[Weekly Event] Hunter's Chance

Hello there! I've had lots of time to think about this (and lots of time to listen to "Hunter's Chance" from FFIX) to get the feel for this idea.

First of all, Hunter's Chance in FFIX was a competition within the game where you'd have to defeat as many monsters as possible to receive points. Certain Monsters would grant you a certain amount of points, and whoever ended up having the most points would win the competition.

However, with this being said, I'm not really going to leave you with just that impression. There is more to it.

The way the game is right now, there is no sense of competition, and when most people think of competition in MMORPGs, they tend to think of PvP challenges. While I await those types of challenges, I'd like to see if something like this could be implemented.

Hunter's Chance in FFXIV has no limit to how many members can attend. Each area/camp will be able to operate this event. R10 Hunter's Chance, R20 Hunter's Chance, etc.

Now that we know where it can operate.. just how will it operate?

Well, lets say a big mean Level 50 wants to bag on the new players? Well, they can enter the Rank 10 Hunter's Chance, but the mob levels will be scaled up with that of his own level. Yes, they will be Level 50. This means that the mobs available will be instanced for each player, and is the player's choice in which mobs to engage and receive points.

I also understand that choosing a time to operate Hunter's Chance will be difficult due to the fact that players are from around the world. So what "could" happen is to take in some sort of Tally system as FFXI's Nation Conquest did, but instead shows the ranks of the top players with the most amount of points. So what this means is that you can only partake in this event once a week, until the timer resets.

Players would gain SP from this, whether they are Level 40 doing Hunter's Chance at a Level 10 camp, or vice versa.

Though, the rewards would differ from camp to camp, so participating in every single camp's Hunter's Chance would be beneficial.

Now, as a weekly event may seem lengthly, and many would assume that they can only partake in only one Hunter's Chance, seems rather *yaaaaawn*

So, perhaps you may be able to participate in as many Camps HC as you desire. Its a challenge! Even throw in an NM to earn some unheard of amounts of points!

One thing that would make being Number One more worth it, is granting the Number One a special item that is worth his/her title!

EDIT: Rewards
- Instead of granting the players special items, instead granting them the amount of points they have earned, whereas they can then exchange those points for certain items. (Ex. FFXI Conquest Points exchange for Armors or Items like Chariot Band, Scroll of Instant Warp, etc.)

-Why?
This would then make it seem like winning isn't too great a deal, and that everyone can enjoy the benefits of this system!

EDIT: HCNMs
- NMs mentioned earlier would most likely be the Battle for the Claim. That, or partying up whereas you can split the points could also help (and most likely would be essential to defeating it before the timer runs out).

I'm with Nuru. The idea, in my opinion, is great. It adds a sense of excitement because people will see xx was the baddest mofo this week. Much props Nuru for the idea.

Thanks! Though the one thing that my Link Shell brought up was that they would have to have all the classes balanced out pretty well if they wanted to make it fair. Not sure how this would work but I'm thinking maybe AOE skills be restricted? Not sure if that's the only fix for the balancing, we'll have to see after all of the class balancing has been done.

If i remember rightly in IX this minigame gave a set time limit, alot of possible places to find mobs and more mobs than you could kill within the time limit given. You had to pick and choose what was worth spending time on and what wasnt, it was also important to save enough time to defeat the boss with. It was a fun minigame ^^

Im thinking it would be incredibly hard if not impossible to balance this so that all DOW/DOM/JOBS could do this as fast as the next one. I can also imagine that if Ranger is brought into xiv and gets widescan that job would have a big advantage in this sort of competition being able to scan the landscape and identify the monsters that will reward them the best points.
What comes to mind to try to make it fair would be that the mobs themselves would be tailored to each class/job. I would love to see SE implement something like this though provided possible balancing doesnt effect other PVE content.

Well, what they can possibly do to counter these advantageous abilities is to restrict them. Not sure if Wide-Scan would really be needed in this game due to the mini-map, but if by any chance it is, then it could be restricted.

I was also thinking that mobs can be tailored to which class you enter as. Adding Magic Resistant Mobs wouldn't be really fair, unless they added fair amounts of each type so that there is some strategy involved in which mobs you fight.

These kinds of comments never made sense to me. Someone spends an their lifetime learning a skill that they excel at so the world should change all its rules an balance everything around them so they don't have a leg up over others? That is very communistic.

If someone has a skill no one else has they should be allowed to use it to their fullest to achieve their own goals.

As far as everything else. I love the idea, would love to see it implemented. Though I would make it so you can only get NM Bonus points once. Once you have downed an NM during a hunt from then on it only gives normal points.

I'm thinking for the level 0-30 camps could be the party-up NMs, and for the 40-50 it can be claim-battle NM.

an idea for balancing would be job-specific times. Basically, see out of everyone who entered the instance as a THM, it would class their times with other THMs that did it. Same for ARC, MRD, PUG, etc.

The discussion was going towards balancing so that the competition was fair, i was just saying that it would take alot of balancing to do i wasnt advocating for one or the other. Personally i think there would come a point where trying to balance it so it was totally fair would/could just ruin the experience.

THMs can AOE, so having AOE skills equipped could be balanced by lowering the point gain overall. That doesn't necessarily mean that its a punishment of any kind, it just means that the time it takes for a THM to down 5 mobs should be awarded close to the same amount of points that a Pugilist takes time to down 1-2.

But with what you said, that seems like a great idea. ^^ Seems more fair than pitting classes against each other. You already know who'd win. :P

Excelent idea, but it should be made where eveyone will get something for participating, I like the earned points idea.

What if, instead of trying to balance out all the classes, these competitions gets broken up by class? Then you compete against people with roughly the same abilities and it comes down to skilled game play and maybe luck. It just seems that something like this would be a fairer system, overall.

Of course, there's nothing to stop one of them from being open to all classes.

With this said, there should be two ranking charts. One for certain Classes and another for overall rank.

I love the idea. Player competitiveness is what keeps MMOs lively, whether it's PvP or PvE challenges.

I couldn't deny that, in fact, competition exists in every game in some form or another, but most of the competition that exists in FFXIV right now is just being the highest rank in all classes and having the best equipment. This game needs alternate forms of competition, and more-so needs to involve more skill than just having the best stats.
