iLvl 100 Soldiery gear for white mages

Is there any point to this gear? The jewelry is pretty good, but the gear all has crit on it. I'd take determination over crit any day of the week. Or I'd think so? Determination is a definite gain where crit is a crit chance so it seems like a no brainer. I should mention I'm a white mage, and I'm just wondering should I even bother with lvl 100 soldiery gear? They all have crit so I'm thinking my ilvl 90 myth gear seems preferable.

If the lvl 100 soldiery gear is better can you tell me why?

Do you do Second Coil? Do you have a chance of getting the High Allagan pieces that are "better" than their Soldiery equivalents? If not, you don't really have a choice.

Crit being a "chance" and Det being the superior option always are also cop-outs. Det's contribution to heals, point for point, is very minor. So is Crit's. And Speed's. And PIE. None of them matter that much. Weapon Damage and MND are still king.

After giving it some thought and comparing this is what I'm going for Personal BiS

I do turn 2, it's a joke. Medica 2, Medica until Medica 2 runs out, rinse repeat.

I really don't notice that big of a difference with either types, I feel like they add such a small amount that you don't notice it. I've heard people say that Determination gives more overall heals than crits, but I have no way to know if that's true.

So do you think I should stick with the crit jewelery from the tomes instead of the Allagan determination?

Second Coil is not Turn 2.

It's no different before when the myth gear favored SCH more than WHM. In order to increase the number of SCH players SE purposely made gearing them up with BiS easier.

That being said, it is true that WHM is gimped when it comes to the usefulness of any secondary stats so getting the Soldiery set isn't the end of the world (I'm getting it regardless because I don't have good RNG luck and any +MND is an upgrade)

I think it will be very beneficial is you have both whm and sch ^^;
TBH, my whm feel the different while SS drops so much at the beginning. The timing I used to start casting often missed.
Ofcoz I have no problem and can't feel it after serveral battles.

mm get the peices with piety (body breeches belt?) and the jewelry you need, anything else fill with i90 pentamelds with full det?

At least the soldiery weapon is amazing. If you're clearing T7 be sure to set aside 1300 soldiery for it asap.

I tried the crit gear and then the determination right after, I definitely think that the Det was better.

I also think I was using Cure 2 too much when a Cure 1 would suffice so I'm saving a lot of mana. I guess crit and Det/SS just boil down to preference. I'll prob get the soldiery stuff but will def do turns to get the better stuff.

And I thought second coil meant turn 2, I haven't tried 6-9 yet. Having trouble with t4 pphase 5 mobs aggro me every time.

my personal soldery choices are only the pants (as i believe this is the best option) and gloves for the left and jewelry right. everything else will be swapped to high allagan. though the neck/gloves may be replaced but that will be later

edit: for t4 if you are getting aggro pop that shroud. sometimes its best to hold off on a aoe cure or med2 till tanks get aggro. also timing when to use them is good to. dont want any HoTs going off before the end of a group leading into the start of the next

Item level generally is a good indicator of that item's usefulness since it directly impacts your main stat. With the Soldiery items it often boils down to having a choice, as in: can you actually get ilvl 110 gear from TSCoB? If you're just contemplating getting i100 gear vs keeping your i90 gear then yes, every single Soldiery item is an upgrade to your statistical healing output during a fight.

As has been mentioned before, the differences between secondary stats are really small. Here is a rough comparison of what stats do: [hps = healing per second, hpm = healing per mp spent]
- determination is a good boost to hps and is reliable. also boosts hpm
- crit is roughly as strong as det for WHM hps and increases hpm, but it's unreliable
- piety indirectly increases your hps by allowing you to spend more mp over the same fight duration (e.g. casting a Cure 2 where you would otherwise cast a Cure)
- speed increases hps but does not increase hpm

IMO the other stats are more important than spell speed for the sake of sustainability, but as long as you don't run out of mp everything is fine. Numbers for the HPS gains are hard to come by, but a full det build vs a full crit build would roughly trade 5% higher heals for 10% less crit = 5% statistical healing increase so they come out equal. [1]
Yet again, differences are so small that you won't notice much one way or the other, most fights have you cast a large enough sample of spells that crit chance should even out and the hpm of both is pretty much equal.

[1] I ran the numbers for a 565 mnd, 455 crit, 348 det gear vs 554 mnd, 602 crit, 253 det with 77 md weapon (i115) looking at a 400 potency spell with 50% crit modifier (Cure, Physick). No guarantee of reliable numbers.

The ilvl100 gear gives more mind than the i90 gear does. In general this will be enough to overcome any determination loss on the i90 gear. For example, let's look at Cleric's Culottes (WHM myth pants) versus Weather Daystar Breeches:

i90: 29 vit, 29 mind, 17 det, 26 pie
i100: 34 vit, 34 mind, 8 acc, 38 crit, 20 pie

You lose 17 determination and 6 piety, but in exchange you get 5 vit, 5 mind, 8 acc, 38 crit. I would take 5 mind for 17 det/6 piety on it's own - it's THAT important, so adding the other stats on is just icing on the cake.

That said, if you are looking for efficiency (and are not getting into T9 anytime soon), you should probably upgrade right side first. The accessories are all more efficient gains of mind per soldiery tome. The only reason I specified Turn 9 was that the right side accessories give no increase in vit, and there are some mechanics in T9 which encourage large amounts of HP across the group.

The funny, and rather strange part about the Second Coil raid is that most healing gear will drop in the first two turns (6 and 7). Not to mention you also get a weapon out of Turn 7, and a jewelry/shield upgrade. Turn 8 has our belt and ring, but minor things to worry about at that stage of the game.

