Au Ra is basically Hyur with bone headgear, cosplay tail and terrible skin condition. It's vastly different from the original designs.
Can we have the next race which is not 'Hyur' + 'some minor gimmick' please?

how do you even see a resemblance to Hyurs? o_o
I can understand Elezen, maybe. but Hyurs? xD
Something more mature or beastial looking would be nice. Currently only Roes and Highlanders (female) look like adults, and even they are quite young looking. Personally I would like some kind of bird race. Don't know if there is one in Final Fantasy lore.

We need elderly lady faces. Inb4oldladiesinsubligarsappear
How can you not see it? Aside from mentioned minor features, they look exactly like humans.

Yep, a girl's face and body.
yes, hyurs (human). the races in this game are basically humans with differing animal features. Something more akin to bangaa or nu mou would be nice. Not these races specifically but something that actually looks beastly, not just a human with minimal animal features.
Most people see a resemblance to Mi'qote. Maybe Au Ra are not as bland, aren't they? ;)
That being said I woulnd't mind a more..alien looking race.
the problem is... races that don't look like a human are not popular.
demon girls with wings :D
The real succubus race would be interesting, the one in the Hauke Manor~
They should make a beastly race to have more diversity and please those begging for it, then mixed heritage races.
That last option could please almost every player in this game and those who are not playing it.
I want a tentacle monster playable race >.> or maybe a clothes dissolving blob race! =D
Make them more beastly and they will end as not playable beastmen.
Then instead of a new race, why not just make Goblins playable?
And yes, the playable races share the same humanoid body shape so the devs don't have to create new lv1-60+ gear for every single race.
What the devs could do to make a race more beastly without altering the body shape too much is more fur (for both gender)
The races need to fit the gear.
this, plus the fact that a race too much different from the human, will need a massive rework for all the armor present soo far into the game, for make them be adapted to the body shape of this race. it's not World of Warcraft where most armor are simply texture over simple model. each armor have a lot of complex detail that will be a pain to make work for this race.
then, they need to be sure this race will be a hit, because it will be a huge investement for the game. create a race that will appeal to only a minority is a huge loss. we can argue that they can do it for be original and such, but...if being original means loose cash, don't hope see it. originality are not always the best choice in this industry!
I would totally play non-human-like race. I'm hoping they add a more beast like race as well. I think the biggest issue is gear design. If they had a race like Nanaki, I wouldnt be anything else ever.
But I'd even settle for:

or this (Which is what I WISH Miqo'te had been like. I played this race in Archeage)

Wargen's were also cool, and my 2nd favorite race. (Would have been my main if I didn't already have a lvl 80 Nelf)

I also had a Chua

I'm actually sad that there aren't more actually full-beast-like races...I'd totally play!
Poor SE, no matter how hard they try, folks are just never happy.
Here are the rules for making a new race in XIV:
1) Must be at least somewhat visually appealing to NA AND JP sensibilities.
2) Must fit into all current gear with only minor tweaking. Accommodating for animalistic hands, snouts, and feet is NOT "minor tweaking." Horns, funny ears, tails, and height/build differences ARE minor. In other words, it must be similar to the 5 base races.
3) Must be something a large number of players, not just you, would pay money for.
4) Must be able to legally walk around the 3 main cities.
This means "more animalistic" is straight out because it violates 2 of those (beast tribes are NOT well-liked by the populace of Eorzea, and they'd have to redo all the gear.)
Races that meet this criteria, though, would be the Garlean nobles, Padjal, a variant of the Gria, Viera, and POSSIBLY Nu Mou if they base it on the Lalafell models without making it look creepy as hell.
Basically it either has to have human characteristcs, or be small and cute like the lalafell.
Think within these parameters, and it's more likely to get added.
Every race within the game can be described as "Hyur + some other gimmick" to some degree, it's a matter with how relaxed your definitions are. The "original designs" looked like Hyurs with bigger horns and weird hands/feet, a bit different than the base, but not enough to say "Vastly different". The Auri men don't receive nearly as much criticisms to looking bland, so the obvious answer should be that if they're going to use a Hyur esque form, they use one that isn't the Midlander.
SE will not design a race that requires equipment retooling. This is why miqote and soon au ra equipment no longer has tail slits in the back. Au ra horns just clip through helmets. Heck the 2nd hairstyle from the top right clips with the horns.
I don't see us getting any super unique races. Not to mention that those aren't popular in most games anyways.

I'd totally rock an Mamool'ja :3
"I want less human-esque races!"
-proceeds to play Viera when it's made available-
Elins.

