At this point, all we know about the expansion with any certainty is that it will be 3.0.
As for any other details.... Please look forward to it.
I'd venture to guess it'll need to be bought.
You most likely wont have to buy it
This will be an expansion not an update. If SE follows their normal practice then there will be a charge for it. They usually run between $10 and $20. By the same token there will be a great deal more content then with a normal update.
My guess is more than likely it'll have to be bought, but probably won't be much. All of FFXI's expansions were like $20.
If it follows the same model as FFXI and with it's expansions it may have to be bought...or it may be free, we will surely know before it is released.
Every MMO I have ever played... an expansion was something purchased.
I am betting it has to be bought and installed/downloaded - depending if you decide to buy the actual disk or go the electronic way.
It's gonna be bought for sure. Likely will either have to buy the physical copy or pay for a code to unlock the content. If SE is smart they will simply charge for the unlock code and offer the expansion data as a free download.
It will most likely be a paid expansion ~$30.00-40.00 like most MMO expansion packs. As far as content, there have been several times when the dev team said that 3.0 will be about as big as 2.0 was at launch content wise. So it will be pretty big. Not only in content, but we will also get new classes I'm sure we will see at least a new tank and healer type. Maybe even the much rumored "hybrid" classes.
We will also see a level cap increase, so expect to see at least 1/2 the new dungeon content aimed at level 50+, as well as a new endgame progression.
Last couple expansions for FFXI were digital only so I expect them to do the same for FFXIV.
You mean the add ons? A Crystaline Prophecy, A Moogle Kupo d'etat, and A Shantotto Ascensian? Those were just little addons, not expansions. I have a disc for every expansion except Seekers, since stopped playing right before it came out. So unless you mean the mini-add ons, yes those were digital only.
The way I see it release - buy, uses that money to fund development of the expansion which you again buy... etc... patches in between get funded off of the sub fees.
As far as i remember that comment was made concerning 1.0 players and the fact that when upgrading to the 2.0 client that it would be provided free of charge instead of having to purchase the game a second time, Any expansions following that however are likely going to require players to purchase them.
In addition considering the WoD expansion for WoW is priced at $49.99 U.S. for the standard edition or $69.99 U.S. for the digital deluxe edition, i wouldn't be surprised if SE followed a similar model.
I'd bet on $30 like FFXI expansions usually were. It'll probably be hard to find a physical copy this day and age, but they'll probably make them at least, possibly some super ultra deluxe ones! Most people will probably get the digital (or digital deluxe -- comes with a minion!) version.
Usually the way this works is that new areas and classes are bundled into the expansion (and as such all story/ dungeons/ etc. in those areas) while things like the level cap increase, job tweaks, and any additions in current areas are accessible with just the update that goes live at the same time.
hope SE make digital cheaper >.>
physcal copy 30$
digital only 25$
I guess it will be charged but not much. In my country you can find FFXIV for PC at 12 euros in stores. It's really cheap. They made this game cheap in order to bring more people to it. I don't think they will charge 40 and 50 euros/dollars for the expansion. There is a high chance it will be a free update though I'm not expecting this. It will be a pleasant surprise. Considering how much big the 3.0 will be I bet it will be a charge. Time will tell as we know nothing about it just yet.
It is much less likely for major retailers to buy in stock for a physical product, if the consumer can get a reduced fee version digitally. As for many consumers a small fee like that matters, retailers will be forced to cut down on their profit margin on the product in order to reach sales. As major retailers don't favor minimal profit margins, it is much more likely they'll pass on selling the expansion in that case.
Through the Mog station and a digital download, the same way most other MMOs do.
Blizzard has Battle.net, and Guild Wars has their own website that allows you to purchase and download full digital editions of their games / expansions in WoW's case.
For Ps3/4 the game could easily be offered via digital download on PSN much like the base game already is.
People tend to forget that (especially for MMOs) we're already well beyond the need for physical distribution for a genre that already requires you to have an active internet connection.
For the record my PC client for FFXIV was from the direct digital upgrade they offered to 1.0 players, so the only physical PC copy i own is my 1.0 disc floating around somewhere.
Shut up fizzie! lol...i can't help i gave i wishy washy response, everything is just speculation right now, nobody knows if it will be free or not(pretty sure it's not going to be free tho..that's just me personally!), this is all in a silly joking manner so yeah.../sticks tongue out at fizzie! XD
