Wardrobe-System. What do you think?

Just look at this and dont tell me, you dont want to have this feature in FFXIV, too?

Blade and Soul Wardrobe System

I find this system pretty amazing. Instead of keeping all your stuff in several retainer banks, why dont we have a kind of "wardrobe"-log (or collection) of any previous obtained gear? As far as I know, SE said, that they cant give us more inventory space because of server performance. I think, this could be a nice solution ^^.

The idea behind this is, that you dont need to keep your glamour-items in your banks. Instead, you can use your wardrobe-log to glamour your gear in no time. You can still store your raid- and crafting-gear in your arsenal and banks, but if you want to keep an item just for glamour, you can use your wardrobe-log for it.

Advantages:
- More free space in your inventories and banks (server performance yay)
- No need to search every retainer or inventory for your glamour-items (much faster)
- Ordered list of every obtained gear, people will love to collect all gear-items for a complete set (gotta catch em all!)
- Achievement for 20 complete gear-sets or so (awww yisss) xD

The thing is, at least from SE's point of view, that a glamour log is STILL 'extra space' - after all, information about what items you've unlocked needs to be saved somewhere.

However, it is a very hollow excuse. At the MOST, the glamour log needs to consist of a series of item numbers. These do not need to be more than six characters long if we look at how many items, spells etc. exist in WoW after ten years - they're around 300,000 item numbers at this point, I think. Information about durability, spiritbond, color, who made the item; SCRAP IT. Reduce it to the barest minimum and you could most likely keep a glamour log in a 50 KB file.

But MOONLEG, you might say. Then you have to send that 50 KB back and forth ALL THE TIME!

Seriously. Who glamours their stuff mid-raid? Reduce glamour access to cities and housing areas, maybe a specific NPC like the Armoire and Summoning Bell.

But MOONLEG, you say then. What about all my glamour prisms?!

You know what? I don't care. They are a ridiculous system that just adds to clutter. They are 35 items (five grades, seven kinds) that serve no purpose other than a misguided attempt at making crafting useful for everyone.

While this would be amazing and people have been asking for it, one of the latest live letters gave us this:

So it looks like there were plans for it once, but those plans have been stalled indefinitely and currently there no plans for a armour/weapon log of sorts.

an absolute nightmare to optimize from the server point of view, the reason for this has been explained a number of times

The reason being that it will increase the amount of character data needing to be saved back to the server every 15sec (not sure about this figure) or suffer longer loading times between zones

that's before i even start on dye's and custom stats

on the subject of Character data I (and a member of my FC) got suspicions on how our data is store on the server (SQL)

I don't think the issue has ever been wether people want it but rather if SE can implement it. Its been an idea thrown around a lot before now.

Regardless SE says their are technical issues with how their servers are structured that makes such a system difficult. Lacking any real first hand knowledge I cant judge how serious an issue it is but I've heard friends in IT rant about frustrating server architecture and difficult system changes for it to sound like a valid issue to me.

But as you can see, other games managed to have a kind of log. And btw: we still have the same small inventory since 2.0 xD To buy more retainers and spread your gear in 8 retainers isnt an option.

Even when its not able to have a log in your menu, you can still make a NPC with the same feature (like moonleg said).

And yes, those prisms are pain. It makes no sense to have more than 2 prisms for all. Its also possible to dye gear after glamouring it. So, you dont really need to safe every kind of dying for each gear. And if you care about dyed gear with metallic colors: well, just keep it in your inventory/banks xD

Other games are built on different engines and use different software and as such their capacity for performance in various areas is different. Just cause one game can do something doesn't mean every other game can.

Also, its been pointed out that realistically FF14's inventory isn't actually that small compared to a lot of other games. As a base you have 100 slots in your inventory plus 325 slots in your Armoury plus another 350 slots with your two free retainers adding up to 725 slots. That more than a lot of games have. Even WoW has only had more than this thanks to them adding a second tab to their Void bank.

Regardless, SE has stated there are technical issues to why they currently can't implement such a system. Even if they did do it would might take years of delvopment. WoW's new Wardrobe as been in development for at least 3 years.

There is no excuse for SE not to do this... If a free to play mmo like DCUO can do it why cant a AAA mmo do it? DCUO even gives you a STYLE tab so you can see every piece you have earned and the even went as far as dividing each section up in groups like chest pieces and leg pieces. You can even try any piece you want so you can find the look you are going for then click save to equip that glamour FOR FREE at any time and anywhere in the game. IF a player goes afk for a minute or 2 while in a 4 person dungeon you can simply go to your style tab and start messing with your look.

