I keep getting mixed advice for DRK Tanking

ok my dark is at lv 49 and will be lv 50 soon.I have never tanked in FF14 before and don't want to be a liability. The issue is that I continue to hear mixed advice on going STR accessories/ all sTR attributes vs all VIT accessories/attributes. could a seasoned DRk Knight help this novice out?

This is the best answer you'll get . Stay on vit gear until you know the content confidently enough that you can swap a few out . Considering the dark knight doesn't not have a large range of CD's I wouldn't swap to many over once you do

Right at the Start your are WEAK! You have no Gear which supports you and everything. You want to learn your Skills, figure out how to combine Stuff and so on.

So you want to grab everything that makes your Health go up and mitigate more DMG. When you hit 50 and dont have any Tome Tank Gear around the Ishgardian NPC's sell you a complete Ilvl 115 Set. Costs around 150K Gil. It's worth the investion.

You can always reset you Points later with a Drink at your Grand Company. So take Vit until you think you got the hang of the Class and slowly start exchanging Vit Gear with STR Gear. Heck i have Alexander clear and just started exchanging Vit against STR Gear. Don't let other Players mess with you. If you are uncomfortable with that HP Pool they tell you and you should wear STR Gear and Shit. Take the Vit Stuff. While its true that Tank DPS can matter its not true in "Normal" Content.

Alexander Savage will be the first Encounter where Tank and Healer DPS really will make a difference between Do or Wipe.

This is good advice.

One more point of caution I'll throw in as a healer main -- the lower your health pool the thinner the margin of error, even if it is, in theory, 'enough' to handle the encounter. Things don't always go well. Being able to take some hits without a healer glued to your health bar frees up their time to do other things and allows a greater margin of error in panic scenarios.

People suggesting STR for tanks aren't wrong, it's just misleading to passerbys reading the forums.

Tank priority is
Manage Aggro > Survivability > DPS and Support.
If you don't manage aggro, you're of no use to the party and are probably dead anyways.
Once aggro is managed, the goal is letting the healer keep you alive, focus on this.
If and only if the first two priorities are confidently met, should you start working on DPSing more and focus on whatever additional support your tanking job has to offer. More DPS means a smoother run for everybody, but if your healer is struggle-busing then it's not worth the trade off.

Ummm.....if you are LEVELING your DRK go STR all the way.

I did and had no problem tanking the 4mans and was able to kill stuff reasonably fast which means smoother leveling.

Once you get to 60 then you can work out str/vit

I will say this thought.......increasing your HP is only as good as the amount you use.

If you have 15k hp but you never go below 3k in any given run on a usual basis....that extra id say.....2.5k isnt doing you any favors.

As a DRK that leveled 1-60 with a full STR focus (or just about) I have never had any issues on any pulls in 4mans....dark dance, shink, wall ,etc....its pretty easy actualy.

What I did, and will continue to do, is pump all stat points into Strength. My logic is that it helps my damage and consequently, my ability to hold hate better. More Strength = More Hate, essentially.

However, beyond that, starting out, I think you should make sure to use Fending armor and accessories until you are truly confident in your abilities as a Dark Knight. Paladin players have it easier because to be quite frank, Paladin is Easy Mode Tanking. Source? Myself, and a level 52 Paladin currently grinding on their Zodiac before I continue leveling that job. Paladin currently has only 1 rotation of Weapon skills for example at this point for me.

Dark Knight has THREE.

My Dark Knight however is level 54. And in my experience the 400 bonus HP you would get from those stat points pumped into Vit do not help me nowhere near as much as Strength has on matters. You kill mobs just a touch faster and your aggro management is stronger for it.

So, basically, Str for stat points is what I would recommend, and all Fending gear until you find your comfort zone. That's a good mix, I feel.

Also, be sure to maximize your potential tanking abilities. I've seen a lot of Drks not use Dark Dance + Dark Arts for example. The boost to your dodging ability helps tremendously, and almost every fight I open starts with Dark Arts + Dark Dance if I can help it. Then as the fight progresses, Foresight, Shadow Skin, Shadow Wall, and so on.

