Notorious Monsters. Will we be seeing them again? (outside the F.A.T.E. system)

Any chance we will be seeing these rare spawn monsters in ARR. My friends and I had a lot of fun hunting down NMs during 1.0 or are we just stuck with the same F.A.T.E. monsters (which are boring).

Zerging F.A.T.E. monsters are not fun after a while. Fighting a challenging, rare spawning monster is a great way of solo/group challenges.

What do you guys think?

For those that don't know what Notorious Monsters are. They are monsters that spawned in a group of normal monsters, but have significantly higher stats/skills compared to their counterparts. Monsters could be taken down in a party or solo(in some cases).

I absolutely hope so! I find the current lack of world content in XIV pretty lack luster honestly. In 1.0, being able to go out and find random NMs in the world and get unique gear was such a cool feature. A feature I feel worked very well. Sadly, this game lacks unique gear (which is another thing that kills me) so I'm not sure how they would implement this. This is definitely a feature that should have been around since launch though. I find it odd how many great things from 1.0 they took out of the game for 2.0 for literally no reason. I would be shocked if they didn't slowly add these features back. In specific though, I feel NMs need a complete overhaul in this game. It's sad to see NMs turned into spam fests (for the most part) that offers little to no challenge. The minions some drop are cool, but minions don't hold a candle to gear for me and I'm sure plenty of other people feel this way.

Please Yoshi! Bring NMs back to their former glory!

Yes, and I can see all the bots camping their spawn points for all the goodies they may drop(If they're sellable), or the angry shouting of someone who got to it first. Now, there was a thread that someone made a while ago with the "hunt" system from XII, or maybe it was a combo of that and open world dungeons... Anyway, it'd actually be nice to have a sort open world dungeon area that you go into with a group(or by yourself) to undertake a task, wherein you may encounter a NM. It's not guaranteed, but it may be there and drop you goodies if you prove able to kill it. It'd be "phased" for you in the same manner a Levequest mob would be. No grievances of having to deal with people yanking your shit, no name calling. Unless of course that's what you wanted.

I remember back in classic FFXI when i'd be riding along on my chocobo to some quest of some sort and an odd named monster would catch my eye. I'd do a check on it and then i'd get that great thrilling feeling when I saw it come up as "Impossible to gauge.". I didn't care what it dropped or if it'd 1 shot me. I HAD to get off my chocobo in the middle of nowhere and fight it. The thought that it could actually drop something besides 6 Gil or an earth crystal was great and that it could have attacks I have never seen before was so thrilling. I really miss those moments of random NM encounters. Even those ones that one shot me. XD

There is no claim system in the game, so it wouldn't work out all too well. Even if you wanted to solo it, someone else could come by and think you'd like help and engage, at which point you'd have to both fight it and have an angry discussion about "Go away, I'm soloing".

And this is if they had no loot. If they had loot, you'd just see everyone zerg it because the zergiest person gets the loot.

If everyone promises to not QQ on the forums the moment they get out-claimed, sure, there would be NM's again

But right now, ppl QQ on the forums even when they get out-claimed on REGULAR monsters... so yeah...nope.

Too many ppl who dont enjoy contested content - too many ppl who dont enjoy sharing content either - so unless you have an idea for NMs that doesnt involve them being contested nor shared... good luck!

Didnt play V1 or FFXI so cant comment on those super monsters/NMs (whatever their called) but I like the idea, as someone else mentioned I'd also like to see some kind of Hunt System like XII in here. I got obessed with the hunts on XII :) ramped up a 168hrs on first/only time through and still didnt get everything lol.

Where would these NM's be placed? Theres not room for them, the zones are all too small.

Perhaps for next ex-pack they'll create bigger zones or expand existing one a little - Im not sure whats possible since i dont know how ARR was built. For example the zones-areas seem a lot bigger now then they did during P3, certainly their a lot more detailed and fleshed out that was the first thing that struck me on open beta, so perhaps they is a way to expand existing zones and add new ones down the line.

Or they could have semi-instanced battles like with the single player quests where you examine something and it triggers the battle instance, only playable with a 4-8 player options.

If they did introduce Notorious Monsters, if they treated them like Levequest monsters (only the person who activates it or in this case the first person who engages the target can hit it), it would work out.

they have said and said it, no NM FF14: ARR, it lead to botting, some abuse with the market and other stuff like this.

why not a system of bounty, every day you got 5 bounty given by your GC and all you know is them name and have a picture of them after this, you must found them.
when you reach the right area (like south shroud) you get a small message saying you are close, the monster pop somewhere randomly in the Area and enjoy the search and destroy.

There was no claim system in 1.23 either, yet NMs worked just fine there.
On top of this we used to have something called Faction Leves. Most battlecraft faction leves were basically NM battles. They often came in a series, where you'd have to complete three or four easier ones (but still much more difficult than regular leves) before you could get the proper boss leve. The boss leves were usually very different from all the regular leves, and much more challenging, e.g., having to kill two bosses on opposite sides of the (BIG!) Upper La Noscea zone in just 10 minutes. Coliseum gear, for example, used to drop from these. This is what they should re-introduce, in my opinion.

