Great Scythe
The scythe is a weapon for farmers, not knights.
Great Sword...for the love of God plzzz...Great Sword
Sword and shield and make it a tank. We really don't need anymore DPS in the game.
Then we don't need Dark Knight. The whole gimmick of Dark Knight is sacrificing HP for damaging attacks, and you don't want your tanks sacrificing their HP.
As the game stands right now, you might as well make Dark Knight a DPS branch for Marauder with an anti-emnity toggle buff. So my vote is Great Axe <_<
Great sword. A scythe is not a weapon, it's a botanist's secondary tool.
Or you know, sword and shield like every ff except 11 and make it a dps. *gasp*
In the universe(s) of Final Fantasy, the Dark Knight makes me think of two things: Dark Knight Cecil and Paine with the Dark Knight dress sphere (I know that Yuna and Rikku could also use the dress sphere, but Paine looked the best). Neither of which carried scythes.
By all means correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the class was called dark knight not dark botanist. Great sword all the way, for crying out loud the jobs main ability through so many iterations is named "Dark Sword"...
Literally. He harvest the souls of the dead, cutting the ties that bind them to the world of the living. It's even in the name -- the Grim Reaper, as in one who reaps (harvests). The Grim Reaper is what we call a psychopomp -- an entity whose purpose is to guide the souls of the deceased into the afterlife.
Anyway, on topic, sword and shield is the classic Dark Knight equipment.
I hate what FF11 did to DK lore by adding it to the class once. I was a DK for 7 years in FF11, and hated the scythe so I never touched it (SCOURGE!!!!). That said I would say either Sword & Board or Greatsword would be good, but I lean more toward S&S, for the reason of tradition, and also because I'm lazy and don't want to level another class.
Greatsword. Sword & Shield may work if they tone down the armor enough to make it fit a sword & shield and if the shield is used to actually fight. Greatsword would still look better.
Dual wield and bring back FFXI's rampage ws.
But no one complains about it in Castlevania games and Scythe ws was badass in FFXI.
Scythes have been in used in videos for a long time, heck there's a Pokemon named Scyther. It just boils down to FFXI HATE!! Hmm being limited to one weapon in FFXIV does suck though.
:> Scythe cuz it looks cool. In XI players using great sword always looked like they would topple over ... .=-=;
It shouldn't be a tank job. Dark Knight is supposed to be the inverse of Paladin. ~_~;;
>_> so what if a scythe is a botanists secondary tool... we have axes for WAR, same diff.
a dark knight doesn't use scythes, it doesn't have anything to do with hating 11. i wouldn't mind seeing some unique ff11 classes but i don't wanna see the ones ff11 ruined like drk and rdm.
opinion? no DRK has never used scythes that's a fact, rdms have always only used whm blm giving them other spells means they aren't a rdm fact.
opinion wise is if the class sucked or not.
Greatsword is the only weapon for a Dark Knight.
so, a guy who barely even ranks on "inclusion in my strategy guide" level and a pokemon justify a "weapon" that is wildly impractical and a greater threat to the user than any opponent they would ever wield it against.
If the dark knight is more magic than sword then just have 'em use a staff. it's a more practical weapon.
If it's more sword than magic, have 'em use a SnS or great sword, it's a more practical weapon, and it's far better on the lore(one game used scythes out of the entire series...)
Nah FFXI made them extremely fun to play, more fun than any current job in FFXI I might say. Dark had cool weapon skills and job traits such as Guillotine, Cross Reaper, Soul Eater, Blood weapon, etc. Add in thief subjob for sneak attack/trick attack. Sooooo fun! Also RDM Chainspell, En-spells, magic burst, stuns, tractor, etc. So versatile!
Yet I've been destroying gods with my "weapon for farmers".
Funny how that works in a Final Fantasy game.
Fyi: XI was (and likely still is) the most profitable FF title to date, it doesn't matter what your opinion is when it comes to what how Dark Knight should be designed as FF classes evolves over time and XI gave more personality to them, usually you want it to evolve higher rather than regress and yes, you do come off as hating as XI didn't "ruin" anything. The ironic thing is, XIV ruined Black Mage and Summoner.
Soooooo true. Ruined brd too!
Edward is rolling over in his grave right now.

What next? Gun blades?

For those who have never actually used one (I have) I can promise you that a scythe "used' as a weapon on another human being would be gruesome, the old school two handed grain scythes are quite capable of separating someone from their leg(s).
Scythes were used in medieval uprisings to just such gruesome effect, the ones depicted in xi are built with a more combat oriented shape of manufacture than agricultural models, and being effective with one would pretty much require an absence of armor or shield on any enemy.
However claiming that scythes cannot be considered a weapon is reaching.
To say this or that weapon isn't suited to dark knight is amusing to me, the nailbat isn't some recent invention, it's been around in some form or another as long as people have been killing one another, and if one is going to say that some weapon is iconic to a fantasy series or knightly role I would actually say the spiked gauntlet is the favorite.
Get inside the lance at close range and killing someone with spiked gauntlets isn't any reach at all
Scythe scythe scythe! D:
SCYTHE
Scythe all the way.
Greatsword > Great Scythe > sword and shield
Sorry sword and shield is just bottom of the barrel
for me when it comes to drk.
I'm not so sure why your being so hard on this guy, he is simply voicing his opinion, as I might add "are you".
The impractical use off a scythe that in xi is "obviously" not pictured in the normal agricultural crafted lines (I know this because in my youth I actually used them), is nothing more than your own personal theory and observation.
The impracticality of the scythe as a weapon in combat would depend on many different factors of situation.
I don't know many people these days who actually use scythes as a work tool, but your knowledge of them is shallow at best, I am a farrier and thereby a blacksmith when needed by trade, and I have a 3lb anvil hammer that can be a very practical weapon at arms length.
I am also an infantry veteran, I happen to have an old friend who when his weapon jammed suffocated an enemy combatant with "mud", people can get very creative with the concept of "practical" in life or death circumstances.
The quote didn't patch I guess, this is in response to quote # 26.
Scythe but only if the artists can make them appealing and not plain, or if it could have some sort of frontal horizontal attack that can dps up to 3 enemies in front at the same time. If not then great sword, because thats more of a final fantasy feel than scythe.
Oh yea, and dark knights arent all about health sacrifice, the blood sword was always a favorite as it stole enemies life for yourself. And FFT sanguine blade.. mmm.. love me some FFT. This game should somewhat model itself after that amazing job system in some ways.
RDM will ALWAYS be very polarizing to people. Some like the support stuff (buffs enfeebs)
some like the back up curing abilities, some like that it can do so much, some like the idea
of melee and magic.
No matter what they do, people will be unhappy because of how many different things rdm
can and has done in the past. not to mention personal opinions and attachment to ideas.
This might explain then I suppose why no party went afield without one prior to the Wings of the goddess expansion, and why everyone hated depending on them only to be told they were also out soloing mobs that wiped entire balanced parties.
I played xi for almost 9 years.
