Newish tank how bonus stats

I recently was told the new patch was making vitality the only main stat tanks will use as it will benefit damage and health pools. However looking at a video of the patch notes it didn't seem to address this can someone let me know if the change is happening? Otherwise I feel I need to retrain from pure vitality to pure strength.

Thanks again for the quick response. Appologizing if I sound extremely stupid, just found it hard to believe most classes essentially put all their bonus points into one attribute without variant so I was trying to think it all over form multiple angles. Just showed my noob colors.

Sadly, the game doesn't offer any variety in any aspect, including stats... Also, as a side note, if you do DRK, please don't ever take Darkside down, fearing your mp is gonna run out.

Will do. Leveling Warrior all the way until I can pick it up, then I'll decide between the three. My first character is a tank and this is essentially my first MMO I'm in for a good time at end game I can tell.

Up until 3.2 it scaled off STR, now it will scale off VIT. Same thing I guess.

Yeah, it's probably just confusing wording. I guess they could've just said "for damage", though, so it's weird they decided to specify "physical".

Make sure you level a GLD to at least 22 to get Provoke. (You need 15 GLD anyway to turn your MRD into a WAR) Its your Taunt and considered a must have for both WAR and DRK. Getting the GLD to level 34 will also get you Awareness which will abolish Critical Hits on yourself. It will be useful when you hit level 56 Warrior and get a Defensive cool-down that parry's everything in front of you at the expense of getting critically hit on the sides.

Don't bother with Piety. Unless DRK can get 12k MP it won't matter.

I'd actually argue to get GLD to 34 for Awareness, as it has some really nice synergy with anything that increases your parry rate (because of how parry works, any parry cooldown will become more effective when you use it with Awareness (not to mention the ~5% mitigation it offers by itself). Raw Intuition, Dark Dance (without Dark Arts), and Bulwark are all amplified substantially when coupled with Awareness, so it is very worth taking, in my opinion

It's just that Provoke is vital (due to primals and raid bosses with tank swap mechanics), whereas Awareness has "nice synergy", as you put it =) And no, nulling crits on yourself doesn't automatically make any parry cooldown better -- unless all parry cooldowns have "automatic crits if attacked from flank/behind" ^^; (I only know the WAR one, which has that)

Actually, nullifying crits does help with parry/block cooldowns, as crits are checked before parries/blocks. This means that during RI you can still be crit, unless you also have Awareness going. It helps with Dark Dance as well, but to a lesser extent (ie you get all the increased parry rate returns without having to worry about any of them being overwritten by a crit). Bulwark/Sheltron same thing.

Thanks for everyone being so supportive. Just saying it looks like If I stick with warrior or do dark knight i'll have to level both either monk and paladin or paladin and warrior really high anyhow for the cross class skills, Not sure why pretty much ALL the vital tank skills are buried in paladin and not warrior at all. Oh well though. Figure my warrior will have to be 50 for a whiles before I can even get dark knight, while leveling to that point do I need to get provoke before then?

Gladiator (and eventually paladin) are the easiest of the tanks to play, so the skills that matter are assigned to that class with the assumption new players will play that first, instead of struggling with marauder/warrior for 50 levels not having access to stuff like Provoke, Awareness, or Convalescence.

Also, yes, you want Provoke tout suite. It's the most useful skill in your arsenal for grabbing mobs that run away from you, or performing tank swaps, or pulling things that are out of range of your normal ranged pull.

I suspect it may be a translation mistake. If the "attack power" stat is known as "physical damage" in JP then someone doing a quick patch note translation could easily make such a mistake. Similar things have happened before.

That's unfortunately just how this game works. The bonus stats are a false sense of customization. You're given a choice to send them, but you really only have one best stay to allocate them to.

I actually noticed that I regenerated mana using blood weapon and unleash.
Not sure if this was a mistake, and has been rectified, but judging from that I suppose it counts as physical damage?
(Like the few "magical" attacks that can be parried.)

Valid question, and one I played with myself. At level 60 I momentarily moved my points from VIT to PIE. The trade off was I lost about 3k HP in exchange for 300 MP. Considering that just one unleash at this level is over 700 MP, the loss in HP didn't even even out to half an unleash. As was stated, not a worthwhile trade off. Also I tested INT accessories to see if it increases the damage of my magic attacks. It does not. Stick with full VIT.

People are probably going to argue with me over this, but your priority is:

Magic Defense > Physical Defense > Vitality > Parry > Crit > all.

Why Parry? Because you're going to be taking a lot of damage over the course of a fight. Parry on gear will usually get you between a 20% and 40% rate, depending on level and stuff, which over infinite non-dodged, non-critical hits translates to 4% to 8% total physical mitigation (since Parry doesn't proc on dodged or critical strikes, and when it does proc, mitigates 20% damage). When accounting for dodge and crit, that probably goes down to 3%-6% total mitigation, depending on the encounter. But even so, if you're taking 50-200 times your HP pool in damage over the course of an encounter (some parses had 15k HP tanks taking upwards of 2.5M damage), that translates to 1.5-12 times your HP mitigated. In end-game, if you have 20k HP? That can mean 30k-240k mitigation. That's more than a few healer GCDs saved by having Parry on your gear instead of Crit or some DPS stat that tanks shouldn't be worrying about anyway.

Mitigation is mitigation. Even if it's considered crappy mitigation, it's still mitigation, and should still be the no. 1 goal of tanks.

Weird i've heard it was opposite in this game. Isn't a warrior and dark knights utility as the offtank to bring dps? Aren't the DPS stats better for ending the fight sooner and meeting dps checks?

That was true in 3.0-3.15, when the current endgame tier was designed with incredibly tight DPS checks, intended for much higher item levels than what the groups attempting the content had available to them. Square Enix has said that they're relaxing the DPS requirement and pushing difficulty in other parts of the encounters, instead. Some might argue that it's still true in progression raiding, and if your team does encounter a DPS check you can't beat, then you can consider it. For the other 95% of content, though, mitigation reigns supreme.

Most people here will argue against this and try to tell you/me I'm wrong. I'll let them state their piece without argument so you can decide for yourself.

They are. Parry is trash due to it's RNG nature, only working on Physical damage, and the amount of the stat it actually takes to increase the % that parry will actually activate. This is worse if you're playing Paladin as Blocking with your shield negates parry, thus it (parry) having less value.

Also offensive sub stats have just increased in value to tanks due to the recent changes in VIT/STR, meaning while Parry was trash before, you should be avoiding it like the black plague if you want to increase your DPS.

Really though if you're not in a week 1 progression group this probably won't have as huge of a impact on you.

As for your original question, all bonus points should go into VIT. Accessories ( right side gear) with VIT, but no parry is your best standard gear. If the vit gear does have sub stats, look into the strength equivalent instead to increase DPS.

Best currently seems to be crafted accessories though while placing VIT or STR into the extra slots, the recent update has it so that they cannot be over melded.

Take this as a outline and look further into it as things are always changing.
