Do we have to have the best gear?

Got into a debate with an FC mate about future story content. The FC mate thinks everyone MUST have the best gear, so raiding is a must in order to progress whatever future story/expansion comes out for the game.

However, given the current MMO market, I disagree. This game seems to cater to the casuals who want some challenge, and the hardcore. And given that all current MMO's on the market don't require people be hardcore raiders to continue the story of their game when an expansion comes out, I'd like a definitive answer.

Do we have to run coil and such, and get the best gear when new story content comes out?

Also, is running the primal HM's story intros required to progress the story?

Well, that's the thing, Coil is the next part of the story. Sure, later on they will nerf it so those who couldn't complete it prior can then complete it. And we don't know if it will be required for new stories that come or not.

That and once people can get the gear from crystal tower it will be easier to do coil.

I'd go ahead and assume for each addition to coil yes you will probably need to have quite a bit of gear to make advancement into it. However unless they add more content for the top percent of players doing coil then it's pretty safe to assume the best is not needed no matter what Mor Dhona goobers think.

Firstly it's Crystal tower > Coil.
Crystal tower was meant to be out on release though was held back.
Gear progression will always be a thing, try running coil in AK gear, it just won't happen.
That's the kind of difficulty you're looking at, gearing up makes things a while lot easier and efficient.

Yeah it's supposed to be iLvl 80 drops. Content is probably going to be aimed at an average iLvl 60+

The iLevel system is already absurd and is just going to get worse. When level cap is raised, instead of getting those level 55+ pieces of gear, we're going to already be way beyond even iLevel 100+

I don't know, just a thought. I realize the iLevel is just a referential number, but it does seem a bit silly.

What's there to nerf actually? The mechanics are pretty much overrated compared to the raids in other MMOs that I've played.

Heck I don't even know the reason why ppl are even failing it.

PS:
I haven't cleared it, coz I have yet to find a group of ppl who actually have a brain to do their job.

PUGs are well.................. PUGs.

That's just what Yoshi has said, that once newer content comes out they will make the older stuff easier so more can experience it.

Story and lore content behind unpuggable raids... I absolutely hate this. It seems like I'll be forced to run Crystal Tower until it stops being fun, so I'll be able to do a dungeon with people I don't like just to see what happened to that person... or wait six months and hope people are still doing it.

Content requiring a level of skill is a good thing, that's what makes games, games - Unless you'd rather XIV was an interactive movie?

Gear helps you advance and make content easier. It is possible to do Coil T1 + T2 in AK and some DL pieces, even T4. However, the catch is an absolute nightmare of constant wipes for hours across multiple days. It will make you want to stab yourself in the eyes right after you bitch slap that dumbass DRG in your party who keeps dying to ADS cannons.

This exact same concept will repeat with future content, Turn 6+. Attempting it with full BiS ilvl90 is not going to be the same as going in with mixed DL/Crystal/Relic AF/Allagan gear.

Short answer, yeah skills are important but so is the gear, after all the game is full of gear check mechanics and it is here to stay.

Actually the ilevels kinda confusing for me. Yes, the higher the level, the better. So what are we going to do with the lower level ones? All are for level 50, heck it will be great if we can convert them into materia, or trade them for mats to npcs.

Hardcore will have access to new story first before casual. however, in the end, casual will following when that content get nerf. it will go like this step by step.

Yoshida used to say that he is going to give new end-game and nerf old end-game every 3 months.

Coil is for eight people. I do have friends, but I'm not part of those eight people.
As for your second statement, no, I'd rather FFXIV be a RPG. This "skill" bs has to be the worst thing that happened to MMORPGs. All it does is separate the players into the ones who can mimick a Youtube video, and the rest who tries but fails.

FF14 ARR is a gear grinder.

Do you need it?
You really don't have anything else to do in the game. It doesn't matter if you are crafting or pounding through dungeons, you are grinding content to get gear.

Uh, what other outcomes are there? You can either do it, or you can't. Pretty sure EVERYTHING in the entire world works that way. If you can't pass your drivers test then you don't get a license. If you can't pass you tests, you won't get a degree, if you fail your interview, you won't get the job.

That being said, when the level cap gets raised and they add the next arch of the story, that too will be completable by people without end-game gear. Yoshi has said that he intends for the "main story" to be completable by everyone. The story the continues through the raid is extra, and a reward for clearing challenging content.

If you're anything like me, I recommend to not grind for gear, or just stop playing as soon as you feel yourself not having fun. Then come back when the next update comes out.

I've learned over the years that as soon I as start to feel that gear grind, it's time to move on until the next update comes out. I'm about at that point right now. You have to ask yourself whether your goal is to get gear, or is gear a means to your goal. My goal is to beat a challenge and experience a good story. Gear just gets in the way of that.

Nah I am having loads of fun. But can someone link me up where Yoshi said these HM story quests are side quests? Because as long as when the next story content comes I am able to complete it without raid gear, I'd be very happy knowing that at least.
