I don't know... this is the norm on JP servers, probably because it's easier than typing a a name in romaji. So it doesn't bother me. If someone has a long or weirdly spelled name, it's annoying.
i can understand with long names or difficult names, but I've been called "bard" rather than my character's name, which isn't hard to spell or pronounce, often enough and had enough bad experiences related to situations involving it that it does get on my nerves.
I think it is just people looking at the job rather than the players name, I wouldn't put much thought into this.
Same here. Sounds like the person is talking about you, but not with you, enforcing the fact that he/she doesn't have a good opinion of you. I always take the time to look at party mates' names, and if you don't care enough to call me by my name, I won't care to give my commendation to someone else...
For JP servers, I think it may be an extension of how people interact in real life. We often call professional people by their job when we don't have any personal connection with them... so it's not considered offensive.
I've never been in a DF party with English speakers who used party chat, so not sure there.
I have been known to do it. I keep my party name plates off (the ones above heads) and in instances don't like to glance at the party list so I don't have to worry about missing a telegraph
I try not to do it but I understand that it is easier to spot the job of someone than their name (especially for 4-man duties). Thus, I do not get offended when I am called whm or healer (or whatever I am playing).
However, I remember back in 2.1 when Pharos Sirius was people's nightmare and we just got it, someone said right away "Does our healer know at least what to do?" and I got offended first because it was a 3rd person question and second because it is not that hard to read what Siren's debuff does on first try <__<".
In party names are off for me. In a pug, I often don't know the names. It's also obnouxiously annyoing that cast bars ruin the party hud, you can't see the name for a second or two.
It doesn't bother me at all when someone refers to me with <job name>. I always try to check someone's name but sometimes you need to be really fast and job name is the better option. Not to mention some people might have, for me, weird names.
to me is not annoying to be honest, as I prefer to be called by my job then see my name written totally wrong or shorten that annoys me more. Besides some names are so dumb to write that is almost impossible to memorize it and when you play and are the middle of a fight and need something form bard, and that one is called, zhgtdheztgvdb (example of course), you are faster in typing BARD then that name that I showed....
So yeah even if annoying is less annoying then my name written wrong...lol
Between the two evils, take the lesser one...

OP this is the behaviour in every MMO. People in party usually refer to people by their roles. It happened all the time in WoW and no doubt it happened in other MMOs as well.
Which is why it annoys me. Again, I have begun to connotate this behavior over the years with people who are exceptionally unpleasant to be around. Therefore, it annoys me.
It just so happens that tonight was...a rather unpleasant circumstance.
I'd also like to bring awareness that this does irritate some people, despite how common it is. There CAN be a time and place for it, but it gets ridiculous. Makes me feel like I'm going to get told to put the lotion on my skin or else I get the hose again.
I hate it "drg can you not stun" snorts a tank or whatever, and it just gets my back up.
I have a name, don't even mind if there's a typo when you call it me.
The only times i refer to some as job name is when im trying to say something quick, i.e during titan the otherday i was tanking, noticed ninja wasnt attacking the stone (healer trapped) even though i signed it 1.
I have entered a few dungeons to get hi tank, which i response hi dps. I generally find we a have quite a bit fun and people chat at least its not silence D:
Might be faster in those instances to just type <#> (replacing # with the party members position on the list) and what you wanna say. "<2> can you sing me a song please?" With the Bard being in the #2 slot on your party list. It's how I do it and is working well so far.
Sounds like special snowflake syndrome. I've seen tons of players shorten names, though, so I don't see how this is an issue for the TC.
Unless you're in a group of people you communicate with often, it's just gonna happen. Nobody is gonna take the time to type your name in quick situations.
This is why you name your character something that can get a nickname easily for people or at least be typed easily.
I've played WoW for years before finally quitting and moving onto FFXIV. Honestly, I don't care what strangers call me. It is just a title and they are strangers to me. It would almost be weirder for them to call you by name because all you say at the start of dungeon is, "hello" "hey" "hi" "Nice to meet you" "Let's go" etc. You do not have a huge introduction introducing yourself to other players unless you RP in every DF group.
It would be different if it was a RP run.