The reason why a lot of Drk's seem squishy is because, well, they are. Many don't open with abilities that make them take less damage. Paladin can get away with a Foresight starting out mostly because of their shield. Blood bath etc, helps.

Not so much Drk. We eat a ton of damage to the face compared to PLD starting a fight. So be aware of it, and prep your cool downs when opening.

This is actually how to make it smart. You shouldn't brainlessly listen ppl saying "real raid tank go full str u noob", or "got all vit and get sturdy".

Start with all vit, try and gradually swap one piece of accessory at time if you feel you don't need so many HP.

You can consider turning progression points from vit to str using Keeper's Hymn instead of swapping an accessory as it about same amout than one (about 30 str/vit).

I'm not a DRK (it's only 51) but I know tanking. My suggestion would be 30 STR for attributes (and keep dumping in the remaining 10), and for accessories go with Vitality for now. As you get more comfortable swap them over. I'm currently running Warrior, but I used the same setup on PLD as well back in 2.0-2.55, and you don't lose that much in terms of survivability vs. what you gain in aggro management. Also, coming fairly soon (3.05/3.1) we'll also be getting higher iLV crafted accessories, if you REALLY want to play DRK I'd suggest getting them and overmelding VIT/STR if you can afford it. It truly is the best of both worlds.

This is about the same advice for new paladin and warrior as well. However for 3.0 (by the way stats are worded now) Dex was removed from the block/parry rate and Str from the amount blocked/parried. Those are no longer part of the tank selection. My mix of right side pieces Str/Vit was mostly anything that had +accuracy. In fact I'm still trying to pick accessories with either +Accuracy > +Determination. However I don't know how much changed with determination in 3.0 or if its still relevant to stack it. The only thing I can think of that may be a third stat for dark would be piety melds on accessories. But I've yet to read anything that suggests a buffed Mp pool would be of any use at this time.

I remember being told by folks in DF (2.50), who want to speed run or do large pulls to drop +str for +vit so healer can dps more. Or (when everyone else was over geared) to have more +str to make up the difference so you can better maintain hate. Especially if youre weapon is/was lower than the rest of the party.

I am aware there were folks that had a recommended max Hp for Paladin and Warrior based on what turn you were on. Then you could swap vit for str once you reached that point in gear. Otherwise the Hp would be overkill and the -str would lessen the overall party dps. I've yet to find any thing that gives a +vit = Hp break down for new 3.0 content yet by the tanks job. Let alone the changes to parry stat and how it actually affects the parry rate now. Hopefully someone reading this thread might have an idea, however this would lead more into secondary matera melding on top the stat allocation/builds.

Meh argument. There's not a tank in the game that can't hold hate if played correctly even against the most zealous of DPS, I don't care if you're wearing BRD accessories with your stat points in Mind. Also DA Power Slash completely trivializes hate. Do it once, twice, and you can hold hate for the next 2-3 minutes before you need to touch anything that generates additional aggro, even with no investment in STR.

For the OP, do your best to disregard comparisons people are making to PLD/WAR. DRK plays very differently. If you're cross classing GLA/MRD CDs, you have a large total pool of defensive abilties, some with very short recast times. The name of the game with DRK is stacking multiple CDs and knowing when its fluff and when its a tankbuster, and wether its physical or magical, as well as taking advantage of the synergy and large relative uptime of DRK CDs. As far as DPS goes MP directly correlates to damage. MP=DPS. Study your ability tooltips, familiarize yourself with the MP costs/returns of your abilties, and make active use of abilties that the other tanks have no equivalent of, such as Salted Earth, Dark Mind, Plunge, and Abyssal Drain (targeted, ranged, AoE hate-a brilliant tool.)

