WHM Eye for an Eye poll

How often do other WHMs use Eye for an Eye? is it worth having even though we won't benefit from the improved version of it? I'm debating getting it is why I'm asking. SS+Eye/eye sounds like a good idea to put on tanks, but can its effects be applied to the primal fights and boss monsters or is it just trash mobs it can effect? It would be awesome to use on Titan fight after heart if it would weaken him a little.

All the time. This is part of my oh shit routine. Its instant cast, you cannot go wrong with this. I was like you, I did not have it for the longest time. I only got it for my smn and only then did I realize what I was missing out on. I use it in all situations.

eye for an eye (crossclassed) has the exact same effect as an arcanists' eye for an eye, just at a higher recast time

Eye for an Eye and Virus are your two damage mitigation skills. Certainly an important part of your arsenal. In Coil there are a lot of hard hitting things, it comes to good use there. Eye for an Eye is better when many mobs are hitting the target, since that increases the chance of it going off. If your tank is tanking only one mob, it may take some time before it goes off, and with bad luck it may not go off at all.

Absolutely no reason not to use it. It's off global cool-down, it has a chance to reduce incoming damage for upwards of 35 seconds and it costs 0 mp. If the debuff lands, great, if not you didn't lose anything.

Yeah, this is one of those abilities you just need to have to be on par with other healers. Even consider things like speed runs (an incredibly common thing at 50 as I'm sure you know); when pulling a huge group of mobs, its awesome to use Eye for an Eye and see the debuff popping up on all the mobs.

Honestly, I forget to use it a lot because its on my secondary bar (I really should switch it and Surecast), but when I do its usually when the tank is tanking a group (WP anyone?).

It is very much needed. It is a lifesaver in turn 4 coil.

What else are you gonna slot... Ruin... Physick?

If you plan to play WHM for any length of time then yes, it's worth getting.

It's not necessary (I don't have it because I don't really want to grind ARC to 34), but it certainly doesn't hurt.

I use it on all phases of Coil myself, along with Virus. Especially when we have a Scholar, Summoner, and Black Mage who have these buffs/debuffs it makes it a lot easier. We just rotate them around depending on the fight. Turn 5 it helps out especially with Twintania. Death Sentence is a problem in and of itself, but its also the extra moves she can do right after Death Sentence that can get your tank killed easily. Any mitigation at this point makes it much easier.

All the damn time, it's one of two mitigation cross classes.

The only time I don't use it is in turn 2 since ADS is a jerk and immune.

Great for WP supertank pulls and still useful for just about every other party situation; worth getting if you're at all serious about WHM. I hated getting DRG to 34 for Blood for Blood (BRD), but I still did it and I'm glad I did.

Nice. Good thread....I was grinding my Arcanist simply for this.....but at lv28 was feeling the pain and debating it.....but now, with these comments I will continue!

I use it and Virus every encounter, and normally use it again when it's off CD. I wish the CD was shorter! :D

I don't find it very impressive myself. I use it, but could easily do without it and don't think it was worth the anguish of doing fates on my Arcanist.

Now it may have its uses later in the game, such as in Bahamut's coil as some have mentioned where I assume the damage is so intense it can make a real difference. To that I can't speak.

But thus far in my career on FF14, I would consider it a very weak and boring ability and I regret making it a priority of mine to get.

I think it could use a buff.

It's a free 10% damage reduction for 20s (which nearly always procs) with no MP cost and no GCD usage. There's really zero reason not to use it or have it in the first place. When Twintania is hitting your tank for anything up to 6k damage (with shield oath), you need all the damage mitigation you can get. Be glad you have it already before you do any difficult content.

WHM isn't the only job that should have it either. If BLMs are serious about doing Turn 5 they should that and Virus both set as cross class abilities aswell.

Yeah... just don't wanna grind 14 more ACN levels... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......

I have it . . . it;s on my hot-bar . . . never touched it. i just haven't come across a situation yet where using it would be any benefit at all. In the dungeons I run the tank doesn't even take enough damage to make me even think about it.

EDIT: Disclaimer - my answer and decision WILL rowl up all the Coil addicts so let me say this skill MAY have it's uses there. So I am not bashing the skill. I am just saying I personally have not had a need for it, and I probably won't. For me getting my Relic +1 is endgame. I got it on my SCH and once I get my +1 on my WHM Relic I am going to relax and level up some other classes, coming in as healer when friends need help. I consider myself a good healer, but I do not have the patience to spend hours on end waiting in line to have the privilege of doing a raid. I just want to get this said before people freak out and say "Well you'll never make it through Coil" . . . I'm not doing Coil LOL.

I use it any time there are 3+ mobs on the tank. Short enough recast that you can use it on most fights, and if you know there's a fight coming up you can save it that one fight before.

As an sch, I use it on CD or save it. It helps a lot. I imagine that despite the long CD, I'd use it too if I were playing WHM. There really aren't too many other good alternatives cross class wise for healers. So you should definitely have it cross classed at least. Also, as others have pointed out, it's a free cast and it's instant. I don't understand why anyone would say no to any kind of mitigation. Even if it has a low chance of proccing, mitigation is mitigation. If it allows you to heal less for a short while and whms have mana management issues already so it makes no sense not to use it.

