Same as any MMO.
been rarest since day 1.
all I can say to threads like this... is have you considered rolling a tank? (previously it was healer)
Just because you want to be a DPS / Healer / Tank doesn't mean that everyone else doesn't potentially want to do it to. If you want to go quickly level what the community needs, if you want to do what you want... don't complain when other ppl do the same thing.
"UR a terrible tank" "LERN to hold threat" "Kill urself" (insert derogatory comment of your choice here). These are just a few of the things I've either seen people say to others or read about. I did not change the spelling for effect, but this is what people end up facing. This starts around level 15 when you have to start grouping, it's no wonder many don't continue on the path. As a tank you have to learn how to take a beating from the mobs AND your fellow players sometimes. This may help explain in part why the tank shortage is as bad as it is.
Because people treat other people so badly, and tanks are the prime target. If they struggle, everyone knows instantly. (e.g. a mob goes for someone else and kills)
As Wobi said, the constant attitude of, "ur bad" "l2p" "kill urself" spewed by mostly bad players isnt helping people who wish to delve into tanking. I want to try it sometime later on, I've already got a full Hoplite set and DL wep from WP.
Actually, I did... and it pretty much sucked *mostly* because of summoners keeping out their "tanking" pets instead of DPS pets. You can't keep hate vs pets at the lower levels because you just don't have the skills to keep hate from them without having capped stats from synced down. It doesn't not help you climb up the chain of levels when you don't have the best gear and limited rotation.
Arcanist are *not* group tanks or off tanks. They are DPS and need to stick to their roles. Tanking on arcanist/smn is perfectly fine for solo, not dungeons. (Unless your group is dying to trash mobs)
At lower levels, you should be able to "experiment" a bit and have fun, you could even co-tanking with arcanist and their pet, enjoy the diversity and work together with your group. SMN is quite versatile, Titan ego can actually be used as tank on some dungeons (aka WP) but will need some adjustment in play style from everyone in your party. This is a game, learn how to experiment and work together, you may be surprised on some results when you are thinking out of the box. Endgame tanking is different story lol....
@Rhas, that is a problem with players at lower levels... trying to level it and deciding not to doesn't help the problem that you don't have any early/mid/end game tanks as people give up for various reasons (bad party members often).
My feeling is you can't complain about the lack of a class at your level if you don't have it there and are willing to use it *shrug* it's harsh but really there are a lot of ppl that don't want to heal/tank and there's nothing we can really DO about it until they decide to give it a try.
The lag from the NA servers has kept me out of dungeons for a couple weeks. It's made it really hard to keep aggro or my skills go off at the wrong times. I'm not even going to try Titan HM with it going on. Not sure if this is other tanks reasons for the shortage.
Comments like that have not discouraged me from tanking.
I'm at the point now where I don't have trouble holding threat, even when the party is being stupid and not following targets/aoeing, but prior to that, when they did need to watch their threat meters and follow targets, and would blame me for them pulling threat; I'd simply remind them I waited about 2 seconds in queue, and they could either follow instructions, or wait another 2 hours for a replacement. Even with the 15 min debuff you'll be in a new dungeon before them.
You're part of the reason I've stopped tanking, idiot dps that think they're better then me. The Archers that pull for me because they're impatient to wait for me to get my TP back, the summoners who have it in their head that they don't need another person. The Thaumas that don't know the meaning of the word threat.
The game has flawed tanking mechanics. Granted I did it on a half tank half dps class, the marauder. Which lacks nearly every single mechanic needed to tank known to man, I'm sorry but health alone doesn't cut it.
:T You're talking to a person that mains War, honey. A mrd is most definitely NOT a 'half dps half tank' (we're a full-on tank that can do some decent dps). We have more than enough 'tank skills', I don't see where you got that idea (ever heard of the term 'blood tank'? War isn't Pld, don't play it like one.). Also I was talking about a premade groups I would make during Early Access because I wanted to level ACN along with the story and there were hardly any tanks and the DF wait was (is) atrocious.
EDIT: Don't give up tanking just because of people that don't know how to play on a team, and don't believe that Mrd is 'half dps half tank with no tank skills' that's nonsense. Mrd/War is even the preferred tank until Titan HM and Coil, so I *really* have no idea where you got that 'no tank skills' from.
DOUBLE EDIT: The game doesn't have flawed tanking mechanics either, enmity is a team effort, plain and simple. Did you know there was a threat meter? Did you know you can tab through targets to see how much threat you have/how much threat your team mates have on a specific mob? Trust me, play the class some more, get with some people that you like playing with, tanking in this game is fun and rewarding if you put in the effort.
I've 2 manned guilhests (no tank, no healing because they both dropped out at the start) and 3 manned the starting story dungeons (up to the last boss) without a healer(or acranist/smn) ;) I'm pretty sure I can "experiment" well enough :)
But when I need to gather the mobs (as a low mrd) so that I can keep hate with my limited range AoE (because some people just refuse to follow numbers when I clearly mark them) and the smn won't put his topaz away... Makes it more of a challenge than it needs to be. I ran the low dungeons to help people(and level up), not because I needed to finish them. I finished them all on my arcanist the 1st time to hauke (on that character) But had enough bad experiences just trying to help others out that I won't go back and play tank to mid or high level dungeons.
Don't worry guys and gurls !
I will roll a tank after I've finished my Bard and save all the low lvl dudes from their nightmares !!!
I only tried rolling a tank to help get people through the first story dungeons because they had a severe lack of them but the overall experience left me not wanting to play them at all. I was at least trying to help others in an area I never cared for in the first place but in the end, just had too much BS to continue.
