GTX 780 running <20 fps at Revenant's Toll, normal?

I recently upgrade my graphic card from 560 Ti to 780, and expecting a really smooth game.
Well it is, until I got to Revenant's Toll and point my camera to the crystal, the frame rate just drop below 20 fps.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, have the latest driver installed, my other hardware are not top class but still quite decent: CPU i7 930, 12 GB Memory.

The game graphic setting is set to maximum, is this normal or something wrong with my computer?

that's bizarre should run flawlessly, i have i5, 8 gb ram and gtx 680 and i get 50-60 fps

I Use the same setup as you, and i can only recommend to go back to 331.65 - the new drivers decreased my fps in Toll to about 20-30fps.

At Revenant's Toll? With all those people crowding the crystal?

no, when its prime time and everyone's on i get a steady 25-30ish

Areas where there are a lot of players such as cities and Revenant's Toll is very CPU intensive. Doesn't matter how powerful your video card is, the only way to increase your FPS in these areas is a faster CPU or overclock it.

I seen my i7 3930k @ 4.5 Ghz go down to 45 FPS when it's super busy and angle camera just right.

Edit: I went and confirmed my findings. I can get as low as 30 FPS with tons of players in screen, zoomed out. This is using latest beta drivers.

i have 2 670's and an i7 3770k, i still drop in toll to like 30-40 fps or so.

I have a lesser set-up than you and I run on max graphics at 45 - 50 FPS in the same area.

As people have said, it's the area you're in. Your CPU isn't bad, but it is several generations old, and if it's not OC'd it would explain the low fps in a crowded area. With that many people around the CPU starts to become the issue. I get 60 FPS in that area.

The recent NVIDIA card driver increases the FPS. It's the area that you are in as your CPU is struggling to load the characters on the screen.

It's going to be funny to see all the people who drag on PS3 players shocked when the PS4 version hits and has the best performance. They can optimise it to no end.

For a select few. For most the better option will be PS4.

Don't drink Sony's koolaid.

PS4 isn't immune to this, and SE will have to do a lot of optimizations because the PS4 hardware is weaker than OP's specs. The PS4 doesn't even render BF4 at native 1080p. SE set the PC version to draws up to 100 characters on the screen; the PS3 is set to 40 characters and it still struggles in popular fates.

PS4 is a very good option for those who can't afford a $700+ PC.

A select few? It doesn't take much at all to run this dated game on high with more than reasonable fps, highest players on screen and max view distance.

If this were 1.0, that'd be another story all together, complete resource hog.

The funny thing about this is, even with ps4 it's still not going to perform even close to as good as a modern day (gaming)pc that's around the same price of an xbox one.

Not saying PC is master race or anything but currently the difference between the console & PC version is so night and day I feel like they ripped console players off.

Ok that is just odd... I have a gt 430 and an i7 processor and I have a steady 20-25 fps well...pretty much everywhere. Odin, svara, DD(before it was secretly fixed/nerfed), revant's toll, and even the empty mid level zones that no one does fates in. My fps never changes...

Not to mention the CPU portion of the AMD APU in the PS4 gets blown away by a BASIC Intel i5.

I have a 3570k OC'd to 4.4ghz and a GTX 780 and I drop down to anywhere from 35-45fps in Toll depending on how busy it is.

Like most MMOs, FFXIV is CPU-bound when there's tons of people around, so even with SLI Titans you will still experience lower framerates in really crowded areas.

I comment that the PS4 will be the best optimised and get comments from Hanemakikaze, Ispano, and Pseudopsia about power.

Pretty sure it'll be a waste of time discussing this further.

Your processor is pretty sub par at 2.8ghz.

The 780 is a hungry card, it needs to be fed with an army of dump trucks and you have a pickup truck.

In other words, it sounds like your processor is bottlenecking and unable to load your GPU fast enough so your GPU is not running at full load. This would explain why you lag in toll by the crystal, there are a lot of people there and a lot of processing for your CPU to do, it's just not fast enough.

Get an I5-2500k and overclock it to 4.7 ghz and you should see a HUGGGGEEE boost.

