There's nothing impressive about Hardcore.

The difference between Hardcore and Causal has nothing to do with skill. I know some people who play this game every hour of every day, and they're not that brilliant, whereas others who play a couple of hours a night are outstanding.

For a start, there is nothing really difficult about this game. It's all remembering patterns and timing skills. The most difficult part is finding a group you can rely on, and once you have that and you know the content a win is inevitable. So telling people you can speed run x content just shows you've learnt the patterns and committed them to memory, not that you're some kind of superior gamer. Casual gamers can do his too, they just won't get there as quickly or do it as often.

There is nothing wrong with being hardcore, I'm not suggesting that, merely pointing out that just because you're focused on the game more it doesn't make you better by default.

Actually, you're just arguing semantics and we're talking about the exact same thing. Time/effort... A hardcore player is someone who focuses on the game intently. That doesn't mean the effort their putting in is greater in the sense that they're actually better at the game, it just means that playing the game gets more of their attention than a causal player.

Hardcore does not = skill.

Edit: Jynx's comment highlights the problem precisely. The negative connotation that's been applied to casual, and this positive that's been applied to hardcore is the exact issue. It's simply elitism, and a deluded sense of superiority.

I think the fact it's getting more likes tells us all we need to know about the attitudes present on these forums.

It's funny you call his view of hardcore skewed when your definiton of "casual" is just that. the irony

If you do something often enough it becomes second nature. That can seem like 'skill' but it's really only reflex. Similarly if you're doing something new, and you're hyped up and paying attention because it's exciting and fun, you can either foul it up spectacularly or, alternatively, perform really brilliantly. It just happens. It's great when you do something first (like a boss fight) and it works great, but it's rarer than going to do the same boss after umpteen turns and doing the right thing at the right time. Just the way games work out. Same with other things in life, ever seen a RL skilled weaver in action? Now that's skill. Or is it repetition?

I always thought hardcore gamers are the ones who want to squeeze all possible content out of a game, get all achievements, all trophies, etc... and do it as hard as possible. And casual gamers don't care about all that, they play as long as it's fun, but usually don't go for unnecessary challenges. And true, it has nothing to do with how much time you are able to play.

Now that would define a true hardcore player! One who wanted to maximise the difficulty in achieving a win. What would be more difficult then, to be 1 in a party of 8 who was the knowledgeable geared player, and running deliberately with 7 who were low-geared and didn't know the score? A win with those odds, now that would be hardcore. Wouldn't it?

I would say a hardcore gamer is someone who enjoys playing, they don't use guides unless they have to. When they lose they get back up and keep trying until they win.
It isn't imo a style of play but attitude. It has nothing to do with gear or skill. It's refusing to give up even though you know you will probably lose.

It's taking the more difficult route even though there might be an easier option.
It's the guy who crosses the marathon finish line 4 hours later than everyone else, because he didn't give up.

The definition to me, is the amount of time put in to the game.

I consider someone a hardcore player if they're playing 8+ hours a day, everyday. That used to be me in the past. 16+ minimum hours gaming, that's any game. When there was a good mmo, I break for a shower and food and a few hours of sleep and that was it.

Now, I have a wife, a job, and a kid and I can't put as much time as I'd like to anymore. So, I think I'm a casual player. My skill is still there, I can still get any achievement in any game. Just takes me a little longer.

I'm a casual player, I want better gear, It's taken me about 40 days to get to cap. But honestly don't care if it take 10 hours or 10 weeks.

How would you describe a player (in the old xi world) who spent most of their time exploring or crafting? Or, to take another case, the WoW player who got to 90 without fighting a single mob, getting exp by doing non-combat experience quests? Are they less hardcore than someone who grinds a single or small group of mobs all the time they can, as soon as the boss pops? If the boss pops once a minute and is called an Ornery Karakul, we call them farmers.

I always associated hardcore players as those who play competitively (your typical progression focused people), while the rest may still strive for the same stuff but at their own pace. Play time doesn't dictate play style although inevitably the hardcore players will likely also be the ones who play the most.

Whosoever considers the definition of one of the two types of players (Hardcore or Casual) to have derogatory connotations, is most often to be the derogatory opposite.

While I agree with your definition of Hardcore, I take issue with your definition of casual. The actual definition of casual does not have anything negative associated with it. A casual player is just someone who doesn't have as much time, who doesn't care about getting the best possible gear/progression/etc as soon as he possibly can and just plays the game to have fun and do what he feels like.

Your definition of casual falls better under the definition of Lazy and Bad. :P

I wouldn't classify you as casual then, I have yet to do any endgame content myself and I'd still consider myself a Hardcore gamer.

The definition really differs for everyone but in general "Casual" has a negative connotation to it in the gaming universe. There really is no "Set" deffinition of hardcore or casual gamers. Hell I'm sure some people would call me casual for not having done any endgame. It's no skin off my back, but my point is that the OP is just flat out calling "Hardcore" gamers entitled trolls, it's just as bad as my initial spat at what "Casual" refers to.

Sure I can't say my view isn't skewed but I really don't consider people who try to play the game "Casual" I only consider the people who think you can't level fast enough and want the game to be easier as casual gamers as they have limited interest and investment in the game in general. I consider Casual gamers the ones who play the game for a few months and move on to the next flavor. Whatever floats your boat but I wouldn't be wrong in saying that in general to "Gamers"

the word "Casual" has massive negative connotations to it. Much as other buzzwords like "Broadinging the audience" or "Accessabillity" often lead to negative reaction due to the times these have been said in the gaming community.

They actually get enjoyment from spending time and effort on a game. Soaking up the lore, style, gameplay, and themes. They play it that way because they enjoy it.

Your impression of them means nothing.
