Just curious as to who likes going into new fights with no idea what's going on. Me personally I don't like being an MP sponge so I read up on it or watch a video so I have an idea of what to do.
What about you guys?

If it's brand new content I love going in to it fresh, if it has been out a while I will read up on it a bit.
God, no. Do you know what kind of injury and health risks that has?
If it's dungeons, yes, that's the fun of doing it with a small FC who wants to try out new things.
For Raids / Primals, no, because I know we're gonna be spending a lot of time learning the fight, and the less "I need to learn", the faster we can get that boss down to 0%
After updates when content is brand new I like going in completely raw. If it's been out for a while I do research, usually asking friends who have cleared it before to explain. Videos don't help me because if my run doesn't go exactly as the video did, my brain goes "Hrrrrrrnnnnngggg" and I get stressed. If I have general instructions my brain doesn't go into "This is just like what we saw" mode and it works out fine. :P
I always go in blind.
Yes, because I'm one of those that simply cannot retain a damn thing from almost any video of this sort. I need to see the stuff with my own eyes, in person.
this sums it up although saying that i went into titan EX raw after mr happy posted his "guide" that everyone used like a holy text XD
the only times i don't read up is when its a all FC group or a group of my friends and i ask for no move spoilers and have a hell of a lot of fun figuring out mechanics even if they are slightly old :D
I like going into fights fresh and new ^o^ for me it adds to the mystery of things and I like learning by doing and going "ooooh so THAT'S how this works!" I'm not afraid to ask questions though, but I like being surprised.
Like others I will go in fresh if it is brand new content otherwise I tend to scour the net for strats and videos to be ready. As I usually tank, I find it helpful to have a baseline of what I should be doing.
It really depends on the type of fight. I jumped into Garuda EX, Levi EX, Ramuh EX, and T6 all completely blind, but I've studied up on the rest of the fights (for example, I would never jump into Titan EX blind).
Dungeons aren't really hard enough to justify watching a guide on, and even if everyone in the party is new it usually only costs at most one or two wipes to clear the entire thing.
As long as you pay attention and learn quickly, you should be able to catch the mechanics in a few tries.
I love learning new fights :D I'm always keen to play on patch day so that not having a clue is the norm and people don't try to explain the fights of ST/CT/new dungeons to me. But, I'm the same as a few people above in not wanting to do Coil/EX Primals without having a look at them first. I don't find it ruins Coil at all since watching the mechanics and actually dealing with them are two very different things for me :P
i pretty much despise reading/watching guides
my ADD kicks into hyperdrive when someone can't just simplify an entire fight explanation for me. I hate things that are needlessly complicated or are not succinct/concise.
I go in without studying beforehand even if the content has been out for a while... but I pretty much only do new content with my friends because I don't want to get in the way for people I don't know.
At most, someone may give me very general advice about boss fights -- like "make sure to kill the adds quickly" but that's about all.
After doing it a few times I might start to read guides, but that's only so I will be more proficient at it before trying it in DF.
No guide in the world has the power to help those with tunnel vision and a slow brain.
I like goin in not knowing what to expect. So I always use the duty finder, and I never join parties through PF if I don't know the fight.
A lot of times ppl are gonna leave (the tank is gonna leave...) when I tell them im new but I don't care. If they wanted an experienced group they got PF.
Currently working on getting Moggle Ex down through DF and on my first try we actually got to the last phase, but I've only got to it one time.
But it doesn't matter I like having a goal and even if we wipe I'm gonna keep trying til I get there!
I usually like some <Protect>ion when going in raw.
On a more serious note, I prefer to have some idea of what I'm getting into so that there is less of a chance that I'll be the cause of a wipe. I don't enjoy dying several times trying to complete content. I do content to actually complete it, and dying repeatedly is not fun to me.
Edit: Specifically this refers to things like Primal Fights and Coil.
I don't mind going into normal dungeons blind, they're just dungeons and as such typically aren't that hard to begin with.
