Since you hear more often how bad this skill is followed by a completly wrong explaination here´s the tooltip:
Erects a magicked barrier around a single party member or pet for 30s.
Barrier Effect: 20% chance that when barrier is struck, the striker will deal 10% less damage for 20s.
This does not mean that an average of one in five hits deal 10% less damage.
Every hit got a chance (of 20%) to debuff the enemy upon a sucessful hit. The barrier lasts 30 seconds. The chance the debuff applies is sth between 90 and 97% on average depending on the enemies attackspeed. Multiple enemies each have a chance to be debuffed for each blow they land.
As an enemy is debuffed it will deal 10% less damage. It´s not relevant whom they deal the damage to.
e.g. The tank was buffed with Eye for an Eye. Titan hits the tank several times and finally gets debuffed. Every move he does including his stomps 10% less damage for 20 seconds.
The barrier lasts 30 seconds and the debuff 20 seconds. This means it can happen that a mob can be debuffed 40 seconds from one barrier if you are lucky.
Granted it isn´t that good on tank and spank enemies ist awesome on large addpulls like wp and unavoidable aoe encounters like Titan and Coil.

People think Eye for an Eye is bad? Damage mitigation is never bad, sillies. Especially when it reduces ALL damage. Though I'll admit the activation method is rather roundabout.
I mean, what else are you going to crossclass anyway? Ruin and do awful DPS? Physick and never see a Freecure proc again? :p

Which is 89% for ad = 3. I'm going entirely off of memory, but I suspect most hard hitting enemies actually have an ad closer to 3.5 (which, due to the exponential nature of the function is still 89%).

But I am picking nits. I agree with your premise, and more healers should understand the advantageous nature of Eye for an Eye, even though it sounds like a long shot, it is actually extremely likely that the debuff will work. -

My issue with our kit is that I feel like all our spells are kinda crappy unless we stack the hell out of them. Eye for an Eye, while not a great ability by itself, is GREAT when stacked up with other abilities. The trick is using it 20-30s before the big damage you're trying to prevent in the hopes the enemy(ies) get the debuff. Add Sacred Soil, Virus, and... The bard one... to the mix, and you have INSANE damage reduction.
On Garuda if I time it properly, nobody even gets to half health from reckoning. On Titan, I usually have a Summoner friend with me and we alternate Virus and Eye for Eye basically on cooldown, it can save the tank from a Mountain Buster, and greatly reduce the damage dealt by Tummults, especially if everyone is stacked in Sacred Soil. Since it's on a long-ish cooldown, its great for a WHM to have and the SCH can alternate casts in 8man content. -

Some bosses have abilities that hit like a truck that either greatly benefit from or simply require a cooldown. If you properly rotate abilities such as EfaE, Virus and Sacred Soil, you can greatly decrease the throughput of these attacks. A perfect example in this game is, as stated above, Mountain Buster (aka table flip) or Death Sentence.Quote:

I was guilty of misunderstanding the tooltip myself.
At a quick glance since it was a buff put on the tank I just assumed it lowered the damage done to him by 10% if it proc'd, not that it actually debuffed the enemy that triggered it.
Thankfully I learned my lesson awhile back, but I approve of spreading the word so more people know it's actually a great ability. -

What kind of pot have these people been smoking to think that Eye for an Eye is a bad skill. That skill has saved so many butts in a lot of my runs. To me, it's one of the best things a Scholar (Or any class I suppose) can get for reducing damage.

"Between 90% and 97%" doesn't sound terribly convincing, and since it's quite possible to determine the actually percent based on the attack speed of the monster, I figured I would make the numbers a little more clear.
Also, for the record, since I've been thinking about this some more, the probability of the debuff lasting for the full 40 seconds is actually only 4%, so I definitely wouldn't be counting on that. Still even with just 20 seconds of debuff, it's a beast of a skill. -

It sounds meh at first but it's useful. I usually use it if Virus is on CD or if the tank pulls 3+ monsters.
On my SMN, I use this with a <tt> macro to cast it on the tank.
And I have yet to see the buff go entirely to waste, it almost always applied as far as I could see.
The only thing is the long cooldown you will have without the passive Arcanist trait that shortens it.
But that skills isn't a MUST-HAVE like Swiftcast, it's sure useful though -
