Tired of "JP ONRY"? Let's bridge the language gap!

よろしくです! (Yoroshiku desu!)

Being English-speaking players on a "Jp-server" my friend Katella and I are striving to being able to bridge the communications gap between English and Japanese players here in FFXIV.

Therefore, we both decided to hold a "class" of sorts to aid ourselves and any other FFXIV player that wishes to help learn Japanese.

Now...neither of us speak much Japanese...that's why this is more of a "Learn together"/"study group" rather than a "class" (Hence the quotations before). Therefore, we are always open to more experienced speakers aiding us by correcting any mistakes, or offering any advice. Or even non-experienced individuals that have any questions.

Our first "learn together" was a bit rusty (and can be reviewed at any time in the following thread)...but we are already planning a much more organized second class.

It's a very slow process (Only 1 class a week), and we go in with the most basic knowledge of the language being shown. So don't expect anything advanced. The classes also only last about 30mins-1 hour and take place on my personal twitch channel. (Our next class will be this coming Sat at 3pm EST/12pm PDT...though classtimes will vary due to work schedules and the such...the times will be posted in the thread provided below)

We plan to offer common phrases that are used in DF groups, such as "よろしく!" (Which is a common greeting that changes depending on how/when it's used) as well as other useful things you may be able to use in macros during groups.

All we wish to do with this is help our fellow players. I know some of you might be thinking, "Why don't you just go to an English server"? To answer that...we don't want to to be quite frank XD...that, and, I'm fascinated by the Japanese, and want to be able to communicate with them.

Good effort there, but again practically speaking, usually the "JP ONLY" PF fights revolves around fights like coil/EX primal that requires substantial amount of communication and understanding of strategy

Knowing common phrases and greetings wouldn't get you around JP ONLY groups thou. Once they detected you can't communicate properly they'd just kick you.

I only manage to play with the Japanese if only I know the various strats they apply and I asked them which strat they'd want to do. They generally know that I'm a gaijin so they would just tell me what they intent to do in short phrases which I can understand (I'm just JLPT N5 level) and as long as I know my stuff they would accept me around... anything less than that I think it's gonna be difficult.

Good luck with the class. I was tempted to teach myself Japanese back in XI, still would try to if I had more use for it in this game.

Not going to work, you'll still be the little Gaijin, no matter if you speak broken Japanese or not.
It's their culture. There may be exceptions, but the majority of them rather plays with their own kind.

I've been learning the language myself because I'll be moving there in a few years. I really really enjoy the language and the players.

Not all Japanese players are as narrow-minded as you seem to think they are. I've been with a lot of JP-speaking groups that have been very pleasant to play with. You need to broaden your horizons, and start giving people more credit. The "It's not going to work, so don't even bother" attitude is never going to solve anything.

I've played FFXI from PS2 beta in 2002 until 2010, mainly with Japanese players because the game was not localized back then.
It's not as you think. But have fun.

I did read your OP, My brilliant idea still stands firm.

If you were on a NA server you wouldn't see a single JP only group or even have the problem you are having.

It is 90% of the time a communication issue and not because they're racist. If you can communicate with them just fine, they'll have no problem partying with you.

Also, to be frank, JP players are, on average, more competent than NA players. NA CT, for example, is a cluster eff of chaos and insults. JP CT is almost criminally organized and a pleasant experience. But that's just my view on it, as someone who has played with both communities.

You've obviously have been on the JP Servers for too long if you can't even deduce when someone's being sarcastic. Seriously, if you don't want any problems with communication join an English server. There are other ways to learn a language.

Similar to English groups having nice guys and a**holes, the same applies to Japanese groups.

Like joining Levi EX parties:

Good English groups: "You'll be OT, okay?"
Bad English groups: "Link your ilvl110 weapon now" -> kicked as you won't be bothering with this group if you had that weapon

Good Japanese groups: "Can you ST?" (probably kicked as you don't know what is ST)
Bad Japanese groups: Some Japanese chat -> kicked as you had no idea what is going on

You will need enough Japanese to know what is going on/ team's strategy in second coil, I'm afraid. Though really nice groups will link you a video. Would probably suck a lot (for them) if they said burn boss, and you went ahead and whacked T6 jellies while their melee just LB2'ed the boss.

And honestly, I'm not having issues on this server. I never said I was. All i said was that I want to be able to communicate with more players. I only used the "Tired of JP ONRY groups" as a tagline to get people's attention. Aaand, I didn't say "I'm tired of JP ONRY groups".

Personally, I can understand why there are JP only groups...it's mostly due to communication issues. Well...here I am trying to actually do something about it.

Good luck with your "class." I know from experience(four years of high school classes) that Japanese can be a hard language to learn. Even knowing it some and being interest in Japanese culture, I wouldn't try to intrude on Japanese players with my little knowledge of it, same goes from German players, as I'm taking German classes now. At least if people are being jerks in English, I can be a jerk right back at them and understand it. Maybe one day I'll be good enough to properly communicate in other languages in MMOs, but until then, I'm playing on English-speaking servers.