All they need to do is to create a dedicated spot on the server that holds all this info and then tie it to each player. Anytime you want to change your appearance you simply click on the glamour tab which will pop up a window of your character in it so you can start looking through glamour pieces... as you are doing that it will temporarily cache every option you choose and once you are done just simply click save and boom the server instantly updates your look.

Apparently SE doesn't seek out better options to fully optimize their server space. If they are really worried about bottlenecks then limit where a character can change their looks... like only in towns and housing areas.... not a big deal and wont hurt the server load if they learn to delegate their servers.

Indeed Behli, the inventory isnt THAT small. But it wasnt increased since A Realm Reborn. So, its been more than 2 years and a lot stuff is stored in my retainer inventories. Thankfully, most of the Heavensward-Gear looks ugly, there is no need to keep them xD

The problem about the Armoury is, that you still need many slots for your gear, no matter if crafting or raiding. Lets do some math:
You have 13 categories (weapon, offhand, head, s.o.), there are 25 playable classes (DoH, DoW) with unique gear (crafting 180, esoteric 200). That makes 325 slots if you have each class-depended gear for every class. You can reduce that number with shareable gear (gear which can be used from several classes), but you still need a lot space for your gear, especially when you re playing many classes. And you can still store only 25 weapons in your Armoury. Or 25 headpieces. Or 25 Rings...

I dont deny, that there are some technical restrictions. But it will still be awesome to have this feature in the near future. And from the developer point of view, there is always a solution for any problem. Make it client side or try some other solutions. I dont really care for "new" Primals, Dungeons and Raids. I m looking for new features which makes the game more comfortable and interesting.

Its unbelievable that an mmo at this day and age doesnt have this feature. Especially this game where so many rewards are just for glamour.

This really seems like a handy system. And seeing as how they are not increasing the inventory space either(insert mogstation ad here), there's no reason not to keep suggesting some measure to cut down on inventory and glamour woes. Because this system from BnS looks very lovely and plenty of other games have made it easier to do.

only one problem with your point from the servers point of view:-

More inventory space or the "Glamour wardrobe" will still take inventory space which SE have gone on record in a live letter is not possible at this time due to technical issue

would you rather have:-

a) more inventory and have it take 2 mins to load into each zone
or
b) have the current level of inventory and the current short load times into each zones for SE to find an optimization in the future to give us more space

I was very surprised and disappointed to find this game has no wardrobe system. Every game I've played, including f2p, has had an extensive wardrobe system. If everyone else can offer it, I'm skeptical of any excuses they offer up here. Honestly, this is one of the few issues I have with this game that would keep me from recommending it to anyone.

I'm guessing from your response you have no server based technical knowledge and just because F2P (that will only last a year or 2) can do it with their back end doesn't mean that FFXIV can do it. while i don't know how FFXIV back end looks like it does sound like a back end issue which was converted from the mess that was 1.0

I would probably rather have a slightly longer zone load time and/or longer space between saves. Every 15 seconds seems too often. I'd think a minute would be fine. Slightly higher risk, sure, but I've never hard crashed. Reason being the current glamour/inventory system is way, way worse imho than slightly increasing those times. The system is so bad. There's too much to glamour (and it's the main reward), too little inventory space given all the jobs and crafting, and it's too clunky to manage. I also don't buy the argument that the actual file being sent back and forth couldn't be better optimized.

I probably wouldn't want to lose (at least) half a million dollars a month on retainer rentals either, so I'm not really surprised they're refusing to put one in.

But what i want is something like a catalogue, where every dungeon gear, that you once owned, is listed to try on (also with info where it drop).
Something like the fishing log, but with gear.

The reason for this is that it is no problem to try on crafted gear without owning that gear (thanks to crafting log and market board). But to try on dungeon gears that you don't own, you have to examine other players or have to wait until it drop.

Better glamor system would be nice...

I'm not as familiar with BnS's glamour system, but it seems sort of similar to GW2 - and I would LOVE to have that copied and dropped into this game. Basically, all of your weapon and armour "skins" are saved once you either equip, or specifically unlock the skin. After this point, no need to keep the original item. That would be amazing.


XIV needs a lot of help when it comes to wardrobe storage.

Sure they can. It's really more of an issue of whether or not they can afford to devote resources to such a feature, while managing other priorities. Even with limited resources, a solution is always possible, including partial and/or indirect solutions. I highly doubt that hypothetical speculated server issues are what's causing this, and many other requested improvements, to be implemented to the game.