There is already a claim system in place. Players that tag a monster with a red name have a chance at loot + experience. Players that engage monsters with purple names may only have access to experience from the monster if they participated in enough damage/healing.

In 1.0 and FFXI these monsters would be placed in a placeholders position. For example, they randomly would spawn in the place of an old monster already in the field (after it is killed).

I'm not asking for the same systems, but would be interested to see if similar NM aspects of those games would be back.

I don't remember there being any QQing over people getting out claimed in 1.0...
Oh wait, people weren't D*** then and would just sit a craft or w/e while waiting for whoever to get their drop.

I would assume they would, FFXI and FFXIV 1.0 had them in the game. I feel like they will reintroduce them at some point.

Well, that's just what my experience was in 1.x. Everyone was fairly polite when out farming the NMs. Hell, a few times when I was waiting for someone to get done with Cactuar Jack, a person would kill it three or four times, get no drop, then /tell me 'hey, I'm having some bad luck getting the drop, I'm leaving now, please /tell me when you're done and I'll come back'.

Its funny cause all that sh*t is still happening everywhere. lol... Cheaters and botters will always exist, and companies fail to realize that and in turn take a "SAFETY" route which punishes real players way more than the botters/cheaters who inevitably find a way to circumvent it. (I'm not saying don't punish/combat cheaters, I'm saying look into more ways to combat/detect rather than how many features you can remove from the game to help "Reduce" it)

Personally NM's give big empty zones purpose, and FFXIV Needs that. Since every single zone is just a big empty mess with no reason to go into except for when a quest takes you there. Honestly NMs don't need to be FFXI era where they drop the best items ever period (Like Ground Kings were for a while)... But there needs to be NMs... or at least something that makes the zones you explore more interesting.

I know its nostalgia and I'll admit it, but some of the most fun i had back in FFXI was camping oddball NMs with my friends. Drops didn't matter, it was just fun, dealing with the unique mechanics some NMs got, and overall beating some of them was a real challenge. i know NMs lead to Bots and such but that sh*ts already in the game... I'd rather run by an area and see 2-3 real people and 20 bots camping a random NM than run through a completely empty zone that has no purpose to exist except for filler... like pretty much every zone currently is.

This game world is so beautiful and varied but it could all be replace with a "Waiting Room" sign and serve the exact same purpose... Pointless filler to your next quest. This world needs to be livened up, its not going to make or break the game... I just feel thats really one of the biggest flaws with new MMOs... Big empty worlds.. No reason to bother exploring them.

... Now, It doesn't need to be a Copy>Paste system from FFXI, i know it was frustrating for a lot of people, hell could make the Bounty NMs in Leves have rare drops and such, maybe armor/Weapons of Green/Blue tier appropriate for their level would be awesome.

Considering 90% of our GC seals are in FATE farming, all they need to do is add NM and FATE to the Achievement tree. If you have it unlocked you have access to a new page in GC. Use Seals to get the loot.It should be done that way in any case.

Nope, they'lll all be in the fate system. They're still notorious monsters, and some of them are still rare spawns. the only difference is you don't have to fight over claim.

We already know what notorious monsters are, because the game already has them. Once more are added and technical issues worked out people will be more dispersed and there won't be so severe of a mad rush to participate (frankly it puzzles me how badly people want to get a piece of behemoth and odin since the rewards are mostly vanity- the weapons are not so good)

I wouldn't call behemoth and odin "easy" either- maybe you've never noticed the pile of bodies everywhere at these fights - and once players move on to other content, these NMs are actually going to get harder with fewer people there.

NMs in their current state scale according to the number of people there. So I don't see them getting more difficult, or easier as people move on to new content. Now what you just said brings up a whole other issue though. For the people who are willing to sit there and camp Behemoth and Odin, the rewards are trash! They're all ilvl 50 gear or vanity items. I think that is just silly. I'm not saying they should be the best in the game or anything but at least maybe a step under artifact and allegan gear for the people willing to put the time in to get them!


I believe if the dev team would just simply add a token system to certain NMs just like they did with Behemoth and Odin, the system would work near flawlessly. Participate in the fight, get tokens. Spend tokens, sweet gear. Got your gear?! Sweet! Profit! Or even just add an armor or weapon drop to the bigger boss fates out there now that can drop minions of gold. Give us some RNG! It makes that minion or equipment so much more rewarding when it drops. I know it would be a bit unrealistic to expect this in the near future due to sheer amount of gear that would have to be developed and the systems put in the place to accommodate such a feature, but I believe it would add a whole other layer of depth to the game aside from just spamming quests and dungeons for gear.

I would love to hear some response from the dev team as to if anything remotely similar to this is planned for the future!

Uhm... that's how it currently works for both behemoth and odin. Get silver, get 1 token, get gold, get 5. Trade in tokens for rewards.

I read the post. I wrote it this way because what you said didn't (and still doesn't) make sense- Behemoth and Odin are the only two mobs of their kind at the moment, meaning: Currently, all such encounters work this way.

You have to remember that FFXIV 1.0 was failure and they didn't have too much time to rebuild the entire game. Probably didn't get as funded as it could either. If the support from gamers persist, I'm sure there will come some amazing updates in time.

