Samurai and Ala Migho

I read on the french forum that Yoshida said Samurai will be DPS and the next big city in 4.0 will be Ala Migho. Is it true? Does he said that? Or it's just some kind of rumors? I mean, the Samurai job has not be officialy annonced, no? And for the patch 4.0, geez, there is no patch notes for the 3.2 yet, so...

Probably rumors, but Samurai/Ala Mhigo is expected (personally prefer Dancer, or another dual-wielding class/job). As 3.2 is set for February, we won't get patch notes til mid-Jan at the earliest.

I think he said it before that samurai "should" be a DPS and I hope that's the way he's going to make it.

I am fairly certain Red Mage, Blue Mage and Samurai were heavily suggested to be the next jobs added in the Anniversary 18th floor event.

While not all at once like 3.0 but perhaps like every other patch id hope, afterall they said they wont release 3 together right? Seriously asking, i dont recall haha.

Anyway I am hoping Samurai does dps, want a sword class that is not a tank, though guess id take red as the alternative sword dps, cant imagine 3 new dps classes.

Doubtful on the new job every other patch, as they did mentioned that it takes a year to create and develop a single class/job. Would be nice though.

In a way I kinda throw it that they may have 3 set out but then any fixes or tweaks they can look and focus on just one class at a time per 4.1/4.2/4.3 update and perfect the class per big update versus how they had all 3 out at one time. I say its a long shot but seems more plausible if its done that way.

I agree with you i'm sure they will do it every patch..........its not like part of the dev team is not working on the jobs already such as story,design,etc....theres alot involved in a single job in ff14. I never said they won't 3 new jobs per expac ...they only said they won't be all at once.........so being released every patch after xpac makes sense

I don't think anything they say has any merit. After the whole..SMN will get more pets and then didn't, the whole FC alliance thing, add ons, interesting stats on gear back, open world primals, there is just too much they say and don't put in so I read nothing anymore what they have to say about this game and do not believe any of it until I see it. :/ As far as I am concerned they are back to how they were before 1.0 lol.

Hopefully they'll give more thought in putting together a new job. I personally believe the 3 new jobs suffered greatly due to the devs having to do too much. Not only did they they work on the expansion, but each job had 5 new abilities.

Some jobs have improved ... others not so much. I think the MCH pretty much highlights what happens when the devs don't have enough time. They can't even bother to make MCH's aetheroconveter (equivalent to BRDs arrows/ AST deck holder) different per weapon. Let alone animation.

If they only release a single new job though, that will completely bork duty finder queuing...oh wait, everyone will just fate spam anyhow.

None of those, except for the pets, were actually promised. The reason for not adding more pets was a good one, and they offered a great alternative solution.

I don't recall him mentioning they would limit to 1 job only. What he said was they won't release 3 at once. Meaning 2 is still possible.

I can't see Samurai as tank now that we have Dark Knight.

The issue with 3 jobs in Heavensward is rooted back that 4 were in development. Ninja came out in 2.4, and the stress of finishing and balancing Ninja on top of the load of 3 other jobs was too much.

Yoshida hinted the Moonfire Faire had a hint towards the amount of new jobs at the anniversary stream. He's also stated he wants Samurai, but held back on slapping it in HW since we had just gotten a Japanese inspired job with Ninja.

As for Ala Mhigo being the next city, it certainly seems that their liberation is our next goal. Whether or not Ala Mhigo is the new city-state, or the new Mor Dhona/Idyllshire town is what I'm wondering.

Um, sorry if this has been said before, but wouldn't samurai perhaps be more suitable for a Doma expansion?

There was the whole thing about how it takes a year to make a job and that with Heavensward, they had to do triple the work in that time. They said that between that WHILE making Rogue/Ninja, they said all of that was something they never wanted to do again.

Given that they've had more than that much time to come up with new job details (one year for 3.x v. almost two for 4.x) and that they likely have some sort of template for job design by now (at least tanks and healers) that it seems HIGHLY unlikely that we'll just get two jobs unless they put far too many resources into something else.

I expect 3 jobs to be honest. 1 tank, 1 melee DPS, 1 healer, that would give us 4 tanks, 4 melees, 4 ranged and 4 heals. We all know how the FFXIV dev team likes balance in all things.

It also allows for nice even splits like.
2 MT
2 OT
2 DPS melee DPS
2 support melee DPS
2 DPS ranged DPS
2 support ranged DPS
2 Main healers
2 Off healers
And further splits like.
1 high skill tank
2 average skill tanks
1 easy mode tank
and so on.

I just have to ask... how is Samurai a fitting a choice for Ala Mhigo?

