Can we scrap this system where we can only gear up one class for many months before gearing alts? Why cant the new tomes be 450 week for each class instead of 1? So say I reach the cap for my main, I can grind my alt/alts to get their caps.

But if there aren't caps, people would gear out in a day and stop subbing.........
For real though Yoshida needs to change.
Why are you in such a hurry to gear up?
Yup, the armory system and the way they set up gearing your character in this game has contradicted itself since 2.0. Doesn't make sense to me either.
I already have i170 on my Alt, I'm not bothered about gearing them up anymore until my main is finished as I don't need any extra gear to clear non raid content. If you get everything at once in this game, your going to run out of things to do, just enjoy having an objective.
Law gear meets the minimum ilevel for all current content and is unrestricted.
Gear that way, and you can play everything with all of your alts. Do people really gear up and play every job in all content? Is this thread just because you want to fashion show all the Job specific gear?
edit: I had Upgraded Law gear meets the minimum ilevel. It does not need to even be upgraded to get you in anywhere.
Only if you assume "can play all jobs" to be the same thing as "can play all jobs and have the same best gear for all of them at the same time". They're both very different things. Nothing has contracted itself unless you throw one into it.
It's not like buying a single piece of Esoterics gear locks you out of the other jobs until you finish. You can play all of your jobs whenever you want to: that's what the system is about. It isn't about being the best geared with everything in the space of a few weeks (that's how MMOs keep you going).
You have to make the decision about which jobs you want to focus on. You can either focus on a single one and pour all your time and resources into that or spread yourself out and gear up several at the same time.
Ya'll need to slow down and think.
Gearing takes a long time, but it is also your primary goal at this point.
Would you rather accomplish this goal in a week and be done with it, or take a long time to do it, and have something to do for a while.
(also think which one is the better business practice.)
Could a system be added where it makes it more alt friendly? Yes.
I'm not in a hurry, I'm a multi-classer and that's the unique thing about this game that keeps me playing, and it's the back-of-the-box feature that was touted so heavily to entice players like me. From the outset of 2.0 and onwards however the actual design has been contradictory in how limited players like myself are in acquiring (and storing!) the gear we'd like to get, and for me at least that causes a decent amount of stress in trying to plan out upgrades.
Ultimately frustrations of players like me are just handwaved and dismissed by comments like this, or by people saying "you don't need it." And that's not wrong, because it's really not required to have BiS all the time to be effective as a player. It is, however, nonetheless annoying to feel artificially limited for 6+ months at a time from getting what you'd like (even just for vanity) because of the low caps and high costs.
I'm not quitting over it anytime soon because I'm still having fun, and I actually like that there's a decent amount of gear variety right now, but I do hope they eventually ease up on their content gating in the future or I can see myself deciding I'm not enjoying the way it's implemented. It's not about "having" to do it, it's about wanting to and enjoying it. I wouldn't be quitting once I had my gear; I'd be moving on to the myriad of other long-term goals I want to accomplish.
Edit: To include, before someone tells me, that yes I know the gear will eventually be available cheaply. I tend to plan my purchases around jobs I play heavily first and vanity second. I don't feel limited in the ability to acquire the gear because eventually the tomestones required rain from the sky and there are plenty of ways to get upgrades. I just sometimes get grumpy about the time restrictions.
The thing is the comments made by "these players" are mostly from people that only have played mmos that have you restricted to one class only. When presented with an mmo like the Final Fantasy's they can't seem to find the logic in having multiple jobs/classes geared up.
So to them if gearing up fast looks to be bad for the game and throw out those comments that if people gear up fast..then there's be nothing to do.. So I doubt that if tomes where restricted to classes, which I believe was thrown around on some threads years ago, will be a big cause for concern of people unsubbing.
Indeed. And as I said, it's not like you're prevented from doing anything due to not having Esoterics gear. My ability to play and my ability to acquire gear and do content I want to isn't severely hampered by this system. I'll get what I want eventually. It'll just be, for me, less fun in the long term for it because of the rather severe time limitations.
I apologize if I come across as kinda harsh on this in my original post. It's a bit of a sore spot heh.
I do think the prices for Eso gear needs cut in half. Not anything else though.
Weell, currently you have Alexander Savage which gives you tokens and a chance for loot
You have the new tomes
You can also get ilvl 190 from alexander easy
There are lots of ways to gear up alts.
I agree a little bit with you about having multiple classes, but this is how the games been always.
Thats why I have 3 characters, so I can, when I have the time, gear them all up, instead of just one job
Yeah, I really need to stop being lazy and level my alt to get around the cap. I don't expect it to change anytime soon with regards to the gear acquisition because as you said it's how it's been, but I hope in the future they can continue to iterate on the system they created with Law. I really like the way the Law gear is laid out, and I'm happy to have that to work with in the meantime at the very least.