Now what is neither a hypothetical nor a speculated issue is that inventory in this game is a problem (for many different players, for many different reasons). Sure there's the the option of buying retainers, but the retainer interface is an entirely separate batch of issues that also needs to be fixed.

I would think it would be in best interest of all involved (from the players, to the developers, to the ones in charge of the money) to get this issue sorted out sooner rather than later. I can't imagine it ending well if we don't get some manner of inventory related solution by the next expansion. If that ends up being the case, I'll be sure to have my popcorn at the ready.

Someone may have mentioned it, and i just missed it, but i'd actually prefer what WoW is doing with theirs in Legion. It records everything you could have gotten from quests and gives you access to it, even before this feature was added. At least that's the promise. Keep in mind though, it took WoW over 10 years to get this in, after having transmog and void storage, which was only added after removing keys or some such that made room for the data of item looks.

I say this as someone who has two and a half retainers full of glamour gear. ;)

People seem to be overestimating how taxing a sytem like this would be. A glamour log would work similarly to how our seasonal armoire chest works or how our crafting and gathering logs work. It's just a list of boolean flags. Is this item stored? Has this item been crafted? Have you gathered this item before? yes? no? This works in a completely different way than what our inventory system does.

Not all data associated with our characters is backed up every 15 seconds. This is specific to our on hand items. I'm damn certain the servers aren't derpy enough that they are constantly doing checks on what's in all of my retainers when I'm running a dungeon. If done right a full glamour log would only be doing a verification on your items when you change equipment, and would only request the full listing of flags when you bring up the glamour menu. Ex: When you change your helmet the game would send a request to check serverside whether or not the flag has been activated for owning helmet #87.

The only time it would need to send the entire listing of boolean flags is when you open up the glamour menu. Even this request shouldn't eat up too much traffic as at the most each flag would be 1 byte. With more efficient coding you can bring this down to 1 bit per item. Iirc this is how the mog slips work for storage in xi. Each bit in the bytes used to store the mog slip's information is used as a flag. Each individual bit is assigned an ID that matches up with an item. A 1 is a flag that the item is stored on the slip. A 0 is a flag that the item is not stored.

If this truely was some insurmountable task then glamour logs like this would not be including in just about every single modern mmo on the market. Repeating myself here. Again, we've already got quite a few logs like this already in place. The game already has boolean flags to keep track of: What items we've gathered for every class, What items we've crafted for every class, what portions of the map we've already uncovered, what mounts we've unlocked, what minions we've unlocked, what emotes we've unlocked, etc... These logs take up next to no space at all.

With the last response on the issue given either there was a misunderstanding on what exactly the players were asking, or they are prioritizing more important matters first. I'm willing to bet it's the latter, and the excuse was a way to pacify players who have little to no programming background.

I'd be glad, my retainers would be glad, who wouldn't?! SE, hop hop!

Blade and Soul and Guild Wars 2 can manage excellent Wardrobe systems. XIV? Not so much.

Whats the diference? If you ask me, the diference is care, thats all there is to it really. B&S and GW2 cared enough to create and implement such systems. On the other hand, the best people is ever going to get done about this in this game is maybe, 2 extra free retainers as the paid retainer cap is increased to 12.

Yeah, I remember reading something a while back on the subject where they used this with the entire amount of items in the game to show how much total size the entire log would take... And it wasn't that large.

That and they don't want to now, as they would lose the extra retainer income. Cancelled the ones I had, to show that I do not support it, but in the end I feel like I am just gimping myself.

I'd love this system to be put in, or at the very least a "chest" that can be crafted that allows us to deposit anything we wish into it (lke an armoire chest for crafted/dungeon gear) and make us go back and pick it out again to glamour. SOMETHING needs to give though in the long run

I would start by implementing a glamour log with a preset amount of space from the start, ex. 50 slots. In this glamour log you can freely insert weapons, armors, shields and off-hands, to be used as glamour when speaking to the hair cutting dude, which btw needs his own shop as he's constantly watching me while I sleep in my room and its creeping me out. The items in the glamour log will be held indefinitely until you remove it for something else and is technically an increase to inventory without having to shelve out real money so its a win-win for everyone. Sure it may use extra server space but that's what that new server in europe was bought for right?

Please SE consider this as the true end game content of FFXIV is glamour.... and possibly fishing.

implementing a Enhanced Armoire or Mog slip system is in theory possible if only the following data is needing to be stored:-

User ID, Item ID

with the following restrictions:-

you have to own the items to store it (and i mean store it, for abuse propose)

Pink items and relics can't be stored (to much info needed to be kept)
