Are we really supposed to grind fates to 50 on sub-classes? No more quests? Alts?

I made the mistake of doing all the quests below level 30 on my main, my Arcanist. I don't even remember doing them all but I apparently did, all the main city area quests, Uldah, Limsa, Gridania, etc. Upon getting 31 summoner I felt like making a bard so I did, had Gridania quests till 20, but after that I realized I would have to grind my entire way without quests after, running around across the map on my mount doing boring fates.

Why does the game have such few quests? Are we expected to mindlessly grind on fates on every sub-class we want to play to get to 50? Is this how the game is gonna be? Because it's really gonna bore me.

I just legit want to know. Should I make a new character? Not abandon my current character, but like, have certain classes/jobs on 1 char, and certain classes/jobs on the other, just to not keep the game so grindy. I know you can have everything on 1 char and there isn't very much reason to make an alternate but other than that I don't really see another reason why people look down on making more than 1 character.

Bit of a whiny thread but I'd like some positive insight here. I am enjoying the game so far, but this is the only part of the game that I'm going to complain about honestly. Discuss?

tldr Add repeatable quests for sub-classes.
Make guildhests worth doing more than once.

not sure if this is related, but I noticed a while back when I was running around in central thanalas on my lowbie low marauder (lvl 10 or something) that I had ZERO quests available in central. I checked, and I hadn't done any.

from starting in ul'dah on a different char I knew that there are actually quite a few quests in that area for that lvl (I think they are around lvl 5-6 or something, down at the station for example)

what I think the problem with quite a few quests is is that they are main quest related. you can only pick them up after you've done a certain part of the main quest. a part you cannot do if you started in a different city. so some of these quests, supposedly helping you to level up another class, are impossible to ever do because you can't unlock them. -.-

edit: now to your actual question ;)

the devs have stated in the past that 'to experience the game to the fullest' you should first level up one class to 50 and then do the next. obviously the majority of players don't do that, especially since you have to have a subsclass on 15 to unlock your jobs.
there is an exp-boost that is depending on how far your current class is away from your main class, levelwise. there's also food. every different kind of food gives you + 3% exp. always run around with food. it makes only a little difference, but it makes difference!

then of course there's chaining. I've managed a chain up to 5 the other day when I was going all-out-grinding with a friend, but that was only a first try and we were a few level apart. I think word on the streets is that chains go up to 19 but I'm fairly sure it goes much much higher.
it may seem like it right now, with everyone always shouting for fate parties, but maybe you should go to your server's forums and ask if people would be interested in good old chain-grinding (basically what people did in FFXI)
granted you won't get any seals like that, but you get mats instead that you can use for crafting or selling on the market, if you care about that ;)
is this repetative? it absolutely is! I wouldn't do it for hours, either. had my fair share in XI, but it's a nice alternative to have to fate grinding.

then of course there's leves. mix it up with normal ones and grand company leves.

dungeons relatively close to your level also give a great amount of exp. you may even ask on your server first for people to join you, so you can build a steady group or just to generally get some friendslist action going.

everything is better when you're doing it with friends, anyway! even fate-hunting can be super hilarious when you do it with people you like. you can chat about random sillyness instead of being static, spamming your dots/aoes in hopes of getting a tick on the monster... ;)

there's also the hunting log and guildhests, of course!

remember, all these things may just seem like a 'little extra' on their own, but combined they are definitely noticable, and when you mix it all up it will keep you entertained for longer :)


there's plenty of ways to get exp. and since you're not 50 yet, 'learn from your mistakes' and don't do every single quest! what I do is that I cancel quests if I realise i'm not within 2 level range of it. granted that meant that I ran out of quests before, but I personally would rather grind a little on each class than doing it all entirely on one class... especially since I level by personal priority. the last class I play will obviously also be the class I have least interest in actually playing.

Quests are so WoW and they are almost just at boring if not more annoying .... And even dungeon grinding eughhhhh; you do enough of that at 50 now. if they brought exp parties back it would be a nice refreshing change and fix this crappy community. Then we would know who the cramp players are before they reach 40

Considering FATEs are not getting done as 'intended' (unless they intended them to get zerged down), yeah it gets very boring. They are essentially dynamic quests, however quests generally don't get tuned for half a dozen people, and get hit by 5 times that. The level rate would slow down, but I'm sure it would take a little while longer to get bored actually hitting rotations instead of spam tabbing your instant cast skills. That said, the current process is great if you want to level sub classes quickly for cross class skills.

I was actually going to level a separate character for MRD/GLD but in the end decided against it. Having the monthly fee convert from Euro to AUD really doesn't persuade me to pay the extra for more than 1 character slot per server either.

I tried leveling another character, but found redoing the quests to be even more boring than fates. Think I'll go along with 1-50 in 20 hours of fates while watching some movies.

I don't know about your server, but there are actually people who do EXP chain parties on Leviathan. Usually it's at low levels, though.

Hunting Log to 10 mixed with levequests. Add in guildhests after 10. Add dungeons after 15. Mix it up and have fun until daily quests are added in. Why do you think you need to spam fates all the time? You don't.

I can see exp parties making a comeback.

The lack of exp from main story quests definitely hurts, though. I decided to go down the mnk > arc > brd route, and if it wasn't for fates, it would have taken me much longer to level up my my class.

Just curious, as a DPS what do you do during those 90 minute queues people have being reporting, assuming your sole focus is levelling your battle class(es)? Leves are limited, and once exhausted if you avoid FATEs leaves you with simple mob grinding. You definitely are not wrong that there is plenty to do, but some roles are definitely more gated to other content than others.

I'm taking a second and 3rd character up with just the story, dungeons, guildhests and not doing any of the sidequests. One of those characters is an archer. I have pugged that archer up to the ifrit fight and done the first 3 dungeon anywhere from 2 to 4 times each (in the last 4 days). Sure there are sometimes 20 or so minutes when I don't have a party but I check all languages, not just english and the option to join a dungeon already in progress. First time through Tam Tara I got in just as they were fighting the last boss. Cha-ching! I've been through Tam Tara 4 times now though so it's not like I couldn't get it mapped out :)

I am also *not* rushing to 50 on any of my characters. I have no problems doing other things while waiting for a dungeon/guildhest spot. Like the hunting log, farming materials, occasional fates if they pop up on me, working the other combat jobs my archer wants to level, etc.