There is a Huge Shortage of Tanks because end game dps treat them like crap. Stop being jerks taking hate on mobs on purpose and hitting the off targets. Better yet let the tank do his job and get hate before you go off on a tangent and pull mobs or hit other mobs that clearly the tank did not flash yet. Could say something about healers and how they treat tanks but tbh it's not as bad as the DPS. Let the tank be a tank and you will find more of them in DF.
All I want is a taunt, just one ability a taunt. I lose threat ALL THE TIME and once I do, there isn't any getting it back.
I swear dps out threat me, and healers do better aoe threat then I do. I don't know if it's just low level threat that has problems, but something isn't right with the games threat mechanics.
I main paladin personally, but I only use it these days to farm myth tomes or help ppl out. I have no incentive to repeat old content as my paladin and I don't really want to lvl warrior right now. If I had a reason to go back and do these instances, I would, and so would others.
(Overpower) (You can have this)
Also, try picking up flash and provoke from Gladiator if you're intent on staying on the path of the Axe. You'll get the hang of it in no time if you put the effort into learning every aspect of the class, as well as learning how much enmity your team mates generate with certain skills.
Also, incase you didn't see my 'double edit', there is a threat meter next to your party member's names on the left side, helps a ton in hate management.
I'm a lvl 50 pld and I can't really upgrade my armor without mythology or coil stuff, not too much incentive to play dungeons like the last poster said. If i was a fresh pld I'd probably avoid DF because there are so many abusive people out there.
I'd seriously would not want to be a fresh lvl 50 trying to gear up right now, so many relic people out there who love to complain :/
I would like to play lower dungeons on my pld but I feel like its showboating or being a jack@$$ wearing fancy armor in copper bell mines.
I am a paladin and frankly I don't enjoy tanking these dungeons there too long for the minimal reward and the huge amount of babysitting it has not the mention the wipes cause people don't think they should look into boss encounters beforehand. Sure you can explain fights but they don't listen and wipe anyway.
Yeah this is why I changed my main class from pugilist to warrior, the queue times were so long (even for the first dungeons)
The good thing is that I actually am enjoying the hell out of warrior!
Plenty of tanks at the lower levels, usually pre-level 20 dungeons. Then they must get fed up with the verbal abuse when they're not playing perfectly, and switch to other classes.
Just saying because I started out on GLD and leveling up to eventually build a PLD later, and I've noticed that tanking doesn't get you insta-queued until you reach some level over 20.
The other reason is because the fewer the tanks, the more they are in demand with their friends and/or FCs, so they tend to gravitate away from random DF groups automatically.
There is no excuse to abuse any player. I am sure dps can do all they can to minimize agro but... Quelling sometimes isn't enuff too long cool down. So u want me to wait to hit and then aoe no don't aoe but u have to kill this fast but stop using flare but kill it fast but slow ur roll. It is like playing with a split personality disorder. It's a two way street with courtesy. How about up front at start of instance you talk about ur objectives and what u can reasonably do and what you reasonably expect. As the tank i will defer to ur wishes since i cannot tank it, but don't ask for miracles either. My static tank can handle me triple flaring and i love it, but i don't expect anyone else to.
Perhaps gear matching is the way to go a tank with gc should not be with a relic +1, and vice versa.
just my opinion
I thought the same thing... until I ran into this one healer. He kept running in front of me (as the tank) and using his instant to pull groups mobs before we were even grouped up. After "pulling*, he then proceeded to run in large circles... away from me. (keep in mind that this was in sastasha, the very first story dungeon) After wiping a few times on the trash mobs to the first boss, I just had to leave and suck up the 15 min DF wait time.
Its funny because every FC I see is FULL of Tanks and healers...
ehmm not enough tanks in endgame?
Oh well, they are everywhere in revenant toll ...lol especially for titan hm on my server
Yeah I suppose war is more position-intensive than pld (though that cone from OP is pretty huge), but overpower is your bread and butter for the most part, especially later on and you have to worry about 'overgeared' dps that like to aoe targets down. Flash is best used for initial pulls (after you've tomahawked a mob, its good to use to 'tag' the rest of a pack) or used when you have someone sleeping targets, as it doesn't wake them.
That cone isn't that huge. It's only got a range of 8y and if you are trying to chase after someone who is running away from you..... yeah....
edit** Take my previous experience in mind where the cnj keeps pulling with an instant and has 3 dungeon mobs after him. Tomohawk works on 1 / 3. How to get the other 2... is... not so fun.
All I can say is try to find a healer buddy to roll with, and don't be afraid to (nicely) ask people to attack the marked mob only, and to run towards you if you lose hate. Seems like your only experience tanking is low level stuff? That's the thing, you have quite a few people that are probably playing in a group for the first/second/third time and don't have the hang of party mechanics yet.
In an ideal situation as a mrd/war, where you pull first, dds attack marks in order etc, you can literally hit overpower four times and go afk until the first mob is dead.
My healer "buddies" are all mostly end game and don't care to sit and run the 1st few story dungeons over and over just to help other people through, though heheh I play with all 4 languages selected and autotranslate just doesn't do some of the simple conversations that are needed.
So true. One of the times I joined Halatali in progress, a tank was missing so I used my tank pet. Another time I joined the same dungeon, a healer was missing so I used my tank pet again since I can't heal as well as a conjurer (last boss battle mainly). Was kinda fun actually and I sort of hope to get into the same situation and help out a couple of poor people (especially DPS players) while I get some exp for it.
