A simple fix to PVP Queue times

A simple Fix to Queue times


I posted this in the PvP forum that nobody uses.

Have set match times and guaranteed participation:

Each hour have a match start at :00 :20 :40

:00 enter match
:02 Match starts
:17 Match Ends
:20 enter next match, etc

This will allow players to schedule around PvP.


The next part is 100% guaranteed participation: This gets a little trickier and messier but would make PvP more appealing, since you know when you try to play, you get to play.

150 Mael
100 Storm
100 Flames

Match 1: 24v24v24
Match 2: 24v24v24
Match 3: 24v24v24
Match 4: 24v24v24

Now it gets trickier.

54 Mael
4 Storm
4 Flames remain

Add Scrimmage mode: the remaing 62 players get divided equally into 3 teams and assigned Red,Blue,Yellow. 21v21v20 Teams are not GC but just the colors of the 3 grand companies. Rewards remain the same so there is no penalty.

A large part of why it isn't popular is the grand company restriction though. You can't play with your friends or FC mates effectively and nobody wants to leave out half of their friends when there is a ton of other content that you can do with them.

I literally never PvP in this game because I would rather do things with people I know than a bunch of random people I meet after a 20-30 minute DF queue. There is no room to make a pre-made team and actually practice as a team, which to me is the essence of what pvp should be.

My personal experience of PvP is this, no one I know plays it, or wants to. I understand that player experience varies, but the truth is that PvP in FFXIV is something that only a tiny minority of the playerbase is interested in doing.

So they should just give up and let all that development time go to waste?

No, they should not give up, but on the other hand, PvP should get an amount of dev time that is proportionate to the number of players who have actually shown an interest...

Not true. People didn't Wolves' Den a few weeks after it released either, and there is no GC restrictions there. Most healers just don't want to be walking targets.

I love PvP. The only reason I don't spend more time doing it is because the queue times are outrageous. WD and FL were popular for maybe a week upon release, and then largely dropped to ~30min queue times for very short matches.

I would love for PvP in this game to get revived, because it's one of the only things we have that isn't scripted and makes you strategize on the fly. I guess the only reason I quoted you is because I don't think that lifting the GC restrictions in FLs is as large of a reason as you seem to be implying. It would temporarily make queues better right when it released, but I don't think it would be enough to have any type of lasting effect. Most people have long histories with the Final Fantasy franchise and I would wager 99% of those people do not associate PvPing in any form or fashion with FF. This game just won't attract the crowd to make it popular, imo.

OP: Your ideas are cool, but anyone who is serious about PvP would want to do it whenever they wanted and as many times as they could. Pigeon-holing everyone into set times with only so many occurrences in a given amount of time is more of a band-aid than a fix to a problem that won't be solved with "making players plan when they want to fight other players".

I'm interested in doing PvP. I'm not interested in trying to get myself and my friends to decide on what GC to join that some of us will likely need to rank up in again in order to do levequests if we're working on books, and we won't be able to use GC gear anymore, and we'll need to farm seals all over again if we buy anything with them.


The short of it is, the GC restriction is terrible. Why not just randomly assign people/parties a GC to represent when they queue up, but keep the rewards specific to the GC they're currently in? Lore wise, the GCs are still fighting each other, and queue wise, the gaps can more easily be filled. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in XI ballista, couldn't someone from Sandy represent team Windy (since it wasn't a three way battle)? Why not just apply similar logic here?

That's just your personal experience though, the majority of people I know want to pvp but don't because they can't do it with friends and don't want to sit in a queue for a group with randoms that suck.

I'm sorry to say it but your personal experience with pvp doesn't account for the majority of the playerbase no matter how you slice it so I don't know how you can make the assumption that pvp is something only a tiny minority is interested in. I get it that not a lot of people are participating right now but PvP is currently too restricted to be fun in my opinion and I think a lot more people would show interest if it were less restricted by things such as grand company.

At the end of the day, my personal experience is that people want to play this game with their friends, so any content that doesn't allow you to do that is going to lack interest from the playerbase.

