I've been trying out evasion gear, though I solo a lot, I'm not sure how we do yet tanking in evasion gear, hoping to hear some feedback if anyone has tanked anything of significance yet?
I'm in DD oriented gear now but all non dated this is my current set up:
Cobalt Claws: Attack +8
Silver Tricorne: STR +3, Dex +3
Raptorskin Harness (Blue): Acc +4, Dex +6, Mind +5
Peisteskin Hunting Belt: HP +8 Vit +2, Int+2
Fingerless Raptorskin Gloves (White): Attack +4 Magical Evasion +10
Felt Trousers (Red) HP +23 Str+4 Vit +6
Cobalt-Plated Jackboots (Red) Dex +3 Acc +3
Penance is better for waist imo (HP-10 STR+2 VIT-1 Eva+2 Magic Evasion +1). Granted, its an R/E drop off Phaia (he's easymode now) so it can't have materia slotted to it yet. But if we're factoring in materia then any-ol-belt will do.
For legs this is a matter of personal preference but I like Raptorskin Subligar (Black) [DEX+5 VIT+4 Evasion+12] Over the felt trousers. STR may increase attack power but DEX increases crit hit rate and I plan on abusing Critical Attack Power+ materia for Blindside II+Follow Through and Victimize II
I factor in Materia because I use Materia only high tier III and IV (My Body has a maxed out Critical Attack Power+50) I don't see the dex increasing the crit rate much nor do I feel str increases dmg much, but since theirs no way to pump your crit rate to high amounts now that MI is changed, I would rather max out my damage per crit instead. (Simian Thrash crits often, works great when Victimize II is on cooldown.)
I only did not post Materia because the OP wanted new gear ideas, and at the current time R/E gear just doesnt compete with materia but, I did not want to post things like +50 Critical Attack Power and then cause a misunderstanding
Ah makes sense. It would be interesting to do some research on these new formulas and find out how STR and DEX actually affect gameplay. Im also wonder if weapon skills have any stat modifiers like they did in XI, in that case having particular stat focus could be more beneficial. Speaking of how things work, have you determined how Critical Attack Power+ actually effects crits? As in is it critical damage+X or critical damage+%?
No idea. Simian Thrash crits gain anywhere from like 40-100 damage. Victimize II I posted a Crit on PoP with that materia doing non buffed besides MI doing 2709. On Normal swings though, I seem to notice ~a 20-30 dmg increase on crits against things inside strongholds then before I've put it on.
I'm thinking of either getting Rainmaker's or the Raptorskin Harness. How important is DEX to us? By comparison Rainmaker's has STR+5 and Atk+4 which seems pretty nice for pure damage.
Rainmaker is probably the best body for Pugs to use for pure DPS. I haven't bothered with Ifrit or WNMs since 1.19, but I don't really recall missing inside Stronghold. Now, like I said I haven't tried WNMs or Ifrit nor do I know what # you need to cap acc. But regardless you really can't go wrong with either.
I just made this change today, I cant believe I didnt notice Rainmaker's before!
Its a very good piece of gear and Ill propably main it.
Rainmaker's Tunic is pretty slick. Managed to get the blue version, so I got the Piety bonus on top of the Attack Power. Currently rocking:
Cobalt Claws/Dated Disabling Baghnakhs (trying to Spiritbond the baghnakhs)
Rainmaker's Tunic (blue)
Felt Bracers (blue)
Penance
Felt Kecks + 1 (blue)
Vintage Coif
Engineer's Leggings (haven't got anything better yet)
Cobalt Claws seem the way to go for the most part because of how much damage they have. I still using my Disabling Baghanakhs (broke my other pair into materia) because they seem to proc way more than they did Pre 1.19... so I'm still finding use for them. I have a +16STR materia to attach to them when I find a Blacksmith to do it.
There's Silver Tricorne for the head or Sipahi Turban if you do the strongholds enough to warrant bringing it up. It should be noted that while the Turban does have more STR and -Enmity that it does lack a DEX stat as well as the inability to put materia on it. Not that you can place any STR/DEX/ATK/ materia on the Tricorne anyway from what I've seen.
Raptorskin Harness (Blue) and Rainmaker's Tunic are the two main pieces I've seen currently and they go the Critical Attack Power+ Materia for the slot. The harness has DEX while the Rainmaker's Tunic has STR/ATK. I guess it basically depends on your playstyle. I'm more into Rainmaker's Tunic personally. Sipahi Shirt could be good if you're into tanking because of the +15Evasion/M.Evasion.
Fingerless Raptorskin Gloves (White) actually have +4ATK on them in the base. Toadskin Gloves (Black) are only R30 so I'm not sure where they land in terms of attaching materia to them but they have +STR. I have a +15ATK Materia on the gloves. Sipahi Gloves have +15 Crit Rate so I'm kind of interested to see if the numbers will be visible with that ontop of Murderous Intent. There isn't any Crit Rate% Materia as far as I know so it'd be nice imo.
