You have to buy FFXIV on steam you just can't add your own FFXIV code too it. At this point i don't see them giving us a key for steam for free.
Steam offers this ability for the majority of recent and major PC games bought outside of their store. I'd like to request this to be made available for PC versions of FFXIV.
I already own FFXIV on PC. It's unethical to purchase another copy for the same platform. Mog Station will only recognize one copy on my service account anyway for PC. I have no intention to play two characters at once via two simultaneous paid subscriptions.
Should this question not be asked at Steam?
There's no fee to do just what I mentioned with other games I physically own and then registered on steam. What you posted is simply another way of looking at buying it again.Quote:

I know SE said something like it cost steam when you download FFXIV so i guess that one of the issue.
Do you have a source or link for that info by any chance? If there's any more info it'd be nice to know.
Update: I sort of found a forum on steam for FFXIV.

Found a relevant reddit discussion with a Square Enix employee.

Simply put, as it was not a Steamworks title upon release, cd keys released prior to it's implementation will not work, and it's likely they will not give out free cd keys to those affected, as there's too much risk of those keys being passed on to mates or sold elsewhere online.
How does this Steam purchase work? If I buy it now, and pre-order the PS4 version, will I still be able to redeem my pre-order codes? Do I receive a key from Steam, is it tied to email-address etc. etc. I absolutely don't see through this. How are accounts linked? etc. etc.
please help me!
Steam is only playable on PC, and is in no way related to PS3, PS4 or Sony. It's its own entity.
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think that your account can have both a PC and PS4 service on them, but the characters and so on are separate. Meaning, they may be on the same account and billing, but you can't play a character on PC, then quit and go to your PS4 and play it on there.
You are wrong in that respect mate, as long as the game licenses are linked to one Service Account, all your in-game items and characters of that Service Account will be playable on any added platforms. I have my Windows and PS3 linked to one SE ID, Service Account and I can play on either system - just not both platform simultaneously. When PS4 is released, I will either upgrade the current PS3 to PS4, or get new PS4 license then I can play on any one of the three.
So if I'm understanding you correctly, adding a PC account to my PS3 account will allow me to use my PS3 characters when playing on PC? I wasn't aware this was possible =/
Check your Mogstations, you can add Windows platform to the appropriate Service Account. Your current Service Account will say you have PS3 license, which mean your SEN/PSN ID is linked to your SE ID and Service Account - this however cannot be unlinked. So from that same Service Account, you add a Windows platform by entering the registration code, I believe you have the option to purchase Windows platform via a link in Mogstations, and if you're looking to make your (active) Service Account to be Collector's Edition, you can upgrade too.
Yep I understand all that :) My assumption was that characters were platform specific (ie. My character created on PS3 cannot be used if I play on PC and vice versa).
Nope, you can play any characters on a single service account regardless of platform as long as you have a registered copy of the game for each platform within that service account. If you had two separate service accounts, then you wouldn't be able to play them cross-platform. So just make sure that you link them together properly and you're good to go.
Ah. I wasn't aware of that. I actually had a PC copy and PS3 copy and unfortunately they're on seperate service accounts (registering on PS3 wasn't very clear...). Either way, I've submitted a ticket using their merge ticket system so hopefully that'll get sorted by the time I move house :) Would be nice to play on PC once I've sorted the finances out for a new machine.
Bunny Must Die is a perfect example of how a non-steamworks title can still hand out keys. You'd think that if it costs so much to hand out keys for Square Enix, indie companies wouldn't do it.
Square Enix also mentions how the game must be completely downloaded all over again, I really doubt this since this game uses a launcher to update the main game. More so, I could see Square being able to roll out keys should they decide to do it. Bunny Must Die is NOT the only indie company that isn't steamworks and still handed out steam keys.
Indie Royale and Humble Bundles give away steam keys once any game sold ends up on steam. I see Square Enix shouldn't have as much trouble as they're mentioning, least have an official statement as to why this isn't happening.
