Best to keep your expectations low.
I'd rather assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised than expect the best and be disappointed
"Or I quit!"
Yeah I have high hopes too. But I slap my self and redirect my excitement into indifference so SE can't let me down again.
While it's normally best to keep expectations low, with being told 3 months at first and now pushing 5 months until we see it released, I agree that it needs to be great. There's pretty much no excuse for it to be otherwise.
Im expecting.
-Boring ass 50 minutes log drama inducing raid.
-Terribly unplayable lord of vermillion that will need maintenances, several hot-fixes and will be a grindfest (as anything in this game tbh).
-Green gatherer/crafter scrips for even more fun. New moonstones II and impossible to make needing gazillions in gear and totally omnicrafting dependant specialist actions that will make the few standing crafters leave.
-More booring, repetitive, coma inducing beast tribe quests dependent on FATE spawn.
-More relic, thats bad enough as it is.
Time lockouts, grind, weekly caps, grind, RNG, RNG, and spice it up with some grind.
Unless the Relic quest takes, at it's absolute fastest 16 weeks to complete, expect to be disappointed.
Yup yup, I always held my expectations as low as possible, but not this time.
This time the patch better be epic and groundbreaking. :D
Till November I will have to do a lot of filler stuff to keep myself playing.
I expect, that no matter what, there will be, "OMG WHY YOU DO DIS SE??" threads no matter what is/isn't in 3.1.
Expecting anything sets you up for disappointment if it doesn't come to fruition. I prefer to just enjoy the game as it is, and be pleasantly surprised if new patch adds stuff I like. If new patch isn't that great for my tastes, I still can enjoy what was there before.
People are gonna piss and moan no matter what-
I want my GC Promotions...
Why? He's not exactly wrong. Some of the design decisions that have went into FFXIV's added content have been pretty bad. Not liking raids and relic notwithstanding, he just cherry-picked all the bad decisions that are likely to be seen in large content patches based on FFXIV's content patch history: broken and overly grindy minigames, crafting and gathering grind (they seem insistent on keeping the scrip system, after all), daily quests involving FATEs making us wait and twiddle our thumbs until they spawn.
By no means am I sick of the game, but I'm also not blind to its blatant flaws. The grind in FFXIV is real. A little too real. And RNG doesn't help make the grind feel any better.
I don't expect anything and I'm still let down.
Go go, 3.1.
Right now I am working on grinding my crafters to 60 before 3.1. Unless 3.1 blows my socks off I am going to lower my sub to $12.99 and just do the weekly. I have had enough of the grind in this game and there are way too many games coming out for me to grind my life away in 1 game!
P.S. as it is now 50~60 crafting is a stupid grind, I am spending 1000x time more gathering then I am crafting. And crafting is my favorite pastime in this game.
I'm excited for 3.1 but not totally convinced. If Void ark drops esoteric upgrade items, I'm not sure how the narrative is going to change at all. Will there be any point doing anything besides expert roullette and void ark? Will ppl even care about relic weapons and Airship exploration if max level gear comes from Void ark?
I really hope this is something the developers are thinking about before they actually launch 3.1, otherwise we going to be in the same boat we are in now. Except replacing Alex Normal with Void Ark.
So, this thread was started basically as,'It'd better be good or...' (as the Stig best puts it):

Bravo, bravo.
If Void Ark's drops are 210, we'd have 4 sets at that ilevel, which fits with all the demands for horizontal progression. If it's above, there's no point in airship exploration giving 210 and Void Ark giving esoteric upgrades. I'll eat my phone if it's not 200 or 210.
What I expect during 3.1 :
RNG
RNG
RNG
RNG
and.... RNG.
I dont mind grind for gear progression.
But grind for side activities such as chocobo racing?
ROFL.
And honestly, no, GW2 is making quite fine and isn`t a grindfest (tho, dat legendaries), and there are a lot more examples coming from the east. That you are used to something doesn`t mind it cant be the other way or that is better. There is no need to have grind in literally every single piece of content they release. Or some form of RNG on absolutely everything. Im not telling XIV needs to become a carebear game where everything is granted day 1, like, gimme gimme. But seriously needs to tone the grind down quite a bit. Is actually, hurting the game more than helping to its logevity. As a testament to this, the ammount of dead content is staggering, and probably, reducing the grind on it, would help a lot...
You will need to grind airship exploration for relic weapons lol
Ending up killing content with the past of time, all of em do eventually. Eventually.
You are thinking in absolutes, its either vertical or horizontal, grind or grindless, months of work or handed down with 1 button press. I can`t think of a vertical progression game that doesn`t suffer from dead content. BUT SURELY I can think of way too many vertical progression games that manage to keep old content alive WAY longer and give them a more honorable death, too many to even list them, basically, almost all the market does this better than XIV... Vertical Progression isn`t a bad thing. Excesive ammounts of it are.
Persuing that stat edge needs to be something that needs work and dedication. Getting that glamour or leveling that Chocobo... Not so much.
I want people to grind garuda, ifrit and titan ex again for relic, then the vortex feather's price will be 30k again each instead of 3 mil.
I'd rather that than crappily locking it behind rare desynths and millions of gil honestly, at least I'd be doing new content and not farming gil or whatever. If it's both? Not going to waste my time, I'll wait until the items are dirt cheap and it's been nerfed to hell and back for glamour.
This about sums up majority of what I'm feeling--like someone said earlier, best to keep expectations low, even if it seems a little shameful to expect subpar content from SE. Waiting on a November release when it was announced 3 months after expac release, well it is not hard to imagine that some players have temporarily quit. Another month and a half of grinding Alex is not worth it.