I try to use names or short versions of it but gotta admit that at times due to lazyness/a general bad vision I do not read name and use the job name or for duties where you registered name at start but forget in heat of battle and its sth that really has to happen FAST same thing i say "drg u need to...." or simple for bards the usual "MP" "TP" msg in chat and dont think my friends or randoms mind that i adress em randomly like that.
(Or my lovely "PET" msg for my friends in T5 :P)
I generally prefer to use names (I will shorten the long ones because I'm not the quickest typist). I understand the reason for this but it does feel impersonal and as soon as somebody cools me "Healer" part of me starts prefering for them to be dickish should I make a mistake. Which trows me off my game a little. WHM also feels impersonal but is at least the most expedient way to get my attention.
That said, while I try to be friendly in DF, if you call me Zul (or Zulaster but honestly it's an unusual name and doesn't come as naturally when typing, so I'd never expect that) you've just made a friend for the duration of the Duty.
Calling by job/role bugs me as it's impersonal and lends a business-like air the run. If everyone uses names it tends to improve cameraderie in my experience. The best Duty runs for me are the ones where we chat and joke as we go (not just because they have a fun atmosphere but because communication improves competency) and I can't recall seeing that in a group where we're using job/role instead of name. That may just be my experience though.
They do it in Maoyuu maou yuusha and no characters complained :o
I dont care, either way is fine by me XD but what i thought the momment i read your post was... "well it happens in every single game with a character with a title" like dragonborn, chosen undead etc. so some people might just be used to do that.
but what you think is annoying can also be the most reasonable for other people, some people might get a little annoyed if someone just started calling them by name so they use their ocupation as it is more respectful in their eyes.
some times the pplayer has hidden all names so he wouldnt know, maybe the person saw say 1 of the 2 whitemages do something or whatever but couldnt see the name of the one who did it so he just calls the job.
and of course some doesnt use the name because they dont want to be friendly, just want to be direct/agressive.
I imagine most of the times people use it without the intent to offend, so unless you are pretty sure it is an offense like " Black mage u suk" or whatever, why take offense?
people who uses this most likely dont know you and you dont know them, so in these kind of situation i think it is like when i casually talk with someone on the street, i dont call them by their names even if they tell me theirs, i call them sir, miss, mr, ms etc, the bus driver even if he has his name on the badge i wont call him by name, i will call him driver so he is sure i am talking to him.
in this case, if people are calling you by your job and you dont like it, just say you would rather be refered by name/nickname or just reply by calling them their jobs as well.
My favourites are when people shout things like "FRONT DPS GET KEY!!", it's so much of a joke in fact, that my fiancée and I often shout things like that at each other when we PT with 1-2 people who've been scooped up by the DF. We get some weird looks at first, but people understand soon enough and have a good laugh.
In all seriousness though... Use people's names, don't be rude. It's not hard. In almost all cases, names can be abbreviated to 3-4 characters, which requires no more effort than calling someone "tank" or "BLM", yet the level of civility and respect that are retained in doing so... Very worthwhile and does not go unnoticed.
People call me Arc or Arch all the time, whether they actually know me personally or not matters little. I'm a player not an NPC.
Like others have said it often depends on the tone associated with it. That said... I've found that most often the tone associated with someone using a job/class as an identifier instead of a name or shortening it's often not in a kind tone.
Talking "about" someone instead of "to" someone really makes it bad.
Personally, I prefer using someone's name or at least a short version of it.
Please, call me "Sir Paladin Fyce Alvey" from now on. Uppercases included.
I have a full name and I'm a Paladin.
I will be highly offended if you just call me "tank".
So, yes, in the middle of the action, I'll ask you to look away from the fight, search for my job icon in the party list, look at my name, start typing it (fully), look again to see if there is no mistake, and then type your sentence. I will call you out and start an argument if you don't. And probably report you to the GMs for being offensive.
I don't care if you die while doing all of this. I'm a player, not an NPC. I have to right to be respected.
I'll votekick you is you say "tank plz go in the back of the room".
/sarcasm
I typically only call people by their class if we're in the middle of a fight and looking to type out someones name could be a little distracting especially the long ones XD.