What your asking for would make every piece of content that is not named Neverreap or Fractal Continuum even more pointless than it already is. I vote no. The shortage of esoteric gear will encourage people to do Ex primals or alexander normal, and it should be that way. Maybe even Alexander savage (let's be honest tho, this is ffxiv and aint nobody got time fo dat!!!)
OP. It is because you have pets and families to look after.
Personally I wish we could be rid of this end game grind mouse wheel so we can go enjoy other parts of the freaking game. I can't even get the time to do the remaining detective quests and moogle deliveries without being forced into the "oh great, while I do this, I could be earning end game seals to keep up with the community." Do the developers even understand they don't need to put all this grind into end game? They could just as easily make end game have glamours or special dyes while leaving functional armor accessible to people without some kind of portable time space bending machine.
It's like we are all playing Final Fantasy Grind Quest thanks to Alexander + this new AF2 stuff.
Gearing up does nothat take much game time if you don't care to be bis soon as possible. I did not do hunts or 50 runs pet a1-4 for just a 10 I level upgrade. You can do your daily and stay relevant gear wise just 3 to 4 hours a week. It's all how you spend your time.
I do agree that the game in general needs to be more friendly toward those who play multiple (or all) jobs on one character, since that's supposed to be a feature FFXIV has over other MMOs. As it is now, you're actually better of playing more than one character so they have a separate cap, and it would be nice to have them find a system that fixes this to allow FFXIV to play to its unique strengths.
That said, simply having a separate cap for each job comes with its own set of problems. The most obvious being that you would be unable to gear up in advance, or even build tomestones in advance of something. Let's say you have job A at 60 and job B at 58. With the current system you can continue to cap tomestones using job A, then spend them on items for job B, but if the caps were separate you would not be able to use job A for this, even if it was completely geared.
Another, similar issue would be that many people who play multiple jobs, especially those who play all jobs, are smart enough to do their daily roulettes and other farming as a tank or healer for faster queues. In turn this benefits each data center as a whole, because it means more parties forming faster. If those same people had to queue up as other jobs to get tomestones for those jobs specifically, queue times for damage dealers would increase as a result.
Again, I do think more should be done to utilize our unique all-jobs-on-one-character deal, but keep in mind that sometimes simple problems with simple solutions are actually neither.
I do agree it seems weird. Any other game wth just one class at a time, you can level an alt and grind for tokens on that alt regardless of what your main class may have done. For a game that prides itself on its job system, it does seem contradictory.
you could already do like give alex savage to main . af2 to 1st alt, alex normal to other, and the rest on law or augmented ironworks
isnt that what a lot of people do?
450 tomes per class <,<? Some people really have way to much time...!
I cant even cap the current 450 tomes per week!
1000% agree. It's super annoying to only be able to gear one job when one of the biggest premises of the game is that you can do everything on one character.
This problem is made worse by the fact that its job specific (which I actually like - give us more job specific gear! just dont lock it behind a 13 week time gate) and not role specific.
I know it's this way because of people who apparentlyw ill gear out, finish alex savage and unsub. But I think designing the game for these people instead of those who are going to gear up multiple/every job and keep playing is a bad decision, but I'm not in charge.
If you're willing to grind/spend more time you shouldn't have artificial barriers/caps put in the way.
Today I did my dailies and farmed my alex normal tokens and I got to like 430/450 - it's really not hard to cap in a week even if you play significantly less than I did today.
I don't think "id like to gear up my alt job sooner than 3 months from now" is a hurry...
I agree. FF14 system is supposed to be unique in that you effectively have all alts in one. However, this system has very little advantage over the other Normal ones. 1 - Do you save time leveling? Not really, you lose out on all the quest exp and end up Dungeon or Fate grinding instead. It is a bit faster, so ill give it to SE.
2 - You get to share loot between Characters? Sometimes, my DRK and WAR can use the same gear, so can my Scholar and WHM. BUT - for some reason Eso gear is CLASS SPECIFIC....WTF!!
3 - You cannot do any gearing of alts using any ockout or capped mechanics.
In many other MMOs I level my ALT so I have something to do while waiting on raid and tome/mark/etc. caps to reset.
I cannot see why you cannot earn 1 token per floor PER class in ALex.
This would mean u'd need to clear Alex on your ALT. No using your main to clear Alex for Alt loot.
Capping ESO per Class is probably more difficult to implement.
Honestly, I want more job specific gear.
Tired of all my healers wearing the same stuff, meanwhile all the DoW DPS get unique sets.
