So...what videos should I be watching?

I made my first attempt at Turn 5 last night. It went about as predictably as a run with a new WHM unaccustomed to the battle did (we made it to phase 3!). They knew it was me unexperienced, and told me I should've watched a video on the fight. Joke's on them! I did watch a video a few times!

They then proceeded to ask me whose video I watched, and before I answered, someone commented that the video I watched was bad. :( That guy worked for all the other battles I did...

Anyways, they told me a name to watch and I politely said I'd leave so they could get someone better. Unfortunately, I got wrapped up in other stuff and I forgot.

So whose videos should I be watching for info, if the first one on my Youtube search wasn't the right one?

Short, sweet, and to the point. Breaks down each phase in less than ten minutes. I also see that you are on Cactuar so if you ever need help clearing it, I'm usually available. :)

MTQCapture is a good source of concise and helpful guides that teach you the things you need to know going in.

Unlike a Youtuber that I won't name who caused many a Mog HM wipe back in the day with the incredibly helpful advice of "Ignore Moogle-Go-Round cuz I never saw it".

Agreed - doing and seeing is different, but videos (good videos) help out a lot with positioning. I wager the first thing anyone asks when going is "where do I stand/where do I run" versus "when should I pop this cd"

Ja as mentioned before, MTQ Capture has good guide videos. The videos are typically short and to the point with minimal fluff, and good information. Speaking of fluff they do have cats in that FC, but they're still ok.

I always watch the one from some british dude, Duno his name but his seem very detailed and simple to follow.

Heh I always go in blind for the first time - atleast if it's with people I know. Frankly have never had a video help me much(no matter from whom). But I am willing to watch a video if doing something for the first time with an unknown group. So far it helped me 0/N times.

But I must say I enjoy Mizzteqs(MTQcapture) the most. I'll usually watch multilpe guides if I am trying to figure out the fight fully because so far noone ever explained all the mechanics that happen and why you should deal with them in a certain way.

Yeah I like the MTQCapture ones too, watched the Turn 7 video the other night and felt very comfortable MT'ing it for the first time with zero experience.

I would personally prefer to go in blind, and learn on the go (with some explanation from experienced players), but that requires like minded and patent players, which are few and far between in the PF, and DF these days.

I personally watch this video before raiding. It contains very valuable advice.

I find it highly amusing that this generation is so obsessed with videos. Back in my day, we read text guides and did just fine. There's no substitute for experience though, no matter what that group wanted to blame on you. I've found that often, the ones who shout the loudest, are the ones most in need of guidance.

And for some reason Turn 5 brings out the worst in people. Just keep at it. That's what I'm doing, and one day I will get that golden group of people who wont ragequit after 1 wipe and that understand the concept of progression raiding.

watching a video can only get you so far, experiencing the mechanics of a fight and learning them first hand is what counts.
When learning, a healthy dose of situational awareness and adaptability will help too.

There are ins and outs that a video just wont show you, i watch videos of coil and ex primals so i can get a basic understanding before heading in, but those players that say "watch a video" and then expect you to be perfect first time, well those players are to be avoided.

Some people learn better from seeing an example then acting out the example they saw (IE a video).

Other people learn better by reading something and then executing what they read when they recognize it (IE reading a guide).

Different people have different learning styles, who knew?

Also strats shown in a video may not click with your party, so you end up developing your own, as we did with double def towers on t8 and DBs on t9.

It's still highly amusing, nonetheless. The obsession with "Go watch a youtube video" has ushered in an era of elitism that I've never seen before. This is one of the worst playerbases in the history of the FF mmo. You'd never hear someone rage in a group because someone didn't spend an hour scouring youtube to learn a fight beforehand in the old days. There may have been some scuffles here and there, but every single group I've been in here has had the same attitude, and at least once a week there's a post on the forums from a player who is just trying to play and enjoy the game.

@ Souljacker: Using Turn 5 as an example a video is useful in that case as most new people have trouble with conflags and divebombs and a good video will show you what the icon looks like and what the sound effect sounds like so it will be easier to pick out. A lot of stuff goes on during that fight so knowing exactly what to look out for can help quite a bit.

Most people that prefer to go in blind tend to stick with like-minded people, I've found. I never look up info on the coil turns past the one we are currently on and when we clear the current one I like to go in blind with the group to see what it's like and get the cutscenes out of the way, then look up information for attempts after that.

I'm going to start off by saying that I respect him for taking the time and effort to make his guides to help new players. That said, his videos are excessively long and verbose. Multiple people in this thread mentioned MTQcapture, go watch her videos and compare them to Mr. Happy's and you'll see the exact same information in half the time. On top of that, his tactics for clearing fights is sometimes ... questionable, which is likely due to rushing out the guide as soon as possible before the fight has been fully analyzed from all points. You'll also have the hardcore min-maxers say he's a terrible bard in his videos but I personally don't pay attention to that.