The biggest fix is to remove the GC restriction. When 72 people are queued, fire it up. The argument that Wolve's Den still failed and didn't have a GC restriction is a bad one, since Wolve's Den had many other serious issues that made it suck.

I would do frontline's all the time if I didn't have to wait 30m - 1hour for a queue.

Except you are arguing that this applies specifically to PvP, and let's be honest, in FFXIV, PvP is not popular, is it? I already agreed that personal experience varies, but that does not alter the fact that only a small minority of players who have tried PvP, have done more than dip a toe into PvP. I'm not even willing to believe that the majority of players have even tried PvP, simply because they don't want to do PvP.

I personally don't want to play PvP, but I can agree with what you are saying here. I can see that if people really want PvP - are serious about it as you say, then a sanitized, pigeon holed experience is not what they want. The issue I have there though is that this isn't a PvP game, and I do not think that unstructured, open world PvP would fit FFXIV.

Anyway, there are a couple reasons why people don't queue for PvP. As it stands currently, the queue times are terrible because people aren't queuing, which has a negative feedback loop, because now even people who WOULD occasionally like to PvP (me) don't queue...because the queue times are terrible. The GC restriction probably has alot to do with it, the team size too. Lack of incentives could have something to do with it.

They should just shoehorn some players into PvP by adding modes that incorporate some PvE elements to it, like having powerful monsters on your team, or maybe a dungeon with multiple paths where you encounter players in hallways or something. It'd be neat.

Probably from a history of encountering players like me, who will gladly murder people in open fields on a slow day (if the game allows me to) because i find it piercingly hilarious.

However, XIV will likely never have open world PvP. And the biggest PvP modes at the moment don't even really allow for gear to make a difference. There's no way PvP as it currently exists will ever bleed into PvE. And if it does, similar to how factions work in WoW or something, i'm pretty sure it'll be in specifically designated areas or something. XIV isn't in any way designed around extremes.

How to fix PVP: Remove GC teams lol.

Wolves has class limitations. You can't have whetever set up you want. You need a melee and a ranged dps, tank and healer. If I have two friends who happen to be both melees, I can't pvp with them unless they switch to a class they don't enjoy PvP with. Basically the same as friends with different GC. Also, classes are unbalanced in FF14 PvP, 4v4 is boring and pointless if you can't even choose your party set up. It is also way too short. 1 Rounds which finishes in like what, 1 minute or 2? I love PvP in every game I play, and wolves den just wasnt enjoyable, no wonder it died one week after it released.

Even in the best scenario you can only fit in 3 matches an hour. My idea was to make
it more predictable. The problem we face currently is if you want to PvP now, the now turns into a 15-30 minute wait and after the match it can be another 15-30 minute wait. My idea makes the wait a maximum of 20 minutes but its predictable, go do a tribe quest, or trial roulette or level your bird for 15minutes before getting into the cycle. Once you are in the cycle there is no real wait time.

This will make playing PvP much more accessible to the masses. I know I see the 30minute wait and typically just cancel and do something else. I could also see stuff like Coil statics getting out of T13 at :15 and deciding to PvP as a group since a match starts in 5 minutes.


As for removing GC my post allows SE to keep their lore and not punish the players.

I agree as well, and as long as a "Final Fantasy" moniker is attached to the beginning of this game I don't think it ever will be a PvP-friendly game. Open world PvP would absolutely not work, it would be used for griefing more than competition.

While we are throwing out some personal experiences, here is mine. Goblin server used to be pretty populated and involved in PvP compared to other servers. Not to the level that Balmung was, but much more than other servers. Right when WD came out, I had a 4 man and we hit it hard. There were more than enough other's hanging around the WD Pier for us to start a linkshell to discuss PvP tactics and form pre-mades. It was awesome for maybe 2-3 weeks! Then, queue times starting getting outrageous. The ranking system had something to do with that, because the DF purposely avoided matching a premade of level 20s against 4 random people that were all less than level 5, because of the obvious Morale stat advantage. People started getting discouraged.