But I get what you mean, if it's in a normal conversation it's a little rude but I've only ever seen people say it during a fight
I call players by their jobs unless there are more than 1 of said job. Had a few people get really pissy at me for doing such. No reason to get pissy lol. Just because we are partying together doesn't mean we have to be friends, just means we have a common objective. If you're kind then it is another sub-topic, but getting pissy over it is stupid. Love seeing them get pissed when I tell them to earn their name
I can get that it makes it feels impersonal, but understand that it's usually much more easier and faster to type PLD/tank rather than the person's name. If you're 'offended' by someone calling you by your job name then please try to relax.
I often see people with long and complicated names, and let's be honest most of the time when you need to address someone directly in an instance it's in a fight or a 'fuckwedying' situation, (telling them to move, or a certain mechanic)
Those people will probably never see you again in their gaming life so you really shouldn't feel anger when it happens :/
I tend to call people by their character name if we are not in a fight and if it's not a freaking long and complicated name, but as mnk or healer i don't really have the time to make sure X name is typed correctly. I personally prefer people to call me MNK rather than they misspell my character name.
I always try to call people by their names. The only exception is when I explain mechanics, since I talk about job roles and not people.
Since we are mostly talking about suggesting play adjustments, I will use names and jobs in different situations. Admittedly its mostly reflexive and unconciuos.
When someone is playing a role that has a specific job to do for a boss fight or a group of trash, I will use the job. So, like in old-school WP runs I would start pulling a ton of mobs after the second boss and say, "BLM LB at top of stairs."
When someone is just playing horribly (terrible rotation, not hold enmity as tank, bad healer stuff), I will use the name. Since it is their issue, not the job's.
When I do pick up raids for new content and I am using VOIP, I will only use the person's actual name after I get to know them a little bit. If I am running with 4 people from my static and 3 people from a different static that I don't really know, I just don't have the confidence to know that I am getting their name correct with their voice. So I will say things like "DRG take that orb, I'll back off."
Tip: You can auto-enter to someone's name by targeting them and using <t>.
I always call by name (or shortened name), unless I'm explaining job-specific mechanics.
Context, context~
I call people by their job unless I know them or there are multiple of their job.
It's much easier to look at the icon and type 3 letters during a fight than fumbling with trying to type out a (often long and complicated) name.
Auto-translate bro! So much faster.
"bar-" tabb = {Bard}
I also use initials on party list. *shrug*
Unless talking about roles, I try to use names/shortened/nicknames when talking to the party. Gives the party a more friendly atmosphere...most of the time.
*remembers slight kerfuffle during Mogglemog EX*
I don't call people by their name unless I know them.
I am as polite as I can be in dungeons, but will say something like "melee LB please" or "Healer, the tank is new. Could you please help by watching your own aggro?" JP parties will use the job label for instructions. I don't have any problem with this.
Depends. If it's in the middle of a fight, it's no big deal; we have more important things to worry about than a name. If it's general instructions for roles, no big deal either. Otherwise I find it definitely demeaning, but I don't see it often and hardly respond to the people that won't take a second to treat me as more than an NPC.
I'll call you by name if we have time, but if someones screws up in the middle of the fight I have other things to do that type your name, drg or brd works just as well.
Probably would find it offensive if slip ups are happening and someone refers to you as your job... kinda reaffirming to you *what* your job is and that you need to do it better. However in almost every circumstance that person ends up eating their words so i just laugh them off.
if you are called by your job and dont like it, you always have the choice not to listen to it, and if you are called out, you can innocently say if it was you that the question/mention/insult was directed to...I do that at times...is just fun to suddenly feel the silence LOL
small story :
Communication using jobs as a name can be confusing,
T5, SCH and WHM,
WHM says to SCH, that he will take care of the MT, so SCH focus on OT, goes well, we wipe, instruction stands right ? MT change, aka prvious MT becomes OT, but WHM still takes scare of MT since nothing was said otherwise...only the WHM wanted to say that he would take care of player X who happened to play the MT, so obviously since player X changed from MT to OT, the WHM would take care of OT now..guess what...MT died...there was a moment of dumbness there from WHM part, when he realized that using the name would have been ...a better choice
Communication is all..wrong communication is fast a problem...