I still have Penance. I messed around and made a Velveteen Sash (Red) which has +1DEX/2ACC but honestly, I haven't missed on Simian Thrash or Victimize up to this point so I hardly doubt that accuracy is making a difference. So I'm using Penance most of the time. If you don't have it, you can certainly solo it pretty effortlessly.
The leg slot is probably on preference too. You have the Raptorskin Subligar (Black) and the Felt Trousers (Red). I personally use the Raptorskin Subligar (Black) with a +7DEX/VIT (first one I made or I would've done STR/DEX) materia which actually puts the DEX on it fairly high. I've been building around working to deal most of my damage from criticals.
Cobalt Plated Jackboots are a nice addition to the things PGL can wear on their feet. There are also Cobalt-Plated Caligae (Green) which have STR/DEX on them (2/3 Respectively) as well as +7Evasion. I didn't notice this pair when I had my Jackboots >_<
Rings/Earrings don't have upgrades so you're still stuck with dated in that department. I haven't done any extensive testing to know if I'd rather use STR or DEX rings yet... but that'll probably be based the rest of your gear choices in your case.
i still cant make up my mind on which belt to use : Peisteskin Hunting Belt/ Penance / sash or any other?
Peisteskin is nice because you can slot +HP to it if you're worried about your HP pool. You can't slot ATK/STR (or anything "offensive" for that matter) so it's more based on how you wanna play. In all honesty, I should probably look into attaching +HP or MP to a Peisteskin belt specifically for the Ifrit fight.
Penance is still the best in terms of straight damage because of the +2STR though. That hasn't been matched by anything else in that slot for PGL to my knowledge.
Instead of using Raptorskin Fingerless Gloves (White), I tend to use the Sipahi Gloves which give +15 Crit Rate + 10 Magic Evasion :).. Bladedancer boots are still a viable option, not to many good materia to slot into feet (Evasion Mainly)..
My Set-up is as follows:
Cobalt Claws (+30 Str & +8 Att)
Silver Tricorne (No Materia attached as of yet, thinking MP)
Rainmaker's Tunic (Str+5 Att+4 Crit Att Power +44)
Penance or Raptorskin Satchel (+47 MP, Great for extra mp while soloing or for Pummel/Flurry MP costs)
Felt Kecks +1 (+7 Str +7 Dex +5 Vit +4 Piety and I think its +14 Evasion) (Attached Swordsman Cry IV 7~7)
Bladedancers Boots (Dex +3 Acc+3 Evasion +12~I think)
Sipahi Gloves (+15 Crit Rate +10 Mag. Evasion ~ only downfall is that you cant attach Materia)
Accessories would be X2 +7 Dex Rings or X2 +7 Str Rings + Mythril Choker
Gloves are the one thing that may be an option to change, I wouldn'd mind aiming for Raptorskin Gloves w/
two Tier III Att Pwr+ Materia or a perfect IV.. which would make the Raptorskin Gloves = +34 Att power (w/ Perfect IV) but I'm not positive how it stacks up to Crit Rate +15 .. more testing would have to be done.
In strongholds PUG can do some good damage, we just lack really good AoE WS, only one that really comes to mind is Aura Pulse.. which is moot at best.. even fully buffed..
I agree that we can be beasts in strongholds, but have you tried using Seismic Shock II? If you take a second to line it up right (since most of the mobs are cluster****ed in one place anyway) you can hit most of them for good damage. I was doing upwards of 450 per mob with SS 2. Can even sneak in Blindside II if you get behind them.
I never thought of Seismic Shock II, just sucks that the move requires MP for usage.. PUG is like LNC.. straight up beast on Solo targets.. Fully buffed Victimize II can unleash some great damage.. Ill have to try out SS II next time I'm allowed to be PUG (Have 50 Con/Thm so always main healing hahaha).
@Bigcat.. Do you know if Earth Magic Potency has any effect on SS II?? since PUG can attach Earth Mag. Potency to weapons.. (like 90% positive on that :P lol)
I never thought of SS II either until I was in a stronghold PT with a LNC and MRD wreaking AOE havoc lol. I haven't done any testing regarding earth magic potency since I just hit 50 (yay) and am now starting to work on my gear, but I will give it a shot. Also, do you use Murderous Intent? I didn't know if it was worth it since they increased the cooldown so much.
I haven't really used Murderous Intent much, a CD of 180 secs just sucks :(.. but might be viable to use if you could afford the bar slot for it.. and Congrats on 50 :) PUG was my first 50 :).. cannot wait for Monk hahaha... I need LNC 42+ for Invig II and Ferocity II >< its only at 21 sadly.. and MRD is my next 50 to get sooo... no Lancer for a while :(
Ill have to test Earth Magic Potency, should be somewhat easy I imagine lol.. just finding Earth Materia III/IV is the hard part lol
honestly imo, pugilist gear is currently probably incomplete, but going by what they have now, the suggestions are decent.
Its mostly going to come down to materia, but even with as much defense as you can slot, youll probably be -90 defense from a a lancer. Far as Evasion, they dont have a high level version of the shirt, and a lot of the peices that boosted evasion are no longer boosting evasion unless you go dated. no evasion belts, hands, etc.
