The following is a small listing of information or tips that I've received from helpful members of the community. I've found that these have made my day to day FFXIV experience easier. I thought I'd share the basics, and hopefully pay it forward. These are not life changing by any means, but just minor things I find save me some time & effort.

General:
- Spend some time organizing your HUD. Depending on how particular you are, this could take hours, but it's the single best investment of time to improve your experience. See some examples throughout the thread, along with players input below on how to customize virtually everything.
- Always acquire rested experience. Be sure to log out in your inn room or town as much as possible. Inn rooms in major towns must be used to get rested bonus.
- Grand Company Seals. If you're grinding fates for seals to rank up, don't forget about the "Timer" menu. It shows GC turn in items. A full list of turn in items can net you over 4k seals if HQ. Quite often, these items can be bought fairly cheaper off the wards should you not have trades leveled.
- Map. Enlarge your map, and use that transparency option when you can. Makes it easier to navigate zones or find quest markers. You can have it overlay your HUD.
- The majority of lower level items are able to be purchase directly from NPCs. When leveling crafts this will save you significant Gil.
- Build a macro to target the nearest NPC. Allows you to easily target that summoning bell, or quest/FATE NPC when large numbers of players are around. My macro is:

- Zoom out in boss fights. It's much easier to catch onto the dynamics and see the overall battle. This tip literally solved Titan placement on bombs for me.
- Put key information right in your line of sight (example target bar, party list, etc.)
- Build another target macro for the nearest enemy:
- /macroicon "Target Back"
- /tenemy
- Focus Target. This was a game changer for me in Coil Turn 2. By using focus target I can see all debuffs/buffs etc. on a select player. Useful for buffing/debuffing party members or specific fight mechanics.
- Separate your chat log if possible. Use one side for damage and other battle info. Use the other side specifically for mob abilities and things you "need" to know/see.

- If you have multiple jobs, always change out to a DoL class in downtime in order to generate GP. This allows you to have full GP for rare nodes at the proper time. This applies to waiting on parties, Duty Finder, or browsing the market wards.
- If you build out job change macros, always add the "Truth" ability of said job so it pops up when you switch roles.
- Build a macro for all rare node locations and items. Example below.

type <pos> and your current map coordinates will pop in its place, and people can then click those coordinates and it will mark their map with a flag. I'm often surprised how many people don't know this.
If you're in a major city don't expect rested xp unless you log out in your innroom. Despite being able to roll into any minor little dirt hovel in FFXIV and get rested XP, you only get rested xp in the major cities if you log out in the inn.
If you want your rank 10 chocobo barding you have to spec down a single tree and cannot hybridize it. -

The one tip that i use when i play: Pay it Forward
If someone helps you out, try and help someone else when they need it, and as Kanash said, Remember, at one point in your gaming experience, you were once a newbie too
edit:
Save your gil, most decent gear and weapons can be farmed in the dungeons (no matter how tedious it seems) and can usually carry you for 5+ levels
and one i wish i would have followed: Try and level a craft and gathering skill together. both will help you craft gear you may need later, or can sell to make gil, or spirit bond and convert to materia you can sell or use -

to add to customizing your UI, you can use Control-HOME to adjust the size of elements. You can adjust the size of your hotbars and background elements in the UI menu, you can change your menu sizes by having them selected.
Edit1: If you don't know how to use a command type /? /*command* , this is a carry over from 11 and it will spam your chat log with the syntax for what you're doing
example: /? /pcmd, which stands for party command
Edit2: Sometimes it's a good idea to Focus-Target players, other times Monsters (Shift-F to set it, only works for PC) -

- Avoid spamming emotes by entering motion. Example: /poke motion
- To quickly blacklist the last tell (from an RMT), make a simple macro with the line, "/blacklist add <r>"
- You can watch a cooldown from an action by putting this line at the top of your macro code: /macroicon "Input action name here"
- If you play with a controller, you can dismount by hitting the L3 button
- If you play with a controller, you can enable hotbars to switch when you draw your weapon. Turn on "Enable customization" and "Enable customization for when weapon is drawn." in the Character Configuration > Cross Menu, and highlighting one hotbar each to switch to.
- If your hunting monsters for items or in a fate party with multiple monsters dying fast, use /targetenemy and /action "Input ranged action here" <t> for quick targeting the nearest enemy. Use actions that are instant cast such as Tomahawk, Piercing Talon, Aero, etc. -

Ah figures xD My screen feels a bit cluttered as it is anyway even with all the customizing I did, the PS3 does not have a lot of screen real estate to work with. -
12-07-2013, 11:52 AMWyyoteI play on PC and use a controller primarily, but I customized my UI to use the cross hotbar and added in other hotbars as I felt I had some more space. I only utilize a few of the buttons on the additional hotbars so they can fit pretty much anywhere. It allowed me to compress all icons to the bottom 1/3 of the screen, and just leave combat information visible on the majority of the display.Quote:

- Spirit Bonding through crafting is not related to level. It's tied to difficulty. A One star 50 like Rose Gold Nuggets or Twin Thread will get you less sprirt bonding per synthesis than a level 48, 80 Durability Synthesis.
- Random useless information: I just took a set of level 55 gear to 43% spirit bond in the Sylphlands and the loot drop count was at a solid 0. Good if you like to spiritbond with no inventory clutter. Bad if you like to get loot. -

Having a chocobo out will increase your drop rates. I have noticed substantially more drops from solo to solo with chocobo when farming eggs. I think this might have something to do with the chocobo being counted as a party member thus you get 2 rolls for the same item instead of one.

Enemies are bound by the same spellcasting mechanics as players. If you move behind them or otherwise out of their Line of Sight when they are casting a non-AoE spell, their casting will fail. In this way, you can force mobs to fail at spells like Void Thunder III, Fire III, even Water and Fire. This does not apply to spells that are AoE like Blizzard II, Fire II, etc.

LONG bit on hotbars, and some macro commands
1: you can open your item set list and drag it on to your hotbar to change at a mouse click
2: you can open up the marking menu and drag them on to a hotbar (they can also be added to macros with /marking)
3: /echo is a great way to remind yourself of cooldowns
4: If you use a macro it will stop any other macro you have going, be aware of this when using macros with /wait in them
5: you should really have limit-break on your hotbar somewhere, you can find it in the actions tab
6: you can place any system menu items you want on your hotbars from the actions tab
7: you can place chocobo commands on your hotbar, drag them from the actions tab
8: you can place minions and emotes on the hotbars ... they come from the emote and actions menus
9: there are TONS of different target options for spells in macros ... I don't know them all but I think there is an official list somewhere look it up sometime
Code:<t> - target
<tt> - target's target
<ft> - focus target
<1>, <2>, <3>, <4>, <5>, <6>, <7>, <8> ... this will use the party list and target the player in that member slot
<pet> - this will target your pet (Arc/Smn/Sch)
<mo> - mouse-over this will target whoever your mouse is currently hovering over... either in the party list or their character
This one is a bit more complex...
more UI configure things... you can actually make macros to add or remove UI elements. This can be used to remove clutter on your screen by adding/removing things like the mini-map, duty list and hot-bars.
commands are:
/hotbar display <number> <on/off> ... on/off is an optional command when left out it will toggle the bar
/hud <hud element> <on/off> ...
one way I use this is to have 2 hotbars in the same space, with a macro to change which is visible/clickable. My hotbar's 5 and 6... and 7 and 8 are on top of one another, each one has a macro similar to what I have below this. Since I never need to see all the elements at the same time this allows me to save on screen space.Code:<hud element> can be

In my particular case, hotbar 5 is shared (and has all my DoW/DoM job swap macros) and hotbar 6 is shared (and has all my DoH/DoL job swap macros)
I have dragged targeting markers out of the targeting menu and put them on hotbar 7... on hotbar 8 I have some food, emotes and other items I only need rarely and never "in a fight"

Anyway, I'm just showing how you can make the UI a bit smaller to tidy things up a bit and give plenty of screen space (playing on any monitor that's resolution goes to 1920x1080 or higher. This also helps on screens that don't run such a high resolution.) Also, it's possible to overlap your hot-bars and re-map the keys so that you don't have to click on anything you have set. Everything in my hot-bars above is mapped to a key-bind on my keyboard. It's fun to play with if you're bored. I got a few hours of entertainment out of it. :PQuote:

When building a HUD, try to minimize eye and hand movement strain and focus all the relevant information (windows, related inventory items, next level gear, etc) in a particular area without overlap.
If you mainly play with a controller, space is limited. Macro specific global cooldown actions together to utilize space. Do not use /wait, instead spam the macro to activate all said actions, and it will activate the first available action. You will be faster and allows being interrupted (run out of AOE), coming back to the button without waiting for /wait.
"/crosshotbar change #" is another option to utilize time and space. You can create a macro like this and skip the "Press R1+##" step:

I made this for gathering Star items:
At first i found a board only for BTN so i added the MNR one and made it that way, print it and past in somewhere so you don't have to alt+tab to see where is the item and when does it appear ( I only put the items that i felt the most usefull, there was only the botanist one so it may be good to add that in Mor Dhona on the afternoon at the same time it pops for MNR instead of BTN during the morning and you can also add it with a pencil but it can be useful )