Remember: Hate>Positioning>Mitigation>Damage. Get aggro, get things into position for the rest of your party to do their jobs optimally, make sure you can handle the damage that comes with the aggro, then deal damage to maintain the aggro. Every tank in the game has the resources to get a solid lead in aggro against one or many targets ahead of equally geared DPS/Healers regardless of investment in damage. Regardless of opinions in the tanking meta and flashy things you can see tanks doing in farmed and/or dated content that they are grossly overgeared for, a tank is a tank and the above is the sequence of priorities, 100% of the time, always, no exceptions. As you get better, hate, positioning, and mitigation will become second nature and then you can focus more on DPS, but still only after those first 3 steps. That's a skillset that you should earn though and not just dive into from day one. Experienced and/or bored tanks love to brag about their deeps and ability to use minimal mitigation and get carried by awesome healers, essentially cheesing content they know like the back of their hand with players they trust for shits and giggles or a challenge. Don't get star-struck by that, and don't be reckless on content that you aren't familiar with. Learn to tank then learn to dps. Keep that mentality and those priorities and your groups will clear content, and if they don't... well, it wasn't your fault. ;)

I do not feel that this is a Meh argument. Especially having come from playing Paladin first with full Vit pumped into my stats and full Vit gear, vs Drk now at 54 with full vit Gear and stats pumped into strength. Two tank classes and one at end game for quite a very long time before 3.0

There is a difference between the classes, yes. But even then I am noticing that I am holding hate much easier on my Drk vs my initial Vit stat tests. Especially against multiple mobs. What you suggest with Dark Arts + Power Slash is likely vs a single mob. And in that case, it is for the most part true. Against multiple mobs however, such an action would reduce your MP to almost nothing very quickly. Of course, I am not saying that you would advise doing such. Likely you yourself do not.

However, to say it is a Meh argument, is quite fallacious. It does make a difference. As a test I recently diverted all of my bonus stats on PLD to Str from it's former Vit. Yes, I lost about 400 HP. But the damage I am doing as a Paladin now, even in shield oath, has given me a noticeable difference. Hate is proving much easier for me to manage vs going full Vit on stats, and Dungeons are quite easier for me on Paladin now as well as that of my group, as everything is getting burned down that much faster. DPS and nukes are able to go full on out with little worry of pulling hate from me. My healers almost always have MP to spare and we can go non stop from pull to pull due to how quickly things die. I have had pretty much zero issues, save for an instance of two extremely overzealous Ninjas in a Dungeon that decided they were the tanks and in their effort to do a lightning quick speed run, pulled everything on them and ate a death or two. While I watched and just shook my head before running in to pull the mobs off of them.

Strength does make a difference, and to say it doesn't I feel is being disingenuous. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. Perhaps your experience is different. But then again, so is mine. Each chooses their own path. Whether or not they make it work without issue is what matters in the end.

Everything else you have said I agree on for the most part.

If you don't have a healer friend healing you, you should probably go mostly VIT and put some STR in there. If you do have a good healer friend, that knows how to heal really well, then you can go full STR. Reason you want VIT in PuG's is the fact that there are so many really bad healer's out there and having that extra health on your bar gives them some room for error. If you have both sets of VIT and STR accesories or have them melded for your level, if you find that your healer is doing nothing but spamming cures on you (no dps), then you can shave off more of your health and go for a more offensive stance to make up for their slack of DPS.

As for those making the argument that STR is to hold hate better, don't do it for that 100%. All tanks are designed to keep hate all the time in up to date gear while still sitting in full VIT. If you're going full STR, learn your rotations and be ready to spam them to up your DPS, as thats what STR is really for as well as maintaining hate better.

I'm going to end your problem with this statement.

DRK is a tank. So prioritize what you need to do. 1> Hold aggro. 2> Stay alive. 3> DPS. In THAT order. So here's how you do that. Your aggro holding isn't often based on your gear so long as your rotation is done right. If your gear is severely outdated, it may be a problem but not likely. Next is staying alive. This is only second priority because you should have a healer helping you. A healer can keep you alive but if you don't hold aggro, that won't matter. So what you need to consider is how squishy are you? Do you have enough HP? Defense? If you are constantly being told by healers you are hard to heal, make sure your defense oGCD rotation is good then look into vit gear. If they are constantly bored (in high level content) and not having to worry about you and you are having a small issue with DPS checks, maybe switch some pieces to balance the tables.


Remember, above all else, you are a tank. It's your job to survive and draw attention. People WILL complain. That will always be a thing. Just do you and let the others deal with their anger. Won't hurt your q time.

Instead of telling him VIT > STR or VIT < STR why don't you all teach him how to rotate his cooldowns. Learn the ins and outs of your cooldown rotations and how well you can tank and go from there.