Virgin dungeons are a joy to enter... Just charge in and see what happens.
One battle in particular I went into with completely no knowledge was Ultima HM. It was so much fun to learn and easy to pickup what to do on various phases. Other more complex fights I have researched before even stepping in (Second Coil)
Dungeons I like to go in not knowing anything, especially early on in patches. Primals and raids though, nope. No fun at all for me personally to go in blind, and I'd feel like a burden and just have zero enjoyment.
and I can't stand it when I'm asked to explain a primal ex fight or a raid :/ especially when someone demands a clear explanation. If someone is too lazy to look up something, they might as well expect me to be too lazy to explain that very same thing to them. So I just give a short summary and hope for the best.
Always raw.
My party goes into new content "fresh" for like 1 wipe just to laugh on the first new mechanic wipe then we go online to learn the mechanic. This is not a single player game, MMOs are designed to have content that takes an unreasonable amount of time to discover the patterns of for the sake of prolonging content, so online guides are just a way around artifical roadblocks. If you aren't looking up the mechanics online, someone in your party is and relaying the info to you unless you're in Blue Gartr, so you aren't discovering the mechanics yourself anyways and should get off your high horse.
Depends on how many adventurers have been inside the content beforehand.
If it's snow pure, of course! Nothing like the first time.
One or two, sure, content is still probably good for raw exploration, I'll risk it.
Four and up, always make sure to use some sort of protection...in the form of video guides.
/nothingawkwardhere
For four man content I generally try to run it blind with FC or LS people but if i'm relying on pugs i'll watch a vid first because alot of the people you meet in duty finder are not people you want to spend alot of time with I seem to struggle getting people to say hello nowadays.
For 8 man and above I always watch a vid some of those mechanics are not obvious and would take way too long to figure out blind, besides as a tank I feel kinda responsible I am meant to lead the way after all.
Yes, but wearing a condom.
Id much prefer to go in blind and figure things out, you know, how one usually plays and beats game content. Unfortunately MMO's are the only genre where its noraml and even expected to 'cheat' using guides and what not. Its not even considered cheating with the players, they call it "learning" the fights, lol. If I were to read a guide on say The Last of Us, FFXIII or any other type of game id feel pretty stupid in the end. Not MMO's! Nope, and if you dont read/watch guides for MMO's... everyone else makes sure you feel "pretty stupid" for not cheating. And the worst part of all this is MMOs are just about the easiest @#^$ing games to play.
..... /sigh
Depends.
When going with FC we usually try new fights without any info and read up as needed.
I, for my part, read up on new content when going with randoms.
For that purpose I prefer compact overviews of tactics/mechanics, to get an impression of what to expect, and figuring out the details and how to best handle situations during the fights.
Long tactic explanations and detailed information or videos are too much information at once.
Even watching a group beat, for example, Titan EX 100 times, won't get you anywhere when you first try it yourself.
You know what they say. "It's not a party until someone dies."
Without risk of death there would be no sense of achievement for your victory, and therefore no-fun. Wiping to new content is extremely enjoyable and part of any true game's experience.
^ So to answer the question: Yes, I enjoyed Titan rocking my world hundreds of times for each tier when it was fresh. Both in PUGs and with my static team. *It just made the final victory that much sweeter.
The first one or two times I enter a new fight(through DF) I always go in blind, adds to the excitement and joy of new content. If there's something I don't understand after a couple of tries, or I keep dying, I will ask advice or look up the fight. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the mechanics on my own though.
My FC and i went into turn 6 blind last night. It was very amusing.
I'm not big on the guides myself. I much prefer the holy crap what was that moment of new fights. Sure, if i keep failing repeatedly on a certain mechanic, i'll ask for some advice, or i'll hit 'ol google up to figure out that particular part.
TL;DR - Raw - yep!
I read brief written guides, no videos; would prefer everything blind, but as a healer I feel I have a duty not to wipe everyone by missing a key mechanic. Currently catching up on main story and looking forward to being first into new content when it comes out!