I think it's a good skill, long cooldown for us, and that it's worth getting if you want to. But I don't find it a necessity at all.
If you have the hotkey space, grab it. If not, don't bother I'd say. Unless you're fine with clicking it outside of your keyboard, not that it needs to be used much anyway lol

I have EfaE macro with virus
On 1st press EfaE is cast on <t> or <tt>
on 2nd press Virus is cast on <t> or <tt>

This way i can stagger how and when i cast my damage debuffs.
One press for when tank has group of mobs while saving virus or i can spam button during boss fights and get both the buff and debuff up.

It's a great skill and I use it in rotations during hard encounters and on big groups in farming content. I don't think I would swap it with anything else in my cross-class skills.
However, it's not always useful. Ie. Coil T2, non of the Nodes or ADS trigger Eye for an Eye. Most probably because all their attacks are counted as magical only.

I'm kind of a strict go all in or go home sort of person when it comes to a main class. -IF- WHM is your main, than I feel you should have this. Will it save your raid or party? Probably not, will it help you on big pulls or speed runs, very much yes. Honestly though..do it right or don't do it at all. If WHM isn't a main, than fine. If it's your main..go get the handful of almost semi sorta useful cross class skills we can get you lazy bastich.

This part is undeniable. WHM get 7 potential cross skills, and can slot 5 at level 50. The options are Physick, Ruin, Thunder, Virus, Eye for an Eye, Swiftcast, and Surecast.

• Physick is the same cast, cast speed, and MP cost as Cure, but cannot proc Freecure, so you should never cast it over Cure.
• Ruin is less potency than Stone for the same cast time. It costs less MP than Stone if I'm not mistaken, but it's worse potency per MP and doesn't cause Heavy. It's not even close to Stone 2. The only situation you should cast it is if you need to damage something immediately but don't have enough MP for Stone. At level 50, any situation in which you or your party is counting on one last damage cast from your sub 100 MP WHM is a situation you deserve to fail.
• Thunder is a DoT spell that stacks with Aero and Aero 2. It is worth casting in situations where you are damaging things because it does more potency per cast time than Stone 2.
• Virus noticeably and reliably lowers the damage the tank takes, and you have to pick it up to get WHM anyways, so take it.
• Eye for an Eye semi-reliably lowers the damage the tank takes, but requires a bit more ACN levels to pick up. If you are willing to grind it, there's no reason not to use it.
• Swiftcast is great for reducing the cast times on Raise, Medica 2, and Stoneskin. It is also useful if you need to move while still healing. Takes a bit of work into BLM, but it makes it worlds easier to Raise people. Not mandatory mandatory, but not having it WILL cause you to wipe in situations where you could otherwise recover.
• Surecast isn't very useful except in situations where the entire party takes predictable damage; in these situations it allows you to start casting before the damage comes and then immediately heal it. It's also level 6 THM, so you can pick it up on the way to Swiftcast.

Swiftcast is what I consider the ability worth grinding for. Virus you'll get on the way to WHM, Surecast and Thunder you will pick up on the way to Swiftcast. Eye for an Eye, while useful, isn't strong enough to justify grinding the extra 19 ACN levels unless you are heavily into min/maxing. That said, if you have those levels for whatever reason (whether you ARE a min/maxer, or you like playing Arcanist, or whatever), Ruin and Physick are total garbage, and it is not.

I don't use it at the moment as I've been slack on levelling my ACN, but I will be. It sounds like it'll be crazy useful.

Why, kid? Because I set my own goal and reached it? There's only ONE thing above +1 and that's Coil, and I just have no interest in it. Why should that upset you? LOL. That's just silly.

For a lot of people, currently, Allagan armor is their goal. Mine just happens to be Relic because A) I am not a member of some huge raiding FC with members always on hand to hop in within 5 minutes and B) I actually have a job and a life and a wife, meaning not sitting for 8 to 10 hours a day raiding in some game. At most I put in 2 to 4 hours a day then M'Lady and I do things in real life outside of game. So, sorry I offended you, kiddo.

The irony is that most off my "hardcore elitist" raidgroup that's currently on T5 barely logs in 2-4 hrs a WEEK, yet you got no time because you "only" spend 2-4 hrs a day?

Heck, for FF standards you are the hardcore player here :D

Hey, news flash - this thread is about Eye for an Eye as a skill, and you guys are veering WAY off it, so to get the kiddies BACK on track . . .

I did try the skill last night in WP. It didn't seem to make a difference in the fights, really. So I probably will still not get to use it as much. Like I stated before it seems to be more of a skill for the harder fights like Coil, etc. So I can see why it'd be handy to have there where things actually hit for something.

Wow; I didn't think this thread would get such a huge response!!! Thank you all for your input; truly! I'm gonna halt leveling my THM and hope back on the ACN if this is the case. I haven't had a chance to do Coil yet with my FC (due to schedule conflicts :() but with the new content coming on the 17th I gotta be ready for it. I should have the ability by then I'm guessing.
