Hello there, I started playing FFXIV in 2.0, sadly I didn't get into 1.0 as I had no time for MMOs at that point. However, I do have a strong interest in the story that came before this so I was curious as to where the best place to go would be for reading up on the storylines before 2.0?

Here's a Lore Map of all 1.0 quests. Ignore the links, they just go to prototypes of an eventual lore guide (see My Goal below). You just need to YouTube the names of the quests and watch the cutscenes. There's the Main Scenario (each city has a four quest introduction arc, then they combine into the Path of the Twelve Arc) and the shorter Guild Scenarios (small arcs dealing with each city's culture). These all end on semi-cliffhangers, and the Path of the Twelve arc was scrapped and rebuilt for ARR's main scenario. It's not to say these things are no longer canon, but they aren't part of the story anymore and as such we might never get answers about them. The only thing SE kept form the guild scenarios was the story of F'lhaminn and Neillefranse, probably because their stories directly tie into Minfilia, who was kept for 2.0's main story.
After that, you'll see there's a very long and complex Seventh Umbral Era arc, this is when Yoshida-san took over, the VIIth Legion invaded and the Circle of Knowing manipulated the situation to re-establish the Grand Companies, and thwart their advance while at the same time dealing with the primal threat. This story is complex, but complete. I also wrote a summary for this fully canon story arc and SE let Fernehalwes answer some of the unknowns not addressed directly in the story, which is awesome, so here's that: The Rise and Fall of the White Raven
Recommendation: Be a little wary of the summary videos. 1.0 was convoluted and incomplete, and many summaries are rife with errors (even the game itself had a few). Take it all with a grain of salt until you can be relatively sure you've got it all together. If all you want is a general idea of the story, you'll be fine.
My Goal: Rebuild 1.0 as a list of story arcs that contain summaries, synopses, and transcripts that have been organized, proofed, and corrected. It's very slow going because the quests are just massive and I'm the only one working on it, so don't expect too much, there, lol. After more time spent on it than anyone would deem acceptable or healthy, I understand almost all of it and have filled in most of the plot holes via a ridiculous process I can only call "Lore Sudoku." Unfortunately, until I get all my transcripts together, I don't have an avenue to discuss most of it, lol

My Second (tongue-in-cheek) Goal: Convince Square Enix to bring back Sthalmann (aka Rostnsthal) in some form. Seriously, watch the four Lominsa intro quests + the Marauder storyline and see if you think this man was on a road to redemption and can't help but wonder what became of that. You know that whole Dark Knight Rises thing where Alfred had that fantasy he'd go on vacation and just see Bruce living a normal life somewhere? That's me, except I've convinced myself that, when expansion packs come out, we'll go to the Far East and find out that Sthalmann (feeling alienated when Dalamud fell and everyone came together under the Maelstrom but still wanted nothing to do with him) sobered up (sort of; you know, enough to function), sailed for a free city on the Far Eastern coast of Othard, and did something great with his life; maybe fighting the Imperial cause and recruiting their refugees into an authentic, Lominsan-style pirate fleet that now defends what's left of the independent cities there.

-From what I can tell, the Garlean Empire has control of every other place on the planet aside from Eorzea?
-if Al Migo was considered the strongest nation (country?) of Aldenard then why are their rebels treated so poorly within the three city states?
-Why was there a seal that preventing the primals from being summoned in Eorzea? How was it placed there? I know it's not a bad thing, but I am curious.
-Is Midgardsormr the big skeleton wrapped around the airship for the loading screen of Mor Dhona? Is he considered a primal? I know he was a summon in past games, but that doesn't always seem to mean they end up as Primals IE: Siren, Diablos, Atomos.

Honestly, I'd love to see your goal complete as it's not just the main story line but all the extra little bits of lore that I'd love to sink my teeth into. Like how, according to some on the forums, Edda shows in the 1.0 story (or side story) somewhere along the way. That's fun to know! -

No. I don;t think he is a primal, Siren was the closest but only becasue of her songs, atomos is a midboss split in three and Diabolos was sealed in Ampador instead of in Corthas.Quote:

Yeah these tombstones contain ancient myths, philosophies and military secrets. Basiclay like the Bible and the Art of War only they seem to of higher scope that the may contain as much myths as the total amount of mythos on earth.Quote:

Daybreak is an attack used by Scylla to petrify the players. Though you might be refereeing to the magic Louisoux used to attempt resealing Bahamut., if so that I personally haven't figured it out yet.Quote:

We know that there's a series of three massive continents that, for the sake of this explanation, you can think of as being like Africa, Europe, and Asia. These are called the "Three Great Continents." The continent in Africa's position would be Aldenard, Aldenard and it's surrounding islands create a cultural sphere called the realm of Eorzea. In the northeast, there's a land bridge connecting us to the middle of the Three Great Continents, Ilsabard, which is in Europe's position. This is where the Garleans are from - Garlemald conquered the northern nations and solidified them into an Empire and then conquered the rest of the middle content. After that, they went east, to the last great continent, Othard, in Asia's position, and conquered most of it. A few independent and strategically worthless cities that are benign to imperial domination still exist on Othard, but for the most part the Far East is subjugated under Imperial rule.Quote:

There are a lot of reasons all factoring into their present condition at once. Something easily overlooked is the fact that Ala Mhigo waged a war on Gridania in an attempt to expand not long ago. Then, you have the fact that the Ala Mhigans who live in Thanalan now fall into two groups - refugees and scrappy, patriotic freedom fighters. They're dependent on assistance and being offered work, and many aren't making much of an attempt to integrate into Ul'dahn culture. You can see where the Ul'dahns, who value power and wealth above all, wouldn't treat them very well. In 1.0, Ala Mhigo was even worse than it is now - a few tents in a cave - the only reason they're better off now is that Raubahn integrated well into Ul'dahn culture, dominated the Coliseum, became immensely wealthy, and then used his seat on the Syndicate to restore the Immortal Flames and revive the dying spirit of Royalism (loyalty to the sultana; most on the Syndicate are monetarist, loyal only to profit). The Ala Mhigan brigade of the Immortal Flames and Raubahn's good will probably went a long way to getting Ala Mhigans work and opportunities to take part in the city's defense and maintenance, but most still just consider them a burden unless they can find a way to exploit them. Look at any real-world mass immigration of unskilled laborers; lots of hostility in the American melting pot over the years seeing waves from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and most recently, Mexico.Quote:

I seriously doubt the amount of myth/sold/philo we get is cannon. They had to make a currency for it, and while the fact we trade tomestones to rowena is probably in the story, we didn't farm 13500 for the books and such.

I feel like the idea that there are other continents than what we've seen or even been given concepts of is a much more viable idea then coming to accepting the fact that Garleans control all of the world but that within Eorzea. Though as you pointed out there are smaller independent areas that evade it as well. Though, I would find pretty strange that a great empire could take over so much of the world, even facing off against Primals not found in Eorzea (if I read that write up correctly), just to get to where we go and have their plans foiled by us rotten kids and our little dog too. So, I think story wise it would make much better sense it's just that the Garleans have taken land in all the areas currently known to us, and unknown, is well, unknown.Quote:

I know those struggles well, and I feel for you. Keep hanging in there and you'll be able to accomplish it! Luckily, I have a partner in crime now, between the two of us we manage to bring home the bacon and cook it, which leaves us time to play the game together as well. I suppose I am pretty lucky in that sense! Reading the first page of responses, I had this fresh in my memory when I was finally able to join a competent T5 group in PF and clear it. You are referred to several times by Alisae and Urianger as our Sword in the Darkness in the quests following Twintania's defeat. It seemed to remind me that Hydaelyn actually says "...make of thee a blade of light." in the post final battle cutscenes.
There are many references to what lies beneath Cartenau as well, which ties in conveniently with what we know of Omega. But that could do with a thread of its own. -

On the subject of the size of Garlemald: they absolutely do not control "the world aside from Eorzea". We know, definitively, of the "New World" to the west of Eorzea thanks to item descriptions (popotoes are from there!); of Thavnair, which seems to be an archipelago in the "sea" between and to the south of the connected Three Great Continents and which is not ruled by Garlemald; of Meracydia, the location of which is unclear but was, from what can be inferred in-game, ravaged by an army of Allagan-enslaved dragons in Xande's time and possibly never recovered; and we also know that the Roegadyn, Lalafell and Mi'qote came from "elsewhere" and arrived in Eorzea comparatively recently, at earliest during the Fifth Astral. There's a lot of land the Garleans have never even touched. Garlemald is big - two continents is a lot of territory - but it hardly covers "the entire world". The plan for them, even, is to conquer Eorzea before considering lands beyond the Great Continents - mostly because they don't want Eorzea to backstab them while trying to expand elsewhere.