Mr. Happy's guides are the kind that you either hate or you like, there's no in-between.

I don't know.. I watch a video a couple times to get an idea about end game encounters but like someone mentioned, I need hands on experience to eventually accomplish it. I think Mr. Happy himself acknowledges the fact he is rather long winded but for all intent and purposes his video shows exactly what I want, the encounter itself.

His information is often outdated, or only works in very specific scenarios or teams. The long explanations do not do himself any justice, in that regard. He also has a habit of brute-forcing certain methods by simply over-DPSing, which is not always a viable solution. He either doesn't discuss, or glazes over alternative methods.

On topic:

I'd offer a different solution, OP. Read, as opposed to watch, to start. Understand the mechanics inside and out, as opposed to just trusting what someone tells you. Only refer to videos after completely understanding a writeup, in order to get positioning down. Watching videos makes it really easy to forget information or specific issues, because they are fed to you so quickly, so they shouldn't be the only source. Reading allows you to understand at your pace better than someone physically telling you something. This is just like school, where some people learn better through someone telling them, or reading on their own, or taking notes, etc.

As others have said, just practicing is the absolute best, as you will learn what works for you and your team.

• I'm a very Active player, so whenever possible I learn fights on my own when they first come out / gossip with other players about how to do things better to get ahead / develop our own stategies.

That being said, this is all coming from he guy whose been clearing T9 for what, 3 months now, and has never survived an entire fight (just as a lowly OT ta boot)

Since the first time we got to DB stage in T9, we cleared it. I get minimal practice time on that phase, that's m excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Last week, I died @2% b/c I assumed that I wanted to run the opposite direction from the first person with DB, I got 2nd DB marker . . . and I was wrong. Since My Group is putting down waypoints for me I have no real excuse, other than I go too comfortable and haven't reall learned the DB positioning properly as I'm trying to DPS as my WAR as much as possible.

I always watch both MTQCapture and Mr. Happy's visual guides. It's also good to read a written guide, as they break down the mechanics even better sometimes.

Come prepared but be ready to die, as nothing will teach you better than experience.

If you don't watch a guide, you're probably going to cause a very early wipe though! And then one of two things can happen.

1. Someone is going to yell at you for not knowing the basic mechanics of an encounter and tell you to read a guide. For good reason, mind you.
2. Someone is going to be nice and patient enough to explain to you something that you could have just googled and found out for yourself.

When you are "going in blind because its fun" you are doing it with seven other people who might not feel the same as you. If you are doing it with friends then its whatever, I've gone in blind to ScoB with friends and it was hilarious. But the information is right at your fingertips! Use it, abuse it!

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. :D Truth be told, I hate watching the videos for things. My learning style is just to do it, make tweaks as necessary, and hope for occasional advice. I've heard the horror stories about T5, so decided to see if I could pick up even a little bit of info beforehand.

Why does everyone keep quoting me as If I advocated for not doing any preparatory research at all? I merely expressed amusement at the need to "see" someone else do something as opposed to reading "When you have a red triangle over your head, run to the soak team".

In fact - I believe that short notes as a reminder of mechanics is far better than trying to memorize a 20 minutes fight through youtube. This generation likes it. I get it.

That doesn't mean you should beat someone over the head with it as if it is guaranteed to prevent a group from wiping or something.

That and Titan EX. Titan EX is turning into a nightmare for me in DF. I should prob transition into PF now that I know enough of the fight.

Only thing videos are useful for is to iron out the kinks and to have some foreknowledge of the fight. Know where to stand, what are the 1 shot mechanics, what are the debuffs that you need watch out for, etc. I prefer too also go in blind for a few runs but lately I been watching videos cause I do alot of my runs in DF and yeah, if you start going in blind your gonna get kicked real quick.

As far as who to watch, watch all of them. mrhappy, mtq, and other random on youtube give you the full flavor of the fight.

Many videos exist for all turns of Savage Coil that you can use as a basis for building your strategy since many groups have cleared them now. Turn 8 for example, you can watch Turn 8 Savage and map out every tower and the order of mechanics and also see how that particular group chose to proc the towers.

I don't understand your post, because videos are still used aside from those first true crusaders (the JP group who cleared everything first and then posted the video). Basically every Savage clear (with the exception of Turn 6) since the JP group has been based on their kill video, or inspiration was drawn from it in some way.

In practice, this is true. Even after watching a video people will typically still make mistakes and need to be reminded of how a mechanic works or where they need to be for it. I, personally, watch videos as I feel it's my responsibility as the tank to know the encounters and not cause too many immediate wipes - of course if no guides are out, I'll wing it (I will say that it's waaaay more fun to go in blind. Everything's a surprise and you have to stay on your toes). My boyfriend, on the other hand, never watches guides and manages to learn any fight as the mechanics happen around him. He has never caused a wipe.

So, all in all, I'd say do what you feel comfortable with. If feeling out fights works better for you than watching videos, more power to you.