As far as BiS goes, the secondary stats are purely up to you. While most go with Det, you will notice this time around that our Piety suffers a bit with this choice. Once you become more familiar with the fights this probably won't be an issue, but just something to keep in mind as you upgrade.

As you can see my food choice is in fact Mulled Tea, instead of the Buttons in a Blanket. My reasoning behind this is the fact that 16 extra determination will hardly add much more healing over my current choice of gear. On the other hand the Piety and Vitality from Mulled Tea will help me out more, personally speaking. I could care less about the spell speed it adds. This is just my personal preference, as we are still learning Turn 8, so having more Mana and HP is more beneficial to me at the moment.

Granted Pineapple Juice would be better, but the cost to make said juice is more then I'm willing to pay. It's a 2 Star Recipe and I'm lazy, so Mulled Tea is my preferred choice.

I like my animus, until t9 decides to drop WHM staff.

I think crit would save many party members life.. However, it's very situational. But, again... How good is "Det" compared to actually healing stat "Mind".. Det is so small that, i think people shouldn't batter unless they have over 100 Det. Even tho, it's so so... Because it won't stop me from using medica 2 - 3 times in "almost wipe" situation. Lets put it this way.. What would you choose, 20 ~ 35 more healing power or 50% healing power on successful crit heal. It's all about balance and play style. In my case, mind > crit > det. What do y'all think.

There is 1 situation where Crit really shines on a WHM, and that's regen (and Medica II's regen of course). Each tick has it's own chance at critting, so a high crit rate really makes Regen a powerful single-target heal. Hell, having it crit 2 ticks in a row completely removes the need to cast a Cure and that's mana saved in the long run.

I personally prefer cast speed-which seems really rare. Call me odd, but since I focus a lot more on spells such as stoneskin which has a long cast time. I also can't use like half the WHM weapons in the game properly since I'm a sword and shield type caster (both BLM and WHM). This means that realistically speaking, only Leviathan weapons work for me.

I wish there was a bit more choice when it came to end game gear.

My primary reservation on soldiery gear is the huge loss of piety going from i90 BiS to full soldiery. It's something like 55 points lost across the entire set. Just when I was getting used to having enough MP, how are they going to make an "upgrade" REDUCE our MP by that much? Basically the only two sure bets on soldiery gear is the ring and the pants, and the pants mostly because high allagan drops late. Some soldiery could even be considered a downgrade until you get it to i110 anyway.

In terms of throughput? No. Every single i100 Daystar piece gets you at least 3 Mind over an i90 piece in the same slot, and the chest/legs are +5 each. That more than makes up for losing 12ish determination on the small pieces, and 17 on the big ones.

In terms of Piety, you'll have to judge for yourself when too much Piety lost is too much, but if I were in full i90 and somebody offered me any single Daystar piece, I'd accept without even looking at which one they were offering. Every single piece is an upgrade; the most you lose on Piety from i90->100 on a single piece is 16 on the myth hat/hands, and even those are solid enough throughput upgrades that I'd take either one.

Do I recommend full Daystar? No. You'll lose a decent amount of Piety over the set, true, and you need to account for that. But Daystar supplemented with some Turn 6/7 drops is juuuuuust fine. Just like some of the Myth pieces were kinda meh - the jewelry in particular had a lot of crit on it.

You never see anyone talk about the MND curve. When was the last time you got a MND upgrade and noticed your heals got bigger? After about i80 they stopped. Probably earlier. I feel as though once you but the pieces with a piety upgrade with soldiery, there isn't much incentive to keep upgrading healer gear except when it happens to drop. Is it going to make you a better healer? I don't think so. Still I plan to try to get that yagrush. That baby has some sexy numbers on it.

There are no diminishing returns on main stats. Test it yourself by casting Cure on yourself like 20 times in one gear configuration, write the numbers down and calculate the average then change your gear to a lower/higher mind total and repeat. Yes, it takes more work than saying "After about i80 they stopped". But on the other hand it is based on real data :)

And it is easy to feel like your upgrades don't do anything because each time you upgrade you increase your MND by like 3 or 4. That difference you aren't going to notice. But do the experiment above with say 50 MND difference you will see it very clearly.

I don't think this Daystar set really is that great. It decreases a lot of piety. the gears added critical but the accessories lack critical and also have no piety so... this set is all about a little bit more vitality, mind, and determination but will decrease your MP.

It's done this way so SCH and WHM aren't having to fight over the same drops in coil2. I personally didn't mind the hit to piety upgrading my head and gloves but I also made sure I had the soldiery weapon to make up for it. The set as a whole isn't really what you want but can be used if you're extremely unlucky with High Allagan drops.

As a dozen people have said, the main stat upgrades on the soldiery gear alone will make it an upgrade.
I'd recommend spending your soldiery tomes on any piece that you think you'd wear the longest first
Healers loots in the second coil are:
Turn 6 - Gloves, Boots, Earrings
Turn 7 - Bracelet,Choker,Chest
Turn 8 - Ring, Belt, Head
Turn 9 - Pants

Depending on when you think you'll be at certain points (if ever, I won't assume your interest in second coil) prioritize your upgrades based on how much use you'll get out of it and which ones you'd consider BiS. Or, you can be frugal with your tomes and stay near the 2k cap while waiting to see what patch 2.3 gives us.

It's pretty much assumed that new CT will drop an alternative i100 set. Perhaps some of these pieces will be more suited to WHMs that aren't yet progressing in second coil. 2.3 is only around 5 weeks away so you could just save your soldiery until then.
