Partial purchases

One thing that I think might help make more of a competitive marketplace and be an ease to buyers and sellers alike would be an option where a player can sell a stack of items and have players buy a quantity from that stack, without having to buy the stack outright and resell the excess.

So for instance, I have 96 fleece that I'm trying to sell, and usually, if I wanted that stack to sell fast, I'd have to divide it up into groups of 12 or 24 (to keep with woolen yarn's 2-per-1 recipe) at the same selling price. However, this leaves me with the problem that I'm clogging up my retainer's sell screen with 4-8 "stacks" of fleece to sell, and one retainer can only sell upto 20 "stacks" at one given time.

Now, if I were to set my one stack of 96 to allow other players to purchase parts of it, I'd still be paying any tax percentage for the amount sold, but I wouldn't be losing any money than if I sold all at once, and people can get the amount they need at any one time.

This has been asked before and my opinion if it stays. If I can define different unit price for partial purchase, and whole stack purchase, then it can be quite ok.

Well, I don't see why it couldn't, after all. You'd still be telling the system what price you want, all it is in effect is a tick box option to allow the stack to be split between multiple buyers. That way you can chuck up a stack to sell as a stack and another stack to be sold piecemeal.

This comes up all the time. And players don't seem to understand. I even made a retainer "Bulk Rate Discounts" to help explain it. If I put up 50 of an item for 25% less than the going rate... that is the discount offered to the player for buying in bulk. Otherwise, you pay for the convenience of getting exactly what you want.

Too many sellers always sell in huge bulks when I don't even need that many and I rather not have my inventory cluttered in excess junk. One example: I need only two glamour prisms, yet everyone selling them always puts them up in batches of 4 or more.

Pardon me if I've misread into your comment, but I don't see how the suggestion is disadvantageous to your bulk selling methods. If you'd like to sell in bulk to people, you could simply choose for the stack you place onto the market not to be split, and offer your discount accordingly. On the other hand, if you'd like people to have the choice to purchase the exact amount of items they need, you can choose your price and not offer a discount like you would for your bulk buys.

This way, it's a win-win situation for everyone, and offers the game some enhanced convenience to the market board.

You want a disadvantage to your suggestion?

Player A makes the first listing: Lists 99 fleece at 500gil each
Player B comes along later on and: Lists 99 fleece at 450gil each
Player C comes along after B: Lists 99 fleece at 400gil each
Player D: Wants to list 16 fleece they are now forced to list at or under 400 gil with your system even if they match price they are now bottom priority because they have less stock because people avoid multiple purchases.

People will buy from player C and probably B before D with your system because its more cost effective for the buyer in terms gil amount of clicks and time. Even if we assume no one lists under "400gil" because its a loss not a profit you are still making the market only ever list large stacks of items and those with the most stock will be the ones to get the sales. With your system I could go list 15,840 fleece over my 8 retainers at stacks of 99 at the minimum price and lock down the whole market and there wouldn't be anything you could do but relist at a loss or be lost in the sea of my listings but I'd still win in the long run because I have more stock and you made no profit. Where as currently you could come in at stacks of say 32 and charge around the same amount or more and get more sales than me because most people don't want 99 fleece.

I only see this driving the profit margins down and only people who sell in bulk will ever get a sale.

Look at Rift's AH system. Make this game have Rift's AH system. Rift's AH system is perfection. For buyers AND sellers.

Well ya, of course having nearly 160 stacks of 99 would crash the market, current system or buy from stack system. Doesnt matter what item youre selling, having 16000 items of anything will make the price go to zero.

There is nothing wrong with a market listing that looks like:
Adamantite Nugget x50 15000 each
Adamantite Nugget x50 15000 each
Adamantite Nugget x50 15000 each
Adamantite Nugget x50 15000 each
Adamantite Nugget x1 30000

You want 1? You pay extra. That market slot has an opportunity cost. Technically, you are paying less. At that time, either shell out 750k so you can relist the other 49 yourself... or you pay only 30k and get exactly what you need.
