FIX....THE....LAG.

Three small words that should have top priority but somehow you fail to understand them.

Ok so apperently not beeing able to close the game properly is a big deal and gets priority.

And yeah let's not forget beeing able to look at video's at the inn that surely need's the whole tech staffs attention!

I will let you guys in on a secret, a huge percentage of the playerbase cant play the fn game we pay for, its unplayable during primetime for 80% of my guild and this is when we can actually play the game as we work during day like normal people do and primetime is the only time available for us to play in (beside weekends, btw dont even get me started on weekend lag festival)

This is not a isp issue as our isp's work just fine with EVERY OTHER GAME ON THE FRIKKIN PLANET!

This is not a hardware problem on OUR end, because our "rig's" work just fine with EVERY OTHER GAME ON THE PLANET

This is a problem with YOUR server's, and you need to step up to the plate and acknowledge this as a fact and then reassure us that you are actually trying to improve the current situation.

Im not going to deploy useless threath's about cancelling my subscription, but if you have any plans to keep this a subscription based game past 3 months you will need to fix the most essential stuff.

Like making it possible for players to actually log in and play the game.

I play many hours a week on two servers in the NA/EU farm with pretty much no lag, and most of the FC on one of them don't have problems either (I'm not currently in an FC on the other) .. seems your assertion is simply wrong.

Yeah we have 2-3 people playing in our FC that rarely lags either, it doesnt change the fact that the majority of us do, and i seriously dont care if YOU dont lag, thats awesome for YOU however in my guild we got 20 people about to dump this POS game because they cant play it and we play this game to endgame progress not sit and lag together harvesting peacebloom's.

This is not a "my pc is 10 years old and i got 2mb line and i expect to have the same game experience as everyone else!" post btw.

ALL of us have top of the line pc's and none are using less then 80mb fiber, we are part of a larger gaming community that raid in all the major mmo's as well as do competetive gaming in fps's and none of us have experienced anything like this in any game previously so blaming our isp's are sadly like going full retard (and you never go full retard!)

Its all well and good that they send fanboi's to attempt damage control but sadly this ship is sinking no matter how loud you play that violin.

Your personal insults and puerile comments don't take away from the fact that my experience and that of many others demonstrates your assertion that the only reason for the lag is the servers is simply not true. And since you know nothing about me or how and what content I play your reference to WOW is another of your many fails: hint, my 'main' is on Hyperion.

Not to get involved with how this post was written, angrily or otherwise, I will say that the Odin server has suffered from very bad lag for quite a while now. This is my main server and many friends and FC members experience the unplayable lag on a regular basis.

I can however connect to the Rydill JP server or the Gilgamesh NA servers and hardly ever get any lag, with Rydill being the smoothest, but I don't live in Japan, I don't speak Japanese and my friends don't play there. I never know what logic was used to put European and NA servers all in one place in Canada, other than the easy logic of it probably cost a lot less to do!

Kraggykor, i dont care about you at all in any way shape or form, you somehow seem to think that because i (and alot of other people, just check the forum posts on this forum) are having issues with the lag in the game im somehow insulting you as a person.
Your highest character (at least that you have on this account) is level 21, at level 21 you have 0 experience with the game meaning you barely unlocked the duty finder.
When you get to 50 and ALL you can do is run instances (and craft if that takes your fancy) you will sing a different tune (there IS a reason they emergency added more instance servers)
The lag is going to affect everyone, if nothing else when 30% of the playerbase (number taken out of my ass i know) decides to leave and then the game goes f2p in 6 months.
Sure the lag will go away when the servers are no longer congested but so will the revenue.

Word of mouth is EVERYTHING nowadays, and the current word of mouth beeing spread on reddit and gaming forums is "The lag is killing the game".

Hate to say it, but it's just not our fault, SE has done nothing to address the issue, ignoring it outright after accusing ISP's all over the world of throtteling their $660+ million dollar game and have not contacted them....

Its amazing how I, nor any people in my coil group or FC seems to have this crazy lag people speak of.

We have players from all over europe, US, and Austrailla.

No what is amazing is that you come to the technical forum and make a reply saying you don't have any problems, that's truly amazing.

You ppl without the issue need to stop commenting the way you are. It is more than clear due to the amount of posts on this forum about this issue that it is a real issue. Take the time to read before jumping in and attacking the OP because you do not have the same problem. Tons of ppl are suffering this issue. Tons of ppl are not suffering this issue. We already know this.

