Worried about where the game is going

Please note i'm not saying the game sucks.

It's mostly due to the FC airship feature they announced. I got to thinking of how instanced the world is compared to most modern MMORPGs (The cities are split into two instances, I find that just silly). What can they even do with these airships? The most i thought of was there'd be entirely new zones just for airships, which seems lame to segregate the airships from the rest of the game. In general, I feel there is a lack of world in the game. And while it was amusing at first, the pop culture references just bug me now. Feels out of place in a game that wants to focus on the story.

It's so painfully easy to level up as well that I'm almost to where I don't need to participate in the market as I'll be self-sufficient with all crafts to 50. In 1.0 the sheer grind kept you from leveling all of the crafts to 50 and a devoted crafter was just that.

Alongside from that the only market crafters (mostly) have is other crafters. You don't need to buy gear since quests hand them out like candy, nor do you even need good gear since FATEs are the best way to level and if you do do dungeons you're getting gear from that regardless.

I don't like nor am interested in doing the gear-treadmill. (I'm not asking gear to be handed to me. I just dislike the power-creep it brings and as more dungeons get added new players have to drudge through the then old and abandoned dungeons to play catch up. I just dislike the gear-treadmill as a system of progression).

The way Guild Wars 2 does it is: You can get the basic max level gear relatively easy (think relic or darklight) but the upgrades are minor in terms of stats but still take a long time to get. The real end-game in GW2 is getting awesome looking cosmetics from the new dungeons that come out. I think FFXIV would do well to at least implement some awesome looking things that would take months of grinding to obtain. As opposed to the stupid luminary things that are normal looking tools with a decal on them.

First, You can edit your post to get past the 1000 character cap. Second I think GW2 is an AWFUL game and I hope this game never strides to be like GW2.

However, I do agree with you about the gear tread mill in a sense. At the current pace, it looks like FFXIV will release expansions like World Of Warcraft did. Where each expansion basically makes the previously expansion irrelevant. I don't want FFXIV to go that route. I want expansions to come out without killing previous content.

However I am fine with getting gear throughout the whole process. But they need to add content to previous expansions as they release new expansions to keep things balanced.

E.g. If they release a new expansion that's IL 100, then they need to add hard mode dungeons to launch content that are il 70, and add turns to BCB that are IL 100, etc etc. In essence, each expansion should bring new high level content and add the same high level content to previous expansions to keep them all relevant.

Overall, I'm just not feeling anything special for this game anymore. It feels like every other MMO out there right now but new and shinier. On top of that the game feels like it's being hindered by the consoles, which is probably why the world zones are so instanced, why the inventory is split into so many tabs, why the game feels the need to stop rendering people when there is more than twenty of them, etc.

Not a fan of all the instancing and walling-off either. Any sense of exploration is effectively dead and done for, because you can clearly see where the invisible walls are on your mini map.

On the other hand this is all kind of a first experience thing. As much as I like that thrill when the game is fresh, when I've checked all the areas out in a more open ended kind of game, it's not like it will stay exciting and might as well be instanced and walled-off for all I would care personally.

Comes down to being able to have PS3 players here or not I guess. It's probably better to have the extra people in the long run.

I guess I'm kind of lucky in that I stopped playing 1.0 just before they introduced the Ifrit fight. I've had lots to keep me occupied since 2.0, but I'll probably have all DoH complete by next week and quite possibly all DoL done the following week leaving my 4 classes left to level up. Last night literally everyone in my FC from the 1.0 crowd were bored, had nothing to do, complained a bit, some logged out, some ran WP. A lot of people are losing interest, a lot of people I know from 1.0 only log in to do coil, it's a problem.

Perhaps it's comes from an uneven start, so many people could begin 2.0 with a lot of 50's, and by design the game levels fast so others are not left behind. I wonder if the playerbase has surprised development by exactly how fast they've levelled though? Having the Crystal Tower as a next instance but progression wise placing it between HM Primals and Coil seems .. strange. The majority of people who are finding the game unappealing now are those on Turn 5, so why give them new content that is not level appropriate to them?

You have ESO, Everquest Next and Titan on the horizon and I'll admit right now I'll try out Wildstar (I've applied for Beta), I love this game, but I loathe running constant dungeons; I only do it under duress as it's the only way I can get better gear. Right now I use crafting and gathering as an excuse not to spam WP and AK, soon I'll not have that option and I may find myself saying "Why should I login today?"

I am worried of all the threads with cloned title. no, i'm not worried, yes, i welcome open world content, no i don't want anything nearly close to open world exp pt, hnm, claim wars etc.
For all the rest, give the game time. In whatever game you'll jump later, be ESO, wildstar, whatever new shit comes, you'll not find more content at launch than you have now in ffxiv.