I love walking in blind, and learning fights myself, the only fights I have watched a video for is Garuda Ex and Twintania, everything else I have done completely blind, if you can get a likeminded group these are so much fun, wiping, working out why you wiped and you progress more than following a video guide, because it's easier to learn doing it rather than watching it.
Hardest part for me is knowing what can be done blind and what can't. Most dungeons I did and it went fine as long as there was one person there who could give tips. But it is also sad when you join something that is ridiculously confusing and you end up feeling you let the entire party down because SE had not warned that the following content was too hard without watching videos first.
i love to find the trick and gimmick of the boss, then, generally i tend to not check video or guide... and when i check it, i simply check the type of attack, i think i'm clever enough for find a counter-mesure for most of the mechanic used in FF14 so far, nothing really hard. but well i have a huge passive of raiding behind me.
note, the only mechanic that have let me out was the dive and twister of twin, mostly because they are artificially harder to figure by beind invisible! and i think a lot of group have still hard time with her because of this, the artificially way to increase the difficulty of the fight by making mechanic invisible.
New content, DF is fine
Pre-made, Old content is fine
DF old content is terrible, and this is the reason why T5/EX have terrible success rate, because "ONE" person thinks they can just go in there clueless, not guide/video, nothing. well that "ONE" person just fck up 7 others in there DF success.
So make a party? DF is for everyone with every play style. If you are looking for something specific create a party. It's really that simple. Expecting people to watch videos to meet YOUR play style is insane. I would never watch a video before experiencing a battle first hand. I would never read a guide on something I have not faced myself.
I have posted this before but it perfectly sums up my thoughts on all this:
Alright guys...back in my day we had to walk 15 miles barefoot in the snow.....hahahaha...just kidding! Here goes:
My generation of gamers and today's gamers like us, spend hours learning the mechanics of games. We learned how to play to our fullest to take advantage of a game's system. Guides, pfft, WE WROTE THEM! Watching videos (VHS, LMAO) for tactics was unheard of.
I have noticed a lot of posts on these boards, "People are only concerned about the endgame, rush rush rush end game." Me? Not so much. I like the journey, I like learning. I love failing and failing and failing, only to eventually succeed! Not because I was TOLD what to do, but because I FIGURED IT OUT. Being told what to do ruins games for me. The entire endgame of FFXIV has been people telling me what to do. Where is the fun in that?
I have tried to make "learning" parties. I challenge all of you to go into PF and make a learning party for anything that is not coil and let me know how that goes. No one WANTS to learn, people WANT to be told what to do. That is just not something I understand. Why are you playing a game, if you are being told what to do? Why are you given different rotations/armor/weapons if it is only acceptable to use certain ones? Why are players shunned for experimenting and not playing a certain way, shouldn't this be encouraged? Break the mold and find an even better way to do it, that's how I roll.
Yes, yes I know, learn on your own time, don't waste mine! Personally I feel that attitude is destroying MMOs, it's not the "theme park casual carnival" everyone says it is. It is deep game, with various different ways to beat the exact same boss, but too many people want to use the proven way that worked before, too many people are afraid to break from the mold to try anything new, and way too many people are content being TOLD what to do, because they are not there to play and have fun, they are there for loot, loot, loot, loot, loot! Nothing else matters and it kills what could be a very unique community.
I have posted this before, SE needs to implement a system within DF, you queue up for DF as normal but you are given an option: Explore or Speed Run
Explore: For new people and people who want to take their time through the dungeon
Speed Run: For people who just want to go for the loot
Anyways, that is my 2 cents on this topic. I understand people do not want their time to be wasted, however, what about the flip side, some people actually WANT to learn but are given no time to.
I'd rather go in blind and figure things out more as I go. Especially as a Tank. Keeps me sharp and on the top of my game. :P
Rather do that than simply memorize a guide and the regurgitate the information. It's a game not a damn school class.
