steam version is not compatible even with the "regular" PC version, so unfortunately that doesn't work. If you play on PS3 and have the PS3 version of ARR, you'll need PS3 version of Heavensward.
