Hey there! So... I've been spending the downtime before 3.1 doing my Big Fishing. Aaaaand... even with double the former maximum amount of Gathering and Perception one could have pre-3.0, I still find myself seeing countless Big Fish get away.
Could there be a possibility of improving the catch rates for these fish based on modern 3.0 stats? Thanks!
NOTE: I am not saying to improve the hooking rate of these fish. Just make them easier to catch when they ARE hooked. =D

Yeah, it is super frustrating!
I mean, I don't mind if it takes forever for a big fish to bite, but when it does bite, I want my current stats to give me a considerably higher shot at a fish.
Like... case and point, there is an infamous fish known as a Cupfish. Really ugly little thing. It only comes out 5PM-7PM Eorzea Time and it has a really low chance of being hooked and a really low chance of being caught. It's really annoying to catch. I've hooked it maybe... 6 times so far? And despite having 550 Gathering on my Fisher, it just goes away like nothing. -

(without our gp buffs) Also id like it if they either increased the windows for the level 60 aetherial reduction fish or made it so tupuxuara and the Thaliak caiman were on different fishing windows and I could lower the purity on the ones I managed to catch. SO much useless Seaborne Aethersand when all I want is the clusters. Botany/Mining are easier to spam clusters since you can force 2 purity every time, but with fishing its a crap shoot and our windows for the level 60 ones are only 4 game hours a day with both the ice/water reducible fish sharing a spot.

I prefer that being a higher level Fisher should give you a more higher dang chance to catch more elusive from pre-HW at least. I don't have a lot time in the world and I have errands to run and jobs to do so I can't sit around all the time waiting to catch one fish due to weather, time windows, and mooching at times.
This is not fun, I mean I don't plan to catch ALL fishes, but for the ones that are needed for some Quests... make them more manageable to snag. Seriously I dislike how Fisher is the "weakest" DoL class in the game and how often it fails where MIN and BTN are more relaxing and more fun to use than Fisher. -

I do love the new FSH skills no doubt, they're awesome (though I think Patience II is a little worthless... I mean 80% chance of HQ fish but 75% chance of rod not being as effective? Heck it's already a pain to snag some fish and the GP to use the skills to debunk the effective take too long to restore and you have a short window to use Patience and Patience II so Patience I is by far the best one to use) though I am confused about the difference between Powerful Hookset and Precise Hookset, only one cost more than the other and the description of the skills doesn't really explain the merit of using on over the other except it doesn't affect certain fishes.

The good and bad thing about fishing is that mostly dependent on RNG. It would be really boring and bad implemented if were allways sucess on everything, it then will loose all worth of be fisher.
If you dont like the RNG of the fish then do other things and let us enjoy to we that love the sick and wicked RNG ;)
ALSO the quests where u give those rare and legendary big fish are completely optionals, you dont need do them to advance as fisher, so you only will get achievement when you do them, or rod. -

Have you tried using the skills you learned in 3.0? The new skills should help you catch the big fish easier. However, if it seems like the skills aren't helping, please give us detailed feedback with information such as which big fish you were trying to catch, which bait you were using, during what conditions (weather/time), and the skills used when trying to catch the big fish.

Well i havent noticed much diference rather than better hq land mooching. But its just fine as it is, since being better in the job doesnt mean the fish will be dumber :p
So by sample nepto is not hard to get, just normal catching until get buff (or at least using patience1 and cordials just to keep enough gp for when get buff), then use patience2 while buff is active and chances to get it seems fair. i had caught 4 of 6 neptos that bite then get bored and went other spot. -
11-06-2015, 10:17 AMVirusChrisI have been using the 3.0 skills along with my Gathering stat at 494 and Perception stat at 444 and I still unable to caught the Titanic Sawfish even when I have all the conditions met and right bait and double mooch, not only do I land a Silver Shark way too often when I DO manage to snag the big fish I get the message "It got away..." which is asinining at times. I kinda wanted to finish the Optional Quests to clear all my quests and possible caught some of the big fish for now... but the way you catch fish even with the new skills and higher stats means nothing when there's a "gathering cap" the prevents you from getting the fish even if you're gear the best.Quote:

The thing about the Titanic Sawfish is that it is not a Big Fish. You should not have any trouble reeling it in when it does bite, even with 2.0 stats. I rarely ever saw it get away once I had the full i55 HQ set, even back in the days when it was the biggest baddest fish around. If it is constantly "...getting away" you are either trying to reel in the Pirate's Bane (check your buffs a the top of the screen to see if Fisher's Intuition has activated), or you are using the Patience buffs without using Powerful Hookset to reel it in. Patience and Patience II give you a rather hefty penalty to your catch rate that makes catching anything without using the hooksets pretty unmanageable.

I don't use Patience I or II sometimes and even still I get the message "it got away" regardless on which fish I snag and I never catch it because of the damn Silver Shark always biting. I wasted over 200 bait and still nothing to get... there's a bloody cap and even if you have 3.0 stat you will NOT get the fish 100% of time even little ones. I do use the Hookset when using Patience but I will get the message "it got away" though most likely when I don't have enough GP to use the Hookset.
Plus I've managed to capture two Pirate's Bane fishes already, just the Titantic Sawfish that refuses to be nabbed by me. I got the Navigator's Brand though, but Titanic Sawfish... nope. I hate the double mooching, at least increase the percent a bit that you're most likely to get the "rarer" fish from double mooching seeing as the Silver Shark can still get snag from either mooching. -

The system could stand to be more transparent like the other DoL, especially with the addition of soft-capped rates. eg. legendary nodes cap at 85% regardless of Gathering stat. There's no way to discern this rate as FSH, so the compulsion is to stack Gathering stat to the sky only to find the same lv.59 fish are getting away.
This is even worse for big/legendary fish, which clearly have a gathering penalty on top of the normal gathering rate cap. While Patience II relieves the penalty (Catch and Release), the normal gathering rate cap remains in effect so the player has no point of reference for it's efficacy. At least on MIN, you can see the legendary node go from 85% to 100% when you use a +% skill.
If we're in the mood for suggestions, I recommend re-purposing Fish Eyes to do something in the same vein as the other DoL +% skills. Pay a GP cost to remove the soft cap or add a fixed +% Gathering. -

Has anybody else ever tried lowering your stats, there was a big fish in churning mists and Azla Lia where I always missed, i lowered my gathering from 525, to 470 by switching rods and boom caught 3 consecutive at each hole. Maybe theres a built in debuff if you have too much stats?

Considering fishing is largely just for the fun of the challenge, I don't really see the point of it at all if the challenge is removed. As Tint said, it just makes the achievement that more worthwhile when you finally get there.
I actually had more difficulty waiting for the correct weather conditions (those fish where it is one weather pattern directly after another).
