All through the Scholar quests, I dealt with the awkwardness of healing Alka Zolka. The lalafell in Tam-Tara Hard had to be carefully babysat when the content was new. But now with the advent of the Aery, I just can't stay quiet anymore. Estinian takes dumptrucks of damage right out the gate, and I play on PS4, so I have to use the unwieldy touch pad to click on him and use all my biggest heals hopefully in time not to wipe.
If it were just a matter of targeting, it would be one thing, but it's not just that. Eos won't heal NPCs unless I order her to every single embrace. For that matter, my only regen won't even touch them. It's so frustrating and mind-boggling as to why in the world they can't just throw these jerks into my party so it's not hideously inconvenient to stop them from dying. Is there any good justifiable reason for this?
P.S.: I don't wanna hear any "git gud scrub"s. Challenge in the mechanics are valid. Challenge in the interface is not.

Sorry if this sounds like a "Git Gud" post, it isnt intended. There is a challenge in how to make the interface work the way you want. Esti--Einstein really isn't too tough to heal, I haven't seen him die personally, having levelled 2 healers and a tank (and gone back in to help others). Wipes in that fight always seem to be because either
a)DPS aren't breaking the healer out of the glowy tower of doomness
or b) DPS didn't get the adds down in time for Einstein to shield us all from the bosses AoE.
I have full-on forgotten about Einstein for periods and then panicked, turned to him and realized he was barely hurt. The only time his damage is noteworthy is during the adds phase, and I haven't done this as SCH but I found that DPS-ing was more practical than healing him (when he was at a safe HP) as WHM and AST. Admittedly when he's already low he can be difficult to pick back up, so I don't let him get low (the SCH speciality), so this tells me your issue really is with targeting. I'd recommend taking a look at your settings and figuring out a way to make it work for you, I personally use targeting filters. Im on PS4 too with controller and it can sometimes be pain, however what you need to do to make things easier is to adjust L1 + square,triangle,circle,x targeting, and by clicling each combination what you get to target. I got L1 + circle as only enemies and i use this mostly, when there is NPC i have L1 + X, and that one stands only for NPC's, summons and objects and stuff like that. I had one for alliance members as well for frontlines when i used to play. You can find all those on targetting in options.
Im just saying this because i think targeting with touchpad IS NIGHTMARE :/ -

It sounds like your group DPS being low is the biggest issue. Estinien barely takes damage if things die in a timely manner.
Nothing wrong with asking for a QoL fix; just noting that the NPC's HP bar shouldn't be creating this much difficulty unless A) you're not Stoneskinning him and B) your party does very low DPS. -

Target Estinien for heals during add phase and use AoE for the party. I play a SCH on PS4 with default targeting and it isn't as difficult as you make it out to be by sheathing your weapon with L3 while then manually targeting him. Your best bet if interface is truly your biggest issue, you can change your target filters to add NPCs under character configuration to be able to target with the left or right directional pad with your weapon drawn. I haven't touched this so I dunno which one to tell you to enable.

I don't have it open now so going by memory, but the way I have mine set is L2 plus R1 cycles targets you are facing to right right, and R2 plus L1 cycles to the left. That's the main way I select enemy targets. Can also hold down L1 and press up and down on the d-pad to select enemies in the enemy list, moving up and down from whatever one you are on currently. Then I have it so that up and down on the d-pad cycles the party which is my main way of healing. If I'm targeting the boss and attacking it, I just hit up or down to select the target, and then cast on them, or hit X to select them and then cast. I then have it set so that left and right on the d-pad cycles the party/alliance/npc as this is the main way I'd target him in this battle, or target other players if I need to heal them like in the solo quests.

I personally always keep important NPCs as a focus target.
I can also second the hint about Stoneskin. There's so many situations where it really feels like cheating to throw it on an NPC and laugh while they take no damage for at least the next minute. -

First off, I totally agree with you OP. But having just leveled my PLD, I noticed the tank has a big effect on how much damage Estinien takes. A lot of DF tanks don't even try to tank the tankable adds or aim the fire breath away from him. The big add's fire breath actually hit Estinien pretty hard and is totally avoidable if the tank picks him immediately and is in the right position.

They rush for Estinien and it takes a couple of enmity aoes to get them back on the tank...by that time the dmg to Estinien is done or the adds are about dead. I can't remember if it was the drake group or the wyverns that are just dead set on focusing Estinien. The 2 dragons are easily taken off him, though.Quote:

Wyvern is tankable and usually the drake group pops by the time the other first add dies so it frequently stays up for a good amount of time. The first dragon is the one of main concern. I find it usually gets off 2-3 fire breaths while it's up, all of which can be aimed away.

Scholar is a hard to play class, you have to control your pet.
If you can't do that I don't recommend playing a scholar, WHM or AST is better of a class for you. -

I know it's a bit late to chime in, and this may have been stated before, but as for targeting him with the touchpad, there are MUCH better ways you can do that. I'm a PS4 player myself. All you have to do is set it up so that NPCs are targetable with the D-pad while your weapon is drawn. If you don't want this to be constant, (due to the annoyances in FATEs at times), you can set up to four options, (not counting your default "weapon-drawn" and "weapon-sheathed" options), that use a combination of L1 + X/Square/Triangle/O to switch your targeting preferences on the fly. For me personally, I have it set up so that my L1+X is healing, where my d-pad targeting ignores enemies but will target NPCs, pets, non-party PCs, and chocobos, my L1+Square is the basic "enemies" targeting, my L1+Triangle is the "all" targeting, and my L1+O is NPCs and objects only, for when I'm in crowded areas.....
Also, I would recommend NEVER having Party members on the targeting option for d-pad, as unless I'm mistaken it only affects the left and right d-pad targeting, whereas the up and down d-pad targeting will always switch between party members in order of how they appear in your party list..... -

I play on PS4 as well. I once had the same exp when doing fate. There's this tank (who's not in my pty) tanking the mobs. I noticed his health was nearly empty, so I tried scrolling through targets but I couldn't somehow target him, and I watched him meet his demise with tears (he tried to run btw, rip). That's when I decided to search the net and finally found that L1+square/triangle/circle thingie. :)
