Correct me if I'm Wrong . . .

I have played this game since Beta, and FFXI for many years prior. I will admit, XI was my first MMO and have had limited experience with MMOs prior to playing XIV.

While I enjoy exploring this new world and experiencing all that Hydaelyn has to offer, it just seems to be missing something. . .

Then I put my finger on it!

RISK!!

This game offers no Risk! Which completely makes your triumphs feel, well, less triumphant. Wipe on a Boss? NP, try again. Running low on time in Coil? Exit and Re-enter with a replenished Timer. No Penalty on Death(Other than Weakened State). No committing on stat point allocation. Now, they implement that you do not lose Food Effect upon Death!

There has to be risk to go along with the Rewards or it just feels like you are handed everything.

Don't get me started on the bland Loot system. Cookie. Cutter.

The risk of ruining the whole week of Coilz for 7 other people because I stood in the wrong place...

They need to shorten the timer from weekly to bi-weekly or a 72 Hour Cool Down. With Turn 1-2 as your first 72 hour lock out. Then after 3 and 4 complete, another 72 hour and Turn 5 done to wrap things up. This will encourage people to form static groups and keep with them, which in the long term builds strong in game relationships and a core of players that can be built upon.

This will make risk still a factor in the game, while not completely preventing people from doing content if they fail.

A simple addition of ReRaise to the WHM spell list would be amazing.

Agreed, but that is what happens when you cater a game to casuals, they'd rather have a large population base paying them money for a game they somewhat enjoy than a small player base paying them less money for a game only half their current population will LOVE.

Can't blame them. They lost the house on 1.0, now they are recouping their losses.

I can only wish that they implement more advanced loot system as the game progresses, as we are only 4 months into an Awoken Realm Reborn. Hopefully she doesn't go back to sleep again.... :(

You should've played Warrior in 2.0. Tons of risk. You can die any minute if you're just average. And what are you talking about? A realm reborn was released in August yes but A Realm Awoken was released yesterday.

a Class that wasn't tuned properly isn't risk. It is just bad design.

And I'll say again, I am having fun playing ARR, I just wish that they added features that would make it feel less like I am playing a Console game.

I agree, they should cater to nostalgia trips and lose more than half of their, as hardcore l337s would put it, "casual players". I'm sure they'd make a lot more money then.

Why don't you go play Lineage (or Aion to a lesser extent), try to enchant a piece of gear over there, and see if you actually like that "risk to go along with rewards" idea all that much?

I am always risking myself when I attempt to create a 2 star HQ item with 96% of success chance. My experience says that if it can fail, it will fail.

I don't see anywhere in my posts that it should take a year to gear up one job. EXP Loss on death really makes sense, or else there is no penalty for dying. Losing food effect as well, why should I lose protect or shell for that matter? Or any other buff that I cast? I have to believe anyone that leveled Culinary to 50 is not pleased about the new food effect rules.

All I am saying is adding slight risk into this game would make its rewards seem like you actually accomplished something.

There, that is a Risk. DoH has risk. If you NQ an Item, you will end up selling it for less than the Materials used to make said item. You take that risk every time you increase quality on said Craft, because it is worth it!

and when you do end up with an HQ item, you feel accomplished, excited and relieved.

Well, I remember when 2.0 was released, the repair costs were really expensive and there was almost no money income. Each death or each dungeon run were like a bloody stab to your wallet.

If I wanted all this risk business I would still be playing XI. I consider this game less about risk and more of a contest to see wether or not I can find 7 other people who aren't completely stupid to do end game with.

It's Trash Mobs IMO.
FFXI didn't have a single trash mob, and i loved that.
You had to be 10 levels above a normal monster sometimes before it might not easily kill you.

This game has true trash mobs. They pose no threat.

It's a beautiful world. It's a magical world. It is not a dangerous world. It's also not that big of a world... at least it doesn't feel that way...

Having to repair your gear isn't really a risk, as it naturally deteriorates even if you are not attacking things, and your party is.


Aside for needing roughly 125k to obtain your relic and the occasional repairs on gear. Gil has not been an intricate part of this game. Unless, you find your self leveling an Alt Char and want to gear them in Darksteel/Vanya Gear or wanting a FC House. Even then, because neither are exactly necessary.

As someone who played Ragnarok Online as their first MMO(started in 2004), I can definitely see where you're coming from as far as that goes. I actually prefer the way Ragnarok Online, FFXI, and a few more hardcore earlier MMOs did things. Not to say these newer games aren't good, or fun. But those felt much more... satisfying. Today though, we live in an age where a game like that would have a very difficult time surviving. I would expect at LEAST half the player base of any MMO to unsub or leave if a game went to the same level of risk and difficulty that FFXI went to. I never personally played FFXI, but from what I saw and heard of it, it was a LOT harder than this game, MUCH more unforgiving(to the point that you leveled down if you died too much), and overall much more satisfying when someone was done or defeated, etc.