If you do not have the lag issue. Than please keep your comments to yourself about how its a user end issue. It is not, and if you think it still is I can link at least 50 posts with more than enough info to prove it is a real problem. We know what the issue is. We just want SE to acknowledge it and speak with us customers about it and its potential fix and ETA.

Furon, your original post said about "huge percentage of the playerbase" which I can only assume was based on your other statement of "its unplayable during primetime for 80% of my guild". Your FC according to the lodestone though is 13 people, so that 10/11 people having lag issues.

I can see on the forums that there are a lot of people with lag issues, but percentage wise, it would appear this is actually only a smaller amount of the players who are actually playing the game. Those of us without lag (myself included), aren't creating threads to say we don't have lag (why would we?) and then the times that people (like Someonewithclap above) tries to point out that the lag doesn't affect everyone, they get shouted at.

I think it's a bit higher than 50 people, but as demonstrated at TGS 2013, there's over a million players. Now that was a month ago, but even if only 25% of those actually kept playing, that's still 50/250,000 = 0.0002%

The guy above said he could easily find 50 POST's, and as each one of them range from 3-8 pages i dont think 50 people are having issues with the lag, i mean theres only 2-3 posts about blackscreen when closing the game and that got hotfixxed within 72 hours, and i think alot more then those 20 people posting in that thread had problems closing the game.

Please do at least a minimum of research before posting more crap here, on reddit theres thousand's of individual comments on the LAG in ff14, dating from over a month back to today.

Theres a 140 page long post at the top of this forum that's stickied that is about the lag issues people are having in the game.

So try guesstimating again please, or better yet please don't and just go play your imaginary lag free version of ff14.

Which goes further to demonstrate that SE can only fix errors that are within their control. Your networking routing is not within their control.

I'm haven't been assuming anything, I'm just pointing out the the information we do know, which is that the people with lag problems are in the extreme minority. If there are considerably more people with lag problems, where are they if they're not posting on the official forums?

It's not like these forums are a secret, especially since a lot of the responses SE email/phone support seems to give people is to post their problems on the forums.

Can't stand these people that think because they have not been 90k'd constantly or experience the lag that makes the game unplayable that it doesn't exist.

There is a large portion of the player base who are experiencing difficulties. Most of the people who have reported on this site have spoken with ISPs numerous times (myself included) run countless tests and for these people, all answers point to the problem being on SE's end of things.

Congrats if you have a constant and stable connection to the game, you should go and enjoy it instead of crapping all over the people that are having a real problem with SE. I was actually not having that much difficulty staying connected until the recent 'fix' and now I get booted every couple of minutes making the game unplayable.

I hope the same happens to all of you who say this is not a problem, just so we can point and laugh when you come crying to the forums when you realize there is no where else to get help for this.

I play on Marlboro, listed as one of the lower population worlds, and the lag I was experiencing tonight was terrible. I ran trace routes then pings to every hop and the only problem was 10%+ packet loss at the destination server, which is the game server. All other hops were 0% packet loss. Please do something Square Enix!

That's a pretty good strawman you got there. It's pretty easy to assume that the forums in general are a vast minority of the general player population. Most players just play the game (problems or not), and never go further.

Can you at least agree that the currently most reported issue on the forums right now is lag/network connection related (and by a pretty decent margin)? If not, what do you think is the hot support issue right?

If you can agree it's the hottest issue reported by paying customers, can you agree that it's probably something SE should prioritize in trying to resolve? it also wouldn't hurt to have some type of communications to their customer base about hot issues they are looking at.

Unless of course you really believe that everyone is lying about this problem, or you somehow think it's user error.

Perhaps, but we don't know that for sure. All we (and SE for that matter) can base anything on is actual data. If other people have this problem and aren't complaining in the correct places, it can't be that big of a deal to them.

They can't resolve something they can't fix. Whether people like to hear it or not, SE don't have control the Internet and how your traffic to them is routed. We already know from other threads that certain ISPs do filter traffic (older BT Internet contracts in the UK for example) so even if the ISP says the traffic isn't filtered, that isn't necessarily true (the person actually talking to customers, isn't the person in charge of traffic routing, they're just giving you the information as they've been told which may/may not be up to date).

Even if the traffic isn't being filtered, that doesn't mean it isn't somewhere else on route either as it'll have to pass through multiple networks to get to SE. People keep posting traceroutes to show their path to SE, but all that shows is the path, it's not a good guide to the actual flow of data. The ICMP ping times are a completely different protocol to the TCP/UDP packets that the game uses when playing. ICMP traffic is rarely filtered because by design it's there for diagnostic purposes, TCP/UDP traffic are both filtered all the time.