Buying a great graphics card isn't always going to net you an increase in performance. Your computer is only as strong as it's weekest link. Your CPU needs to be capable of loading the 780 to max, and it's not. Also your hard drive needs to be fast enough to load textures and stuff into ram for your CPU to load them into the GPU and it might not be either.

An I5-2500k, a 760, and an SSD would have been a better upgrade. The 780 is a better card, but you need the CPU to go with it.

Unfortunately if you want to go i5-2500k your going to need a new MOBO because your CPU is 1st gen.

Mine doesn't drop below 60 FPS in Revenant's Toll Crystal during prime time at maximum settings 1920x1080 even with SweetFX on. Try benchmarking your hardware using Valley or 3DMark.

Problem is you forget that the PS4 uses the same architecture as a PC.

Ps4 will be better than average PC's....

But for someone like me who builds them from scratch and has every component upgraded to it's max... It's not going to touch me. I had better all around specs than the PS4 before the PS4 was even announced.

On board Video for 2nd and 3rd monitor

I run the game in a borderless window and get 60fps stable everywhere I go, even in toll and fates like Odin and Behemoth.
1000 Watt PSU

That is odd cause on my old computer i ran a fail AMD phenom II 1090T with just a 680 and got 45 in all crowded areas, i would say its your CPU so definately upgrade that or like others have suggested OC it, but i personally dont OC anything. Or in order to see a little bit of improvement, and i mean a little bit your not gonna see alot i would recommend rolling back your driver.

Better than Average? Eh, not so sure. The CPU is rather weak, even compared to normal Mid Range AMD CPUs, with Intel the gap is even higher. The GPU portion is pretty much a 7870, which is basically mid range now @ ~$150.

A 780 should not only give you great fps, but scratch your back and bake you cookies too.

So yeah, something else is the issue for sure.

I know what you're getting at, but the thing is, since the PS4 is roughly the same as a low spec gaming machine, they've already done many optimizations for such a system. Just because they know people using a PS4 will always have the same hardware, isn't necessarily going to make it more optimized than the PC version. Not to mention, being the same architecture, x86 in this case, means that many optimizations may just carry over.

There is no guarantee of anything, but by nature of design the PC will never be able to achieve the level of optimisation that a console can. Not to mention you cannot undervalue the benefit of not having to run a full OS like Windows

In the end, still doesn't mean much. There's a limit to what can be pulled out of the hardware on the PS4. Optimization or not. All intents and purposes, it's still a low-mid spec PC.

It's a DX9 game running on a DX11 designed card with a lack of drivers/optimization.

I don't think we'll see any improvements until then. I have an i7 3820 @ 4.2ghz and a GTX680 OC and my performance is garbage, but if I go turn on anything else my performance is through the roof.

I don't understand what your obsession is with optimization. Who cares if FFXIV is better optimized for PS4 when it will still run better on PC?

20fps seems awfully low for a single monitor

I pull 46 on tripple monitor set up. Although my processor is better there shouldnt be that much of a gap

His CPU is a 1st Generation i7 compared to your 4th Generation i7. It's also only 2.8 Ghz, which is on the lower end for the Generation. I run a 4670k @ 4.4Ghz and SLI GTX 780s, I get 60 pretty much everywhere except a few rare places, all at 2560x1600.

final fantasy 14 does not like 1st gen i7 processors

I went and confirmed how low I could get the FPS. It's lower than I thought it would be.

When I zoom out and angle the camera a certain way I got as low as 30 FPS.

System: i7 3930k @ 4.5 Ghz and GTX Titan stock

Interesting, reading through all early replies I thought the reason would be my CPU's 2.8G clock rate (during game it will be OC a little to nearly 3.0G), since those with hight fps all have CPU OCed to like 4.5+.
But if yours is stock clock, which is 3.5G, that's not that much better than mine.
Maybe I'll try to OC a bit more to like 3.2G and see if there is much improvement. Otherwise the later generation of CPU may be something more than just higher clock rate.

You would be mistaken. You forget that your CPU is a 1st generation, Ziar's is 4th Gen. Each Gen can do more per clock than the previous. So that 700Mhz difference is quite a bit more in reality.