I would advise against STR. The added dmg is negligible and so is the aggro you'll get. If you stay with VIT, you give your healer breathing room. They can stay in DPS mode much longer and actually do more DPS than a STR tank. A DPS-mode healer blows away the STR tank dmg.

I have never, ever run into aggro problems on a VIT tank, unless the DPS blows everything at the start of the fight before I get mobs gathered and placed, but even STR won't help there.

We're talking about DRK in this thread. DRK dmg isn't negligible at all, as darkness negate dmg penalty from grit, we're basically warriors with full time inner beast and high potency combo.
A full str DRK in grit can easily put 650 dps on dummy, over 750 without grit (as an offtank): less than war (because of berserk), but you definitively can't tell it's negligible

I'm not sure if healer in cleric stance can still push higher than that since he would have to heal as well and can't contribute to dmg 100% of the time.

The aggro management argument is false here since we can buff power slash on single target or spam unleash with blood price on on multiple ones. DRK isn't called king of aggro for no reason. A full VIT DRK shouldn't have any issue with that.

Start vit and work in str. Most of all feel comfortable with what you're doing as a tank before you try lowering vit in favor of str. I may get flamed for this but I personally go all vit so that my gf can lightly heal me and go full dps(she's WHM). It seems to work out really well.. ^^; but yeah.. Just make sure to experiment with full vit.. Leaning towards str.. And see what feels best! If you're worried about messing up.. Don't be.. Because as a tank.. No.. As a human..you're gonna mess up from time to time zzz at least mess up in a way that makes you play better ^^

Tanking 101: don't piss off the gf.

I did all str I didn't have any problems leveling up dungeons at first were hard but it forced me into a position on how to manage my CD, which I think is extremely important. Endgame if you are main tank I would do 2vit 3str accessories. If off tank go all str. You'll need two sets of accessories. Always have full set of vit and str so you can adjust to the fight.

Attribute points? All str.
Accessories? Do what you want.

When I levelled WAR in the first week of the game I stuck to VIT because back then WAR was a paper tank.

At level 50 for the first instance it was VIT all the way very few tanks used STR and the argument of STR vs VIT only really started to turn from VIT to STR after everybody was full i90 gear and breezing through the content. (Pharos Sirius caused big problems though since a lot of mechanics did lots of damage) After this time STR was the obvious choice since all the following level 50 content was far weaker than the average item level assuming you managed to cap yourself before the next wave of content, the only place where VIT > STR was new coils where people penta melded accessories for best of both worlds.

Early Heavensward is essentially a reset and 51-60 you will find unless you have a competent healer STR accessories will make it slightly more difficult in the new levelling dungeons, trash hits a lot harder than before and unless you are prepared some pulls can be surprising. I levelled DRK as a first timer through all the new dungeons and had zero problems holding hate i130 up to the i135 HQ gear from main story and only really using quest gear up to 60. It's almost impossible for anyone to say STR or VIT right now because Alexander Savage will be what decides is the most optimum selection, most content below that will be overgeared by the time everyone hits the cap of esoteric gear (i190/200?) and in that case it is likely that for anything other than new Alexander Savage runs STR will shine again also by that time you will easily be competent enough to know how much you require anyway.

STR for attributes definitely. Gear u wanna play by ear.

Here's the thing, VIT really only matters for surviving large hits like tank-busters during boss fights. Outside of that, how much HP you have doesn't matter nearly as much as how much HP you can recover/how much you can mitigate over an extended period of time. If your healer is terrible, the trivial amount of HP from ur VIT attr points isn't going to help you.

STR on the other hand, will help with HP recover when you consider the HP absorption of DRK. It will also increase your dmg to help you keep threat, killing mobs quicker means incoming DPS goes down faster, and increased parry chance also decreases the incoming DPS.

I tank with all my attributes on STR and 2/5 of my accessories are Slaying. I don't find myself squishy. I lose aggro when i totally neglect it but grabbing it back it super easy and if i am playing good, i can fit in a few more dps rotations before i do my enmity combo.

