Why do we have 1000 TP? Would it be better if we had 100?

Is there any good reason as to why we have 1000 TP? Nothing in the game, as far as I know consumes a TP amount that ends in anything but 0. There is nothing that consumes 55 TP for example. We can only consume TP in multiples of 10, and we gain 60 TP per 3 seconds, which is a multiple of 10. So why exactly do we have 1000 TP instead of 100? If we had 100, we would gain 6 TP per second, and our skills would consume, 5,7,8,10,12, instead of 50,60,70,80,100,120. It would look nicer and take up less space on my 720p monitor. The only reason this is, that I can come up with is that we may get new skills that consume new amounts of TP, but will that really happen? Also we might as well count in base 12.

Because when we have 99999 HP that 100 is gonna look weird.

I'd like to add to your question. Why ONLY 1000tp? Since its in the lodestone I assume its a value that is open to change in the future. When can we see gear, food or jobs have varying amounts of tp? Because that can really help in tp heavy situations.

That one extra digit take up that much space? Wouldn't the bar size be the same?

Yeah, the bar is the same and it doesn't take up so much space actually..
It's more that I think that it looks weird to always have that 0 at the end of my TP number, since it's completely obsolete anyways.

I, too, don't want to start seeing omega-level numbers.
I love that Warrior has so much HP but I don't want to start seeing 8.4 million, with damage taken being 2.6m per hit. It would literally end up being the exact same % of HP taken now, but with big numbers to help a player feel accomplished in leveling and gearing up.

There always needs to be some sort of progression, but the problem is that we're so linear now, the only progression is up. A small selection of BiS gear isn't i130, which is actually nice to see. If they can expand on this, giving us more options, I think we can avoid seeing our unnecessarily large numbers.

I would apreciate more robust TP mechanics. Allow us to manipulate it in more ways than just burning it, and a few classes/skills giving it restoration.

Ideas i've seen floated:
- Skills to use it for damage reduction (brace for impact).
- Skills to use it as a damage buff on certain types of spells (fire, earth, unaspected, etc.)
- Skills to convert TP to MP, TP to HP, TP to CP... you get the idea.
- Using TP to jump. (make jump a usable defense against more AOE types)


BL: TP is a body currency that's underutilized, when compared to MP.

Asside from bloating numbers to make the look bigger, it also leaves the door open to skills to be added later that might use say 45 tp instead of 50 rather than 4.5, I would rather have the extra 0 then the decimal. Also as far as number bloat this has been quite a controlled minimal use comparatively speaking, and in the past they removed after making sure they would not need it going forward. A good example of the forethought, in 1.0 everything was valued 10x more gil due to consumable arrows, once those were gone and the "bloat" was not needed they removed it.

I agree with you. I don't think that they would ever need to scale the numbers up like WoW did for example. It doesn't make sense, and to me it looks ugly. I usually think of it like this: If you're level 1 and have 100 HP, you fall of a cliff and you take 80 damage. If you're level 100 and have 1 000 000 hp, you would take 800 000 damage. What if the level 100 with the 1 000 000 hp would take 80 damage as well? He would have to fall very far in order to die.

It's all arbitrary anyway

Actually, the switchover in FFXI wasn't bizarre. Rather, it was LONG overdue.

For ages, methods for building up TP have depended heavily on fractional amounts of TP. With the three-digit TP bar, these values were always rounded down visually and it made it a chore to work out just how effective things that boosted your TP gain were. Multiplying everything by ten, the value of equipment and abilities that fractionally boosted TP became much more apparent.

In FFXIV, I'm guessing that they made it a four-digit number anticipating that sometime in the future there might be need for finer granularity in TP gain/usage.

A potential example: A job ability for a future job that halves TP consumption for all party members for fifteen seconds. Now, what are you going to do about abilities that cost 7 TP in a three-digit model...

No it wouldn't, because...well...wibbly wobbly timey wimey...stuff.

Honestly it's just as arbitrary as any other number. Why specifically X MP or HP? As with TP, the importance isn't its absolute value but its relation to other values (cost of a spell vs total mp pool vs regen ticks... % of HP a big attack removes, a heal spell restores, etc).

Ultimately, 1000 is a nice round decimal number. 100 is very intuitively 10% of 1000, which then gives people an intuitive feel for how much of their resource pool they're using.

Cost of spells increases with levels too, so honestly I'm not sure why they don't just make MP a fixed number that only gear can affect...

If your argument is that 1000 is a good number because it makes it easier to judge how much of the resource you're using, wouldn't 100 be as good if not better?

If everything TP related was cut down by a factor of 10, then you can easily tell how much of your TP pool something cost, since it would be by percent by design. 10TP cost? 10%. 28 TP cost? 28%.

I do agree with LineageRazor though, that 1000 allows more flexibility to assign effects and abilities for weird numbers that would resort to decimals if assigned to a system that was based on a maximum of 100.

It's a decimal thing, a higher value means less likely for decimals to become a problem later on down the road.

They already reduced max. TP in XIV from 3000 (during 1.x) to 1000.
1000 is a good number.

People actually use tp for taking and melee classes, and yes you can run out just like mages run out of mp.

This is like asking why Pokemon uses extremely small numbers, or why Eternal Sonata crits could be like, 100k at some points (so..nice..)

It's just the numbers they chose.

For some reason my monk seems to be an exceptional machine of burning TP... And I can't do anything for stopping it, even if I start using invigorate since I get less than 600 TP. At the 2nd or 3rd invigorate..... Starving already and having to change mechanics and reduce the impact D:....

Why not start at 0 TP when combat begins why you are at it!

Well for palidons during boss fates, if your main tanking it and the fate is taking a really long time. Doing that rage of harlone combo over and over, aventually I ran outa tp today in coetheas actually, and had to just stand there and wait for it to come back up.

This! I always asked myself this when i lvled a mage job.

As for tp i wish mnk had a faster natural regen for tp, you just starve for it on those long fights with not many wait for the boss to do his move mecanics

One of the rumored changes to Skill Speed coming in Heavensward is that it may end up changing the amount of TP recovered per tick.

Check how much skill speed you have on your gear. Even with a base GCD of 2.5, every DoW class runs at a TP deficit. Skill Speed and other attack speed buffs just makes the Deficit worse because you are still recovering the same amount of TP every 3 seconds while at the same time spending more TP per second.

Yup... I'm already going for the monk BiS type of "0 skill speed"

And so far, almost completed... Yet in some turns of FCOB you still having troubles, especially those without certain pauses... (In t12 for example it's easier, after certain phases and mini phases, I can even abuse with ToD and fracture...)

t10 is crazy for TP....

T13.. Well, those dives kind of give you a little of time to recover TP also.

In the rest of content, monk can still abuse the TP, at least with my current skill speed.

PS: I really hope skill speed would become that useful.

I kind of figured for myself that is the reason why everyone says that Skill Speed is useless. I do hope that rumored change will be true, so it can have some sort of use.