I believe this as well, but my belief wavers whenever a developer tells us that something is impossible, which really boils down to: "We don't want to spend the time or money doing it."

Keeping the faith is extremely difficult when limits are placed on something you hold dear.

I think they could make Gorgimera and Coincounter level 50 NMs/FATEs. They're the perfect monsters to get the Odin/Behemoth treatment.

Once more "Huge fights" come into the game, it should be more spread out. ( hopefully)

How about instead of having rare ocurring FATEs like Odin and Behemoth being a public fate, why not make it an INSTANCE that only pops as frequently as the Fate, and you have a window to enter the instance with your group. This way you can enjoy the fight with its own mechanics without zerging with no rhyme or reason and having a semblance of an interesting fight.

That would be pretty interesting. Just talk to an NPC to start certain fates like we do now, and just your party challenged the monster if you jump in during the time frame. That would also solve the issues with creatures zoning in and out. Yoshi should really look into this one Yagrush. ha

They could also bring back the idea of HNM to an extent using this idea. If you had a certain "rare" item you could go to a location and enter an instance with your party for a chance to obtain some sweet gear.

It'd be nice if there were NM's sometimes present in dungeons. I think for now having ffxi style NM's would cause major problems especially on high population servers. Gives too much power to the would be griefers/botters/etc.

You know, I wouldn't mind "Marked" enemies appearing rarely from time to time in dungeons kind of like they appear sometimes in Leves.
Maybe it could be that they appear off the beaten path and have a chance to drop a unique item (not rare/ex, just different).

I can see that maybe toning down the atmosphere of "Gotta go gotta go!! Fast fast FAST!! Speed runs only!!!!" that we seem be stuck with as of now...

I would like for there to be NMs in a similar fashion to ffxi (FATE is way different) and it could easily be done in such a way that it would not upset people over claims. All that would have to be done is to have all NMs be phased to your party when you enter a zone. Example, you and your friend enter central thanalan where upon entering the game decides to randomly spawn a couple NMs in the zone that are phased to you (like how some npcs in story quests are phased to you even in open world not in an instance or even levequests) and only you can see that spawn and attack it. There could also be ways to trigger the spawn of specific nms this way.

This game needs NM badly! I hope they decide to add in some NM/open world content soon, this game is lacking it ; ; It would make good content filler..especially now since there isn't much to do.

The NM system of FFXI was honestly complete crap and I'm glad to see it gone from ARR.

And no, its not that I don't like contested content, because I'm pretty fine with having to lot on items after a dungeon, but that I don't like wasting hours camping an NM with a very good chance of not even being able to fight said NM due to being outclaimed. If I log-in to the game, I want to actually play it, not stare at the screen waiting for the NM to pop.

I'm completely fine with pop NMs, but NMs that require camping? Sorry, but I'd rather not see crap mechanics like that in a game ever again.

There really shouldn't be any problem with 1.0's system of NMs then.

Baring a few NMs that required special "conditions" to pop, most of them popped every 5 minutes.

This was far better than FFXI's: An NM might pop... maybe... in about an hour... maybe 7 hours... if you kill all the regular monsters around first to make it lottery pop... yeah good luck buddy.
Lets not even talk about those 24-72 hour, once a week, or maybe once or twice a year (no friggin joke) NMs.
There was literally this one tiger NM in Batallia Downs that popped once a year randomly.

I think avoiding content because of bots is a really bad idea. Why limit content because of a group. SE should work harder on resolving the problem instead of putting a limitation on content they will provide. However, I don't know the reasons behind why NM were removed since 1.0. Would be nice to know what their reasoning behind that was.

NM farming was a lot of fun in 1.0. The game also had a completely different community to it too. I remember farming some of the monsters for hours not just for me, but to help others trying to get the drops. Made a lot of new friends looking for these monsters.

I would myself put them in Dungeons, with low chances to appear, and away from the "Classic path" people take to reach the end.
No claiming problem, but you keep this feeling of rare encounter. It would also be a nice change in the monotony of running these dungeons endlessly...

Or put them outside, with U/P gear so that people do not sell drops...

I just want to find back this thrill to suddenly notice a weird name on my screen.
I would even love to see mobs with long pop conditions dropping vanity gear or a nice title (I loved my "Bye-bye, Taisai"!).

Bringing NM in FFXIV like they were in FFXI is impossible and a bad idea :
- no claim system
- we know how bad botters can be, how frustrating it can be to be always outclaimed by bots/RMTers

BUT

Bringing in NM, and mixing it with FATE (behemot/odin) combat system sounds great.
The NM drop an untradable token to everyone on the enimity list, which can be traded for an untradable item.
Pointless for RMT, fun for you, and you don't have to worry about being the first to claim it.


Just, please, no blue circle on minimap for NM, we want exciting stuff, not stupid grind and farming. NM should be hard to find, difficult fight, reasonable chance to get a token, immediate reward (1 token = 1 item).

TL DR :
NM = rare + no blue circle on minimap + difficult or impossible to solo + no grind (camp ok) + untradable reward (no rmt)
