My rant about the glamour system...

OK, this will sound like an empty complaint, but it's kind of a question... The thing is... there are 2 ways games gave incorporated such a system:

The Lord of the Rings Online way: You have an "outfit" tab on top of your equipment layer in the character info window. click the tab and you access a "layer" of equipment you can drag pieces of eq into. Anything you put on this layer will be the gear that APPEARS on your character. Also, the gear you drag there is just copied, the actual piece is still in your inventory, and after you put it into your outfit, you can store it in your bank/sell/whatever.

In that system, there is gear with no stats meant for outfit only; you can have more than one outfit layer, and change between them at will marking one as "active". The most obvious advantage to this is that you don't have to reskin pieces of equipment when you upgrade gear; the gear that appears on your character will be what's on your outfit layer, no matter the actual equipment you're using underneath.

The World of Warcraft way: Each piece of gear can be individually reskinned to look like another piece of gear. That is done with a cost, and each individual piece reskinned needs that cost to be paid. If you upgrade your gear, you have to reskin the new piece of gear.

Now, as I see it, the WoW system has a major flaw in comparison to the LotRO system which is forcing you to reskin every new piece of equipment you get. When we glamour up our characters, it's because we want them to look that way in a more-or-less permanent way, and forcing people to go to the NPC to transmogrify every gear upgrade was a MAJOR hassle when I played WoW.

Now I ask... what's the reasoning behind they implementing the WoW system instead of the LotRO one? I can understand they wanted to implement the system as a sink, be it a gil sink or a crafting material sink or whatever. But that could be done using an outfit system too. Why make us reskin our equipment every time we upgrade? :(

Consumables are a great gilsink, I'd assume that'd be the honest answer to why it is such (why you have to reapply it). Though I can see it being an annoying ardour when've upgraded an item multiple times. Separating it to each gatherer type means no particular class just earned a better income of consumables. Its pretty easy to mentally rp in the WoW-ish method as well. I'd perhaps request less tier stuff though, just one that goes level 1 to 1 less than current level and current level. Cheaper one is the first one.

I'd like to see a catalog but thats cause I'm super lazy when it comes it organizing my inventory (much like Diablo 3's glamour system where after collecting an item you can use its image, after paying for the "glamour prism").

Getting glamour gear, the correct glamour crystals, or dying AF ........ vanity is often harder to obtain than the initial BiS gear! It probably makes more sense in Japan. When I think of the typical JRPG (narrative based, set characters), then compare it to the WRPG (customization based), it's just not the same...

Japan, where everyone looking and playing the exact same is free, but standing out costs more time/money.

Aside from the inconvenience of having to constantly glamor new armor there are three other serious flaws.

1. You cannot glamor items that occupy more than one slot in your inventory.
2. Unlike WoW we can have different jobs, and some of those jobs share gear, if you want to glamor your High Allagan armor to look like the paladin exclusive PVP armor then your warrior is likely to look like a patchwork of ugly armor because it doesn't share the glamor.
3. The glamor crystals are overly obtuse to craft. Everything requires the same materials yet there are 5 different ones for each craft. There is really no excuse for having more than 1 for each class or 1 in general. It takes me 10x longer to craft these things because you got to go through the process of checking which tier crystal you need for each specific armor.

I expected their glamor system was goign to be the bad one when they said you needed a crafter to do it so it's not like I really expected them to get it right anyways.

I don't mind having to re-glamour an item when there's a gear upgrade, it's not like you upgrade your gear every day, what bothers me is the lack of a sort of catalog or wardrobe where we can save the "skins" we unlock, instead of having to keep the item in our inventory/retainer, or perhaps even preview skins we have yet to obtain so we can know what to aim for.

You know my complaint? That it can only be equipment your job can wear. I like mage gear, I hate mages. Woe is me

Or how battle gear is cheap by the dozen, yet casual wear may as well be considered luxury item. I wonder how people in Eoreza live?

Let's add to the cons list:

1) Glamours despeller: Why do I have to purchase an item to remove the glamour effect? It would be better to just being able to switch glamour on or off like we do with headgears.

2) Glamour limits. We have jobs that share the same gear (shilla robe of casting /healing - evenstar robe - daystar robe) and there's no way to differentiate them because once an armor is glamoured it will show its new appearance. If my SMN and BLM share the same gear, I will not be able to customize them as I wish. Glamour is just bad.

My only rant about glamour is that I'm sick of seeing lv1 glamour gear being so difficult to obtain for low level people. Why make it lv1 when you have to be a ilvl100 and raid the latest content to find the mats and then find/level up a crafter to get it, or to farm enough gil to afford the crazy prices on the market boards? Just make it level 50 then, cause it clearly isn't made to be available to the casual players who don't do endgame nor have access to high amounts of gil.

It is quite interesting that some glamour items cost far more then stat based gear that increases your jobs performance. Maybe after a few months of returned items people will realize no one is going to pay 500k+ just to dye a peice of AF armor..

But another rant is that if you have say WHM and SCH and they can both share the same gear you glamour 1 that can only be used by whm it won't show on sch. and vice versa.

Also some items like sailor set that when you dye it, 90% of it's color remains, what's the point of letting me dye it then?

So you can glamour it on every gear, not only on highlevel gear.
