New TANK idea

I was thinking of a new tank and wanted to see if anyone else liked the idea.
The job would be called Templar and would be a HIGH DEFENSIVE tank, more than what the pld is. And the weapon would be a HUGE shield, with the gear being huge as well. And the idea of it would be heavy damage taking and the skilld would be based around you putting spells on the shield. The spells for example could be def buffs, a spell that damages the attacker when hit, or one that u activate and all the damage u take for the next 5 or 10 sec gets put out to damage on the target or another with the same idea but
puts the taken damge to health for the team. plz tell me what you think.

If this is "concept" than it lacks a lot of details. How would that class be balanced? What skills exactly you want them to have as buffs? What combos? How they would generate the hate? What would be their story (background)? How should they spec and how (I mean by what) will they be different from WAR and PLD?

Honestly, you sound like a child who just want a big bad guy with big bad shield because he just saw one in some kind of cartoon.

Well I thought at one point if they did add new tanking classes with shields they could have one that's better with small shields, large shields and the pally for medium ones. The Templar one you mentioned could have defender as a class, use large shields and have a spear or halberd, have counter attacking skills rather than aggressive ones. it's a pretty vague idea but atm if/when they add a new tank (SE mentioned they will add a new tank and healer in the expansion) I'm guessing it'll be samurai. This is just guessing though.

On a side note if you watch the end of an era trailer you can see some soldiers using great shields and halberd/lance type weapons so it could be a possibility, although using a shield as a main weapon seems silly to me.

Put some spikes on dat shiz, and push it in da mobz face. Then he does the deeps!!

If they brought in something like this then I'd like it to be magitek based. Similar style to the Cape Westwind boss.

Except that no one in real life relied on a shield as a main weapon, they usually have a weapon of some kind (spear,halberd,sword). granted it would take a lot of practice but if someone else is using a weapon and knows how to use it a shield by itself isn't going to be enough unless the person you're fighting is an idiot or a comic book villain.

Love how "real life" comes into play for a (final) "fantasy" game. Although that's none of my business.... *sips tea*

When you start saying "if i was in X situation then I'll do this" real life is brought up. My real life statement was more in response to that, however i still wouldn't like a class that only uses a shield but that's just me, in the end i just wouldn't play it so no skin off my nose.

That wasn't to either of you directly. I just hate when people bring that sort of thing into the discussion especially when discussing new jobs. I'm sure "real life" has little to no bearing on that as all the jobs are glamourized and/or drawn directly from mythology xD.... Don't you love how I weaved in 2 facets of the game into my post =D

A new tank and healer are coming in the expansion (due out in 8 or 9 months). What classes they will be is currently unknown.

No we don't. We need new people playing tanks, and that's a totally different matter.

If people are dumb enough to play a role they never intended to play just because "lulz that job", they are going to be horrible tanks and it won't solve anything. To play tank, you have to be willing to play the role, not the job. The choice of the job comes after.


(that said, there ARE some people who don't play tank yet because they don't like current jobs. They aren't the majority though)

He just said that you had not explained anything, so we can't comment at all on your idea.

You can't say "new class cuz new weapon", you have to give some thoughts on the skills, traits, job, lore....

That's what I'm getting out of the description.

We don't need new tanks, we may want new tanks but not need. Even if they made a popular job a tank that wouldn't solve the issues of more tanks if people don't like the role to begin with.

It might motivate some people to try it out but they may not like the tanking role enough to main it or anything.

Here is what I see with the addition of new tank and healer introduction....lot's of people at first to get it to 35. Those that currently play tank and healer stick with it coz they like that type of job. The rest fall off cause they wanna go back to dps'ing stuff.

i would think a cleric would be better, a shield and mace. umm as far as the big shield guy, i know this is a fantasy game and all but lets not be idiots. you cant fight someone with only a shield. its not a weapon and theres never been a "giant shield guy" that fought anybody knowingly without a weapon. sorry

I would like to see something like a warden from LoTRO. They were pretty cool, did pretty good dmg, had taunts, and HoT's. They had a shield and a spear, like a spartan...yea, like a spartannnn....

My guess for a new tank would be Lancer to 30 glad to 15 so it has a shield w lance class somewhat like how WKC2 had the lancer w counters attacks. It could also use the lance combos w glad defense cd.

Unfortunately your idea not only lacks in content, it is not viable in the game. if you see myth/sol gears shields use less to acquire than the weapon cause palis needs weapon and shield (so they add up)
If that happens it basically means that its an almost free update cause they might be using shield as main, but who is to say they cant use any shield?

And how about their attacks? im pretty sure you played Diablo 3 and you liked the shield glare skill from the crusaders that blinded and stunned foes and most of their attacks came from their shield, if you wanted, but its kinda not viable on final fantasy. On one side, i would love to use a crusader/cleric build. heavy armors, big maces, huge shields, it would make my ewelly nice and hard, but lets face it. Coming tank will be samurai. and that would please me.

The issue though is not that we are getting a tank or a healer. the issue is that there are not enough people to play the classes. Yes people will level them up to get them all to 50 because 'hey i can' but in the end, stable tanks are rarer than iridium from 'The Avengers' movie.

And i will not even add 'that they know how to play' into the equation.

New tank may involve the new thief class and end up being like ninja was in FFXI.

But really, and truly, this game doesn't need more tanks.

So If I create a topic "Newest tank idea" and write "Some big guy wielding a great 2h-sword. His skills will be more offensive oriented but he also will be dedicated to parry things - period." you will say that this is great post and informative? Really mate? Dual Wield Shield Tank. The Magitek Knight.
High Block, not as much dmg reduc as PLD, can build resistance to magic attacks stacks 3 times at 4%,6%,8% lasts 15 sec. @ 3 stacks you can ride it out or use the absorb for a AoE shield reducing magic attacks by 5% for party members in the the AoE shield zone.

When mounted on your Magitek while being the Magitek Knight class you and your mount get an exclusive dance.

The class will have augmentations
Augmentation I: Phy Blade that increases attack power by X
Augmentation II: Phy Shield reflects X damage to all dmg (ENMITY+)

Aggro Chain (has to be in Augmentation II)
CQC1 - 120 pot. attacks with shield and has a 30% chance to enhance Phy Shield reflect dmg.
Follow-Up - 150 pot. ENMITY+. attack with shield and has a 30% chance to enhance Phy Shield Reflect
Seek-N-Destroy - 270 pot. ENMITY+. attack with both shields and if no PS then you will do Phy Blast (110 pot) which is flash sized AoE. If Phy Shield is active then you will do Phy Blast II which is a flash sized AoE plus a shock DoT (45 pot) with a 5% chance to paralyze with each tick. The DoT lasts 15 secs.

Attk Chain (has to be in Augmentation I)
CQC1 - 120 pot. attacks with shield and has a 30% chance to enhance Phy Blade by X amount of attk pwr
Follow-Up - 150 pot. ENMITY+. attack with shield and has a 30% chance to enhance Phy Blade by X amount of attk pwr
Seek-N-Destroy - 270 pot. ENMITY+. attack with both shields and if no PB then you will do Seeker Missiles (130 pot) which is flash sized AoE. If Phy Blade is active then you will do Seeker Missiles II which is a flash sized AoE plus a shock DoT (45 pot) with a 5% chance to proc additional Seeker Missiles with each tick. The DoT lasts 15 secs. Seeker Missiles can hit max of 4 mobs.
