So you'll often hear arguments of Standard vs Legacy controls. I've personally been pro-legacy simply for the fact that it allows you to run backwards and for mage classes it offers zero drawbacks, but for other classes, Legacy controls CAN be inferior for controller users. SE should definitely add a hybrid or allow the player to fine tune their controls.
Here's the deal:
Controller users in Legacy controls simply cannot strafe. This is fine and even superior for Mages due to the ability to back up at full speed. Standard gives you limited view of the battlefield and prevents you from backing up without first rotating your camera 90 degrees.
For classes like DRG and MNK where positioning is key, auto-attacks are given up whenever switching positions with controller or a keyboard user who moves with WASD. For keyboard users this can be easily fixed by right clicking and moving with Q and E, but controller users are stuck with the hit to their damage.
With controller, whenever switching from back to flank or flank to back, you actually walk away from the mob. The game has a very very tiny angle that auto attacks hit the enemy at. This means that as you walk around the enemy you aren't auto attacking. It's a very short time, but it's noticeable. You can turn to the enemy as soon as you get behind, but even doing that auto attacks are visibly slowed down unless you plan your moving in accordance to auto-attacks which would be EXTREMELY difficult on anything that requires concentration and would probably make you mess up more than it helps.
I've tried adding /ft into all my moves macros. It fixes the problem somewhat, but when making macros, your moves no longer queue and without spamming that button so fast my finger feels like it's about to fall off, there's a very very slight delay compared to queuing, which once again lowers your DPS further.
As mentioned in the first reply, lock-on is a fix for this, but it is borderline useless in any endgame content where you require running with a group at moments notice, like Ifrit Extreme.
If you're a Monk, Dragoon, Bard, Paladin, or Warrior, using controller and legacy controls, your damage WILL be gimped and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
An easy fix would be to allow you to auto attack even if the enemy is 90 degrees from where you're facing, or even more. Allow players to attack even if their back is turned to the enemy as long as they're in range. Smart tanks put their weapons away on tank swaps anyways.
Another fix would be to set an option or control scheme similar to legacy, but where the left analog strafes left and right instead of using A and D. That's all we need, would be easy to add, and wouldn't give anybody an unfair advantage, would just even the playing field

The strafing thing for controller users is why they have lock on. Yes yes I know it's hard to dodge with it on, but that's the reason it exists in the first place. So people using that control system can strafe with a controller.

Only difference is that if locking on, if an aoe spawns, you need to unlock, then move or you're flat out dead. At least standard can just swing their cmaera and strafe out. Even without having to unlock, if you're even a split second slow you're dead because everyone else is ahead of you. With having to unlock, you're dead for sure.
Why not just have it so left analog stick strafes left and right and hitting back makes you run backwards once you pass a certain angle? -

All I want out of legacy is the ability to run backwards. I hate what it does to the camera otherwise, so I don't use it. I also don't like how certain key combinations stop you entirely in legacy. It really interferes with mouse over healing.