I took a break from tanking yesterday and went back to tearing up my SCH. I had the chance to compare a couple of tanks i got into party with. For the sake of this thread, i will only tackle the DRKs i've been with. I do not see much difference healing full vit vs full str ones but what's noticeable is dps constantly ripping hate off the vit ones. It could be attributed to them learning the dungeon but the sometimes, these are tanks that are already in the upper ilvls.

I also try to check the jobs the person already played. Those who have all tanks maxed out or have a few healers maxed out tends to be the better tanks. However, those who came from dps jobs, regardless if they are vit or str, they're both painful experiences(that's what she said).

Bottomline, it takes quite a lot of factors to judge a good tank from a bad one but if we're only concerned with stat allocation, it doesn't matter.

Go vitality when you start to lvl as a new tank, once you get comfortable go into str. Once you've played around with how you pull mobs, how many you wanna pull, you can get into "what can I do to keep threat while popping the necessary cool downs to survive". Honestly with the changes right now to str accessories vs vit in endgame I find myself wearing full vit with points into str, I rarely ever wear str off pieces maybe it's because i'm a drk. Who knows lol.

Firstly because HP is a buffer for the healer, allowing them to do other things by alotting them time, and secondly because tank busters aren't even the hardest thing to heal a tank through. When things get messy I've been the tank at low HP, and I've healed the tank at low HP. I've eaten mountain busters while not topped off because the healer got distracted by a DPS an incredible amount of times and I've survived because my base HP pool allowed me to take more damage.

Currently for A4 in my experience you want around 15k hp min as MT (for pld/drk). Can possible get away with lower but I wouldn't recommend much lower than that. I sit comfortably around 16k hp and swap in str accessories. Until tuesday it doesn't really matter one way or the other as there is no "hard" content in the game atm. Everything is story mode and easy mode.

Put all your points in STR, there is literally no reason not to. Whether you use STR or VIT accessories is up to the content you do, and whether or not you are using a pickup group or not. You can currently tank anything in the game with STR accessories, but you need to know how to use your CDs properly and have a decent healer. VIT accessories are more of a safe option, use them when you are still learning(most people wont mind if you do). In my option, it is best to use 3 STR and 2 VIT accessories in duty finder once you know how to play your class.

How much time do you think you're buying a healer exactly? with 35 attr points, we are talking about a whopping 700ish HP @ L60. for perspective, my whm cure 1 is a little over 2800hp, regen tick is around 1000-1100hp.

So in level 60 content, how frequently are healers letting you drop below 700hp and you end up surviving? (HG/LD doesnt count) Because that is the benefit of your attr points in VIT. STR on the otherhand is helping you the whole time you dps + impacts parry and hp absorb.

I main a WHM...

Every HP does not count. For example if you have 15k hp, but never drop below 1k, 1k of your hp did not impact anything. Meanwhile, you would benefit from STR nearly the entire fight.

I never argued this, I've said the same--except I consider attributes another "play by ear" as they're easily swapped. But tomato tomato.

Frequency is irrelevant to the point. My issue was with you telling new tanks more hp is a bad thing. There is absolutely no way to determine x # of HP is suitable to all content even if you were to limit it to all "capable" players (which you didn't) because it's dependant on
1) tank ability (even the best PLDs have a difference in mitigation rotations)
2) healer ability (your WHM forgot Eye for an Eye was a thing, and Virus? Sounds gross.)
3) additional damage to ALL players before and after anticipated damage
3) The buffers that sustain us;
- Tank Survivability
- Healer potency
- Support potential

If your tank is always over 1000 hp for every encounter in the game in every situation then you're some sort of god-like WHM, an easier feat for a SCH to carry entire parties this way (or neglect the rest of the party, I suppose) but still god-like, and be that as it may, we can't all rest assured you'll be there to save us. In any case to your point, it's not unusual to come back from any point if HP because skills like Benediction/Tetragrammaton, Lustrate, and Essential Dignity make comebacks like that common enough. In fact they usually sit around waiting for that exact circumstance.

There is no such thing as too much HP when viewing the game in it's entirety. There are times where STR is more viable, but this is not the same thing. I didn't quote your post, I quoted this line specifically because this sort of information being fed to newbie tanks and tanks with issues just butchers our DF.
