HUZZAH!
No more wimpy daggers and tiny gladii for our sword-wielding Gladiators and Paladins! I, for one, can't wait to see what these new weapons look like.
Out of curiosity, though, is anyone disappointed with this change, by chance? If so, why?

I, for one, am disappointed. Now I can't /shout "Gotcha, bitch!" whenever I pull my tiny-ass dagger out from behind my shield.
You're still going to have them, they're just being renamed.
Not just being renamed, they are going to have a different look too, if I read correctly
They were kinda pushed into a roadblock, for the incoming ROG/NIN, so that they will use the proper 'daggers' which made no sense for GLA/PLD.
Can't wait the redesign, hopefully looking better than some crap at higher lvls.. glamour, here I come!
I liked the gladius. I just hope they leave the spatha alone - it looks right for a Gladiator.
I always thought the dagger weapons were an odd choice for gladiators and paladins. They seemed so out of place to me.
It's so you could roleplay a shank-knight.
Didn't mind the daggers as much as the ugly cricket bats!
Lol, I agree. I realize that wooden swords are a part of weapon history and such but.... what am I, a pirate!?
I'll kind of miss the daggers though. Sure, a dagger looks a bit silly when paired with a shield but, it's really more of a "gladiator" weapon style. Think of that old movie "the gladiator" and it wouldn't look out of place there. As a paladin, sure, you don't want to use a puny, un-knightly dagger though. A dagger is more of a weapon of despiration and not becoming of a knight. So having the daggers earlier down the line in a way showed their evolution in style...
Dunno, I guess it doesn't matter... a bastard sword though? That's the name of one of the replacement blades. It seems a bit much to use one handed.... lol
I'm curious. I have a couple of dated daggers of poisoning, I think, and they aren't listed, so unless they just haven't bothered listing the dated items I guess I'm going to have another piece of exclusive glamour gear.
Now, if only I didn't hate the look of a GLA wielding a dagger ...
I find it strange that a gladiator can't use a gladius. Is where the term gladiator came from in the first place.

Sad we're losing the Spatha/Gladius swords because they actually do look pretty and are fitting of the "Gladiator" class.
Dear, SE,
Please make a Harry Potter class so that white mages don't have to use wands ever again.
Thank you.
Yours truly, Elim.

Bye bye Fake Rogue/Thief glamour look ; ;
It is. I remember 1.0 Gladiators being advertised as masters of one-handed bladed weapons, but that was also back when Gladiators weren't also paired with shields (as Sentinel was a sub-class specifically for shields). They eventually got moved into being the sword-and-shield tank class we have now, but the daggers stayed. Now that Rogue/NIN is being released, they don't need daggers anymore.
I pray for this all the time. I hate one-handed casting weapons and mage shields.
That's actually really cool looking. But hey, now you can be an actual Rogue/Thief.
This is the peril of designing classes around their weapons. We can't have any actual variety due to the system. The glamour system didn't help us in this regard either because you still can't wear anything that your class cannot already wear. So if for RP/aesthetic reasons you wanted to wear say...ilvl 90 Bard gear and a dagger....well tough.
When they made classes defined by the weapons they have, they should have made all armor/clothes glamourable.
IF the spathas were good for Byzantine cataphracts and gladii were good enough for roman legions, well, they could be good for paladins/guardians too :D
Bastard swords are shorter than longswords but longer than shortswords. They're single-handed weapons.
afaik, we're not losing Spatha. I honestly wouldn't mind if they kept the Gladii, but I'm glad they're getting rid of daggers. They just seemed so out of place.
I... I liked the knives, though... sad day for me.
Please tell me only rogues are using daggers and not ninjas.
Ninjas with daggers? Really?
I believe they're actually longer than longswords but shorter than great/2h swords.
They could be used with either one or two hands due to the length of the pommel.
Edit: The internets agree with me
Well this is the best news I have read all morning! Every time I get a weapon upgrade and it's a tiny little dagger that has no place on my tank I wept quietly to myself. No longer!
I'm very happy with the removal of GLD/PLD Daggers. They just look... weird with a shield.
