Battle Reform: Auto-Attack (06/30/2011)

Well here it is, not as much info as I would have liked, I guess we will have to wait for the Class Reform post to see the full adjustments. I like this new daily news thing they have going on, does this mean 1.18 is nearing release????

Also is Archer attacking with bare fists? Is this while they hold the bow in one hand, maybe they could have a Pimp Slap auto attack ^^

On a serious note though how do you think recast timers will be handled for the unlocked Basic Attacks. So like a PUG with Light Strike / Flurry / Pummel? Surely they will all be on the same timer like Raging Strike 1 and 2 otherwise if they had their own 5 second timer you could essentially just keep spamming attacks very quickly.

Changes Accompanying Auto-Attack

Lancer: Skewer
Archer: Puncture

The abilities Light Shot (Archer), Spirit Dart (Thaumaturge), Phantom Dart (Conjurer), Throw, and Stone Throw will remain available, although their usage will be regulated by a recast timer.

Recast timers will be adjusted for certain actions obtained via quests and guild marks whose action costs were managed solely through the stamina gauge.
Pugilist: Light Strike / Flurry / Pummel
Gladiator: Light Stab / Heavy Slash / Heavy Stab
Marauder: Broad Swing / Full Swing / Heavy Swing
Lancer: Heavy Thrust / Pierce / Full Thrust
Archer: Multishot / Close Shot / Heavy Shot
Thaumaturge: Shadowfall / Silhouette
Conjurer: Nature’s Fury / Elemental Shroud

The effects of the following actions will be changed:
Speed Surge will affect auto-attack delay instead of the stamina gauge.
Ambidexterity will increase the chance of blocks while guarding, instead of halving the stamina gauge cost of your next action.
Chainspell will no longer reduce the stamina cost of your next spell.

Patch 1.19 and Beyond
Auto-attack functionality will be prioritized in 1.18. Changes such as battle algorithm revisions, attack motion diversification, and peripheral motion tweaks are scheduled to take place in 1.19 and subsequent patches.

Attack Delivery
1.18 will introduce auto-attack in its basic form, which will permit Disciples of War and Magic to deliver a single strike (double for pugilists) each time it activates. Future patches will usher in multiple attacks, the activation rate of which will be determined by actions, traits, and items.

Algorithms
The existing algorithm will be maintained for 1.18, with attack delay to be introduced as a new parameter for weapons. Work to revise the algorithm will commence in earnest from 1.19.

Actions Obtainable via Quests and Guild Marks
Actions falling into this category will be brought under re-examination, which will include a review of developmental direction. This will be done together with the planned revisions we have for actions in the future. As this may result in drastic changes to certain actions, we are considering ways to allow players to reselect actions, such as a refund of guild marks.

This means a large skill list...wonder how much balance will be in 1.18 and how much expected for 1.19

Happy to see things are moving and all this info is being released but I am not sure I like the way they are doing it. Why split the auto attack implementation in 2 patches? I expect the game to be kind of unbalanced between 1.18 and 1.19, especially with the dungeons being released...

We will basically have auto attack that still uses the old algorytms, that sounds messy.

Oh well, at least it seems the patch is getting closer.

wow, battle algorithms are kind of a massive, massive deal to me. its extremely dissapointing to me that even after the HALF MONTH delay that they couldnt introduce improved battle algorithms.
it seems all were really getting is auto attack in its most raw form and two dungeons which take place in existing areas and a hand full of new-re used armour.
it sounds to me like most of the work went into the guild leve reform and introducing auto attack, everything else theyve talked about for 1.18 so far shouldnt realistically take any longer than those two things.

i hope for games sake that 1.19 isnt 1.5 months after 1.18... itd practically be september by that time.

Nothing majorly exciting here. Giggled a little when I saw that ARC is going to use bare hands as auto-attack. I wonder how that will look with a bow out.:confused:

Going to get 2 dungeons, which I'll be finished and bored with in 1 night (expectations)

Reduced Guildleve system, preventing any motivation to rank up

not looking good anymore haha.

I guess we will have to wait and see. Maybe auto-attack will be nice... or maybe it will be like we are expecting it to be xD

Well if they follow the plan, we will probably get 1.19 in August and 1.20 in September. But then, since SE never say they will do anything definite, but are only "aiming" to do the things they have planned, I wouldn't be surprised if things get delayed even further.

Well it's been 3 months since any update, and summer hitting for the kiddies. Just consider it beta testing and live through it. At this point either-or is going to end up the same answer.

Interesting way in how Speed Surge has been modified. I would not mind my basic attacks increase in speed. =)

i was hoping to get rid of the stupid mage base attack, which always seemed like a last-minute installment to me.
Other games have flames or ice casting out of their hands... and we have an invisible "poofpoof" as mages which seems like a bad joke to me. But thank god it's now an ability with a recast timer... YEY
so far everything seems like cheap patchwork to me, not like an overhaul at all. I really hope we'll see a shit load of awesome looking animations, and as mages, spells. I wonder if archer and mages have a real autoattack then... doesnt look like it to me. Perhaps /hopefully i'm wrong.

1.18 includes the following:

1. Removal of the Stamina Bar and implementation of Auto-Attack. (Letter #11)
2. Adjustments to Guildleves. (Letter #12)
3. Implementation of Settlements as quest hubs. (Letter #9)
4. Implementation of two instanced dungeons. (Letter #11)

1.19 includes the following:

1. Auto-Attack fine-tuning and animation diversification. (Letter #11)
2. Implementation of Beastmen Settlements. (Letter #9)
3. Adjustment to recipes. (Letter #12)
4. Implementation of the Materia Crafting System (Letter #12)

Did I miss anything?

Yes, Naoki Yoshida did in Letter #9. In it he states that the Development team finished testing Settlements in time for 1.18, but were still working on Beastmen Settlements ... so those will be in 1.19.

The only things you miss are speculations and "maybe" from the producer, eg Airships. for 1.19

I predict a summer event in 1.18 also.

I'm glad to see they're willing to re-evaluate the current guildmark reward (or lack thereof) situation

There should be also some new story in the Companies department (also Cid first look?) in 1.18.

The lack of talk is probably due to the fact that the community didn't really have as many questions regarding Settlements as much as they did for Jobs, Auto-Attack, and the Materia System. So the Development Team just let the statement stand as-is.

Actually, I would laugh if they just pulled an arrow out and started shanking mobs....

I still wish they'd explain why ranged AA is such a bad thing.

It would be nice to see an off hand dagger but that may be reserved for the Archer based Job.

Although im kinda warming to the idea of holding bow in one hand and backhand slapping a Dodo.

With lighter shields you do have a lower blockrate.

This worries me...it sounds like it will be introduced in 1.18, but it's not even half-way done, which means it will work terribly until SE gets around to beginning to fix it properly in 1.19.

They were joking right? It's not that hard to check your inventory screen every now and then, or when you notice you're throwing rocks to use w/e that ability was called.