The weeks rolled by, and people left the linkshell, or stopped logging in altogether. The "I was waiting for PvP in this game and it didn't deliver" crowd largely left. We actually had one of the best Warriors on our server at one point named Master Warrage. He would 1v3 teams, and made videos of him wrecking full wolves den teams by himself. SE took those videos down. He left the game. So the linkshell devolved into a group of people who were setting up full pre-mades. Two teams of 4 to queue on a French server for an insta-pop to just fight each other. This kept most of us occupied for another few weeks.

Then it got old only fighting against the same 7 people all....the.....time. The linkshell largely disbanded after a month or two, because the interest simply just wasn't there. I hit rank 29 with Twin Adder just playing Wolves Den. I switched to Flames with like 10 other people for Frontlines when it came out. Almost identical situation copy/pasted. Super popular for a week or two, then queue times just went to complete shit, and not worth devoting that much of your day's play time waiting in a queue.



tl;dr : I completely agree that FFXIV does not have the right type of playerbase to ever make PvP popular. Many people playing this game grew up on single-player fantasy experiences, not shooting each other in CoD. A very vocal minority won't change the fact that queues wouldn't need fixing, if the interest was just there at all.

I'm aware of what your idea was. I did read it. However, you are just wrong. I have been in FL (Secure) matches where we completely dominated both other teams and won in 8-9 minutes. The que is broken, I que a good 30 seconds after my wife and she gets in 2nd some times.

Or bam we get into one 24 and 72 within 2 mins of each other. Ya these 2 things don't happen often but they have happened.

Also, I would love to see a break down of how many from each city are currently in a queue. IE I queue up look at DF, and see 43/21/9 and and then see a count down timer with 24 man match will begin in X amount of time if a 48/72 isn't met by that time.

Right but then you are sitting in the Queue again after the 10 minute match. Even in the fixed 20 minute intervals you'd only have an 8 minute max wait after a quick match. 8 minute wait is still 3-4 times better then the current average.

Yes there is that extremely rare Saturday night where you get 4 matches in an hour but that is extremely rare.

It's been said time and time again amongst the people who do enjoy pvp: If they removed the GC restrictions not only would queues be faster but more people would be likely to queue if they know its not going to be a ridiculous wait. I would love to kill time in pvp when I don't have anything else to do. I would also love to queue with bros and just go ham. Whether our alliance wins or loses, getting in as a party with VoIP is fun as hell.

Maybe you personally aren't interested (judging from your crusade of "I don't care about pvp" posts), but there's still enough interest among the people who do. It also sounds like you're only thinking of wolves den, which I'll concede is not fun in any regard (all the people I know who participate in wolves den just do so to try and level grind). But I think at this point in the game 99% of the people who mention PvP are talking about frontlines.

The drastic drop in popularity soon after WD arrived did confuse me a little, because I figured that for people that enjoy PvP, it would provide something they want. But then I read about the pretty widespread abuse of win trading, and realized that for many WD was essentially a broken system about nothing more than a cynical grind for PvP vanity gear. I can only imagine how annoying this was for PvP players who enjoy PvP for what it is rather than simply another grind. I can well imagine many more serious players losing interest due to the win trading aspect of things.

This is exactly why nobody had any interest in Wolve's Den as far as I am concerned. The fact that in order to get a set of vanity gear you had to grind the same bland 4v4 matches with job restrictions for literally hundreds of hours in order to get it legitimately really turned me off. People shouldn't have to resort to things such as win trading because the grind is too long and the fact that people were exploiting the system that way really turned me off from the Wolve's Den pretty much completely.

PvP has been implemented very poorly in this game from every aspect. Wolve's Den had restrictions, gave terrible rewards and had tons of exploiters. Frontlines had GC restrictions which did nothing but increase the queue times and not allow people to play with friends, thereby making players less interested.

