But SE has shoved multiple dungeons worth of gear sets, 3 full token/tome/ex weapon sets, 3 new jobs worth of equipment sets, a new raid armor set and new crafted/post 50 wepons and armors. Theres new pvp sets on the way for every job, new crafted gear on the way and another raids worth of gear.
Why is inventory a premium? I'm not trying to carry anything other than what is being offered in the game (not including multiples), and even 2 more retainers wouldn't be enough to hold everything.

There's been quite a number of threads explaining this already which explains that saving the data to the back up servers is roughly 15(?) seconds at the moment in case of rollbacks, crashes, etc (was mentioned in the Liveletter a week or two ago).
Having more inventory/retainers would slow that process and hence they made extra retainers for 'premium' to deter people from possessing too many retainers. -

They sell them because people will pay for them. This is the shady part of the game where these things are sold as optional but retainers give a large advantage with ventures and also the much needed additional storage space. -

I will say though that if you have 8 battleclass retainers at level 60 with the right ilvl you will have an advantage on selling monster drops just because of the low drop rates, but I see this as a good thing for the economy more than a bad thing because easy supply is good when there is clearly a demand due to the low drop rates, but it is still very far from pay to win and venture minions drop much easier now as well.Quote:

If you level 7 alts to level 10, you can get a free 14 retainers. But it's so hard to do that, so it probably won't happen.

No they are not shared but you can send or transfer to your alts crafted items or anything like that. If you wanna go further you can create an alt FC which you can then use as an extra storage space and easier time to transfer items.

Because as an Omni crafter I don't have any issues with space at all, and I tend to keep only items I know that I will use. This also includes glamour items and raid items. Yeeee~ah.... saving whole inventories to the disk every 15s is insanely excessive. All because someone somewhere cried once about having lost some crafted item. I'd say it's much rarer than a character with a house, but it seems SE loves to cater to these special <1%s.
No wonder they're having performance issues, both with file storage and with network. Increasing that autosave to 1m, or even 2, would take a lot of stress off their servers while still being reasonable for that "gods forbid one person just happens to craft something super rare just when a server crashes and thus losing it" argument.
After being fed the "reasons" mentioned above (storage and network issues, in general) for why we can't have more inventory space, for months, only to get this shoved down our throats now - I mean, yeah, whatever, suddenly those issues don't exist if you just pay some extra, huh? Ew. -

SE needs to implement an "wardrobe museum" where you can put in gear, it will strip it of all materia and dyes, and you can never take the gear out again but it still remains available for glamour.
This should be fairly cheap to implement. All you need is a table(s) with a key-value pairs. The key will be the gear id and the value will be a binary variable to determine if the player has the piece of gear. -

When you look at data storage solutions, there are certain "tiers" of solutions requiring progressively higher capital expenditure. Most likely the devs either missed the mark estimating the amount of storage people were consuming, or the next tier was simply over their then capital budget. So they settled for what they can afford, and that system started to hit its limits quicker than anyone thought.
The budget has to be split between maintenance and developing new content. Unlike commercial projects that may go into production and steadily recover its development costs, MMORPGs must continue to develop new content and new technology because game players are extremely sensitive to innovation. That limits the amount of budget one can spend to "fix" something that isn't really that broke---i.e. the inventory system.
We can probably expect the same inventory system until at least 4.0 (very optimistic) or 5.0 (would be nice) or even 6.0 (most likely). In any case, current development resources will not be invested in over-hauling the existing inventory back-end, mostly likely due primarily to Return-On-Investment reasons. Once FFXIV has earned enough real profit for Square Enix and show a promise of many more years of cash income, it is then possible to convince the directors to invest in an overhaul of the storage back-end. Or if subscriber count shows explosive growth and they need to upgrade the whole data storage solution, then the inventory subsystem can get an overhaul along the way.
So it is entirely possible that the reasons given regarding the inventory storage limits are all real. -

Thats assuming you have the space available. Youd have to be up high or be in your own FC to have the amount of slots needed to move about items of decent quantity.