I will completely agree that SE's support team is pretty sucky, I myself have a ticket open from JULY where I've been trying to update an email address because it won't change it on the website and even though I have access to old and new emails so could easily verify with them, they bounced it around different departments for a while and eventually it got sidelined and nothing has happened with it for a few months now so I've given up in it ever getting resolved. Given the complaints on the forums about support it seems clear that newer tickets are still having the same lack of "support" too.

But in this whole "lag" issue, I can actually understand their silence. They cannot make a statement addressing the lag without also accepting blame for it. Their original response about it was that they understood that some players were having problems and they'd try and resolve it with Internet providers. Well I have no idea if they've done that or not, but that's all they can do, give the ISP as much information as they want, it's still up to the ISP to change it and if the filtering issues are happening somewhere else up the line, it might be out of the ISPs control then anyway (and/or they won't care as it's too much hassle by this point).

The only thing SE could realistically do would be to either throw a lot of money at major Internet backbones around the world to prioritise their traffic (not even sure they'd do that) or create multiple data centres around the world to minimise the network traffic, but ignoring the fact that the cost would be insane compared to the percentage of people with a problem (yep I went back to that again), even if they magically did that, it'd be a complete nightmare for everyone to change worlds and transfer onto local servers.

Nope I do believe it's a problem, I've only ever been trying to point out two things:

1) The percentage of people affected doesn't appear to be as big as people are making out (which if I'm wrong I apologise, but unless there's some actual evidence what am I supposed to think?). If there are considerably more people, then where are they?

Again, I never said this wasn't an actual problem, just that people are overexagerating the size of it.

The solution here seems clear, all the people that apparently have this problem, but haven't posted on the forums, tell them to get on here and post.

Not would you be able to throw it at me with a "told you so", but it'd demonstrate to SE the problem is bigger than it currently looks (although not sure they'd consider the subscription costs of those people worth the cost of local data centres etc as the game has already cost them a fortune with 1.0, but you never know...). They're certainly not going to do anything drastic like that without a lot more people though!

by your math 750,000 quit playing and probably didnt make it to forums so 750,000/250,000 = 300% which means that since the game is pretty good when it is playable they chose not to pay most likely because of the lag and had their setup or their ISP blamed which is complete bullshit most of the time

I can say with certainty this isn't an ISP problem. To make sure, I switched to Guild Wars 2 and played for about 15 minutes. No lag. Came back to this, and I'm getting the same lag I was getting before I switched to GW2 to check. It's definitely server side, because I never had this lag until the Halloween patch.

by the way i never posted about the lag problems i have had because i know they wont do anything about the forums even if i did and have horrible problem with it i will continue playing unless its still going on 3rd month of me being paid subscription which i feel is more than enough time to address the issue

There's pretty bad lag going on and people who are saying there's no lag or that they are not experiencing lag need to stop posting because it doesn't help.

This is in their realm of being able to fix. It's their network protocol running over TCP, and their backend/client code to sync that up. Right now, their system does not handle packet loss and jitter very well. That's the problem. This isn't a big issue in most games over TCP since they don't have twitch style play. Other twitch games run over UDP and can work with pack loss easier.

FFXIV end game is 50% twitch, but their protocol is not designed for that.

On top of that, it's their responsibility to ensure that their protocol and system are not getting throttle by any mid tier circuits, or major backbones.

Otherwise, they will just lose the subscribers that are being affected by this. Maybe they are fine with that.

You're applying an availability heuristic like a boss. Because it does not happen to you or some people in your FC, everyone is obviously over exaggerating the problem. I am not saying a majority. I am not saying a certain percent. I am saying, based on the number of posts and reported incidents on the forum, there is a large body of people experiencing this problem. You do NOT know that thousands of people playing do not experience this. What you know, is that you don't, the people in your FC don't, and you know that there are a handful of people who have posted on these forums saying that they don't have a problem don't. You can not speak for everyone playing, but we can speak for every single person that has posted about this issue, and they out number those who have posted they do not.