For PvP to work at all they really need to drop these types of restrictions and give more incentive, otherwise nobody is ever going to participate and in that case I would agree with you 100% that PvP is a waste of time for the devs.

CoD (and competitive multiplayer online games in general) did not even exist during these times. It has nothing to do with the playerbase at all.


Look, I think the main reason PvP is so polarizing in MMOs is because none of the skills you learned in PvE carry over. Healers don't have to run for their lives every second of a dungeon. Black Mages never thought they'd be using sleep so much. The enemies you attack run into the tank's face and you kill them, they don't sprint in circles and run behind walls and CC you for 20 seconds at a time before one-shotting you.

It's just too contrasting of an experience. So in that sense, until SE finds a way to actually incentivize PvE players to queue for the content it offers, i dont think it'll be popular. They'd have to add a mode where you do more than simply kill players.

I can level with you. The restrictions suck. But the restrictions being spoken of that apply to Wolves' Den were not there at its inception. They were put there literally because they had to be put there, for balancing in an already unbalanced aspect of the game.

1PLD +2DRG = multiple stun locking on healers/other DPS to allow quick dismantling of teams. INSANELY quick.

Any + 2BLM = same deal, except with sleep.

Stacking SMN = Baned DoTs + Tri-disasters everywhere.

Monks with lots of Morale? Watch your HP go bye-bye.

It was literally impossible to beat some of these set-ups for random teams. Anyone who coordinated a premade already had a clear advanatge which was exponentially compounded by the lack of restrictions to the 2DPS you could bring. Getting completely owned with no chance of survival drove more people, who might have given it a chance, away when they felt like they had no control over the match.

Just for the record, the only incentive I ever needed to PvP was the satisfaction I get from beating other players. I don't buy any of the outfits or gear any longer. I did when Morale was a thing, but only because they made gear a competitive edge in PvP. That is something that shouldn't ever be done, because people without the Morale gear had no chance of beating a team who did. I didn't grind out 200 FL wins for that mount because there are things I would rather do that don't take an hour each time I want to do them. The fact that the majority of players in the game need some kind of incentive to PvP, only proves what I've been trying to say this whole time....


There just isn't enough interest in the FFXIV community to ever make PvP relevant, no matter how much I would love for it to be so ;-;

lol most players aren't as hardcore as you though Jay, they don't want to do shit unless there is incentive. I get what you're saying but it wouldn't hurt to drop some restrictions and increase the rewards so it doesn't take hundreds of hours to get anything cool, and see what happens. SE already has the systems in place to do both of those things, it's just a matter of changing them.

Nothing is going to happen until 3.0 now I'm sure but since they plan to continue developing pvp content they should reflect on the poor implementation they had the first time.

Yeah, I can agree with this. I think most of us in this thread are looking for the same thing: PvP to actually be a thing lol. I guess my pessimistic side clouds my judgement.

We do need some change, and anything would be better than what is in place currently. I've always tried to view things with the purpose of seeing what's wrong with the idea in order for it to be altered to take that into effect. If anything at all could be done to inject some life into PvP, I'm for those changes.

What PvP need is a constant flow of players, mostly soloqueuing, in order to establish a solid PvP playerbase.

You won't get that simply by removing GC restriction (and destroying all of the lore attached to Carteneau at the same time).

The problem comes from the amount of time needed to be put into PvP to get anything of value, and that the rewards themselves are quite meh, besides a few set or armor made for glamour.
It's just like the Tank mount which was added to the game to make people play Tank more. It just didn't work at all, because the reward itself isn't -that- amazing and the process of getting it is way too grindy and boring. Exactly like PvP rewards.

Just look at the PvP Roulette. There is absolutly zero PvP rewards for doing that Roulette... just a bunch of tomestones. That's super lame, and with the current waiting time, nobody wan't to to it at least once a day.

GC restriction clearly isn't the core of the problem. It's just the tip of the iceberg that everyone sees because it's obvious.
Even if you remove it and can now "play with your friends", there will still be nothing but a grind waiting for you. You'll do half a dozen PvP games and then most of you will be done with it, going back to 30+ queues time.