I think that is EA's modus operandi. Hype a game to immense levels using fan expectation based on past success (Sim City, SW: The Old Republic), launch several different versions of the game to immense excitement and mucho monies being spent. People then realise they've been duped but there money is gone - development house owned by EA is forever besmirched and EA laughs all the way to the bank.

in FFXI, I grinded my MNK from lvl 1 to 99 in like 3-4 days, and that's between RL stuff going in the way. Would count that like almost 2 days if I play non stop.
That's less than an hour to lvl 10 soloing, hitting Gusgen Mines till lvl 30 in several hours, Crawler's Nest till lvl 55 several hours, Bosta till lvl 75, and worm party in La Theine abyssea till capped.

And I capped my H2H skilling to 424 in less than a week, just by hitting hard-checked mobs in abyssea too. Granted, I do that because back then MNK is the easiest job to join Adoulin content.

Gearing up on the other hand, is a whole different matters. lol

SWTOR is actually doing pretty well now, and has improved a lot. It's even getting free flight space pvp soon.

I log in once a week , I run WP bout 10 times , then log off . If Im lucky I will get a coil group , but im not in static coil group because I have work commitments, you know a real job :)

Anyways , I find this game is a lot of fun even tho it is only 1 dungeon mostly (WP) . Sometimes I wait a long long time in DF que to get group , unless Im tanking that is .

Really did I just see the RL card pulled? I have a very real, very demanding full-time job *and* a coil static with friends from RL or that I've met in-game or prior games. If you are dedicated there is no reason anyone cannot pull together two consecutive hours to get turns 1-4 done. It can be done in less time but sometimes things go wrong :)

This is what I'm curious to find out. As far as I know ARR has been successful thus far because of it's status in the MMORPG market (i.e. it's the newest, shiniest, latest game for people to play). When the next batch of MMORPGs come out, how many will stay and will content be tailored for those that do, or will it be for those who leave in an attempt to bring them back?

Yeah you can do that now, not when the game came out. And that is when you should compare the leveling. Use your brain.

Key difference from the dev team though. Where BW used buzz words like "soon", SE actually talks to you and tells what's coming when. Compare 2.1 to SWTOR first update.

Yep.
They tell us what's coming and pushes it back 50 times.
2.1 suppose to be out already, we still don't have an exact date...
If it ain't Dec then that's a shame lol. I don't trust the Winter 2013 just yet.

Wait wait wait wait....

Did you really ignore XIV's development for 2 years? I say 2 years based on your join date being 2011 and you don't seem to think SE use buzz words either - Remember Yoshida's "soon after e3" that was...far from being "soon after" and rather "much later than"? Or how everything is always delayed/pushed back and "We can't tell you"/"Won't spoil the surprise"/"Look forward to it"? BW is more direct than SE is in many regards lol. If you compare 2.1 to SWTOR's first update, you'll realize most of 2.1 is content that was pushed back or being reintroduced from 1.0.

Alright, here's one for you:

Back in 1.0, capping a class from fresh to cap takes roughly a month and maybe more. 1st 10 levels were soloing on mobs, then I grind with leves for days till I hit around level 20ish. Then I shouted in Uldah for parties, then we're hitting places like spiders, skellies, lala assassins, ants, and so on. Any mob that max 6 level above our current levels. Sometimes when several people left, we had to lower our mob level target, like 4-5 level ahead of us. After lvl 40ish, we do raptors a lot, and about last few levels till capped, we found good spot on most eastern edge of La Noscea where there's these murderous level 50 rats. And getting to that spot is also a challenge since there's like level 60 or 70 giant toad that can kill us in 2 hits.

And that's when I joined the game after Yoshi took over. Heard it was even worse before with fatigue system.

How's that, genius?

My post earlier are for comparison against current way of grinding levels, not comparing how each games does with it on their early releases.

OP, I think you need to find more things to worry about. I worry about the state of mind of our players when they "worry" about anything in a video game.

It's only natural to care about a hobby, or otherwise anything that you enjoy doing. That applies to gaming as well, imo.

If wizards of the coast announced a new card who let you win the game at first turn, it's a thing to worry because it destroy the game. Here, we are talking about a feature someone want, because if they can't obtain it they can't say the game is succesful, when in reality it's just a feature they like and they want it, having sense in this game or not.

Airships were planned from 1.0 but were never implemented. Unsure of the content involved with them but from what I can recall it will be a group crafting event. They had another thing that was shown waaay back for cooks where they all helped build a giant cake. Regarding the FC airships, there was also random landing/launching towers across 1.0's landscape. They have also eluded to special FATE events to liven up airship travel and sea travel. There is a grand vision for this game. It's coming in stages so we either need to be patient or leave and come back later on.

I see where you are coming from. I too wanted to be useful crafting weapons and armors but now find it useless beyond attaching materia or repairs. This will come as they add in more content. They are far from finished. Don't panic!

They have only scratched the surface of endgame which is where we were told "the true game begins" as it stands today, sure it may seem lacking but we know there is much more coming. Golden Saucer, Hard mode dungeons, Side stories, bonus content, PvP, Housing, and so on. Sure gear might be easy right now but It wont stay that way. I don't see many people whit full Allagan gear yet. The only reason you would have to be concerned with the direction of the game is if you assumed that this is all we will ever get. But the nature of the MMO genre means it is never finished.