EDIT: Also, you keep comparing the number of posts here to the entire 14 player base, which really says nothing at all. Try comparing the number of active posters with problems versus those that don't. Not the number of posters with a problem versus the entire player base. IF the OF forum is an accurate representation of the entire player base (which it probably isn't - most people avoid it because of the sheer amounts of stupid that plague it), you could infer the actual percentage of the player base that are experiencing connectivity/lag issues.

if it helps i will say that my lag is not on the world servers but the duty finder servers only which tells me without a doubt it is not my machine/ISP i have no lag in towns that a ton of people are standing around in

You are not making any sense at all with your posts man, you are blaming people for making exaggerations but every statement you yourself make is based on pure speculation and not facts, if you took the time to read the posts made you would notice that most of the posters here have already been in contact with their isp's , they have done traceroute and in the majority of the cases the problem is located within the datapark congestion that is under the direct control of square , they could fix this problem by opening up or expanding on their current datapark (that is by now proven to be unable to handle the task)

And by using your version of logic, im writing this post for me personally but im also representing the 12 other people in my guild (who have yet to make a single lag post but they have the same lag problems i have or worse) so by your logic that would mean that 13X5000 people have lag issues (hypothetical sample size taken out of my ass, which is exactly the same as every post you made) so my "guesstimate" is that 65000 people are having severe lag issues 65000/250000 (your number not mine) which means 1/4 is having lag issues!!!!!!!

The lag people are experiencing is by far the most posted problem on the technical forum and have been for almost a month /check
I have talked to my isp provider and confirmed that the problem is not on their end, the congestion is taking place in montreal which means that its Squares problem to fix not mine /check
In my FC everyone is affected by primetime lag and on my server (Odin/eu) the guilds we do coil with are saying the exact same thing, aka they cant play because a majority of their players are lagging too much. /check

If this was a problem only affecting a small minority it would not be the hot topic on reddit (and have been for the last month), it would most certainly not generate more posts then any other subject on the english forums (not just technical but all all sub forums)

Its ok beeing a fanboi and standing up for the game you like, but pretty much everyone making a post here love the game, otherwise they would do what my guild is planning to do if nothing is done, which is to unsub and go play something else without making any posts of any kind, the people actually posting hoping for a resolution to this problem is the people that actually want to stay and play the damn game.

Funnily enough I wasn't having these problems during the beta, even during the stress tests (when I could actually log-on, that is).

But for the past month or so I've been experiencing increasingly bothersome lag spikes. Today it's reached a level so bad that it's nigh impossible to play without getting killed during an encounter. SE, please look into this and make it known to the community that you're seeking some form of resolution. Something as simple as 'we're looking into it' can go a long way toward consumer satisfaction, however minute that may be.

Because people without an issue wouldn't post that they don't have an issue. Why would they? And you're right, I don't know there aren't thousands of people affected, but neither do you. Your information is based on your own experience and the hundreds of people (not thousands) posting on the forums. Just because it's a hot topic in the technical support area at the moment, doesn't automatically mean a high proportion of the players are affected, it just means there are relatively few other problems.

im writing this post for me personally but im also representing the 12 other people in my guild (who have yet to make a single lag post but they have the same lag problems i have or worse)

Okay... the facts are that there are potentially more people that those posting on the forums who are affected by a lag issue, but because they haven't posted to tell people, they aren't getting counted (either by me or more importantly SE).

Yep, this. I have no heuristics or statistics, or really much of anything, and probably too much superstition. Back in the early days of beta my servers (older Diabolos and Ultros) had pings in the 100-200 millisecond range for many zones. I haven't been back to check those, but when Famfrit came online, I never saw pings (just using the in game numbers) of less than 400 mS. And even the newest server Zalera isn't much better.

My theory is that when they increased all the capacities, some amount of this lag becomes inevitable and is server side. It shouldn't take very long to process a transaction with the machines they have, but if poor QoS is not routing transactions well then all bets are off on how long it takes and how the client side sync is. There was a single weekend that they had to do a very extended emergency maintenance because there were 90K errors that exposed the fact there were more users than expected, and I believe when they extended the capacities, the game may have some design flaws that are causing quality of service to be poor. So I expect some network optimizations causing the lag.

But I'm only guessing based on my experience. The user base is so much larger now, there may be no way to fix it.

When is peak time? Because I get the random delays and stuff out of well...random. No one else in my family is using net, I test my ping on laptop and I dunno how to see ping via PS3 and test other games, no lag.
But since I work from afternoon, to evening, not sure if I wanna try and come home and play everyday when I am tired.
Cannot fully enjoy the game is we all got be up before the brink of dawn to actually play.

well around this time right now i experience minimal lag half second or less which i can deal with but in a few hours its so bad the game is unplayable

Before 4:00pm my time is unplayable in the world. After 4pm I can play in the world but no DF. After Midnight I can finally do DF stuff. This doesnt really fit in with how I wanted to play the game.. So I just don't play anymore. I have an active sub, but I still have no desire to be frustrated constantly while trying to play a game.

It's pretty much unplayable for me right now. Everything just freezes for 1-2 seconds and then warps around. This is constant.