Granted, we didn't especially have much of a lore excuse for adding in a massive wave of Au'ra either (save for one character meant, iirc, to be among the relatively few surviving members of her race), but at least the jobs fit Ishgard well enough.
I'm not saying they were inherently based in Ishgard, only that the concerns of their own politics or philosophies (AST and DRK respectively) meshed well enough with what concepts Ishgard put out. Would the same be true of SAM? What connection do you see?

E.g. is it Doman influence carrying over from the last addition?
Or are we really imagining Old English Hyurs donning lamellar (or dressed down in just cloth, if you prefer) and whipping out katanas?...

If that's the impetus for adding the jobs, then I think we can be pretty sure we'll be seeing the exact same "<class> reskin" comments from before (e.g. Dark Rampart, Wanderless Barrel, WHM Sect). If they're intending each to add only to a very particular rank and file, they're scarcely adding options at all. Generally they add little more than choice of aesthetic.

None of the jobs in Heavensward were particularly tied to Ishgard. The Astrologians came from Sharlayan, guns are much more common is Limsa and the Machinists could have fit there no problem,

and the Dark Knights could have conceivably ended up at any city state watching refugees be killed by any corrupt set of guards to be honest.

I wouldn't mind the 1 tank, 1 dps, 1 healer setup to be honest. I'd be quite happy with Samurai tank, Red mage melee DPS and Dancer or Chemist healer.
I would hope that they play differently to the existing jobs though.

They never even said 3 was impossible to do, only that it was a lot of work and the comments came while they were also referring to releasing ninja in 2.4 so the context is a bit muddled on if they were referring to technically developing 4 jobs at once or not. Even then his comments were not definitive saying they'd never release 3 jobs during an expansion, only that they wouldn't do a mid-cycle job release again like ninja.

Then during the 14 hour broadcast he supposedly almost gave away the number of jobs to be added in 4.0 and it had to do with the moonfire faire (3 rangers = 3 new jobs likely). So even If it's hard I believe they would be adamant to keep the quality up and release 3 new jobs, one for each role at 4.0.

I'll bet money that it's not just one job. That would be more than a bit pathetic tbh.

Considering there is no Doma anymore and it's survivors were brought to Eorzea by Yugiri it actually makes more sense for us to learn the job in Eorzea than in the pile of rubble that is Doma. That's if samurai is specifically Doman and not simply Othardian. Even still, there is little reason for us to travel so far away anytime soon, or at all. They've shown no intent on making some asian themed expansion especially since one of their reasons for not going with Samurai for Heavensward was because it would have been another japanese themed job so soon after ninja, this tells me they have little interest in making lots of content themed on japanese motifs.

Nothing says SAM will be rooted in Ala Mhigo. In fact, if SE keeps their promise of not keep the new jobs behind the expansion's walls, it's reasonable to think of something like a Doman refugee in Mor Dhona strugging to keep the Samurai's school of combat alive.

I mean, Astrologian is a Sharlayan job, after all.

Who says Samurai has to be from Ala Mhigo? And the Ishgard jobs fit well enough because SE made them so. Before heavensward Machinists would have made zero sense coming from Ishgard. To use your example of "old English hyur putting on lamellar and whipping out katanas" how did "old English knightly and religious medieval elezen putting on gadgets and whipping out guns and robots" make sense? It only made sense because SE wrote them into the story in a believable way. On top of that one of the main characters for that job story to teach machinists how to shoot was a 1.0 character from Limsa lominsa.

Astrologian's are also Sharlayans and their job story had very little to do with Ishgard and everything to do with Sharlayans and their politics.

Dark Knight is the only one that has some semblance of fitting into Ishgard's society naturally and even that was severely underplayed to the point it could have been from anywhere.

Even with all that said, it's also unlikely we will even start in Ala Mhigo at the beginning of 4.0 and will more likely be fighting our way to reclaiming it during the 4.0 story which means any new jobs wouldn't be tied to the city state anyways. As such there's plenty of room to write in a displaced Samurai trainer from Doma who teaches our adventurers his ways to fight back against the same empire that took his home. While their home is gone, the assistance in helping another group of people who suffered under the same enemy is a noble one and a likely story thread.

I want to add that the notion that any job has to be tied to city states we have access to is an absurd one as well. The majority of our jobs have nothing to do with any of the city states as it is, and we have had plenty from cities we didn't or don't have access to.

Warriors are from the far north of eorzea, summoner is an ancient allagan form of magic, scholars are from nym, black mages have roots in mhach, ninjas are from the far east/doma-ish. Monks are from Ala mhigo of which we have no access to atm, dragoons are from Ishgard of which we were able to become long before we ever stepped foot in ishgard.

