pretty much already been announced that the dev team plans on implementing all of the standard FF jobs at some point. Samurai being the most popular its almost guaranteed to get added. But just so you know its probably going to be a tank as the current trend recommends.
1) might want to say Great Katana since ninja already uses Katanas. 2) I'm really hoping they add a class that can dual like arcanist. Honestly I wouldn't care if they didn't add a new class and just made some of the existing classes more dual oriented in 4.0. Easy enough to do with warrior.
That actually has great potential for a dual class similar to arcanist. Call the class tachi or something then get Samurai as DPS and Shogun as Tank. Or are they going away from the whole class thing now? Since DRK/MCH/AST were just jobs and didn't have classes.
Iroha's stuck in Eorzea. I sense our future Samurai mentor.
Hopefully Samurai will be a dps. It'd be a real shame to have THREE sword classes and not one of them focused on doing damage.
A samurai class that has a Sword Drawn and Sheath mechanic would be nice. Some skills can only be used when the sword is out or sheathed. When in sheath, deals Blunt damage and drawn deals slash.
There have been a few hints dropped about Samurai being possibly next. The most recent anniversary event dropped a couple job names as possibilities. Samurai was one of them as I recall (including a discussion of two npcs over what is better, red or blue mage). Also, wasn't there a video where the devs were talking about what jobs they'd like to introduce on the main youtube channel for the game? I could be wrong but I recall Samurai being the one Yoshi-p brought up.
Maybe someone with a better memory can recall it for us.
We have 2 swordsman jobs, both are tank.
Samurai needs to be a DPS and the dev already said that it should be a DPS.
I think if they were to bring out a new Tank class, it should be entirety magic based, and no not like Dark Knight. As it stands the classes we got with 3.0 are very similar to FFXIV's 2.0 classes with different themes, in WoW they'd be no more than other specializations for existing classes. I'd honestly prefer if they gave the existing classes more flavour rather than add new ones, they did a fantastic job with differentiating Ninja from Monk and Dragoon, but with classes they seem rushed. Probably best to implement 1 or 2 classes per expansion, but make them unique in a way.
It doesn't need to be a tank lol, we have enough as is.
Come on Yoshi. If you ever implement SAM and use this as the bases for it, I would just shower you with money lol. DPS or Tank works just fine for me.
And it must have casting times. Every job in this game must have casting times! Casting is amazing, isn't it?
Well when the set up for raids is 4 DPS 1-2 tanks 2 healers and 4 man dungons are 2 dps vs 1 tank and 1 healer, there is a reason we have so many DPS jobs. because their are a lot of slots. besides dps jobs tend to be simple and easy to use in most content. i even had some people quit blm after heavensward because it was to "complicated" for them.
But as far as the topic goes SAM is most likely going to be DPS, it makes the most sense, another tank would not only be dumb but would just make a lot of people mad, like with DRK.
Honestly as the game is right now, we should focus more on balancing PLD and DRK more that we should adding a new tank. If we are going to add a new class it should be a DPS and by community demand it should be a samurai.
I can see it happening, especially since the SAM in FFXI has an ability called Third Eye, and Seigan is a defensive stance. There's also Blade Bash, which causes Stun.
In term of gear sharing balance, should new job be filling in the role that still have no gear sharing? Now, we have 3 tanks 3 healers 2 dex ranged and 2 caster already but no any job share melee gear. Samurai is fit for this situation from the most community hype and some leak from dev. Samurai should be DPS and share maiming gear with DRG. They have a lot of aspect like each other such as slow attacking but hit hard, can wear both heavy and light armor theme, and most skill in past series focus on attacking. Moreover, if Samurai is STR DPS, they can fill the 3rd job for slaying accessory too and left only casing accessory still share with 2 jobs (Red mage might be fill this slot in future). NIN is melee but they share aiming accessory with 2 dex ranged now. It will unbalance if they get 4th dex job for sharing it. I think 3 choice of tank are enough for this time. If we see new job order in previous, I think it is the time for STR melee.
2.0 SMN (2nd caster), SCH (2nd healer)
2.4 NIN (1st Dex Melee)
3.0 DRK (3rd Tank), AST (3rd Healer), MCH (2nd Dex Ranged)
4.0 Should be STR Melee? or 3rd Caster?
I would like to see a 3rd caster/magic job. A job that uses a dial or a clock as their weapon and are masters of time/time delation would be really awesome.
Based off from Wakfu's Xelor would be really cool.
Or a pure dps Archery class/job would be awesome as well.
Hate to say it, but I'm more inclined to believe that Red Mage will be the next job they put in. They did say something about not wanting an over load of eastern themed jobs after Ninja came out. SAM will most definitely come in later, just not anytime soon. Say if we have an expansion down the line where we go to Doma. Now for Red Mage I see it being a melee dps/caster type. It will use a foil (rapier) sword and a shield and it's skills/techs will be have the visual flair of spells. Probably have a few 'bard/machinist' style buffs to cover the jack of all trades/master of none the red mage has always been about.
Red Mage will probably be a sword dps.
Samurai would be a nice eastern tank. The defenders of Doma's lords etc.. Since we already have 2 eastern themed dps jobs it would be nice to branch off a little.
Ninja is Doma's dps job, Samurai could be Doma's tank, and maybe something else would be their healer?
You're looking at how the job mechanics in FFXI work completely wrong my friend. Every job in XI is pretty flexible in terms of what it can do (mainly thanks to how the sub job system works). Depending on the contend many "DPS" as you call them can easily be tanks or main healers.
You people realize that tanks ARE, in essence, just DPS classes right? The only thing that differs for them is that they are DPS classes who can take a hit without dying. Their primary goal is to smack things around though, which is the exact same as a DPS.
"But Velox, a tank's primary goal is to hold hate on things."
Yes, but how does a tank do this? By hitting things with skills! OMG THE SAME AS A DPS.
Really the only role that is fundamentally different is healer because a healer's primary focus is on the party. The rest of the party focuses on enemies regardless of "role."
DPS needs a sword, let them have SAM...
Just give me a mage-tank.

As long as I can get Auron glamour they can make Samurai a healer for all I care.
This is silly. Yes, if you zoom out far enough literally any two jobs are the same. After all, doesn't every class press skills to make it through a dungeon? You're also ignoring self-buffs, heals, non/low-damage aggro generation and unique things like Holmgang or Cover. SE just giving up on tanking entirely and saying "Y'know what, we just want you to be blue dps for endgame" is relatively new.
