Wardrobe-System. What do you think?

Just look at this and dont tell me, you dont want to have this feature in FFXIV, too?

Blade and Soul Wardrobe System

I find this system pretty amazing. Instead of keeping all your stuff in several retainer banks, why dont we have a kind of "wardrobe"-log (or collection) of any previous obtained gear? As far as I know, SE said, that they cant give us more inventory space because of server performance. I think, this could be a nice solution ^^.

The idea behind this is, that you dont need to keep your glamour-items in your banks. Instead, you can use your wardrobe-log to glamour your gear in no time. You can still store your raid- and crafting-gear in your arsenal and banks, but if you want to keep an item just for glamour, you can use your wardrobe-log for it.

Advantages:
- More free space in your inventories and banks (server performance yay)
- No need to search every retainer or inventory for your glamour-items (much faster)
- Ordered list of every obtained gear, people will love to collect all gear-items for a complete set (gotta catch em all!)
- Achievement for 20 complete gear-sets or so (awww yisss) xD

The thing is, at least from SE's point of view, that a glamour log is STILL 'extra space' - after all, information about what items you've unlocked needs to be saved somewhere.

However, it is a very hollow excuse. At the MOST, the glamour log needs to consist of a series of item numbers. These do not need to be more than six characters long if we look at how many items, spells etc. exist in WoW after ten years - they're around 300,000 item numbers at this point, I think. Information about durability, spiritbond, color, who made the item; SCRAP IT. Reduce it to the barest minimum and you could most likely keep a glamour log in a 50 KB file.

But MOONLEG, you might say. Then you have to send that 50 KB back and forth ALL THE TIME!

Seriously. Who glamours their stuff mid-raid? Reduce glamour access to cities and housing areas, maybe a specific NPC like the Armoire and Summoning Bell.

But MOONLEG, you say then. What about all my glamour prisms?!

You know what? I don't care. They are a ridiculous system that just adds to clutter. They are 35 items (five grades, seven kinds) that serve no purpose other than a misguided attempt at making crafting useful for everyone.

While this would be amazing and people have been asking for it, one of the latest live letters gave us this:

Q18: Do you have plans to implement a feature, such as a book that records items you have obtained once, and you can drop that item but still use it for glamour? With this feature it’ll free up the inventory space.

A18: Yoshida: We have no plans for this. We would increase the inventory space if this was possible.

So it looks like there were plans for it once, but those plans have been stalled indefinitely and currently there no plans for a armour/weapon log of sorts.

Nice idea from the client side

an absolute nightmare to optimize from the server point of view, the reason for this has been explained a number of times

The reason being that it will increase the amount of character data needing to be saved back to the server every 15sec (not sure about this figure) or suffer longer loading times between zones

that's before i even start on dye's and custom stats

on the subject of Character data I (and a member of my FC) got suspicions on how our data is store on the server (SQL)

I don't think the issue has ever been wether people want it but rather if SE can implement it. Its been an idea thrown around a lot before now.

Regardless SE says their are technical issues with how their servers are structured that makes such a system difficult. Lacking any real first hand knowledge I cant judge how serious an issue it is but I've heard friends in IT rant about frustrating server architecture and difficult system changes for it to sound like a valid issue to me.

And yes, those prisms are pain. It makes no sense to have more than 2 prisms for all. Its also possible to dye gear after glamouring it. So, you dont really need to safe every kind of dying for each gear. And if you care about dyed gear with metallic colors: well, just keep it in your inventory/banks xD

Other games are built on different engines and use different software and as such their capacity for performance in various areas is different. Just cause one game can do something doesn't mean every other game can.

Also, its been pointed out that realistically FF14's inventory isn't actually that small compared to a lot of other games. As a base you have 100 slots in your inventory plus 325 slots in your Armoury plus another 350 slots with your two free retainers adding up to 725 slots. That more than a lot of games have. Even WoW has only had more than this thanks to them adding a second tab to their Void bank.

Regardless, SE has stated there are technical issues to why they currently can't implement such a system. Even if they did do it would might take years of delvopment. WoW's new Wardrobe as been in development for at least 3 years.

There is no excuse for SE not to do this... If a free to play mmo like DCUO can do it why cant a AAA mmo do it? DCUO even gives you a STYLE tab so you can see every piece you have earned and the even went as far as dividing each section up in groups like chest pieces and leg pieces. You can even try any piece you want so you can find the look you are going for then click save to equip that glamour FOR FREE at any time and anywhere in the game. IF a player goes afk for a minute or 2 while in a 4 person dungeon you can simply go to your style tab and start messing with your look.

All they need to do is to create a dedicated spot on the server that holds all this info and then tie it to each player. Anytime you want to change your appearance you simply click on the glamour tab which will pop up a window of your character in it so you can start looking through glamour pieces... as you are doing that it will temporarily cache every option you choose and once you are done just simply click save and boom the server instantly updates your look.

Apparently SE doesn't seek out better options to fully optimize their server space. If they are really worried about bottlenecks then limit where a character can change their looks... like only in towns and housing areas.... not a big deal and wont hurt the server load if they learn to delegate their servers.

Indeed Behli, the inventory isnt THAT small. But it wasnt increased since A Realm Reborn. So, its been more than 2 years and a lot stuff is stored in my retainer inventories. Thankfully, most of the Heavensward-Gear looks ugly, there is no need to keep them xD

The problem about the Armoury is, that you still need many slots for your gear, no matter if crafting or raiding. Lets do some math:
You have 13 categories (weapon, offhand, head, s.o.), there are 25 playable classes (DoH, DoW) with unique gear (crafting 180, esoteric 200). That makes 325 slots if you have each class-depended gear for every class. You can reduce that number with shareable gear (gear which can be used from several classes), but you still need a lot space for your gear, especially when you re playing many classes. And you can still store only 25 weapons in your Armoury. Or 25 headpieces. Or 25 Rings...

I dont deny, that there are some technical restrictions. But it will still be awesome to have this feature in the near future. And from the developer point of view, there is always a solution for any problem. Make it client side or try some other solutions. I dont really care for "new" Primals, Dungeons and Raids. I m looking for new features which makes the game more comfortable and interesting.