Systems like exp loss on death, grinding mobs for levels, no explanation on where to go(to encourage exploring), BRUTAL leveling systems, stat and skill point allocations which cannot be reverted, and many more, are just systems that won't work anymore. If they were to implement systems like that, it'd have to be on a game where the costs for the company were rather low, the graphics needed to be low, and the overall quality of the game would suffer due to those mechanics being a pain in most peoples' eyes. I can speak for myself, but not others when I say that... I would rather have it like FFXI and Ragnarok. But I blame that on my old schooling gaming experiences. For those who would claim I am looking through rose-tinted glasses, this is false. I still come back to Ragnarok every so often, and never really stopped playing.

Repairing is not an issue. When this game was officially launched, the repairing costs were over the mount of money income. If you died, you will suffer a 2% of durability. You didn't receive money for wiping or clearing dungeons, so if you ran out of money, you were foreced to use other equipment. I don't know if you remember that.

The irony of your statement is serious runners in this game already spent tons of money on food if they didn't make it themselves, then again though, MMOs these days tend to die off fairly fast so clearly older MMOs did something so right to last so long.

I think they could try putting in a Hardcore Server that penalized people for dying, maybe levelled up the trash mobs so that they weren't so trashy, and required everybody always be running at best equipment for their level in order to not only clear content but advance. I think all the people who really like FFXI (@ Launch) would eb attracted to the hardcore servers. We'd also be waving over all of the Eve online players. Who would probably school us because FFXI has nothing on Eve. lol.

Risk is over rated. EVE Online Vet, 8 years. It means you die more and spend more time replacing what you lose. In time you figure out there was never a risk factor. It was going to happen each and every time. It's a matter of when.

I agree. I wish we had more rare items. Something you have to grind for. Nowadays everyone has a relic, there is no driving force of omg i have to have that item/armor/weapon. There is no super rare best in slots, and I know a lot of people don't want them, but that was half the fun of 11 for me. Hunting simurgh, getting my strider boots, hunting Eastern Shadow, getting my ebow. Farming sky mobs, farming sea mobs. Yeah you put a lot of time in but when you got the reward for that time it was an amazing feeling. For me there is none of that in the game right now. Nothing that I am like omg I really want this so I can stand out above every other person who plays the same job as me.

I feel like they do need to add some of these elements into the game. While I do not want to see time sinks such as 24hr spawns like Fafhogg or KB. But maybe more like how they introduced Abyssea popsets, where you would collect items from around the world to spawn said Notorious Monster. I think this could be implemented rather seamlessly.

Even adding uber Rare drop from Coil. Or Re introduce Pink items that can drop from Trash Mobs, that you will have to take to a merchant that can ID them to reveal their true Stats.

This would add some spice to the Loot we have as well as more variety. Progression in loot doesn't always have to be higher iLvl, it can also be functionality of said piece.

It's not about how long it takes, it's about how incredibly annoying the process is. Same goes for all other risk-with-reward scenarios - manastone socketing, crafting Fenris/Miragent pants, etc.

FFXI and XIV have 2 completely different directions. XI was aimed for extreme hardcore players for a lot of its endgame and even the levelling process. XIV is aimed mostly at casual players and catering to hardcores simply because they have to. I like XIV and the direction it's taking because I'm a lot older now than I was when I played XI. I have a full time job and a family to think about so I only get to play an hour or 2 every weekday night, but I will always miss XI and will never forget the great times I had playing.

I would love to be able to go back and play the old XI but it'll never happen. It's a shame but it's the way the worlds gone, and a lot of people are very busy meaning they have less time to play. Also to add to that a lot of players are like me, they started XI and the old MMO's when they were young and fell in love with the genre and are now older with more responsibilities outside of gaming but still love the games they grew up with. Todays market is very unforgiving, and this route is the safest route because it attracts the majority of people.

I did not only +1 your post OP, I want to support you stating that you are absolutely right.

All those that think you are asking for SE to bring back stuff from FFXI have no clue.

There should be a sense of danger in the game, so accomplishments could feel like really like we managed to do something. ARR could make it's own identity of danger, different from XI or 1.0 (thought I think 1.0 was really well tuned in that aspect... and many more), but just... stop making everything such a trivial task.

Danger does not mean having to take long times to accomplish stuff, it's just a way to make players sharper and be on their toes more often.

Bring back the danger Yoshi!

Oh, I forgot to mention in here, why do Mobs lose aggro in this game when they leave there spawn area, that is just dumb.

AK was the closest thing to risk now its insanely easy.

An argument could be made that an acceptable level of risk (ie cost of failure) stimulates people to put more effort into playing better.