I'm not saying don't play on a Japanese server, I'm just saying I wouldn't do it, despite having prior knowledge of the language. Whatever floats your boat if you can properly deal with the consequences you've set for yourself.

And that's great for you. But I'm only making this thread for people who are actually interested ;p

This isn't just about getting into Japanese parties. It's about bettering ourselves, and being able to make new friends through new means. Bridging gaps.

I wouldn't care about parties myself, I learned how to go through easy content playing games in other languages due to not having any other choice, not saying that's what you're doing, it's just what I did before I got bored of the games for non-language related reasons. I'm actually hoping you do well with this, in all honesty. I just know it can be tough to learn and I'm wishing you luck on it. I just have a natural cautious side, I'd probably right in your position if it didn't keep me back.

Same opinion here on Tonberry.

They are hardly racist. Most of them can understand basic English but the thing is because they hardly practice it, they can't really reply you in English. Same goes to me - I can read and understand what they are mostly chatting but this doesn't mean that I can draft a grammatically correct reply to them without making stupid mistakes that will twist what I wanted to mean.

And if there's any hate on gaijins, 99% of the time they have met EN dickheads. Some of them can be pretty open and chat with you, for example there was once a JP player spotted me on the high ropes in Mor Dhona and asked me about it via /tell in Japanese and I taught him how to climb up in return, there was another time in High Level Roulette I got into AK with 3 other Japanese, and during Demon Wall the tank and I were chain typing the chorus of an anime some song where the chorus starts with about destroying a wall (well, Demon Wall).

They are generally fun/okay people, unless you appeared to be a total airhead then they'd frown upon you.

^^ I really appreciate it.

Of course this isn't going to be fool proof. And it will definitely be a lot of hard work. (But still fun) But I'm willing to give it a shot :) Just figured I'd see if there's others who are as well.

If need be Spy I can help out with learning. It's a tough and long road but if people are willing to put in the time to learn I'm willing to put the time in to help out ;)
I've paired with many JP players who are both kind and considerate with you knowing even a little bit about their language. All we have to do is try, we have nothing to lose by trying.

I've taken Japanese in the past and loved it! I can't wait to work on this project with you SPY! I am excited to learn more! I love learning about other cultures. We will have an amazing time broadening our understanding! I love our existing community on Masamune and I hope to do whatever I can to help encourage communication!

Such a shame that we have to be cut into jp and na servers...

That's because people where whining like crazy that they wanted regional servers after AAR launch. Until then, world-wide servers without language barriers were a FF exclusive feature in the MMORPG world.

Fyi. Some of us live closer to Japan and have better connection to their servers, to name a few. :/

Still, I rather like the mixed community we have and would never want to trade it with another. The jp players I've encountered in the server have been nice and friendly. And I'm interested in being able to communicate with them better.

Amazing. Let's lambaste the OP because they're playing on a JP server because they want to learn to communicate with Japanese players. Astonishing, right?

Spy, I hope this works out well for you, and anyone that decides to join in! From what little time I spent playing FFXI, I actually had a very positive experience with Japanese players across the board. Attempting to bridge cultural gaps simply for its own sake is always a worthwhile cause, and those with the patience to keep at it should be commended.

Yes I remember.

I always enjoyed playing a mmo that was always alive 24 7. Being on a Japanese server has its ups and downs of course. Shame I can't have both communities. ..well not like xiv is really community driving anyways.

Saying "yoroshiku" isn't enough in JP only groups. You need to be able to communicate with the PT and if you can't do it then you shouldn't join their groups.

You might be able to get away with only knowing hirigana but you at least need to know how to read kanji to understand everything being said. Kanji is hard.

Best of luck with this Spy Japanese is a very fun language iv played lots of JPN games like PSO2 and MHFO and lots of Japanese players are fun and love to help others :)

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but i do recommend getting a program called Rosetta Stone. (http://www.rosettastone.eu) Can be a bit expensive, but there are ... places... you can get it from.

if your whole group is using the program, you can help each other through it, and it really is an amazing learning tool for languages.

If you run into the Kanji wall and can't find a way to jump over it, I recommend learning Chinese. Chinese is "excusively Kanji" all the way and in very many cases the Japanese simply copied & pasted it over the centuries, which makes japanese even easier for Chinese people (in the rare case they are willing to communicate with Japanese people, though).

I disagree. You can read 日 one way in Chinese. You can read it 3 or 4 ways in Japanese. So you have to know the reading for the word. Chinese characters are just 1 character = 1 sound. Japanese 1 character = possibly, and usually, many readings.

I didn't mean to say it's identical and can be understood right away. It's absolutely right that the Japanese use of it evolved during the centuries. I wanted to point it that it's an easier way to learn them, especially since traditional mandarin is the root of the Japanese language. At least it was a lot easier for me, after I first failed at Kanji.