Not to mention they don't really look voluptuous. At least not what I'd expect from a succubus. :O
I'm for more beastly races, but I would make a mouse race the exception, if only because I want the FFXIV version of this.
Woah~ Calm down there tiger. Ul'dah wont even let other human races in...they're having a hard enough time supporting their own people. And beastmen are only recently starting to get along with Eorzeans. So of course Ul'dah wouldn't let beastman in at the moment. That's not to say they will never be allowed in Ul'dah.
Mamool'ja, Goblins and Qiqirin....and although not a beastman per-say...look at moogles too o.o....and yeah ^^ Tis Limsa
^^ I'm not a fan myself of that design. But everyone has their own tastes :)
As far as final fantasy races go, Au Ra is completely new.
I find the females between Miqo'te and Hyur in body frame. While the males have lean muscle, where it looks good.
Anyways depending on their stat distrubtion, i will most likely stay with Hyur, because i like that "normal (human perfection)" look.
Both would completely break lore and be very highly unlikely to ever happen. Cid is an exception, not the rule.
Gria would be too similar to Au Ra (plus, how would one implement a flying race?), Viera have been long denied due to a) being too similar to the already-existing Mi'qote and b) the devs' statements that any race introduced will not be a straight importation from another game; all races will be unique to FFXIV (minor retooling of the races from XI aside). Also, how would one really implement a Nu Mou, other than giving a Lalafell donkey ears and a Galka tail (and the obvious snout removal)?
The only hope that any of us might even have of playing a "non-Hyuran" race would be the possible implementation of vanity gear similar to the Moogle Suit (head, arms, legs, tail).
I'd pay another $20 for the ability to play dress-up as a Burmecian...
Only Ul'dah have a law that forbid beastmen to enter the city.
http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Mutamix%27s_MateriaQuote:
It was approximately ten years ago that the last of the beastmen was driven out from Ul’dah. Faced with an impending imperial invasion, the Syndicate passed a policy to purge the sultanate of all beastmen, who found themselves unceremoniously banished by the bevy. Overnight, the sight of sylvan crystal merchants and goblin junk dealers alike up and vanished from the Sapphire Avenue Exchange. Despite the decree’s dubiousness, it was warmly welcomed by the majority of merchants, who regarded reduced rivalry with relish.
I wish SE would have transfered the old newspaper articles from the old Lodestone to the new one before putting down the old.
I would like a fish race please

I really like the look of the Au Ra. I'm not about to change my race from my adorable Lalafell, but I happily accept them into the game. Bestial races would only work if there was more than one of them, since they would otherwise be the odd one out. It's usually best to settle that as a design aesthetic from the start, rather than trying to redesign years worth of equipment and gear just to accommodate them.
I think SE are doing a fine job of creating the envisioned character's in their game.
Padjal probably, but they're STILL more likely than literally any of the beastmen.
The 3-eyed Garlean Nobles, though? They seem to be weirdly more common than we give them credit for...
Just as an example, we have Cid, Nero, Gaius (most likely), the emperor, the new emperor, and Nael.
Defectors such as Cid are a possibility, at least more of a possibility than other races. That said, they're not likely since even Padjal have more notable physical traits than they do (Garlean nobles are literally just Hyur with a 3rd eye. Padjal at least have the "youthful appearance" shtick going for them to the point that Kan-E, A-Ruhn, E-Sumi, Raya-O, O-App, and A-Towa all have unique models.)
Oh sure it's actually quite possible...Ul'Dah might be getting a revamp eventually that does exactly that.
But here's the issue: They didn't when the game launched. We have "individual timelines," so since the Ul'Dah policy was a certain way before, then it can't change to allow new players/characters unless they rewrite the entire story.
the only reason Au Ra fit in is that one group is nomadic and thus could just wander in, while the other is from a region with tons of refugees, thus you'd quite literally be there for the exact same reason as Oboro, Yugiri, and Tsubame.
Oh and normal people can't see Moogles. Pretty much just special people like us and the Padjal. It's part of why we get the job of delivering letters.
With so many "wanting" new bestial/ alien/ original race options i say give it to them. Make something that satisfies the the cries for something new and exciting... and watch how little it's chosen, how much time is wasted in it's design, and how few actually wanted it in the first place. If people wanted such diversity in their mmo's then they wouldn't have left those games oh so oft mentioned with those super unique and original character designs. Out of curiosity how are Acheage, GW2, Terra, Wildstar, and WoW doing?
we have lots of beast tribes , but dont think beastmen are able to be "warriors of the light" :(
goblins , ixali , kobold , Amalj'aa , qiqirn, sylphs.....
