I am currently a (201) BLM. My spell speed is around 656. Yet I'm hearing some BLM Spell speed are around 800. Is mine really low? Would 800 mean that much more DPS for me? Finally, how could I enhance my spell speed? Thank you for your time. :)

I'm 196 slowly getting my way up there and my Spell Speed is only 601. You sure they aren't somehow using Food to get up to that 800 level? Seems like a stretch. Is there even a gear setup that allows 800 Spellspeed to happen?
I'm not a BLM, but playing with the gear calculator gives me this: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/S4MU
That's 793 using drops up to A2S and Thordan Extreme, as well as food, but if I included Diadem gear I could get it much higher.
Thanks for replying. I was wondering the same thing. But now that I think about it they might have really good Diadem bonuses. I just asked as my spellspeed is 635, my attack magic potency is 1012, and my critical hit rate is 629. Are these numbers sufficient for Thordan extreme or A1 & A2 savage?
Ah hah so it's a mix and match of top of the line gear that gets you up there.
-------------------------
Haven't run Savage at all so I dunno how I would do. Thordan Ex is very mechanic driven and if the whole party knows mechanics then you could probably get it done. That said I never cleared that either. If you are already i200 I'd say you are probably okay as the stats to get near 800 spell speed require gear from Savage and Thordan Ex.
I agree, as I have seen some vids. The true challenge is finding a party that is tolerant enough to stick it out and not give up aka rage quit after 2 or 3 losses due to mistakes, from which people have to make to learn.
"A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new." --Albert Einstein
That's a problem I usually find with any content and any new current content. People keep hoping for a swift clear and get mad when they don't get carried. It's either you get a group that has the capacity to learn, get in a FC and do the same thing or just not do any content. It can get really taxing mentally. I mean on my server 1 day after Thordan Ex was released we already had PF groups giving people the Know fight or get kicked treatment.
Will say though that that Ring of Death thing on Thordan Ex is dumb. I keep running into it. Ha ha.
It's the same on my server. I'm also trying to get Thordan EX down. But lately, I've noticed a lot of people coming in with parsers to not help DPS, but to shame them and discourage them from playing. I can only hope I run into a party that all have Skype or TS to have somewhat of a chance. Or like you said, wait for people of my FC to catch up, so we can all do it together. As for Ring of Death...yeah I feel your pain man lol.
Ideally 700+ would for sure be better, 656 does seem rather low.
My ss is 764 or something close to it if i recall.
I'm honestly not aware of any Spell Speed breakpoints for Black Mage, where their rotation falls apart beneath a certain amount. And even if it does "fall apart" you'll be missing at absolute worst 1 Fire IV per Enochian rotation, which isn't gonna impact your dps substantially if you maintain Enoch, manage cooldowns, and maintain a general semblance of the base rotation.
I highly doubt you *need* a specific Spell Speed value to do any given content. Secondaries are all fluff beyond a certain point, they just give more deeps.
With a lot of work into a diadem set to cover any pieces without max spell speed already the max is over 1k. Calculated 1088 crit on brd max with their weapon having 71 crit, so 1017 spell speed + weapon, and the lowest speed on a 200+ weapon for blm is 71, so you're lookin at 1100 with i200 eso weapon.
Unrealistic, but it certainly means 800 is doable.
Hmm, this is interesting. At the moment, as I have asked some people in game and they said my gear stats seem to be fine. Although they had also mention that buffing spell speed as a BLM isn't a bad idea but it also isn't a requirement, much like you have stated. Which brings me to another question. I have seen many variations to a BLM rotation. Which ones do you find most effective? Also I think I suffer from latency as when ever I try to cast raging strikes, and my pot. It seems to take really long for them both to come in. Would anyone have any suggestions for this. Much thanks appreciated.
I'm at 693 SS with 208 gear. I feel sad now.
Time to grind some dinos then!

I wouldn't be surprised at some of the quotes I've seen here. Last night I saw a monk sitting by the MB who had all left side i210 diadem gear. 4 pieces with 5 total stats, 1 with 4, and 1 with 3. It was crazy.
Spell speed helps you be able to get out more Fire IV's with Enochian up, which can actually be a pretty big increase over the length of a fight. It's definitely worth while to get your spell speed up to about 700. More is always awesome, but 700 puts you in a good place to keep things going and it also helps you have time to make adjustments for moving without losing your buffs.
As for rotations, there's plenty of them out there depending on your playstyle. My personal playstyle enjoys the guides made by Aikaal, which you can search for to check out if you like.
tbh Spell Speed> Other stats like crit, det, and acc
Spell Speed is not fluff, lol
It's fluff in the sense that, while it's better than Crit and Det for BLM, that "better" is an almost inconsequential percentage. Having not really dug too deep into BLM endgame yet, I'm sure there's breakpoints where you gain +1 F4 in your 25 or 20s Enochian that becomes a decent dps gain in the long run, for sure, but between breakpoints, extra SS is just fluff that gives you more opportunity and more breathing room on Blizz 4 casts.
Hence: Fluff. Since it's easily beaten out by boosting your INT score.
Essentially: would you rather use an i200 crit/ss piece, or an i210 crit/det piece, assuming you still reach the required ss for your current rotation with the latter? If you choose the 210 piece, you're agreeing that ss is fluff.
What if I chose Diadem gear that gives me Crit/SpS/Det?
Btw question. How much Spell Speed would I need to have Fire 4 achieve a cast time of 2.5 seconds? Inquiring minds want to know.
Yeah, SPD on BLM gives a very nice return. Especially when you consider being in Astral reduces Ice Spell cast times and Umbral reducing Fire Spell cast times.
It's basically 66 SPD is a 1% reduction in cast time/recast time, but because SPD gives exponential gains it's even better than it appears because the more SPD you get the better it becomes.
Look at Blackcat's values.
Fire 2.27 from 2.5 = 9% Reduction in Cast/Recast.
But over 60 seconds look at F1 -> 26.43 casts per minute from 24 casts per minute -> 10% increase in attacks.
----------------------------------------
Get that value near a 2s Cast/Recast (20% Reduction in Cast/Recast or 1674 Spell Speed) and you have a 25% increase in casts with only a 20% reduction in Cast/Recast
30 Casts/min VS 24 Casts/min.
This changes with the addition of F4 as it's a 3 Second cast time, but the principle is the same over the period of the fight.
Do also remember that SS has exponential gains. While a gain of X SS will always reduce your cast times by 0.1s, regardless of what you're sitting on at now, going from 2.4s to 2.3s cast is a higher DPS increase than going from 2.5s to 2.4s cast.
Isnt it capped at a 10% reduction though?
Has anyone gotten their gcd down BELOW 2.25s?
I don't worry about GCD recast time. Before the spell being cast completes it's cast time you can cast another spell already.
That would require about 1023 SS total, or a gear set that looks about like this: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/S5S4
Royal Road Arrow cards are my favorite. :o
Yes, there is no hard cap to the gcd reduction, but last I heard, the maximum reduction you can obtain from Speed alone is 10%, so 2.25s base GCD.
All other effects are added after that. Would still be difficult to test as you'd need over 1k spell speed with food but no buffs.
It's probably more a 'you cannot get more of this with current gear' than anything else.
I think it's roughly 72 SS per 1% haste, so to get 10% you need ~720 spell speed from gear; That puts us roughly at needing 1060, which even with Diadem and food, probably isn't reachable at this time.
You can hit 1172 with Diadem gear: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/S66Q
And besides, you only need to hit 1023 total for a 2.25 GCD, which I linked, like, 5 posts ago.