The problem with GC restrictions is that it inhibits the queue times for solo queues as well though. Say you have 60 flames, 30 maelstrom, and 15 adders queued up. If there was no GC restriction the queue would pop, but because there is a restriction everybody waits and the additional flames who queued last wait even longer. People will eventually withdraw because the queue is taking so long and then you're back to square one.

I agree that it only fixes part of the problem because there still isn't a lot of incentive in terms of rewards from pvp. Grind hundreds of hours, get some really cool glamour gear (if you happen to even play a job with cool gear, some of it is terrible) and maybe a mount or two.

The problem with GC restrictions is that it inhibits the queue times for solo queues as well though. Say you have 60 flames, 30 maelstrom, and 15 adders queued up. If there was no GC restriction the queue would pop, but because there is a restriction everybody waits and the additional flames who queued last wait even longer. People will eventually withdraw because the queue is taking so long and then you're back to square one.

That's correct and is a bigger problem than "I can't queue with my friends".

In the end, it all comes down to the number of people queuing and the repartition between GCs.

If you look at the lasted stats given by SE, all 3 company were fairly well populated, with only the Maelstorm being a bit behind.
So, even if a situation like the one you described would happen, it would probably be temporary (I mean, I don't see why the members of a certain CG wouldn't be less inclined to PvP than others).

Again, even if a GC has less player than the others, with a healthy PvP playerbase, this problem would not be as important as it sounds like.

PvP needs better rewards. Better incentive to be played.
Just look at The Hunt. It's crappy content, not interesting, not challenging, full of bad behaviors and so on... but people are still doing it. Why? Because the rewards are awesome, which overcomes the badness that is Hunting.

It's quite simple, really. SE just need to give a reason for people to want to go in PvP frequently beyond of the "PvP itself", and most issues will be solved that way.
After that, we can then think about getting more maps, more modes and finally getting rid of GC restriction while trying to keep the lore intact.

As to pvp not popular, I had a friend today wait 2hrs for low level rouletteeanwhile I popped 3 frontlines. GC restriction is the main problem, a lot of people unwilling to try this out solo. I've introduced PvP to various friends who have switched GC to try it out and have loved it, the que system is also a major issue with 0 info of how many per gc there are queing plus its brokenness, you can get trapped in a que of let's say 8/8/4 seeking but if a spot is clear in a fl going on already you will not fill that spot, instead you have to reque to get this

Rewards as well are pretty stupid, in a game that basically allows you to 1-50 in a day with ridiculous xp rewards from challenge log or leves or daily roulette bonus, it seems pvp doesnt have an real help. Its taken me 4 months of pvping to finally reach rank 38, but so glad o reached this

I wish instead of Wolf's Den or Frontlines and all the effort put into it, they had given us a simple PVP duel system. Just a simple "Hey! I challenge you!" would have been great, would have scratched the pvp itch some folks have, and would have freed resources up that are now tied to the whole PVP mess.

Last night: 34minute wait for my first match. 13 minutes for my second.

That was on a Friday night which is the second busiest PvP night each week. (Sat is first)

I like the idea!
There are still lots of glamour pieces I want from pvp, but the queuetimes make me sad.
I managed the grind to 40 with 1hr+ queuetimes, and got most of the glamours I want. So now I don't really feel like theres a point in queueing.
I think pvp is the only aspect in this game thats fun (pre-slaughter, it really killed pvp) but I don't think its worth it to spend 30-60 min to have fun 10-15 mins.

PvP requires skill in FFXIV, like many things, That's why I like it, and that's why many people just gives up...

THE OP IS TOTALLY RIGHT! The GC restriction must, MUST be removed, we don't mind whatever stuff you have to do to the PvP ranks related with the GC, or the lore... Make it just so it is a tournament organized by adventurers guild for training, whatsoever, we NEED a better queue, the GC restriction is a mess.
