The PLD in Final Fantasy was never really holy. You are thinking about D&D (and what spawned from it) here.
Right, FFXI and FFXIV Paladins are simply called "Naito" (Knight), this is different from FF9's Beatrix (compared to Steiner) or FF4 Cecil's PLD which was "Paradin/Seiken". Although, FFXI's PLD had Cures/Holy/Flash.
Knight FF1 : Had low level White Magic. (Up to level 3 white magic)
Knight FF3 : In the remake for the DS they were capable of casting low level White Magic. (Up to Lvl 1 white magic)
Cecil Harvey as a Paladin FF4 : Cecil was able to cast low level White Magic such as Cure, Cura, Esuna, Pro/Shell, Raise, etc.
Paladin FFTA : Had abilities such as Saint Cross and Holy Blade.
Paladin FFTA2 : Similar to the FFTA with Saint Cross and Holy Blade, also recevied Sanctify.
Paladin FFXI : Many White Magic spells, Undead Killer Trait, etc.
Paladin Summary
Throughout the series Paladins and Knights have also been able to equip Holy Swords and Armor.
FFT "Holy Knights" could use "Holy Sword" skills. FF9 Beatrix was a Paladin and could cast mid-tier white magic and 'Holy'.
Give PLD holy...then we'll have everything....except poster boy. Maybe in the 3rd expansion when people realize pld is bad ass as is.
It would....sightly less damage than warrior or drk. But crazy high raid utility. A new heal that can target anyone and if we heal someone else we get 50% back. All we're missing is a good aoe. Pop in holy, problem fixed and solved. Just gotta find a good way to keep up mp.
Ignore the white magic if you want then, it doesn't change the fact that your statement "The PLD in Final Fantasy was never really holy." is just wrong. There are incarnations of the job in the Final Fantasy series that are indeed associated with being Holy; you just just choose to ignore the other examples for reasons.
I'm not here to defend the OP's claim of 14's PLD not being Holy enough, but rather if you want to make a statement, at least know what you are talking about.
The fact it's called "knight" in Japanese doesn't really matter. They purposefully chose to call it Paladin in English, so they are obviously making allusions to Paladins in their other games (which also happen to be called "knights"... sometimes with a qualifier).
That being said, there are plenty of "holy" aspects to the Paladin. They can use White magic for one. Hallowed Ground is an obvious holy reference. Flash, Circle, Spirits Within... even Rage of Halone has a god's name in it. As for new skills, they have Divine Veil and Clemency.
And then it gets interrupted.
I love clemency even though i am mad for the cast time.
Because what Is this skill supposed to do? My guess would be emergency heal on party member. But where Is the emergency when you need 3 seconds to cast it and might BE interrupted
I dont know considéring the mp Cost it should be instant or like esuna/leech (ie 1 second cast time)
So which other statements? About every Final Fantasy has some kind "holy" weapon that can be equipped by some character (is the Dragoon holy because he can equip a holy lance in some games?), some even have it as a simple elemental status iirc. I doubt that is what the OP wants when he asks about the PLD being more holy.
I don't know about the FF:T spinoffs, never really played one, but from a quick read it seems to be the same there.
If you want some kind of holy knight that throws around holy light and is really close with his deity, that is just not the Final Fantasy depiction of a Paladin.
Edit:
This is what a Paladin is in this game:
Quote:
For centuries, the elite of the Sultansworn have served as personal bodyguards to the royal family of Ul'dah. Known as paladins, these men and women marry exquisite swordplay with stalwart shieldwork to create a style of combat uncompromising in its defense. Clad in brilliant silver armor, they charge fearlessly into battle, ever ready to lay down their lives for their liege.
To be a paladin is to protect, and those who choose to walk this path will become the iron foundation upon which the party's defense is built.
Edit 2:
I am sorry, I almost missed the insult. I played about every Final Fantasy from the main series up to 12. Most of them when they were new. I think I am qualified to make that statement.
Problem is, you're still wrong when you say that PLD "was never really holy".
Lorewise, the first real PLD (Cecil) is definitely holy and White Magic is frequently tied to holy (Hence the white magic spell by the same name). In fact, when Kain does the same trial as Cecil, his job become a Holy Dragoon.
Rest assured, if someone said that PLD has "always" been holy, they'd be wrong too.
"never" and "always" do not suffer exceptions.
As for XIV, lorewise, we have nothing holy. In fact, the templars are more "holy" than us.
Actually, PLD should have the highest raw potential but (Before all the WAR/DRK lovers flame me) should need to spread its stats
He should need Strength to do damage and reduce damage
Dex to significantly increase its block rate (With a real impact)
Mind to increase the effectiveness of its spell
Thus, to be a full PLD, you'd have to sacrifice your full potential, which make you do less damage than other tank with the lack of strength, have less HP with the lack of Vit, etc...
For me, it also would have been fine for PLD to take a little more damage than WAR (compared to their HP pool) but to be able to Cure themselves far more.
I think PLD in v1 was closer to this concept and was a little more interesting. Well, it seems we're coming back to it with the new skills :)
Actually to be honest every player character in the game lore seems to be holy as we're all the servants of Hydolien w/e her name is and going out to banish the darkness....so in a way we're all paladins. ;D
Firstly, the FFXIV version of PLD does not use white magic - they can cross class Conjury spells like Cure, which is a totally different school of magic (which is more akin to the traditional Geomancer Job, in that they're actually drawn from the surrounding environment). True 'holy' White Magic is actually a forbidden art in Eorzea. And Flash, Circle of Scorn and Rage of Halone are not even PLD abilities - they're Gladiator skills, which shows, to use a pun, the real power behind the throne.
You're not even a true PLD anyway, you're just a GLA who has equipped a magic crystal that allows them to quickly master a few skills taught by the Sultansworn, Uld'ah's royal guard. If you're thinking you can be a DnD style 'holy knight' you're playing the wrong game. And as Seku said, all players are technically 'holy' in that they're the Warrior of Light, chosen by Hydaelyn Herself, regardless of whatever class or Job you happen to be.
Yes there are holy themes in every Final Fantasy game. But I still think the OP is thinking more in western directions, where the Paladin is usually tied to a holy task/everything that is good and righteous and is using powers granted by his deity (exaggerated statement, that is not the case in every game of course).
I actually tried to make a relative statement (hence "never really holy"). It seems that didn't come through. English is not my main language.
