I've decided to wear some gear I wish to spiritbond while crafting. In order to maximize my material to spiritbond ratio, what actions increase spiritbond with your gear? Does any action? Is it only touch/synthesis? Do you only get spiritbond for completion?

1) You only get spiritbond for completion.
2) You get the same amount of spiritbond for quick-synthing as you do from crafting normally (except, of course, that quick synth will fail a little).
3) The amount of spiritbond you get is based off of the difference between the item level of whatever you're spiritbonding, and the synth level (note that 1-star and 2-star synths are considered to be above lv50 synths, I think). If your synth is more than 10 levels below the iLvl of a piece of equipment, then that piece will gain no spiritbond at all. Also, I'm told that synths above the level of the equipment do not give any more spiritbond than synths equal to the level of the equipment.
4) The amount of spiritbond a piece of equipment gets is increased substantially if the equipment is HQ.
5) The amount of spiritbond a piece of equipment gets is increased substantially if the equipment is melded onto (moreso if it has multiple melds, I'm told). I do not know if the grade of materia affects the rate increase, but I know the type doesn't, so feel free to waste those useless elemental materia.
6) Spiritbond+ gear doesn't seem to add much to spiritbonding (estimates place each +1 spiritbond to a +1% increase), so you're better off spiritbonding other pieces of gear instead of wearing non-convertible spiritbond equipment.
7) Aetheryte Rings don't grant crafting materia (so far all I've seen them give is base-stat materia and elemental materia).
8) iLvl55 items can grant tier-4 materia, but most of the time you'll get tier-3s.
Bonus: 300 quick synths of a lv50 recipe gets you approximately 75% spiritbond for a non-melded piece of HQ iLvl55 gear. The shard cost is very exorbitant to spiritbond iLvl55 gear.

1) Just to be clear, I am referring to the gear that you're wearing, not the result of the synth. I do not know if the result of the synth (HQ vs NQ) has any bearing on the amount of spiritbond you earn.
2) The bonus is specific to that single piece of gear only. If you are wearing all NQ stuff, and only an HQ belt, the HQ belt will not increase the spiritbond rate of anything but your belt. -

Everything Raldo said + also this may sound dumb... but killing mobs with your crafter/gatherer class raises your spirit bond rate... I was playing around with my buddy chocobo and noticed this (Was killing Hypogryph in Mor Dhona) so if someone can test a full PT with mixed crafters/gatherers (to spirit bond) and fighters through pile of mobs say at beastmen fort might be good/fast? w I haven't tested the full party method yet so can't say it will work.
Just to add... calling out your Chocobo and fighting on your crafter/gatherer doesn't give XP to the Chocobo :(
And noticed some fates you can't join in, ones where mobs tries to attack NPC worked, boss type ones I got a error message even in low level FATE areas.
Yeah, that too, but I'm talking about actually killing mobs with your gatherer/crafter class while wearing the body piece and everything, not only the accessories. I know it sound dumb but just putting it out there for those that want a different way lol.Quote:

I do this. I'll throw on some crafting accessories in CM. I also got about 30-50% spiritbond in one group during Dark Devices, but that only happens every hour and is the only thing that players regularly team up with to kills tons of mobs.Quote:

Just so nobody comes in here with delusions of grandeur about how much money they can make spiritbonding their iLv55 crafting gear, here's a taste of what I got out of some of gear after more than 300 Mega-Ether synths.

The materials themselves were dirt cheap, but at 12 shards per synth, that's well over 3600 shards. It's questionable whether or not I even turned a profit thanks to the abysmally-low chance at tier-4 materia.
Note: It would've been more profitable if I'd thrown some materia on the gear so it would spiritbond faster, but I did not know about that at the time. -

Grade of materia does not matter, btw. In my testing, III and I had the exact same effect. More materia is also definitely better. I tested 2 lvl 47 electrum rings (both hq, 1 with 1 materia, 1 with 3) over 80 lvl 42 synths. The 1 materia ring got to 35% while the 3 materia ring got to 46%. At this rate, the single melded ring would have been at less than 80% when the triple melded ring completed, which is fairly significant. (178 crafts vs 228 crafts).
Also, all crafts are not equal in terms of rate of spiritbinding. There is reduced efficiency the lower the craft level is compared to the item level. In the above example, less synths would have been necessary for completion had the tests been on lvl 47+ crafts. It's not wrong according to my testing. I'd love to see any raw data you have to compare my results to, though. Maybe we can figure out why the rate is different.
I used electrum rings of crafting for this test, as well. Both created specifically to test materia affects based off your assertion that it was different. Slotted one with fire I and one with fire iii. Synthed electrum until they completed. They completed within 1 synth of each other, which is why I said there's no effect. I'll test again this evening to reverify.
Tested again, no change. Both I and III bonded at identical rates. -