That leaves only 3 jobs that have any real ties to their city states: Paladin, White Mage, and Bard.

So I'll never understand when people think there needs to be some kind of stipulation that these jobs be tied specifically to some arbitrary city state when the point of them is to have varied roots and different stories.

The notion of jobs being tied to cities comes from classes being heavily rooted in the lore of their respective home cities.

The three new jobs in HW did give us some background on Ishgardian culture, even if not quite as heavily as ARR classes do.

That's the root of the expectation.

Exactly. And with only two jobs tied to Othard (ninja and samurai) i would love to keep at least one till we get there. But Shippuu really seems to hate the idea of going to Othard.
On the off chance we do get Samurai now I think DPS is the most likely choice. Red Mage, Samurai and Dancer top every new job wish list and Yoshida definitely knows this. So many people assume that it will be Dancer as a healers, Red Mage as a DPS, and Samurai as a tank.

But I think we will be in for a surprise again. With Heawensward we wwere sure that the gun wielding class would be a healer as we got ninja as a DPS in 2.4 so Astrologian came out of the blue.
What I think is that Red Mage would be the healer. Sounds strange, but think about it. RM was always in a sort of support role and healing people with white magic is one of the things it is good at. RM would be the anti bard. Two support classes ending up as a ranged dps and a melee healer respectively. The DPS role filled by the samurai instead, to finally give us a sword wielding DPS class.
And dancer, a tank. Yes, a tank. It is really hard to come up with new and interesting ways to tank to make it different from the previous ones. What to do with enemy damage. Well how about a tank that dodges damage? You draw attention with your dance and spin and jump away from incoming blows.

honestly, i prefer after we do have complete access to eorzea, that we take direction for the empire continent more than orthard.

Honestly, I think we might get 2 DPS as that is where we have gaps in our gear distribution. Every main stat modifier has 3 Jobs associated with it, with the exception of STR and INT which has 2 each. (PIE doesn't count) In the boring logical world I see Samurai being a STR based DPS which wears the same armor as DRG. And the RDM or DNC class being an INT based DPS class that wears Caster armor.

This is however a farcry from where I want to see the classes...

Samurai - Melee DPS that focuses on slow Heavy Hit combos (one cut one kill mentality) make them the BLM/MCH of melee DPS.

RDM or DNC (personally I'd like to see Dancer with whips)- Hybrid Class that can dance between a Healer and a Tank. It would pay homage to the elements of both classes that everyone really fell in love with, which was their sorta Omni tool utility. Something that I think would be lost if you just slap the DPS tag on them and call it a day.

I don't want to get into the whole SAM Tank vs DPS debate. Already done it too much in the past. Just stating my opinion and a SAM Tank could perfectly fit the whole theme of an evasion Tank. RDM could easily fit the Sword DPS everyone wants and DNC could easily fit the role of the DoW Healer everyone wants. Damn everyone is happy, except their not. No one will be happy with the decision SE makes, some will be disappointed some will love it. We'll just have to see in a few months for the announcements that are to come.

I also believe if people are so tied to jobs needing to be tied to their city state, Samurai's could be a Gyr Abania elite soldier, a bit like how PLD like you mentioned is basically an elite Ul'dah guard. (?) Although no one has agreed with me on that point D: Because NIN and SAM need to be tied together I guess.

Well the only Samurai in game are the ones in the Heavensturn event. They are from the far east. According to Yoshie-P, Othard is the far east on Hydaelin. So yeah Samurai are definitely from Othard.

Both arguments of Katana and Shippuu have sence and are very solid.
Could very well be a Otharian/Doman trainer who end up on Gyr Arbaria, Mor dhona, etc and wants to teach the samurai skills. If ends to be on one of the new areas of the exansion, could be anything. Most likely perhaps beacuse he wants to help the resistance and doesnt want to see the ala mhigans suffer the same consecuences Doma did? Who knows...

Yes, I would prefer to wait till we go there, because I want to go there eventually, and I want at least one job that is tied to the place. I don't believe that is too much to ask. Of course if someone can come up with a new job that really fits Othard, I'm all for that.

Why doesnt make sence? Samurai is NOT an elite soldier of ala mhigo, period. But that doesnt mean that its npc trainers cant be there, they may well be there for whatever reason the game's lore puts them on there.

people tend to forget an important point Ala Mhigo is under occupation by the empire, everything link to them tradition was destroyed while the invasion...
then don't expect to have the town a place before a moment, we go in direction of ala mhigo, it don't means it will be a normal town directly.