PUG Can be geared for many situations, the suggestions we have been giving are strictly from dd perspectives.. you can get a very high HP pool on PUG, Materia makes several builds maxing or mix/matching.. whatever your playstyle is needed or what your group needs..
PUG's Materia can be HP, Def+, Eva+,+MP, +Enmity.. You have to specialize in the type of materia your playstyle will fit, currently MRDs tank everything due to pre much everything being AoEable.. and pre much need AoE to clear large groups of mobs quickly.. as far as LNC or MRD having more defense, might need some Def+ to make up for the fact that we wear light armor compared to there heavy armor.. would definately need certain MRD and GLD Skills to be a truly effective tank tho :(..
But ya I do not think PUG is ready for a Main tank role yet, altho it is possible w/ certain skills and Materia, but obviously everyone isn't going to have access to everything.. I plan on making a Tank Build (HP+ and Eva+) and ill see how that goes on the Stronghold nms etc
Don't believe we'll be considered a tanking class from here on out, at least not by the Dev team. If I'm not very much mistaken, the +Enmity gear won't socket to our weapons, but will to GLA and MRD weapons. If nothing else, it's a rather heavy implication that we're not tanks anymore.
That's why they gave us taunt, it allows us to have guaranteed hate for a small period of time to get our counter skills off. Battles don't really last too long anyway for us to make use of evasion skills in a group, but if you're interested in it you could grab war drum, pop presence of mind, deck yourself in evasion gear and see what happens lol. Unless they give MNK some hate tools, they're sending a clear message about our future as a class/job.
Besides, our high evasion and gear choices doesn't necessarily point towards tanking, SOMEONE has to have high evasion ;)
Dunno, just don't agree - it would be far too coincidental. It would be pointless to have all these evasion attacks to use them only once in a blue moon when you can steal hate for a second with a taunt. Never mind the fact it would screw so very much up in the cohesion of the fight. I am speaking of longer fights (NM, Ogre, Ifrit, etc), btw.
That said it could just be in my head because I enjoyed tanking on pug. I still think its meant to be a quasi tank class - or should I say hope?
I'd love for us to be a viable tank, but who knows what the new dev team has in mind for us. It's pretty clear that the old dev team wanted us to be a viable tank somehow, but with the new direction, who knows? They certainly didn't give us much means of gathering hate, hell, even GLA can't hold hate against many mobs. I don't think we'll really know what to do as far as gear and specialization until all of the combat and class/job changes culminate.
I personally am VERY happy Pugilists are going the DD route, as my dislike for being a low DPS tank is the main reason I switched from Gladiator to Pugilist as my main class.
this is an issue, no matter how you slice it, countering is a part of monk, and yet if we never get hate how do we counter? taunt is decent, but lets be honest its on a 45 second cool down.
Uhhhh its not really coming together as well as before, our defense is comparitively a lot lower than before, and our evasion hasnt gone up. All the evasion gear we can get, can be used by virtyally every other class, so, we re not really more evasive, except for 8 out every 30 seconds. Anyhow, i noticed when partied with a lnc, they were able to take dmg just as well, with pure defense, The sad part, is i think pugilist tanking, is probably its best DD, if its an evasion build that is. haymaker is sick.
Ok so I got 2 good pairs of Cobalt claws.
The first one is a Cobalt Claw +1 and it's melded with 2 materia, +15 STR and +16 Dex.
The second pair is NQ but it's melded with 3 materia (all +STR ones) for a total of +25 STR.
So the differences between them is that the HQ one offers +4 damage (from HQ) and +16 DEX over the +10 STR that I got from the NQ one.
I tried to parse them today but I didnt had enough time at my disposal and decided to stop parsing at 500 hits per weapon.
I didn't test weaponskills (only normal auto attack hits) and the testing subjects where all 50 level Amaljaa and these are the results:
HQ = 500 hits, 79 miss, [41897dmg], 86,33% ACC, 71 lowest, 115 highest, 83,96 average
NQ = 500 hits, 107 miss, [42277dmg], 82,34% ACC, 70 lowest, 123 highest, 84,71 average
Ifrit = 500 Hits, 103 miss, [48776dmg], 82,92% ACC, 84 lowest, 136 highest, 98,03 average
So at 500 hits we can see that the average results are about the same but:
+16 DEX resulted into 26 less missed hits.
+10 STR resulted into better total damage than the +4 damage stat I got from HQ
I will test some more but from what I see, at the present state of FFXIV STR materias are the best choice for Pugilist weapon, as long as you can manage more than +25 STR on them :P
I know it's not much and I dont add anything new to our knowledge, but I wanted to share this and hear your oppinions on the subject.
P.S: If I try to add a third tier IV STR materia on the HQ or a fourth tier IV on the NQ the chances of success are the same (10%)
EDIT: Ifrit's Claws beat all lol....
Maybe not much in the big scheme of things but I appreciate your efforts, Meleena. Good work.
Our job forum seems to be the most cordial. I like that. :)
